KEENELAND NOVEMBER

MILL RIDGE TO OFFER JUDDMONTE, AUGUSTIN RACEHORSESBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

Projected has been a consistent stakes performing homebred

for Juddmonte Farms who has been knocking on the door of a breakout win, with one grade 2 triumph to his credit and 13 stakes placings over a five-year career to date.

Winner of the 2017 edition of the Baltimore/Washington International Turf Cup Stakes (G2T), the 7-year-old gelded son of

Showcasing has won or placed in 20 of 30 starts en route to earning $613,840. Despite that success, Projected (Hip 2724) does not fit the standard set by Juddmonte to continue in Prince Khalid Abdullah's stable and he is among racing prospects set to be sold Nov. 12 during the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

The Juddmonte horses, as well as a draft of racehorses from George Strawbridge's Augustin Stable, are consigned by Mill Ridge Sales.

Among the other racehorses scheduled to be offered by Juddmonte without reserve is Monarchs Glen, a 5-year-old gelding by super horse Frankel who won the 2017 Darley Club

Stakes (G3) in England and is cataloged as Hip 2715.

KEENELAND NOVEMBER

Mill Ridge's Headley Bell said the Juddmonte horses provide an opportunity to move quality bloodstock with continued racing potential into other racing programs.

"We are fortunate to have Juddmonte horses that haven't met their standard, which is a very high standard," Bell said. "They have a great following of people that look for Juddmonte horses. People know Juddmonte and the richness of their program. They're in the best hands, and know if they need time, they get time. So often, people like to buy these horses from Juddmonte because they know they are well cared for and are sound. They go and provide a great experience for (the new owner). And they offer value because Juddmonte doesn't put reserves on them. It takes at least two bidders.

"Projected is a well-bred, gelded son of Showcasing and has always been on the edge of being a special horse. He's got some age, so it's one of those opportunities," he added.

Among the racing or broodmare prospects Mill Ridge has consigned Tuesday on behalf of Augustin are the winning fillies River Light (Hip 2451) and City Fun (Hip 2606), both trained by Jonathan Thomas.

A 4-year-old daughter of Union Rags, River Light was produced from the stakes-placed Wild Rush mare Dirty Rush. River Light is a half sister to Rush Now, a multiple stakes winner who finished second in the grade 2 West Virginia Derby and earned $612,039.

By Temple City, the 3-year-old City Fun is out of Summer of Fun, a stakes-winning Include mare who finished third in three graded stakes including the grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

"A cull from George Strawbridge or Juddmonte is a jewel for most people, in my opinion," Bell said. "For the most part, it's time to find new homes for these horses."

Bell said scheduling the two sessions that include racehorses during the second week of Keeneland's November sale offers a niche within the market that attracts a different buying bench.

"WinStar Farm pioneered the racehorse segment of the November sale and others have built upon it," he said. "Credit Keeneland for providing this niche. It's great. It brings a whole new group of buyers in for the sale." BH

Eddie Neloy lost an eye during the battle of An-

zio in early 1944, as the Allies launched their final attack against the Germans on Italian soil. Later, he trained Gun Bow and Buckpasser.

Sgt. Charles Edward Whittingham and the rest of the U.S. Marines 2nd Division landed on Guadalcanal in August 1942 in the first major American offensive of the Pacific Theater. Whittingham dodged the Japanese bullets but was

felled by malaria. He survived to become a training legend.

Noble Threewitt, also a veteran of the Italian campaign, came home wearing a piece of shrapnel as a war souvenir. That did not stop him from going on to saddle nine straight winners at Tanforan, win major stakes in California, Florida, and New York, and train until his 96th birthday in 2007.

Alfred Vanderbilt captained a PT-boat and earned a silver star.

it through bad times in Vietnam. Would there have been a Native Dancer, a Convenience, a Lost in the Fog, or a Zenyatta without them? Maybe, but thankfully we didn't need to find out.

Leonard Dorfman, who worked for Tom Smith when Seabiscuit was in the barn, went off to war with the Army's 84th Division as a mortarman. In December of 1944, Dorfman and his comrades found themselves defending the town of Marche-en-Famenne, under siege from a phalanx of Panzer tanks during the Battle of the Bulge.

