    Saying “I Love You”

February brings us Valentine’s Day and thoughts of love. In a crisis counseling course I took a few years ago, the instructor was a trauma center nurse. She daily dealt with people who were undergoing traumatic experiences and also dealt with the families of such persons. Often the people brought into the center died. She said many of the family members of those who died felt guilt, often overwhelming guilt, if their last words to the person who died had been something like a fight.

Based on her experiences, the instructor said she and her family (husband and children) began to always say “I love you” every time they separated physically or quit talking on the phone, etc., even if they had been having disagreements. That way no matter what might happen to them, the last words they would have said to their loved ones were “I love you,” and the last words they would have heard were “I love you.”

The worst that can happen to us is death. God says “I love you” all through the Scriptures. He said that to the people of Israel and finally he showed them and us how much that love meant through Jesus Christ, as John 3:16 reminds us.. Through Christ, our ultimate enemy, death, is overcome by the love of God.

Listen to God saying “I love you” in your life and practice saying “I love you” to those nearest and dearest to you on a regular basis, not just on Valentine’s Day.. In Christ, David Northcutt, Parish Associate
