Assessment Criteria for Experiments
Ability Assessment Criteria
Practical skills
and
Worksheet/
Report
Apparatus handled competently
Procedures carried out safely
Instruments appropriately used to make accurate readings / measurements
Objectives and procedures of the experiment understood
Observations and/or data recorded appropriately
Interpretation of results
Drawing relevant conclusions
11
Assessment Criteria for Investigative Study - Proposal (2%)
Ability Assessment Criteria
Proposal writing
Background knowledge is demonstrated clearly
The plan is well-organised with clear objectives, concise rationale of study and feasible procedures
The plan shows that the investigative study can be completed within an appropriate time interval
Risk assessment has been made
12
Assessment Criteria for Investigative Study – Process (2%)
Ability Assessment Criteria
Process skills
Good manipulative skills are demonstrated
Results are accurately and concisely recorded in an appropriate format
The procedures are modified whenever necessary
Collaborative skills, problem solving skills and self-discipline are demonstrated
13
Assessment Criteria for Investigative Study – Report (2%)
Ability Assessment Criteria
Report/ Presentation
Relevant terms and concepts of physics are used throughout the report
The objectives, procedures, results and discussion are presented in a concise, systematic, logical and analytical way
There is effective communication of knowledge of physics / findings
14
Teachers’ guidance
Provision of background information (handout/pre-lab talk)
Advice of effective time management
Importance of keeping a log to keep track of work at different time
Teacher-student interaction
(Assessment must be fair and students’ work must be original.)
15
Assessing students’ performance
Group work is allowed (Marks awarded should base on individual performance)
Teachers can decide on the no. of students to be assessed
Teachers can design their own mark scheme (checklist)
Assessment marks reflect rank order and relative difference between students’ achievements
Assessment of outside-class work – conducted under teacher’s supervision
16
10-point Mark Scale
Marks Quality of work
10-9 Excellent
8-6 Good
5-3 Fair
2-1 Poor
Zero marks for failure to meet the minimum requirement of assessment standard.
17
Moderation of SBA mark
statistical moderation
“school” as the unit for moderation
Both mean and the SD of SBA scores from a school will be adjusted with reference to the public examination scores
students’ SBA marks may be adjusted but rank order is preserved
outliers identified will be followed up with appropriate actions
