Letters to the editor www.sceneonline.co.nzLettersI would like to acknowledge just what awonderful wee town we live in. Last Tues-day I was leaving a doctor’s appointment atthe Matamata Medical Centre and a sweetyoung girl came up to me and gave me abeautiful bunch of daffodils. She thoughtthat I might like them, which of course I did! I was so touched by her thoughtful-ness and kindness, I thanked her but didn’t
even ask her, her name! So, to that sweetyoung girl who truly did make my day, thank you so much for my beautiful daf-fodils. Lianne McNeill.
Unbeaten weekend as Swiftsenter season’s twilight
Comag Matamata Swifts and Chal-lenge Matamata Swifts Ladies com-pleted comfortable wins in theirfinal home games of the season, while Wa-haroa Transport ended their 2020 cam-paign with a come from behind draw onthe road. The Swifts’ struggled to score in the re-verse fixture against Te Awamutu, butmade up for that profligacy as they regis-tered three times in the opening 23 min-utes to put this game to bed early. A latepenalty from the visitors meant the gamefinished 3-1. Captain, Bjorn Vossen, set theSwifts on their way after slipping home afifth minute penalty, before Matt Pottsscrambled home from a corner ten min-utes later to double the lead. Young play-maker, Anton Ganas, was rewarded for hisbright, influential opening with Mata-mata’s third. He also placed a target on hisback as, with little official protection, thevisitors spent the rest of his time on thefield kicking him rather than the ball.Ganas wasn’t the only Swift on the end of agood kicking as the game went on. Thatwas the tone for the remainder of whatbarely resembled a football match. The vis-itors finished well from the penalty spot, late on, after being gifted their chance toscore following a scratchy hand ball call. The other Saturday game saw Waharoa
Transport Swifts reserves recover from atwo goal half time deficit to draw 2-2 atWaihi in their final match of the season.Ronan Costello and Ethan Davis netted forthe reserves as they couldn’t quite com-plete the perfect comeback. On Sunday, Challenge Matamata Swiftseased to a 3-0 win over Northern United toset up a title showdown against WaikatoUnicol next weekend. Shania Stewart back-heeled Matamata’s opening goal then Ker-rie Cox nodded home to give the Swifts atwo goal half-time lead. Northern have tra-ditionally been difficult opponents forMatamata, but when they put throughtheir own net in the second half a tidy vic-tory margin was assured. All focus nowturns Sunday’s final game of the season, which will be played in Hamilton. Mata-mata and Unicol have been neck and neckall season, drawing both their previous en-counters but sitting miles ahead of anyoneelse in Waikato Division 1. Unicol have asignificantly better goal difference so theSwifts will need to win to bring home thetitle. It’s all to play for.The Good Merchant Players of the Daywere Blair Griffiths and Matt Potts (ComagMatamata Swifts), Shania Stewart (Chal-lenge Matamata Swifts Ladies) and RobCox (Waharoa Transport Swifts Reserves).Dwayne Barlow.

