15

Page 16: SBA Component HKDSE English Language Exam

Recommendations (1)

• Students should be exposed to well-constructed presentations and understand that the amount of information they present depends on the time given

• The body of the presentation should consist of two or three main ideas, which need to be explained or supported so that they are clearly understood

• When students try to present too much information, they tend to speak quickly without proper pauses and intonation and they make more language slips

16

Page 17: SBA Component HKDSE English Language Exam

Recommendations (2)

• Students need to be aware that the purpose is to discuss/complete a particular topic/task together, so coherence is very important

• Listening to what other members are saying is crucial

• Avoid writing a mini-speech beforehand and then reading it aloud

• A good interaction needs the participation and cooperation of every member of the group so students need to learn the various communication strategies

17

Page 18: SBA Component HKDSE English Language Exam

Recommendations (3)

• Understand that there is a difference between written language and spoken language in terms of formality

• Students need to practise the basic speaking skills before they can use them effectively and naturally

• Students should take every opportunity to practisespeaking outside lesson time

Suggestions for Running Within-school Sharing Sessions for S5 and S6 teachers

• Who should attend: Teacher assessors of the same form

• Procedure: 1. Start with anchor set (Green DVD)

2. View the samples (H, M & L) from different classes

3. Assessors discuss students’ performances (give enough time for this)

• Focus should be on the students’ PERFORMANCE in the assessment, not impression of students’ abilities / efforts / attributes, etc.

• Give sufficient time for assessors to share good practices and assessment tasks in each class

35

Page 36: SBA Component HKDSE English Language Exam

Moderation of SBA Marks

• All schools submit samples of students’ work for review by SBA DCs

• Statistical moderation conducted by the HKEAA

• Supervisor and M-AD to make final adjustment to individual schools with reference to statistical moderation and the sample review
