HALF OURS' DECEMBER DOUBLE-DOUBLEBy Tom Hall
Half Ours has been Santa Claus to Clear Creek
Stud, delivering four new stakes winners for the
holidays. Of Half Ours' five new 2015 stakes winners,
four arrived in December. New Year's Eve at Fair
Grounds Race Course & Slots, his juvenile offspring
won both Louisiana Futurity races. Smittys Cougar
trounced her rivals by 9 3/4 lengths in the filly divi-
sion an hour before Half Cajun took the male coun-
terpart by 4 1/2.
Earlier in the month the pride of Clear Creek
scored another Fair Grounds stakes double: On Loui-
siana Champions Day his 4-year-old daughter Plati-
num Lady won the Ladies Sprint Stakes and 3-year-
old son Jockamo's Song took the Sprint Stakes.
Half Ours, a gray 14 year-old son of Unbridled's
Song—Zing, by Storm Cat, has sired 12 stakes win-
ners. Since first appearing on the Louisiana sire list in
2011 at No. 26, he has risen steadily to rank among
the top 10 every year. In 2015 he was Louisiana's
leading sire with $3,013,717 in earnings and six
stakes winners. BH

NYRA OFFERS INCENTIVES FOR JUVENILESBy Tom LaMarra
The New York Racing Association will increase
purses for some 2-year-old maiden races this
spring offering financial incentives to owners and
bonuses for New York-bred runners in juvenile
maiden races.
In a schedule announced Jan. 1, NYRA will offer
six $100,000 maiden races from April 20-May 19,
two at Aqueduct Racetrack and four at Belmont
Park, as "trials" for the Astoria Stakes for 2-year-
old fillies and Tremont Stakes for 2-year-olds later
in the spring at Belmont. The standard purse for
maiden special weight races is $75,000, meaning
another $150,000 will be available in the six trials.
Winners will earn 50% of the purse, and all run-
ners get a check.
The New York-bred bonuses apply to all open
or state-bred 2-year-old maiden special weight
events for Aqueduct and Belmont. Owners will
receive $9,000 for a win, $4,500 for second, and
$2,500 for third. Trainers would get a $4,000 bonus
for first, $3,000 for second, and $2,000 for third.
The New York Breeding Fund will contribute
$200,000 to help pay the $25,000 in total awards
available for each race. BH

RECORDS FOR AMERICAN PHAROAH, CASTELLANOBy Frank Angst
With its year-round format, horse racing offers few
opportunities to look back, but Jan. 1 is one of
those as Equibase.com posts the final season statistics
for the top horses, jockeys, trainers, and owners in
searchable categories such as earnings and wins.
On the equine side—newsflash—American
Pharoah dominated. The Triple Crown winner
established a single-season earnings record while
his owner Zayat Stables finished 2015 as leader
by earnings. American Pharoah won seven graded
races and earned $8,288,800, breaking the previous
single-season record set in 2004 by dual-classic win-
ner Smarty Jones when he earned $7,563,535 (which
included a $5 million bonus).
Trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey Javier Castel-
lano again finished on top (for the sixth consecu-
tive and third consecutive year, respectively). At
$28,120,767 in
purse earnings,
Castellano broke
his own single-sea-
son record set
in 2013 to lead
the annual North
American leading
jockeys' list. Cas-
tellano also led all
other riders in wins
in 2015, a feat he
also accomplished
in 2013. BH
BLUEGRASS CAT THRIVING IN CALIFORNIABy Eric Mitchell
Bluegrass Cat arrived in California with momentum,
having topped the New York state sire list in 2013
and possessing enough quality runners to finish third
among Golden State sires for 2014.
Ballena Vista Farm's grade I-winning son of Storm
Cat is back on top in 2015 with Northern Hemi-
sphere progeny earnings of $5,563,497. Bluegrass
Cat is also the state's leading sire by number of win-
ners (143), black-type stakes winners (7), stakes wins
(11), and graded stakes winners (two). He is one of
five active California stallions with a grade I winner
this year, a list that includes Affirmative, Edding-
ton, Square Eddie, and Street Hero. Bluegrass Cat's
grade I winner Linda Linda (CHI) won the Alberto
Solari Magnasco in Chile in October.
Numbers were on Bluegrass Cat's side in 2015
with 249 runners, compared with the late Tribal Rule
who was next closest with 168. Bluegrass Cat covered
70 mares this year versus a book of 58 he had his last
season in New York, so the numbers will continue to
favor him. BH