With members from as far as Lich-field to Waharoa, Piarere YoungFarmers is a group of youngadults between the ages of 18 and 30 whoget together each week at the OkoroireHotel to share company, ideas, social andfundraising events. For some, it’s simplyan opportunity to just get off the farm for acouple of hours and talk to two leggedfriends rather than four!“For many of us, as much as we love ourjob and lifestyle, it can be pretty isolating”says president, Mitch van Loon. “YoungFarmers is a great way to meet likemindedpeople that are in the same boat and un-derstand the challenges of a career thatdoesn’t always fit the 9am to 5pm profilewith all our weekends off. In the quietermonths it’s great to have a bunch of matesyou can go go-carting or paintballing with, have a summer night out at the lake with afew boats or even get together and pick up
hay or maize for fundraising. We like tocontribute back into our communities atleast a couple of times each year with thismoney and recently, with almost equalvotes, two local organisations received oursupport.”Representing Pohlen Foundation, man-ager Gilly Alexander was delighted withthe donation and thanked the young farm-ers at their recent meeting. “You’ve justbought us a wheelchair” she laughed! “Asthe fundraising arm of Pohlen Hospital, wecouldn’t contribute to crucial capital pur-chases without the support of our commu-nity and are very grateful for your efforts. And, as a farmer myself, I appreciate thattime off the farm is precious and the factthat you have used your own time to ben-efit such a worthy community asset, is in-credibly generous.”The second person to benefit was SunnyAmopiu on behalf of Shining Light on the
Dark South Waikato. “In our organisationwe are not professionals” said Sunny. “Weare simply a group of volunteers passion-ate about raising awareness of mentalhealth, depression and suicide. It’s crucialwe kill the stigma associated with anyoneexperiencing these thoughts and feelings, and get the message out there that it is okto talk, ok to ask for help and ok not to beok. We are committed to helping peoplefind their way through the dark and get thesupport they need - whether that’s thosesuffering, or the families and friends af-fected. Your contribution will be of im-mense benefit to providing furthersupport, and we are very appreciative.”If you would like information about joining Piarere (Okoroire) Young Farmers, feel free to flick the team an email at [email protected]. You’ll bemade very welcome!Caron Stewart.

opportunity of a lifetime. Both qualified AutomotiveTechnicians, Graham for the past 43 years and Hayden12, the duo had worked at the local Nicholsons Deal-ership that didn’t reopen after the lockdown. With 55 years’ experience be-tween the two, both can boast some pretty bigachievements in the industry. For Hayden he achievedin the top 10 finalists at the Holden Tech Guild, notonce but twice! And Graham’s depth of knowledge onall makes and models means there is not much thepair can’t fix and get back on the road. “In many areas of life the single mostimportant factor predicting suc-cess is mental toughness or ‘re-silience’ – the ability to bounce back aftershocks and setbacks and not dwell in un-productive emotions.”This quote is from Kevin Biggar, thekeynote speaker of the 2020 BusinessNight Out, an evening which celebratesand showcases the district’s businesscommunity. The evening will be held onThursday, 29 October at the Matamata-Piako Civic and Memorial Centre. You canexpect the competitive People’s Choicefor Customer Service and Contribution toCommunity but due to the current cli-mate, the big business awards have beenremoved.“While I commend those who have pre-viously put their business and staffthrough the judging process, this year, things are different,” said Mayor Ash Tan-ner. “On reflection of the current climate,Councillors decided it would be wrong toput local businesses under the judgingmicroscope when some are still trying tosee light at the end of the tunnel or fight-
ing to keep their staff employed. It’s stillgoing to be a great night – and as a busi-ness community, there’s still so much tocelebrate and positives to focus on, not tomention a fantastic guest speaker whowill have a message everyone will takesomething from.” Known as the ‘big challenge guy’, guestspeaker Kevin Biggar’s message willfocus on challenge and resilience. “Afterthis past few months, challenge is a termwe can all relate to” says Mayor Ash. “It’sbeen a tough year no doubt – there’s beenuphill battles and real struggles but ourbusiness community have done theirbest.” You can get behind the BusinessAwards by nominating a local businessfor the Customer Services Award. Thenomination form is available in Council inFocus, (see page 9) or you can nominateonline at mpdc.nz/business-awards.“Have a think about the person whogave you an amazing smile, went theextra mile – or was an outstanding essen-tial service provider during lockdown. This is the time to say thank you and give
back to our local businesses – so makesure to nominate now or vote when thetime comes in late September,” saidMayor Ash.A panel of judges will select five nomi-nated businesses from each of the threetowns which will go out to public vote.“It’s always highly contended – and wehave no doubt this year it will be evenmore so,” he said.