"They could have come right through us," Dorfman once recalled. "We didn't have enough to stop them. I don't know where we got the ammunition, but we kept those mortar shells dropping and managed to hold on.

"We had a perimeter defense around the city," Dorfman added. "The Belgian people insisted on digging our foxholes. And those people have never forgotten. A friend of mine went back there once and was treated like royalty."

Veterans do not ask for that kind of treatment. They gladly settle for what they are promised for their service. Anything short of that is part of this country's ongoing national embarrassment, which is only magnified on a day like Nov. 11, Veteran's Day.

That's why this reporter figured it was time to check in with former jockey agent Boone McCanna at Down the Stretch Ranch, near the eastern Oregon town of Creston.

Down the Stretch is a relative newcomer to the Thoroughbred retirement and rehabilitation scene—launched in 2014 with a donation of the McCanna family property and seed money from Jerry and Janet Hollendorfer. Some 28 retired racehorses currently reside at Down the Stretch in service to a therapeutic program for military veterans with psychological challenges—veterans who have found

peace and purpose in the handling of horses."There's a young guy here now who fought in Iraq

in '04, '05, and '06. He just showed up with everything he had in a backpack," McCanna said. "He just couldn't handle the city. He just shells up with anxiety when he's around people. He'd never been around a horse, but he's quiet and gentle, and now he can go out in the field and catch any one of them."

McCanna represented jockeys Frank Alvarado, Dennis Carr, and Kevin Krigger, among others. All were beneficiaries of the record number of Hollendorfer winners in the Bay Area.

"Without Jerry and Janet this place would not be here," McCanna said. "He checks in all the time, including last week after they sold Vasilika."

The Hollendorfers were co-owners of the $1.5 million mare who had just finished second in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) and then sold to Japanese breeder Katsumi Yoshida during The November Sale, Fasig-Tipton's Fall breeding stock auction.

"There have been probably 60 of their horses we've had that are still here or that we've adopted out," McCanna said." Jerry said he'd be sending a chunk of the Vasilika money we can use to build some better structures for the guys. They show up with a suitcase and a sleeping bag, and that's all they've got."

The names of many of the Down the Stretch horses will ring familiar bells with loyal horseplayers. Stakes winner Poker Brad, now 21, made 40 starts and earned $437,354. Summer Hit won back-to-back runnings of the All American Stakes (G3T) at Golden Gate Fields. Stakes winner Moonshine Bay won 18 races and $436,002, while Trumpet Player Jay, named for Santa Anita hornblower Jay Cohen, made 59 starts and earned more than $230,000.

"He's the quirkiest horse," McCanna said. "I have to run him into the round pen to catch him. But once you do, he's putty in your hands."

In addition to ongoing support from private individuals and an annual fundraising golf tournament, Down the Stretch is one of the many organizations supported by Thoroughbred Charities of America and Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.

"The hardest thing has been to find the guys who really need the help," McCanna said. "The ones who've heard of us and show up are great, and now they're helping us reach the guys who are hiding out, who go deep cover and end up committing suicide.

"It's such a tragedy what's going on in our industry, with people keeping count of horses breaking down," McCanna added. "Well, how many of our mentally ill among these vets die at night, with nobody around? Nobody's keeping a running count on that." BH

JUDDMONTE SETS ARROGATE'S 2020 FEE AT $50,000By BloodHorse Staff

Juddmonte Farms announced the 2020 stud fees for the farm's US-based stallions. Four time grade 1

winner Arrogate, the richest North American racehorse in history with earnings of $17,422,600, will stand the 2020 breeding season for a fee of $50,000 stands and nurses.

Bred in Kentucky by Clearsky Farms, Arrogate is out of the multiple stakes-winning Distorted Humor mare Bubbler. The 6-year-old son of Unbridled's Song was named the 2016 champion 3-year-old after scoring five consecutive wins that culminated in victories in the Travers Stakes (G2)—in which he won by 13 1/2 lengths and set the track record for 1 1/4 miles—and the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1).

He then kicked off his 4-year-old season with a score in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) and followed it up with an impressive last-to-first win in the Dubai World Cup Sponsored By Emirates Airline (G1). Arrogate retired with a record of 7-1-1 from 11 starts.

Arrogate's first weanlings sold at the November breeding stock sales, highlighted by Hip 704 selling for $425,000 during the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. His weanling average at both Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland was $311,250.

