Scarborough Castle

Perched high on a headland above the North Sea, Scarborough Castle occupies one of the most dramatic castle sites in the country and boasts over 2,500 years of turbulent history. Before the castle was built, this natural fortress was favoured by prehistoric settlers before serving as a Roman signal station and Viking haven. It has endured sieges from medieval kings and Civil War armies, and German naval bombardment during WWII. Now you can climb to the battlement viewing platforms for dramatic coastline views, and take tea in the 18th-century Master Gunner’s House.Dates Opening Times Opening Days 21 Mar - 30 Sep 10am - 6pm Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, & Sun.1 - 31 Oct 10am - 5pm Mon, Thu, Fri, Sat, & Sun. 1 Nov - 31 Mar 10am - 4pm Mon, Thu, Fri, Sat, & Sun. Scarborough Sea Life and Marine Sanctuary

The Sea Life Centre is open all year round, and because it is constantly changing, it is always worth a visit - just remember to wrap up warm if you are visiting on a cold day, as some parts of the centre are outdoors.  Kids love seeing the creatures up-close, so it makes a great family day out, with lots to see and do. From a wildlife point of view, you will get great views of animals like Seals, Otters and Penguins as well as many of the underwater creatures that would normally be hidden beneath the waves. There are local species among the exhibits as well as some from more exotic locations.  Many of the exhibits have signs and notices to tell you a bit about the species you are looking at, making it an educational trip if you take the time to read them.Open 7 days a week 10am - 4.30pmClosed 25 DecScalby Mills, Scarborough, YO12 6RP Tel: 01723 373414

Creative centre

The Grade ll listed marine villa, built in 1835 for the civil engineer, George Knowles. The house overlooks the English Heritage-registered Valley Gardens below, and onwards to the sea. It was the birthplace of Edith Sitwell in 1887 and played a strong role in the literary lives of Sir George’s children (Osbert, Edith and Sacheverell) until he eventually disposed of it to Scarborough Council in 1934. The Council operated the Wood End Museum Of Natural History in the building up until 2006, when it was adopted for the creative workplace development. Woodend provides purpose-built managed workspace to support individuals, companies and enterprises, operating in the digital, media and creative sector. Our primary focus is to encourage new ideas and talent and help create and sustain new and existing businesses. Woodend is operated and managed by Creative Industries Centre Trust Limited, a not-for-prot company that leases the building from Scarborough Borough Council. The Trust is committed to assisting and supporting the growth of the creative industries sector in the area through the provision of quality workspace and programmes that attract and develop new business and jobs in the sector and support cultural regeneration. The Crescent, Scarborough, YO11 2PW Tel: 01723 384500