Sometimes we can’t see the point in givingthanks for things we don’t like or don’tcare about. But St Paul, in his letter to theThessalonians says, “In everything give thanks.”In whatever circumstances we are in, we canchoose to either moan and groan or we canworship, and when we worship our hearts aregrateful. We give thanks to God. He is the giverof every good gift. Our lives are surroundedwith good gifts. We should cultivate a habit ofquietly thanking God for the gifts that we no-tice, day by day. In difficult circumstances grat-itude gives hope. So when you can’t seeanything to be pleased about, search quickly forsomething you are grateful for. And as youthank him you will realise that God is the giverof good gifts, and you will know that he is withyou still.
In everything give thanks

Moving on with fond memoriesAlthough it was daunting being em-ployed by Sue Whiting; “that ladywho always seemed to be stridingaround the CBD with a clipboard doingimportant stuff”, a weekend job helpingout as an information officer at Mata-mata i-SITE in 2005 introduced localwoman, Memorie Brooky, to what soonbecame a passion for tourism, public re-lations and supporting successful busi-ness relationships throughout thecommunity. The interesting thing wasthat this career path was not somethingshe had ever considered, nor imagined, while taking on employment to fund hermusic studies!“Opportunities seemed to arise thatjust felt right at the time” says Memorie.“And, ironically, nothing was ever reallyplanned! It just happened that, followingmy experience at Matamata, my next po-sition was at Hamilton i-SITE – initiallypart time while I was studying, thenlater, full time. This offered the chance toexplore everything from providing cus-tomer service, tourism and travel adviceand even helping with regional eventplanning - including for example, organ-ising accommodation for the WorldRowing competitions and coordinatingthe V8 Supercars. I loved that every daywas different and always brought aboutexciting, new challenges.”Ironically, Memorie’s decision to moveback to Matamata couldn’t have beenbetter timing with her now good friendSue, looking to introduce a team man-ager’s position at i-SITE. “This was in theearly stages of the proposed upgrade toour iconic Gatehouse” says Memorie. “Iremember at the time, after seeing the
come a trainer at the New ZealandSchool of Tourism, it wasn’t long beforeleaving home at 5am and not gettinghome until sometimes 10pm, took its tolland, much to the delight of Sue, wasenough to lure her favourite local back! “The one thing Sue is probably best re-membered for within her i-SITE role”says Memorie, “was her ability to takeher team on whatever journey she sether mind to - and always for the better-ment of the whole community. She con-tinually encouraged us to step up, andsupported us all the way. This meantthat when she took the opportunity toput herself forward as a Matamata WardCouncillor and resign her position asmanager, it was with full faith she knewwe were more than capable of makingthat transition. When I think about itnow, if anyone had said 15 years ago thatI would be the new Sue and take care ofi-SITE, the Public Relations Associationand Matamata Business Association –and then meld the latter positions intothe more streamlined direction of aChamber of Commerce, I think I wouldhave passed out! It has been such anhonour to continue Sue’s work and, al-though I am about to embark on a newchallenge with NT Wealleans, I have ab-solutely no doubt the current Board willcontinue very successfully, especiallywith the recent appointment of my suc-cessor, Steve Edwards. Although thereare too many people to name individu-ally, I would like to take this opportunityto thank every single person who hascontributed to a fantastic career withMatamata i-SITE.”Caron Stewart.