Grade 1 winner Mizzen Mast enters his 17th year at stud for a fee of $7,500 stands and nurses. The

22-year-old son of Cozzene has sired nine grade/group 1 winners to date. His son Killybegs Captain won the Sept. 21 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash (G3) at Laurel Park. BH

KEENELAND NOVEMBER

CONSTITUTION DOMINATES KEENELAND'S BOOK 4 OPENERBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

As the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale moved into Book 4 Nov. 11, the level of trade

predictably did not approach the numbers generated in the previous five sessions, but it was still competitive for the better lots.

With buyers keen to acquire foals of 2019, the session-topper was Hip 2080, a colt by the second leading first-crop sire Constitution purchased by Dailey Bloodstock for $150,000 from James M. Herbener Jr., agent.

Keeneland reported 253 horses grossed $7,413,700, down from the $7,755,900 paid for 242 on the same day a year ago. The average fell 8.6% to $29,303, and the median rose 10% to $22,000.

Cumulatively, from 2,359 cataloged for the first six days, 1,410 horses have been sold for $176,476,400, compared with the $174,078,900 total paid for 1,389 at the same juncture in 2018. The average is almost

identical—$125,161 this year compared to $125,327 in 2018—and the median is down 10.5% from $67,000 to $60,000. The cumulative RNA rate is 22.4%.

Chad Schumer, the day's leading buyer with 10 horses purchased for $368,000, said part of his motivation for buying Fortune Candy, a 12-year-old mare by Milwaukee Brew, for $130,000 was the fact she was in foal to Constitution, a member of a stallion class that appears strong.

"It is obviously a very strong cover," he said. "This is probably the deepest group of freshman sires we've seen in a long time. While American Pharoah is the real deal—he got some tremendous mares and I have great respect for him—I think Constitution is also the real deal. To get a stakes-producing mare in foal to him is a no-brainer."

Consigned by Zach Madden's Buckland Sales, agent, as Hip 2275, Fortune Candy is the dam of multiple stakes winner Art G Is Back and is out of the multiple stakes-placed Lit de Justice mare Freedom Come, the dam of grade 3 winner Harlem Rocker.

Also selling for $130,000 was Iadorakid (Hip 2324), a 6-year-old Lemon Drop Kid mare in foal to Creative Cause and a half sister to grade 1 winner El Tormenta. Consigned by Lane's End, agent, the mare was purchased by agent Jason Hall.

"Foals are still really sought after," said Mark Taylor, whose family's Taylor Made Sales Agency is the sale's leading consignor. "If you get a good one that passes the vet you're going to get a premium for them."

On the flip side, there isn't much of a market for mares that have been unable to throw a foal that has earned black type, even if they are in foal to promising young stallions.

"Mares below $100,000 are harder to sell than they used to be," he said. "There are some mares going through here that are covered by some pretty nice stallions—young stallions with $20,000-$30,000 fees. You can buy those mares for less than the stud fee if you're willing to buy a mare that has a few foals that haven't gotten black type."

Taylor said the tendency by breeders to want to move mares even at a loss in an effort to improve the quality of their broodmare bands provides opportunity for those willing to take a shot.

"There is an opportunity for somebody who can raise a horse well and take care of it themselves and keep their costs down," he said. "Some of these mares that you can buy for under $25,000, if they a nice foal that is a B+ or better and vets, it can bring $150,000 as a weanling next year. Of course, we all know it could bring $5,000." BH

RENEE DAILEY STOCKS UP ON CONSTITUTION WEANLINGSBy Meredith Daughertyt @BH_MDaugherty

Renee Dailey of Dailey Bloodstock contin-ued her quest for Constitution weanlings

Nov. 11, purchasing a $150,000 colt from the consignment of James M. Herbener Jr., agent, to the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

The price was the highest brought by any weanling on the day.

"We are in pursuit of Constitution and we're trying to stick to buying colts from here on out," said Dailey, who purchased the weanling on behalf of new partnership. "My partners feel very strong about Constitution being the next Into Mischief so I felt like he was the best one I had seen so far. (We're) big fans of Constitution so we're looking for the good ones and I feel like we got one this time."

