    Second Family

Our congregation is blessed with having people of all ages, but we, like most

Protestant churches, have a large older group. Within that group are folks who can no

longer care for themselves. Some of those people are in care facilities and some are being

cared for at home by family members.

Being a caregiver is a full time job and can really be draining on the person or

persons doing that. Several years ago Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church helped start a

program called Second Family which set up teams to assist caregivers by having volunteers

form a care group around a particular caregiver/care receiver family. They did various things

from pick up groceries to call and/or visit on a regular basis. They would sometimes sit with

the care receiver so the care giver could go to a movie, go out to eat, or just get out of the

house for awhile. Some did home maintenance from light chores to changing light bulbs.

Often youth would help with yard work. The team was large enough that no one volunteer

had to do too much, although if someone were willing to pick up groceries, for instance, they

might be on more than one team.

The Second Family program is now part of a non-profit organization called Interfaith

Caregivers which also has several other programs For example, they have regular

opportunities for caregivers to attend workshops on everything from medical benefit

paperwork for the care receivers to intergenerational living and care giving, assessing risk

and home safety to understanding hospice. Of course, while the caregiver is attending

those workshops, someone from the Second Family team sits with the care receiver.

at Southminster in April. If you are interested in at least hearing more about it, please call

me and indicate whether you would rather meet (1) during the Sunday School hour,