plans, thinking it would never happen –clearly I underestimated the commitment, dedication and drive of our little white hairedgo-getter however! Later that year and in thepresence of our then Prime Minister, JohnKey, a massive street party celebrated itscompletion and official opening. Sharing inthat milestone will always be a highlight ofmy ‘back and forth’ stints at Matamata i-SITE.”With a short break again in 2015/16 to be-

If there’s one thing the team at Matamata Citizens Advice Bureau can’t stress enough, it’s that they arefully operational, open to all members of the commu-nity and have all required health and safety proceduresin place following the global outbreak of Covid-19 earlythis year.Well actually, that’s three things but, says Chair ChrisChambers, “it’s crucial our visitors know that, regardlessof their queries or requirements, the Matamata CAB of-fice at Railside by the Green is an organisation committedto providing impartial, free and confidential assistancein a completely safe and supported environment.”Now more than ever, the Matamata CAB team appreci-ate that there are a large number of community membersthat, for various reasons, may feel a little anxious aboutvisiting public spaces. “We can assure these people how-ever” says Chris, “that we have taken all steps to min-imise any risk with electronic and/or manual tracing, provision of hand sanitiser, face masks if required, andthe use of social distancing. We have identified that some, particularly the elderly or immune compromised, may befurther disadvantaged with feelings of isolation if theyare what we call, digitally excluded, so have addressedall areas we believe to be of potential concern.”Having been an integral part of the community for over40 years, Matamata CAB is run entirely by volunteers –all of whom are fully trained and completely competentwith nationally networked resources, information andcontact databases. They are not there to make decisions
for you – rather, to empower you with relevant and up-to-date answers regarding everything from housing oremployment, how to access legal or social services, coun-selling, budgeting or finance and various family issues.“If we don’t know the answer on the spot, we will do ev-erything we can to find out” says Chris. “We strive to offeroptions that provide choices, or lead to a solution, whether that’s personal, family or community issues. Wealso have a variety of forms from legal aid to dissolutionof marriage, pamphlets and fact sheets on most topics, and information on clubs or groups for all ages available”he says. The Matamata Citizens Advice Bureau is for the community, run by the community, to make the entirecommunity an easier place in which to live. It’s only through the generosity of Ballance,NT Wealleans, Daltons and J Swap Con-tractors that Matamata Lions are able to fa-cilitate a fundraiser that benefits local groupsor organisations to the tune of several thou-sand dollars every year heading into spring. The Lions house-to-house distribution ofgarden fertiliser has been an anticipatedevent longer than anyone can seem to re-member and this Saturday, September 19, itsset to raise valuable funds for Matamata Col-lege Sports Club, Matamata Guides and Mata-mata Playcentre. Each of the organisationswill provide trailers and runners that willvisit all residential homes in the communityoffering a range of garden fertiliser productsfor purchase.“We are extremely fortunate to have thesupport of our annual sponsors” says Lionspresident, Andy Andreson, “and in particu-lar, appreciate the huge amount of work ourprojects convenor David Wearne and hiscommittee have put into organising thedrive. Our recipients stand to raise signifi-
cant funds towards a range of fantastic pro-jects or initiatives and obviously, will reallyappreciate the support of the community.”For Matamata Playcentre, the Covid-19lockdown in March severely compromisedplans to host a community open day cele-brating stage one of a major development attheir Farmers Road facility. With a large, pre-viously unused paddock adjacent to the mainbuilding and playground under develop-ment, the committee have been excitedabout creating a natural play space to in-crease creativity, learn problem solving tech-niques and enhance cognitive abilities forpreschool children in the community. Theextra funds potentially available through theLions Fertiliser Drive are likely to help thenext stage become a reality. Also adversely affected by the continuedeffects of Covid-19, Matamata Guides areputting the disappointment of postponedand cancelled events behind them and work-ing towards ensuring local girls have the op-portunity of attending more outdoor
experiences such as camping, and the 2022national Jamboree. “Obviously there aremany groups, clubs and organisations in thesame boat” says leader, Linda Sinclair,“which is why we are particularly grateful toMatamata Lions for this opportunity. Thereis a lot of uncertainly out there and if thiskind of fundraising can alleviate some of thecost to our families, then we are pleased andproud to contribute our time and efforts ontheir behalf.”From 9am to 12noon, around 40 teamswill be driving the streets of Matamata sell-ing garden fertiliser, dolomite, lime, bloodand bone, and Daltons vege compost door-to-door. Prices range from just $6 to $18 andwith no eftpos facilities available, it would beappreciated if anyone interested in purchas-ing the products, could have cash available. For anyone who may be missed on the day,you are welcome to contact Carol on 07 8886086 or 027 350 6696, or Kay on 027 2807385 for to organise purchase and delivery.Caron Stewart.