Consigned as Hip 2080, the bay colt was bred in Kentucky by Herbender and Dr. and Mrs. Patrick J. Ford, VMD. He is the 10th foal out of the Dixie Union mare Spikes, who has also produced stakes-placed winners Powerpointer and Awesome Together. The colts extended family includes stakes winners O Dionysus and Joy, as well as Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) victor Vinceremos.

Hip 2080 was the second of three Constitution weanlings purchased by Dailey over the first week of the sale. She went to $40,000 for Hip 1487, a filly by the WinStar Farm sire consigned by Four Star Sales, agent. Bred in Kentucky by the Constitution Syndicate and Dr. and Mrs. Charles H. Huber, the filly is out of the Songandaprayer mare Humble Song and is from the female family of graded stakes winner Around the Cape.

Buying as agent for B & B, Dailey picked up Hip 2289 for $57,000 near the close of Monday's session. Consigned by Select Sales, agent, the bay son of

Constitution is the first foal out of the Artie Schiller mare Glamour Queen, who is a half sister to stakes winner Midst. He was bred in Kentucky by Tommy Wente and the Constitution Syndicate.

Dailey has also purchased a Connect colt (Hip 1735), a Practical Joke filly (Hip 1472), and a Mohaymen colt (Hip 1876). Total receipts for her six weanling purchases comes to $580,000.

"I have a lot of different clients and they come together in different ways," Dailey explained. "Some are in the sale group, some are in all the groups together, we're very liberal in partnering with people, and I think it's a good way to make business.

"Carrie Brogden and Craig Brogden have been very supportive of me at this sale as well as John Greathouse. We've had a lot of different partners that come from them and I think it's going to be fun. I think we will have a great group of people next year with these horses and I think we will have fun at the sales." BH

UNBRIDLED'S SONG MARES STRONG LURE FOR MACHMER HALLBy Meredith Daughertyt @BH_MDaugherty

Sandy Willwerth of Machmer Hall stretched be-yond her initial estimations Nov. 11 to purchase a

$135,000 daughter of Unbridled's Song consigned as Hip 2246 to the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

The mare, Dontwasteurpretty, had the kind of pedigree that Willwerth said her daughter—Carrie Brogden of Select Sales and Machmer Hall Farm—has never been able to resist.

"She's beautiful," Willwerth said. "She was a $500,000 yearling and we have an addiction to Unbridled's Song mares. They've been very good to us. I know my daughter, and if I didn't get this mare... it's like Christmas and a birthday."

Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency as Hip 2246, Dontwasteurpretty was bred in Kentucky by Black Rock Thoroughbreds out of the Deputy Minister mare Wonder Lady and is a half sister to stakes winner Yes She's a Lady. The mare's second dam is

the Irish-bred grade 3 winner Gather The Clan, who produced American Oaks Invitational (G1T) winner

Pure Clan.Pure Clan is the dam of another

talented turf runner in Princesa Carolina, who placed third in the Oct. 12 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes presented by Lane's End (G1T) at Keeneland.

In addition to Pure Clan, Gather The Clan also produced Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) winner Greater Good and stakes-placed winner Gather the Day, the latter of which is the granddam of Madison Stakes (G1T) scorer Finley'sluckycharm. Gather The Clan also appears as the granddam of Sky Diva, winner of the 2008 Frizette Stakes (G1).

KEENELAND NOVEMBER

Offered to the 2014 Keeneland September Yearling Sale by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, Dontwasteurpretty was purchased by the late J.J. Crupi of Crupi's New Caste Farm for $500,000. The mare made eight starts for St. Elias Stable before being retired at the end of 2017. She produced a filly by Overanalyze in 2018 and a colt by Greenpointcrusader in 2019. She was offered in foal to the November Sale back in foal to Overanalyze.

"We've had a good year and she's a long-term purchase," said Willwerth, who added the price was just over where she hoped it would be. "We were thinking $100,000, but we were there."

Willwerth said Dontwasteurpretty will join the burgeoning broodmare band at Machmer Hall, which is currently comprised of close to 120 mares. Willwerth estimates conservatively 40 of those mare are daughters of Unbridled's Song.

"There is always room for one more," Willwerth said. "They're aren't making anymore and they haven't made any more for a long time. We're happy."