KING KRANZ IS A MAIDEN NO MOREBy Tom LaMarra
Grade II-placed but a maiden after five starts,
Zayat Stables' King Kranz finally got his elusive
first win in the first 3-year-old stakes of 2016, the
Lost In The Fog Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack Jan. 1.
Blinkered for the first time, King Kranz, by 2015
leading second-crop sire Munnings, sat just off
front-running Zen Papa, took over in the final six-
teenth and held off Jan's Reserve to win the six-fur-
long event in 1:11.84 on a fast track.
Trained by John Terranova and ridden by Corne-
lio Velasquez, King Kranz, a $95,000 Ocala Breeders'
Sales Co. March 2-year-old purchase was beaten
only three-quarters of a length by undefeated
Mohaymen in his second start and finished second
to Annual Report as the favorite in Belmont Park's
Futurity Stakes (gr. II).
He subsequently ran third in the James F. Lewis III
Stakes at Laurel Park. Returned to maiden company,
he fell a neck short of Condo King, who scratched
from the Lost In The Fog to run in Aqueduct's Jan. 2
Jerome Stakes (gr. III). BH
DAIWA MAJOR TOP 2-YEAR-OLD SIREBy Naohiro Goda
At the conclusion of the 2015 Japan Racing Associ-
ation season Dec. 27, a new name occupied the
top of the leading 2-year-old sire list.
Daiwa Major, by Sunday Silence, ended the reign
of Deep Impact, who had held the title since 2010,
the year his first crop reached racing age. Daiwa
Major became 2015's leading juvenile sire by both
number of winners and earnings.
A winner of five grade I events, including back-to-
back editions of the Mile Championship (Jpn-I), Daiwa
Major went to stud at Shadai Stallion Station in
2008, a year later than Deep Impact. He was the top
first-season sire in 2011 and has been ranked among
the top 10 on the 2-year-old sire list every year since.
In 2015 Daiwa Major, who finished second in his
only start at 2, had 39 2-year-old winners, four more
than Deep Impact. His winners include Major Emblem,
the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies (Jpn-I) victor, and Ball Light-
ning, winner of the Keio Hai Nisai Stakes (Jpn-II).
His 2-year-olds earned ¥668,435,500 ($5.54
million), ¥66,155,500 ($548,440) more than Deep
Impact's juveniles. BH

SEEING VALUE IN OLD HAT EXACTA PLAYS
Trainer Stanley Gold has returned Jacks or
Better Farm's homebred Ballet Diva to
sprinting following the Hear No Evil filly's failed
try at two turns. The newly turned 3-year-old
looks poised for a top effort Jan. 2 in the Old Hat
Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park.
Ballet Diva won her first two starts, includ-
ing the Cassidy Stakes in her second effort in
gate-to-wire fashion. Racing in the juvenile filly
division of the Florida Sire Stakes series, Ballet
Diva gradually stretched out, winning the sev-
en-furlong Susan's Girl before finishing sixth in
the 1 1/16-mile My Dear Girl.
Returned to sprinting, Ballet Diva delivered a
two-length victory in the six-furlong House Party
Stakes Nov. 28 at Gulfstream Park West. Ballet
Diva tries that distance again in the Old Hat.
On paper, the race appears to have two early
runners: Ballet Diva (9-5 on the morning-line)
and undefeated 8-5 favorite Lucy N Ethel who
ships in from Parx Racing after
winning her first two career
starts there. Starting from the
rail in the field of six, Ballet Diva
figures to go with Lucy N Ethel,
either tracking or choosing to
surge early.
Either way, I prefer Ballet
Diva, who already has success-
ful experience starting from the
rail at Gulfstream as she won
her first two career starts there
from post one. If this early battle
takes shape, I again prefer Ballet
Diva because of her experience.
While she has dueled early in
several races, a contested early
pace would be something new
for Lucy N Ethel.
Assuming I'm right about that, there's a fairly
good chance Lucy N Ethel could blink here,
allowing one of the other starters to rally for
second. Those exacta plays could provide value.
Dad's Kiddo rallied for second in the House
Party and certainly could do so here. The other
horse I could see rallying is longshot My Dear
Venezuela (15-1 ML), who came from just off the
pace in her previous maiden win but figures to
be farther back here.
The play: Rather than spend any money on
win wagers—Ballet Diva figures to be under 2-1
and ultimately could be favored—we'll pursue
extra value in the exactas. $14 exacta Ballet Diva
over Dad's Kiddo (1-3), $6 exacta Ballet Diva
over My Dear Venezuela (1-4), plus a $3 exacta
3-1 and $2 exacta 4-1.
Last week: Runhappy ran like the champion
he is, costing the column $25 in our bet against
his low value. The column closes 2015 with
$1,860.20 earned on $552.50 in wagers. Here's
to trying to approach that ROI in 2016. BH