They are BruceMilne and Andrew Smellie. I apologise pro-fusely! Secondly I credited the wrong per-son for the photo wall that greeted playersand public inside the clubrooms. This hon-
our should have gone to Michelle Gillieswho did an amazing job of collecting ma-terial from the senior players and formingthe wall. I was truly fascinated with thegathered notes, photos and memories. Ev-eryone owes you big time Michelle! Vayacon Dios, Dick Larkin.WALTON MEN’S GOLFThere were 59 players, including ninevisitors from as far afield as Titirangi andMaungakiekie, who turned up for a greatday for golf, with greens recovering wellafter coring. It would be fair to say it’s not oftenGraeme (Podge) Waterson is lost forwords but, if he is, it’s often covered upwith a hearty grin or funny banter! LastWednesday evening however, the well-known local could do nothing but his bestnot to trip as his jaw hit the floor!“I did think it was a bit odd my familywere all in attendance at our Lions meet-ing” laughs Podge, “and I thought maybesomething good was going to happen – Ihad absolutely no clue though, that I wasabout to be acknowledged with an awardgenerally saved for the really good fulla’s!”Having joined Matamata Lions in 1975after his rugby days came to an end,Graeme was in the flooring game at thattime and, with a young wife and family, found it a great way to contribute to thecommunity, make some good friends andtake on board some of the valuable experi-ence from mentors such as the late DonLocke, Max Peterson, Alan Pepper, TonyTrower and Neil Algar. “More than ma-chines, everything was about musclepower in those days” says Graeme, “andwhether it was chopping wood for the el-derly, or major projects like building thecommunity baths or the IHC facility on Sta-tion Road, we were all very enthusiasticand hands on. Lions – and all our local ser-vice groups actually, have been instru-mental in many worthwhile projectsaround the town and continue today, to dowhat they can to make a difference.”Not one to count the years in his life asmuch as the life in his years, Podge hasn’treally taken any notice of how manydecades he’s been a member of MatamataLions even though four and a half have re-cently ticked over. He’s simply continued
to attend meetings, roll up his sleeves, takehis turn and, wherever possible, get in andhelp get things done. He continues to seeimmense value in the contribution Lionsmakes to all number of individuals, com-munity groups and organisations and, withthe motto, ‘We serve’ – likes to think hedoes! During the dinner meeting held at Mata-mata Club, it was with a great deal of plea-sure President Andy Andreson surprisedPodge with the presentation of a LloydMorgan Life Honour – the highest accoladeavailable within Lions. “I was floored, ab-solutely speechless” says Graeme. “It actu-ally came as quite a surprise that I’vecelebrated 45 years with Lions and to beacknowledged in this way, was really
something. I was quite overwhelmed.”In accepting his award, Graeme says hisinvolvement over the past four decadeswas largely due to the support of his wife,Fay. “In everything many of us can achievethroughout our lives, there is little thatdoesn’t require the understanding andbacking of our spouses” he says. “Fay hasalways been a tremendous comradewhether that’s while raising our family, keeping the home fires burning or makingdecisions or sacrifices alongside me. I’mfortunate she has enjoyed the social side ofLions as much as I have and I’ve really ap-preciated that. It’s been a very rewarding45 years and god willing, there’ll be a fewmore years left in me yet!”Caron Stewart.
Lions acknowledge a life honour
Absolutely delighted to be presented with a Lloyd Morgan Life Honour, Graeme Waterson ispictured with his wife Fay, grandchildren Stella, Drew and Ryan, daughter Bridget, daughter-in-law Nadine and son Duncan.