Dontwasteurpretty is the fifth mare purchased by Machmer Hall this year from the November sale and the second by Unbridled's Song. Their first purchase by the late stallion was Hip 905, Wild Summer, from the consignment of Indian Creek, agent. Out of the grade 3-winning Summer Squall mare Summer Raven, Wild Summer is a half sister to graded stakes winners Lewis Bay, Misconnect, and Winslow Homer. Bred in Kentucky by Alpha Delta Stables, she was purchased by

Macher Hall for $55,000.The farm also purchased two

weanlings, a filly and a colt by Constitution, and the stakes-placed Two Shakes, a 3-year-old Exchange Rate filly. Total receipts so far for the sale come to $889,000 for seven individuals. BH

AGENT FARRELL TO $145,000 FOR CONSTITUTION FILLYBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

When Oklahoma horseman Rusty Roberts bought the Tiznow mare Red White and Blu in foal to

the WinStar Farm stallion Constitution for $6,500 from Four Star Sales at this year's Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale, the timing couldn't have been better.

A son of Tapit who stood for $15,000 in 2019, Constitution is on fire with his first foals to race this year. Four graded stakes winners helped boost him to second on the first-crop sire list, and he'll stand for $40,000 in 2020.

The subsequent filly produced from Red White and Blu was purchased by Marette Farrell, agent for John Cummins, for $145,000 during the Nov. 11 session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

The filly was consigned Monday as Hip 2034 by Alliance Sales Agency, which is operated by Kathryn Kinder, the daughter of veteran Kentucky horse breeder Ralph Kinder. Most fortuitously for Kathryn Kinder, she had entered into a deal in which Roberts gave her the mare in exchange for the cost of taking care of the Constitution filly foaled March 22.

Ralph Kinder and other partners subsequently bought the 2019 filly privately from Roberts.

"Rusty is always looking for a bargain," Ralph Kinder said of Red White and Blu's price in January. "He made a deal with my daughter for her to raise the baby with no bills and he would give her the mare."

Red White and Blu is a daughter of the Siphon mare Lajitas, a half sister to Travers Stakes (G1) and Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner and sire Colonel John and to three stakes-placed runners, including Santa Anita Derby third-place finisher Mr. Hot Stuff.

Farrell, whose successes at picking precocious young horses includes this year's TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Storm the Court, said she and partners in a pinhooking venture are big fans of the WinStar stallion.

"We have loved Constitution, his babies, and his 2-year-olds, and this filly was especially athletic," Farrell said. "I liked the female family and liked where she was raised. Our team made a determination this morning that she was at the top of our list and we were going to try our hardest. I think she is a really special physical and she's a really, really good mover.

"I've made the mistake before of walking away from something like this and I think Constitution will keep going on." BH s Share this story

ANALYSIS

FLATTER DEMONSTRATES YEARLING VALUE IN PROVEN SIRESBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

As has been pointed out by consignors throughout this year's auction season,

buyers are putting heavy emphasis on the progeny of young sires.

It is no surprise then to see rates of return ranging from 36% to 208% among the leading first-crop yearling sires of 2019, according to statistics compiled by BloodHorse MarketWatch as part of its annual review of the yearling auction market. A complete set of statistics by sire and by sales are available in the Nov. 16 issue of BloodHorse magazine.

Claiborne Farm's sire Runhappy leads the first-crop sire class with a 208% ROR from 59 yearlings sold in North America. These yearlings were bred on a $25,000 stud fee and produced a $227,000 average at auction.

MarketWatch calculates ROR using the same formula to determine profitability. We estimate a yearling's cost at two times the stud fee plus an estimated $20,000 to raise and get a yearling to a sale. After the yearling sells, we deduct 5% for the sales commission and calculate the ROR using our cost and the net sale price.

Seven freshman sires had their sale yearlings generate RORs greater than 50%: Darley's Nyquist (125%) and Frosted (77%); Shadwell Farm's Tamarkuz (70%); WinStar Farm's Outwork (60%); Airdrie Stud's Upstart (54%); and WinStar's Speightster (51%).

Given the emphasis on younger sires, then, it is impressive to see Claiborne's Flatter ranked at the top by ROR at 88%, among all sires represented by two or more yearling crops. Flatter shares the top spot with Lane's End's second-crop yearling sire Liam's Map.

