4th Sunday of Lent-March 11, 2018

From the Pastor’s Column / Noticias del Párroco

As the Eucharist unites us as one Body in Christ, may we faithfully live and share the Gospel.

We are halfway through the season of Lent. How has your Lent been so far? If you’re like me, this is the time when those resolutions I made at the beginning of Lent get a lot harder to stick to. Maybe you’re in the same situation. Maybe you’ve faltered a bit on your Lenten resolutions. That’s okay. Don’t give up. We all fall down. We all have those times where we come up short of our goals and desires. But with God’s grace, we can start again. More important than asking, “Have I perfectly kept my reso-lutions” is asking, “Have my resolutions allowed me to grow closer to God?” If we keep our Lenten resolutions perfectly but do not grow closer to God, then they don’t really count for anything. There are three weeks of Lent remaining. How can you use these remaining three weeks to grow closer to God?

No te rindas.

The three disciplines of Lent are prayer, fasting, and almsgiv-ing. One of the great ways to do almsgiving is the Rice Bowls from Catholic Relief Services. The money raised by the Rice Bowls benefits those in need around the world. We still have extra Rice Bowls in the vestibule for anyone who would like one.

St. Charles Borromeo is participating in the 40 Days for Life Campaign on Thurs-day, March 15th, from 7am - 7pm, at the St. Louis Planned Parenthood facili-ty. Please join us as we stand in peace-ful witness for life. Our Father and Lord of Life has entrusted to us the noble mis-sion of safeguarding and protecting hu-man life. During this holy season of Lent, may we be strengthened to work tirelessly to pro-mote a true Culture of Life, a culture that recognizes true dignity and sanctity of every person, especially the most vulnerable, the most helpless among us, the un-born children. Can you commit an hour or two on the sidewalk this year? Please prayerfully consider this op-portunity to join other Christians in witnessing and praying for the weakest among us! Need more info, contact Sandy Boschert at 636 947-3421 or Lisa Moeller at 314 731-5301. Or you can sign up after Mass on Sun-day March 4 or Sunday March 11.

What does it mean to be a faithful steward? How is stewardship intimately lined with the Eucha-rist as a response of our faith in God for His many blessings? Fr. John Lanzrath shows us how to develop an attitude of gratitude to grow in grace, incorporate a spirituality of stewardship in eve-ry aspect of daily life, and overcome the selfishness than keeps us from recognizing God’s gifts.

Having received the necessary faculties from His Grace, Archbishop Kenrick, I have on March 27, 1892, solemnly baptized three bells for the steeple of the church of St. Charles Borromeo. The names of the bells being Charles, the largest bell Joseph, the second bell and Mary, the smallest bell. Rev. Charles Charroppin, S.J. —Special Thanks to Marlene Schneider and Theresa Schuppan for this fascinating record find. According to Fr. Dotson, it is a typical custom to bless or bap-tize the bells of a Catholic church.

Meal A Month for March 2018 The Next Meal a Month grocery collection will be March 24/25, 2018. This food is distributed to needy families from the FISH food pantry. Items needed this month are canned chicken, canned tomatoes, canned chili, Mac –n-Cheese, Fruit and dishwashing soap. During the month of March only, we are also col-lecting 15 oz. cans of Spaghetti 0s for the Mini-Vinnies. We have some very special people at our parish, who not only contribute the food monthly, but those who collect it, and take it to the FISH distribution site. Thank you all for being God’s hands in this particular ministry. Meal a Month had a particularly generous amount of food donated to it for the month of February. Normally only one person is needed to deliver the food, but for February, there was a need for two delivery persons. Thank you SCB for all your love and generosity as you fulfill this Corporal Act of Mercy by feeding the hungry.

Last year we collected over 185,000 diapers for those in need and we’d like to exceed that total this year. We would ask that you please consider placing the purchasing of infant, toddler or adult incontinence products on your shopping list and bring them to the Narthex. Are you interested in sponsoring a teen to attend the Steuben-ville Conference this year? Steubenville is a weekend confer-ence held at Missouri State University in July for those current-ly in 8th grade to current high school seniors. We have 41 teens and 6 chaperones attending this summer! This year we are heading there a day early and returning a day late as we will be stopping at a church on the way there and the way back. This will help us prepare our minds and hearts for the weekend and take time to reflect and recharge before return-ing to our daily lives. The cost is $280 per teen, which includes transportation, meals, lodging, a t-shirt and programming. You are welcome to provide a full or partial sponsorship for a teen. All sponsorships remain anonymous. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Kristin Wil-liams at [email protected].

The youth group will be selling Krispy Kreme

donuts after all Masses on March 18th in the narthex!

We will be selling them by the dozen, half dozen and

individually. We will also have coffee, milk and juice to-

go cups available for sale, too. Make sure to stop by and

support the youth group as we go to the Steubenville

Conference this summer!

March 11, 2018-Gospel Background

Your Loving Sacrifices Make All The Difference

March 11, 2018 4th Sunday in Lent

In today’s Gospel, God demonstrates great love for us by sending his Son so that we may believe in him. We

demonstrate our great love for God by do-ing good works: reaching out to other, act-ing in justice and charity. Through your almsgiving you are perform-

ing a good work; far greater than you think. Know that your nickel, dime, quarter or dollar is multiplied by the coins placed by others in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box.

WE THANK EACH OF YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need-by the generosity you display when you share your treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

The four th Sunday of Lent is sometimes cal led Laetare Sunday. Laetare i s a Lat in word that means “rejoice.” Traditionally, Sundays are named after the first word of the liturgy’s opening antiphon. On this Sunday, the anti-phon is taken from the book of the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 66:10-11). Even as we observe our Lenten sacrifices, we rejoice in antic-ipation of the joy that will be ours at Easter.

Today’s Gospel reading is taken from John’s Gospel. It consists of two parts. The first part is the final sentence of Jesus’ reply to Nicodemus, the Pharisee who approached Jesus at night. Nicode-mus acknowledged Jesus as someone who had come from God and seemed to want to be a follower of Jesus. Jesus greeted Nico-demus with the observation that one must be born from above to see the Kingdom of God. The dialogue between Jesus and Nico-demus that followed was about the meaning of this phrase. Nico-demus misunderstood Jesus at every point, but there was no ani-mosity in the questions he posed to Jesus.

In the part of the conversation with Nicodemus in today’s Gospel, Jesus referred to an incident reported in the Old Testament. When the Israelites grumbled against the Lord during their sojourn in the desert, God sent venomous serpents to punish them for their com-plaints. The Israelites repented and asked Moses to pray for them. The Lord heard Moses’ prayer and instructed him to make a bronze serpent and mount it on a pole. All who had been bitten by a serpent and then looked upon the bronze serpent were cured. By recalling this story, Jesus alludes to the salvation that would be accomplished through his death and Resurrection.

The second part of today’s Gospel is a theological reflection on Jesus’ words to Nicodemus. The Gospel of John is known for this kind of reflection offered within the narrative. The words of the Evangelist are in continuity with the words of the prologue to John’s Gospel. In these reflections, John elaborates on a number of themes that are found in his Gospel: light and darkness, belief and unbelief, good and evil, salvation and condemnation.

In John’s reflection, we find an observation about human sinful-ness. Jesus is the light that has come into the world, but people preferred the darkness. We wish to keep our sins hidden, even from God. Jesus has come into the world to reveal our sins so that they may be forgiven. This is the Good News; it is the reason for our rejoicing in this season of Lent and throughout our lives.