Nigel Elliot has had plenty of excite-ment in the boxing ring, but he got toenjoy another type of knockout thrilllast week at Matamata when he saddled uphis first winner as a racehorse trainer.Elliot and his wife, Tammy, own and trainEl Nymph, who broke through for her firstwin in seven starts when scoring decisivelyin the hands of Matamata apprentice TaikiYanagida. El Nymph, a four-year-old daugh-ter of El Roca, had sound lead-up form con-sisting of a second at Matamata last monthand a third at Taupo 11 days later and forTammy it was a welcome return to the win-ner’s circle, having previously won a racewith Red Tsunami at Tauranga on March2016 when training at Tauranga.‘’It’s pretty hard to get Tammy emotional, but I was making a bit of noise,’’ said Nigel.‘’I was enjoying the moment. It was beauti-ful. We always knew she should win a raceand we were quietly confident she wouldwin. She won it well so we’re hoping she canwin more.’’ Even if El Nymph doesn’t winwithin the next month, Nigel and Tammyare sure to have a celebration with the birthof their second child due within the next fewweeks. ‘’I had to lead the horse around be-cause Tammy’s belly has got a bit big,’’ helaughed. ‘’We’ve got a one-year-old andwe’re looking forward to our second child.’Nigel and Tammy have a lifestyle block atLichfield with its own small training track, but head into Matamata to do the fast workwith their few horses. That trip gives Nigelan opportunity to catch up with some of hisclients in his role as a boxing manager andpromoter. Nigel has used his experience asa boxer to help promote the sport and thathas included promoting and staging boutsaround the Waikato, sometimes includingjockeys, namely Troy Harris, Lynsey Sather-
ley, Jake Bayliss, Toni Moki and JordanNason. ‘’I’ve promoted a few of those showsand they’ve been a success,’’ said Nigel. ‘’I’vealso got a gym at Putaruru and do boxingtraining four days a week with 15 classes, including boxing, amateur boxing and kick-boxing. That and the horses keeps me busy.’’Elliot’s family comes from a backgroundin trotting, but he grew fond of the thor-oughbreds when going to the races with hisfather. ‘’My dream was to one day trainhorses,’’ he said. ‘’I had shares in horses. Oneof them was 20 percent in Red Tsunami, when he won for Tammy. But six years agoI didn’t even know how to saddle up ahorse.’’ Nigel picked up some valuable ad-vice from Tammy, who spent time working
for Tauranga trainer Brian McKeagg, and hegained his owner-trainer’s licence in 2015-16, but it took 58 starts for him to celebratesuch a winning milestone. Between times heand Tammy got married and the pair havepottered around with a few horses. ‘’We didhave three in work, but we’re down to two,’’said Nigel. ‘’As well as El Nymph, we’ve gotan Ocean Park two-year-old who we hopeto be racing later on. I’m still learning abouttraining, but I love it.’’Last week’s Matamata meeting also pro-duced some top winning performancesfrom Cornflower Blue, Escudo, Kamakaze,Limentis and Hola Senorita. There was botha sense of relief as well as excitement be-hind the win of Cornflower Blue after her
debut second on the course last Februarybehind unbeaten stablemate Need I SayMore. The Waikato Stud-owned and bredCornflower Blue raced away to a six and ahalf-length win over 1200 metres fortrainer Jamie Richards, who has his sightsset on the Group 1 New Zealand 1000Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton in Novemberfor the daughter of champion sire Savabeel.‘’It was a pretty exciting win from a filly thatwe’ve had a lot of time for,” said Jamie. “Shehad a small stress fracture in her cannonbone and needed a good, long break afterher debut run in February and thankfullythe Waikato Stud team, Dr. Chris Phillips,Kerrie Cox and Sam McLeish, along with ourvet, Ronan Costello, gave her plenty of timeto get over that and it’s all in front of hernow.’’ Escudo, trained by Lance O’Sullivan andAndrew Scott, gave both Taiki and the West-bury Stud sire El Roca their second wins ofthe day. “We always had high hopes for her,but the COVID lockdown and the extra timeshe got has been a massive aid to her andlooking at her today in the ring, she hasbloomed into a lovely big filly,’’ said An-drew. Kamazake, a five-year-old son of Bat-tle Paint, has proved a pleasant surprise fortrainers Peter and Jess Brosnan, being un-beaten in both his trials and now in his tworaceday starts, while Limentis, trained byBev and Ken Kelso, produced a big effort tocharge to victory in the Matamata Veteri-nary Services 1400 and, though she had towait until her seventh start for the win, shepromises to win again at short notice. HolaSenorita, trained by part-owner Vicki Pren-dergast and ridden by Sam Collett, was hav-ing her fifth start when she cleared maidenranks over 1400 metres in game fashion.Wally O’Hearn.