Flatter, a 20-year-old son of A.P. Indy, is the definition of a solid stallion. Out of 13 crops of racing age, he gets 61% winners from foals to race and his runners average $89,901 in purses. He has been

represented by 54 (6%) black-type winners to date, which include 19 graded stakes winners and two champions.

After entering stud in 2004 at Claiborne at $5,000, Flatter has steadily proved himself and now enters the 2020 breeding season sporting a $40,000 stud fee for the third consecutive year.

ANALYSIS

Flatter's 2019 sale yearlings actually generated a 109% ROR based on the sire's 2017 stud fee, which is the fee breeders' paid when the yearlings were conceived. MarketWatch calculates two RORs—the fee at conception and the current year fee—to provide some insight into what commercial breeders' might expect down the road. Flatter's fee in 2017 was $35,000, so all the market influences that boosted his 2019 yearling average to $198,088 delivered rewards to the breeders of 2017.

A couple of high-profile runners in 2018 helped remind owners what Flatter is capable of siring, led by multiple grade 1 winner and 2017 champion 3-year-old colt West Coast and multiple Canadian classic-placed stakes winner and champion Avie's Flatter. For 2018, Flatter took 10th place on the North American general leading sire list with more than $10.4 million in progeny earnings. West Coast was his leading earner among the 10 black-type winners that represented him that year.

After Liam's Map, the third- and fourth-leading sires by 2019 ROR are both second-crop yearling sires: WinStar's Constitution (81%) and Ashford Stud's Competitive Edge (69%). The yearling

sale results for both of these sires provide some optimism for the breeders of 2019. Constitution and Competitive Edge were represented by RORs of 29% and 27%, respectively, when calculated using their 2017 stud fees. Their fees have since been lowered, which would produce an 81% ROR for Constitution and a 69% ROR for Competitive Edge at current yearling values.

Already these sires' progeny are showing enough ability to put them among the top five in their freshman sire class—Constitution ranks second and Competitive Edge ranks fifth by progeny earnings through Nov. 10. Both sires also have racing histories

and pedigrees that favor their runners continuing on in good form—Constitution as a son of Tapit who became a grade 1 winner at 4, and Competitive Edge, a son of Super Saver, who was a graded winner at 3. Racing luck is what it is but, for now, the commercial future looks bright for the progeny of both sires. BH

COMMAND POST RETIRED TO WYNOAKS FARM IN PENNSYLVANIABy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Command Post, a stakes-placed son of Harlan's Hol-iday, has been retired and will stand the upcoming

breeding season at WynOaks Farm in Pennsylvania at a fee of $2,000 with a stands and nurses guarantee.

Campaigned by Gary and Mary West and trained by Jason Servis, Command Post hit the board in all but one of his seven starts. He won three times and finished a troubled third to multiple stakes winner Phat Man and multiple graded stakes-placed Talk Logistics in the 2017 Long Branch Stakes at Monmouth Park en route to earnings of $104,110.

"We are excited to add Command Post to our stallion roster," said WynOaks Farm’s Barbara Wheeler. "He has an exceptional pedigree and he has a lot to offer Pennsylvania’s breeders. We believe he’s going to be very well received."

The late Harlan's Holiday, who died in 2013, was a three-time grade 1 winner and earner of more than $3.6 million. As a stallion, he has sired 95 black-type winners

and six champions, including 2012 Eclipse champion 2-year-old colt Shanghai Bobby and 2014 Canadian champion 2-year-old filly Conquest Harlanate.

Bred in Kentucky by Dattt Farm out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Danzig's Humor, Command Post hails from a female family rich in black type. Danzig’s Humor is out of the grade 1-placed, graded stakes winner Danzig's Beauty, making her a half sister to multiple graded stakes winner, track-record holder, and influential sire Distorted Humor (Forty Niner), who has sired 155 black-type winners to date and was the leading North American sire in 2011. Danzig's Humor is also a half sister to graded-placed, stakes winner Dancing Gulch (Gulch) and to winner Danzig's Dreamer, the dam of graded stakes winner and stakes producer Liam's Dream.

Command Post is one of five winners from five to race produced by Danzig's Humor. The mare also has produced One Way, Venezuela's champion 2-year-old colt of 2017, and Venezuelan listed stakes winner Freely.