With three happy, healthy adultchildren, Keren Dean thought shehad well and truly done her timewith babies – that is until she was luckyenough to find second love with the manshe now calls her husband.“When we got together Kendall wasn’ttoo fussed about having his own children”says Keren, “but, a few years later, and aswe planned a long term future together, the subject resurfaced and we decided itwould be nice to welcome a child into theworld together. He has always been an in-credibly patient and tolerant role model inmy kid’s lives so, apart from being slightlyconcerned my age might impact on preg-nancy, I agreed we could try.”As fate would have it, Keren was unluckyto experience early menopause which re-sulted in a zero egg reserve and ultimately,no chance of conceiving naturally. The cou-ple were in a position however to look atIVF and thankfully, with donor eggs, a vi-able embryo resulted. “Kendall and I wereover the moon” says Keren, “particularlyas it had taken around five years and a realemotional rollercoaster to get to this point. At our 20 week scan however, we were ad-vised that there looked to be a problemwith our baby’s heart and were referredfor further scanning in Auckland.”Although the diagnosis of HypoplasticLeft Heart Syndrome (HLHS) followed andobviously left the couple in shock initially,Keren and Kendall had absolutely nodoubt they would deal with whatever pre-sented, and give their unborn child everypossible chance of leading a loved and
happy life on the outside! “Basically HLHSis a condition that means during preg-nancy, the left side of the heart doesn’tform correctly” says Kendall, “and as a re-sult, several surgeries will be required toensure blood flow and the congenital heartdefect doesn’t adversely affect her qualityof life as she grows up.”Born on March 30 by caesarean section -five days into alert level 4 lockdown fol-lowing the announcement of Covid-19,
Maddie was immediately admitted to NICUwith tubes inserted to help with breathing, feeding and the administration of medica-tions to keep her heart valve open. CTscans were performed and, after beingtransferred to PICU, had constant one-on-one specialist monitoring. “Due to rigidCovid procedures, only one of us could bewith Maddie at any given time” says Keren,“and thankfully, Kendall was an absolutetower of strength throughout those earlyweeks. He studied the procedures our little
sweetheart had to endure, became famil-iar with copious amounts of medical jar-gon and was able to relay everything backto me in language I could understand -even in my tired and somewhat emotionalstate! I truly could not have done this with-out him so I guess, for us; lockdown was insome ways, a blessing in disguise!”After four months in hospital, two seri-ous surgeries including having a shunt in-serted, a scare with dehydration which ledto a blood clot and blocked shunt, severereflux and a paralysed vocal cord (which itis hoped, will naturally repair within herfirst year), Keren and Kendall were finallyable to bring their daughter home just overthree weeks ago. “We still have a long wayto go” says Keren, “but are hopeful herfeeding tube will be replaced with a Mic-Key button by Christmas and her vocalcord palsy will improve. This will meanMaddie can receive nutrition, fluids andmedicine through a low-profile tube di-rectly into the stomach and with any luck, soon transition to a bottle and solids. Forthe moment though, we are extremely for-tunate to have an excellent team of medi-cal professionals on speed dial, the mostwonderfully supportive family, friends andneighbours and in particular, two extraspecial people that have not only experi-enced a very similar journey, but been soincredibly generous with their love, kind-ness and support. We are luckier than wecould ever have imagined and althoughour wee girl only has half a heart, she’s def-initely doubled the size of ours and all ofthose who love her.Caron Stewart.