WynOaks Farm also stands Warrior's Reward and Weigelia. Breeders can view all three stallions during a stallion show Nov. 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. EDT. BH

FORMER RACING EXECUTIVE FLYNN DIES AT 65By BloodHorse Staff

Robert F. (Bob) Flynn, a mainstay of the New York Racing Association racing office for 18 years before

becoming executive director of the New York Thor-oughbred Horsemen's Association and a member of the NYRA board of trustees, died Nov. 9 in Melville, N.Y., after a long illness.

He was 65 years old and is survived by his wife Judy."He was an incredible guy and he just loved

the game," said longtime friend Peter McGivney, the general manager of the National Steeplechase Association and a former NYRA racing office colleague. "He loved being at the track and being around people who appreciated horse racing. Everyone loved him."

Flynn, a proud son of the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, attended LaSalle Academy. He later received both a Bachelor of Arts and an MBA in finance from Fordham University.

He was hired by NYRA racing secretary Tommy Trotter as a clerk in the racing office in 1976 and spent 18 years there, the last six as assistant racing secretary.

Flynn was appointed as executive director of the New York division of the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (later the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association) in 1994. He served in that capacity until 2007.

He also served on the NYRA board of trustees for approximately 18 months during that time.

Well-liked and highly regarded by horsemen, elected officials, and media, Flynn received the New York Turf Writers Association's "Red Smith Good Guy Award" in 2003.

A wake will be held Nov. 12 at Cassidy Funeral Home, 156 Willis Avenue, Mineola, N.Y., from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be

held at Corpus Christi Church, 155 Garfield Avenue in Mineola Wednesday at a time to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Flynn's name to the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center's "Let's Do Lunch" program, which provides physical, intellectual, and social stimulation for individuals with young onset dementia, including frontotemporal degeneration. The center is located at 300 Forest Drive, East Hills, N.Y. 11548. BH

DISCIPLINARY PANEL RULES BROCK MADE HONEST MISTAKEBy David Baxter/Racing Post

Under-fire jockey Danny Brock made an honest error rather than attempt to gain an advantage

when using a modified whip in a race at Chelmsford, an independent disciplinary panel has found.

The panel gave Brock a seven-day suspension in October for marking a horse with a whip wrapped with two elastic bands and Nov. 11 published the reasoning behind that decision.

Brock's winning ride on Resurrected in September had come under intense scrutiny in recent days after an outcry on social media, with the jockey telling the Racing Post last week he had received death threats and feared his career could be over because of the controversy.

Having been initially fined £140 by the race day stewards, Brock's penalty was changed to a seven-day suspension, which he has already served.

"I would like to apologize to the public and my work colleagues, as well as the trainers and owners who I ride for," Brock said in a statement Monday. "I am hoping now that this can be put behind me and I can move forward and be given a second chance."

Much of the hearing centered on Brock's explanation as to why the bands were on the whip, as his initial explanation to the race day stewards had been difficult to follow.

Solicitor Rory Mac Neice, taking detailed instructions from Brock, explained the jockey had left the elastic bands on his whip by accident. Brock's reasoning for the bands being on the whip was he sometimes used them around his wrists to hold his silks neatly in place.

Brock asserted he generally kept the bands on the gear stick of his car, then transferred them when going into racecourses. He thought he may have transferred the bands on to a spare whip before his Chelmsford ride as an alternative place

to stow them, but then mistakenly took this whip onto the racecourse and subsequently used it on Resurrected.

The rider accepted he was at fault, but it was a negligent error rather than premeditated.

Despite initial misgivings regarding Brock's explanation, the panel was assured via a number of factors that he was not trying to mislead them.

Lyn Williams, representing the British Horseracing Authority in the case, told the panel it was not possible to say, one way or the other, if the rubber bands on the flap of the whip could have affected its compression factor. As a consequence the BHA did not make a case that the addition of the rubber bands had been the cause, in whole or in part, of the horse's minor welting to its left rear hindquarter.

In addition, the BHA had checked on-course CCTV footage before and after the race to observe Brock's behavior and also made other inquiries to see if there was any evidence of his deliberately adding the bands to the whip. Brock was shown to have behaved normally, and made no attempts to conceal the bands attached to the flap of his whip.

After being found initially in breach of Rule (F)44 in not carrying an approved whip, Brock was fined £140. While there was no case to answer that he had misused the modified whip, Brock's carelessness was deemed "serious," so his fine was rescinded by the panel and replaced by a seven-day ban.