Matamata College boy’s hockey team had agreat tournament in the Hawkes Bay lastweek under the leadership of team man-ager, Serena Pilmore-Evans. They sufferedlosses, celebrated wins, and draws, but thor-oughly enjoyed the experience, growing as ateam over the course of the week. Although itseemed strange to have empty grandstands withonly a few supporters, the boys are hoping forthe opportunity to return next year and makethe top five.Year 9 student, Jackson Donderwinkel hasbeen successful again in 2020 with his kayaking.Jackson entered three races in the U14 men’scategory in the “Kayak Krazy series” run underCanoe Racing NZ. He raced 5km in the Bay ofPlenty placing 2nd, followed by Karapiro, alsoplacing 2nd. As Jackson had competed two racesout of the series, he was eligible for a medal atLake Okareka, in Rotorua. This is where theCanoe Racing NZ 2020 NZ Championship tookplace. Jackson placed 2nd and received a silvermedal for U14 men. He also took out 2nd place in
the points tally of the overall series. Congratula-tions Jackson, awesome results. Our 1st XI girls’ hockey team have not hadmany home games this season but last week, met Cambridge High School here on their hometurf. In a keenly contested match, the teams bat-tled out a 1-1 draw, well done girls. Our girlshockey 2nd XI played Dio junior B team and won2-1. This has pushed them into third place afterthe quarters. The boys played St Pauls junior Aand won 9-0 which has them on the top of thetable after the quarters. Our lacrosse A team are back in full swing andrecently played Cambridge High and won 10-9.Well done girls. Our Year 12 PE students havebeen working with the Intermediate to helpthem with training for an upcoming Whaanaugames tournament. Students from year 11, 12and 13 are involved in supporting this eventwhich will see a number of sports being played. Our students are designing and running all thesesessions which gathers evidence for theirachievement standards.
Braedyn Henderson and Jack Reynolds havebeen selected in the team to represent Waikatoat the 2020 AON New Zealand Junior NationalInter-District Teams Squash Championships thatwill be held at the new eight court Christchurchsquash club in October. Team members will alsoplay in the individual event held prior to theteam’s event. Braedyn also played in theWaikato graded champs recently where he com-peted in the men’s B grade division. He playedincredibly well to secure second place.I took a group of students to Whakatane forthe Waikato/Bay of Plenty cross country champsrecently. This event is extremely tough andbrings out the best of the best over the two dis-tricts every year. The first race was the year 9girls taking on two loops of the 1500m course. We had Bella Dye, Lucy Lawrence and Leah Ja-cobsen in this race. Bella managed to place 11thwhile Lucy came 25th and Leah 26th. Up nextwere the year 9 boys who also completed thetwo laps. We entered Fletcher Van Heuven andJackson Donderwinkel into this race. Fletcher
came in 14th and Jackson ran 39th. Ella Smartdid the same course as the year 9s in her juniorgirls class, she managed to race to a 16th placefinish. Kevin Tiddy took on the senior boys trackeven though he is only 15! This means he had tocomplete three loops of the 2000m course.Kevin ran incredibly well against boys a lot olderthan him, with a final placing of 24th. All theserunners did so well - we didn’t get to compete inany other running events this year so goingstraight to the top event was not an easy task. They all took it in their stride and managed torun some great times to bring these incredibleresults home. The day was hot, the pace was in-credibly fast and not one of our students lookedto even slow down. Taking on the top runners intwo regions is a huge deal and the places theysecured, and their attitudes have made me superproud. Well done! The college sports club are participating in theLions Fertiliser drive this coming Saturday so itwould be great to see the community support atthis incredible event again.