The panel noted: "He (and for that matter other jockeys) need to be fully aware of the damage to the reputation of racing that can arise if non-compliant equipment is used, even if this happens by mistake."

The BHA last week announced its intention to review penalties for using modified whips as a result of the case.

GARSWOOD JOINS HARAS DE LA HUDERIE IN NORMANDYBy Martin Stevens/Racing Post

Group 1-winning sprinter Garswood is being trans-ferred to stand at Haras de la Huderie in Norman-

dy next year. The 9-year-old son of Dutch Art, owned by Highfield

Farm, has spent the first five seasons of his stallion career at Cheveley Park Stud in Newmarket.

"We're very pleased to have Garswood; he's a big, fine horse and he's settled in very well," said Haras de la Huderie's Beranger Bussy. "We're looking forward to him covering a nice book of mares."

Garswood was bred by Cheveley Park Stud out of the Kyllachy mare Penchant, who is now owned by Lynch Bages and produced last year's Moyglare Stud Stakes (G1) fourth Zagitova by Galileo.

The dam is a half sister to Leslie Harrison Memorial Nell Gwyn Stakes (G3) winner and Coronation Stakes (G1) runner-up Infallible, who found further fame by producing Queen Anne Stakes (G1) second Mutakayyef and this season's Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes (G1) heroine Veracious.

Trained by Richard Fahey for Highfield Farm's David and Emma Armstrong, Garswood broke his maiden in the listed Harry Rosebery Stakes and ran a head second to Bungle Inthejungle in the BMW Cornwallis Stakes (G3) at 2.

With Cheveley Park Stud having bought back in to the bay, he took the CSP European Free Handicap and Lennox Stakes at 3, the same season in which he finished a creditable third to Moonlight Cloud in the Qatar Prix de la Foret (G1).

He claimed deserved group 1 laurels at 4 when he denied Thawaany and Fiesolana to land the LARC Prix

Maurice de Gheest.Garswood has two crops of racing

age, and his best performers are the group 3 winners Cala Tarida—also a close fifth in the Prix de Diane Longines (G1) in June—and Little Kim, who was sold to Howson and Houldsworth Bloodstock for £200,000 (US$242,020) at the Goffs UK Goodwood Sale in July.

He is also responsible for the smart handicappers Gabrial The Wire and Pendleton.

Garswood will stand at Haras de la Huderie alongside Bet365 Superlative Stakes (G2) winner Birchwood—coincidentally a former Highfield Farm color-bearer—who had his first foals on the ground this year.

ANIMAL KINGDOM ADDED TO JBBA STALLION ROSTERBy Naohiro Goda

The Japan Bloodstock Breeders Association re-leased stud fees for the 2020 breeding season.

This year, the JBBA will introduce the 2011 American champion 3-year-old colt Animal Kingdom, winner of the 2011 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) and 2013 Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emir-ates Airline (G1).

Animal Kingdom, who shuttled to Australia in 2013-14, is the sire of Angel Of Truth who won the Harrolds Australian Derby (G1) earlier this year, and the stallion has also sired two Japan Racing Association winners. His fee for 2020 has been listed as ¥1.2 million (US$10,909) live foal stands and nurses.

Declaration of War, who was imported to Japan prior to the 2019 breeding season and also shuttled

to Australia in 2014 and 2016, is the sire of Vow And Declare, winner of the Nov. 5 Lexus Melbourne Cup (G1) at Flemington in Australia. Declaration of War has so far proved popular with Japanese breeders, covering 152 mares during the 2019 season. His fee remains at ¥2.3 million ($20,909)—the most expensive fee among 11 stallions at the JBBA.

Eskendereya was represented Nov. 2 by Mitole, winner of the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) at Santa Anita Park. The Sprint marked Mitole's fourth top-level win. Eskendereya's fee has been reduced to ¥1 million ($9,091) in 2020 from ¥1.5 million over the last three years.

The second most expensive stallion in residence at JBBA is dual group 1 winner Makfi, who stands for ¥2.2 million ($20,000). His fee has remained unchanged since he entered stud duty in 2017. The son of Dubawi is the sire of Mkfancy, who took the Oct. 26 Criterium de Saint-Cloud (G1) in France. BH
