Sebastian Hutch has dismissed

suggestions Inglis is facing extra

pressure heading into its first auction of

2021, the Classic Yearling Sale, after the

company’s arch-rival achieved record results at

the season-opener on the Gold Coast last month.

The Riverside Stables three-day

sale, starting tomorrow, could provide

further evidence of almost unprecedented

demand for young racing stock in Australia

if Classic continues the upward trend set by

Magic Millions in January following a year

of uncertainty caused by the coronavirus

pandemic.

However, if the first of three select

Inglis yearling sales scheduled for this year does not live up to stakeholders’

expectations, it could put the spotlight firmly on the intense battle for

market share between the two Australian auction houses.

Hutch, Inglis’ general manager of bloodstock sales and marketing,

did not see the inevitable comparisons between the Gold Coast sale and

Classic as an issue.

“Genuinely, we don’t feel any more pressure than normal and we want

to do well at every sale we go to,” Hutch told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“There are processes we work through to try and mitigate the risk of

things not going well and we do everything that we can throughout the

year to try and maximise the buying power at each of our sales.

“Certainly on the evidence of inspections and the feedback from

vendors, it feels like there’s going to be good representation from buyers

on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.”

The 620-lot Book 1 catalogue, which is followed by the Highway

Session on Tuesday, and the record of Classic graduates has Hutch

optimistic about what will occur in the coming days.

“It is a sale that caters for a very broad cross-section of buyers, maybe

more so than any other sale in Australia. You can buy Group 1 winners for ten

and 20 grand here and similarly buy Everest winners for $400,000,” he said.

“We have a well diversified catalogue which appeals to people looking

for any profile of horse, whether it’s a two-year-old, a stayer, a filly with a

pedigree or a colt who can go on and be a stallion and we are delighted to

see so many people here.

“There are more people arriving and there are also a lot of people who

are going to be represented from afar by agents, trainers and consultants.

“At this stage the sentiment seems positive and we are looking forward

to a good sale.”

Melbourne Group 1-winning trainer Lloyd Kennewell, who has

been at Riverside Stables this week inspecting yearlings with agent

Mathew Becker of Group 1 Bloodstock, remains uncertain about market

expectations for the Sydney sale but knows the long-held view of the

Classic sale has changed significantly in recent years.

“At Classic you used to be able to come in and buy a cheap horse for

not a lot of money, but over the past few years Classic sale prices have shot

up,” Kennewell said.

“This year is a different year, so I don’t know what to expect really

… but having said that,

I don’t think there’s any

stone left unturned (by

buyers) to get to a yearling

sale now.

“Everyone’s got

someone with eyes there

looking at horses for them

and that’s what it is all

about. No horses really get

through the cracks these

days.”

James Mitchell, one half of the father-

and-son Mitchell Bloodstock team, described the catalogue “as a typical

Classic sale” with the opportunity for traders to enter the market.

“We have had a bit of luck trading (out of Classic). We had a Capitalist

gelding who we sold at the Inglis breeze-up sale (in October for $550,000),”

Mitchell said yesterday.

“We will probably look to do that again, but we learnt a few things

from that sale and we will certainly be looking to refine our selection

process this year.

“Proven stallions are a key and we will probably be pretty hard on

them because we’re unsure how the market is going to hold up throughout

the year.

“But by the way it feels out here, it’s going to be a reasonably strong

sale again,”

Newgate Farm stud manager Jim Carey has overseen the Hunter

Valley operation’s 30 yearlings being offered at the Classic sale and he

is confident their horses will attract strong buyer attention after the

benchmark was set at the Gold Coast.

He points to Newgate’s growing reputation as a farm producing elite

racehorses - which includes last year’s Classic graduate, Inglis Millennium

(RL, 1100m) favourite Profiteer (Capitalist), and 2018 Group 1-winning

flagbearer Shadow Hero (Pierro) - as well as a high number of on-farm

inspections in the lead-up to tomorrow’s sale.

“We have a fantastic bunch of two-year-old winners from our yearling

crop from last year and we couldn’t be happier with how everything is

going,” Carey said.

“We raise our yearlings as naturally as possible. There is very little

time spent in stables. All the fillies are out together and they are just

being racehorses and I think that is ringing true on the racetrack with our

success over the past

few years.”

The $2 million

Inglis Millennium

will be run for the

third time today

and for the first time

at Randwick. Hutch believes the two-year-old race and the supporting

$1 million Inglis 3YO Sprint (1100m) is a great advertisement for the

company’s sale graduates.

“I think what the raceday and race series does very effectively is

highlight the quality of horses you can buy at Inglis sales as a whole,” he

said.

“When you look at the three-year-old race it is effectively a Group 1

race in all but name with arguably Sydney’s best three-year-old filly Dame

Giselle and Australia’s most valuable racehorse in Australia, Ole Kirk, are

both in it, so it is a proper race.

“I also have great respect for what a guy like (form analyst) Daniel

O’Sullivan says, so when he said what he said about Profiteer (being

comparable to Extreme Choice), it’s hard not to take note of that, so it

looks significant that he is in the Millennium.

“There are a number of unexposed horses in the race and it helps

build momentum for our sales series, absolutely.”

Day one of the Classic sale starts at 10am tomorrow.

Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale delayedThe start of the Magic Millions Perth Yearling

Sale will be delayed by three days and will now

be held on February 18 and 19. The decision

to delay the sale was made in relation to the

Covid-19 restrictions recently in place in

Perth, Peel and south west regions of WA, as

well as complexities surrounding the local

bushfires. “Taking all issues into consideration

and, after speaking with our industry partners

including RWWA and TBWA, we found it

necessary to delay the sale by a few days,” Magic

Millions managing director Barry Bowditch

said. “The new dates will enable vendors,

prospective buyers and industry members to

have confidence in the auction and enable

participation in a Covid safe environment.” Day

one of the sale will commence at 1pm (local

time) on February 18, with over 300 lots set to

be offered. Accordingly, official inspections will

commence at the Magic Millions Sales Complex

in Middle Swan from Sunday, February 14.

Inglis Digital open for bidding The Inglis Digital February (Early) Online Sale

is open for bidding, with 186 lots offered online.

The catalogue, which was finalised yesterday,

features 109 racehorses, 40 broodmares,

20 shares and 14 yearlings among other

offerings. The final countdown of bidding for

the February (Early) auction will begin from

Jockeys, trainers return after Covid scareJockeys Damien Oliver and Jye McNeil, along

with trainers Denis Pagan, Ciaron Maher, Robbie

Griffiths and Mathew de Kock, have been cleared

to return to licensed racing premises after a

Covid-19 scare. All six attended a Victorian Racing

Media Association lunch on Monday, where one

of the attendees later had to be tested for Covid-19

after they were found to have visited an exposure

site linked to a hotel quarantine worker that tested

positive for the virus. Subsequently, all six were

temporarily barred from attending license racing

premises. Damien Oliver returned to action at

Moonee Valley last night.

Nature Strip impresses KahNature Strip (Nicconi) continued his

preparation for the next weekend’s Black

Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) with

an impressive victory in an 800-metre jump-

out at Flemington yesterday, pleasing his new

rider Jamie Kah. Nature Strip defeated likely

Lightning rival Swats That (Shamus Award) by

three lengths, posting a time of 45.24 seconds,

with September Run (Exceed And Excel)

finishing last of the three-horse field. Kah was

taking her first sit aboard Nature Strip and

was delighted with the experience. "I was very

excited about this morning," Kah told Racing.

com. "He gave me an amazing feel. He trialed

super, he has just got so much class about

him. Obviously he is just a horse who feels

like he is cantering and feels like he is going so

slow but he is just covering so much ground."

Trainer Chris Waller added: "He is such a fast

horse and has had the benefit of the two trials

before today. I guess this morning just shows

how much natural speed he has. He probably

brought himself undone last preparation, so we

are mindful of that and asked Jamie to sit nice

and tight this morning. I don't get too carried

away with winning trials."

to see. She won’t have too hard a week and then

on Wednesday morning she’ll probably have

another little gallop and that will tighten her right

up and have her ready for Saturday. Going into

last preparation we had three trials but she was

probably ready a bit too early and I had to tick

her over for quite a while whereas this time we

look spot on.”

Capitalist (Written Tycoon). Kalashnikov, Collier

Bay, Russian Standard and Captivant all won

their respective contests, with the latter bidding

to prove himself a bona fide Golden Slipper

contender. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained

Captivant, who finished fourth in the $1million

Golden Gift (1100m) when last seen in the

spring, comfortably landed his 735-metre heat

under James McDonald. Russian Standard was

impressive in winning his heat by a slightly

quicker time, leading all the way to beat Sunlight’s

(Zoustar) brother Dio by a length. Capitalist

will be represented by three runners in today’s

Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) at Randwick,

while Marine One will take his chance in today’s

Blue Diamond Prelude (Colts & Geldings) (Gr 3,

1100m) at Caulfield.

Shamus Award progeny impresses CorstensThe progeny of Shamus Award (Snitzel),

including Swats That, have proved successful

in Leon and Troy Corstens’ yard and Umgawa

(Shamus Award) will aim to continue that

trend in the Blue Diamond Prelude (Colts and

Geldings) at Caulfield today. "I've got about six

or seven and there’s not one I'd give you at the

moment," Corstens told Racing.com. "We're

having a great run with them. They are easy

horses to work with, they are all good types

and have great attitudes. I like them a lot. You

can get a sprinter, you can get a stayer, you

can get a miler. I think he's going to be a really

good stallion." Shamus Award, who stands at

Rosemont Stud for a fee of $19,800, has nine

stakes winners to his name and Cortens is

hoping outside chance Umgawa can take his

sire to double figures. "I'm not sure he's up to

this level as these are the best colts going into

the Blue Diamond, so it'll be interesting to see

where we are at in the pecking order," Corstens

said. "He was OK on his debut and he was really

good in his trial (third at Geelong) the other

day. He's only had the one trial, so we are going

to ride him with a bit of cover and get back a

bit and let him finish off and see where he's at."

Wolves after Prelude gloryIn today’s fillies’ equivalent of the Blue

Diamond Prelude (Gr 2, 1100m), Neville

Murdoch is hopeful his homebred filly Wolves

(Wolf Cry) can build on her fifth-placed finish

behind Dosh (Rich Enuff) in the Blue Diamond

Preview (Fillies) (Gr 3, 1000m) at Caulfield last

month. The Greg Eurell-trained filly was sent off

a rank outsider for that contest but will likely go

off considerably shorter today. "Greg says she's

done nothing except eat and hasn't put a foot

wrong," Murdoch told Racing.com. "I wasn't

the happiest with barrier one but there's no

choice in it and who would know, maybe we'll

get a gap this time. She deserves to be there

and she's certainly not an $81 chance this time,

that's for sure. We think she'll run very well.”

Jigsaw aiming to secure Diamond spotCindy Alderson is hopeful her unbeaten colt

Jigsaw (Manhattan Rain) can secure a spot in

the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in a

fortnight with a strong performance in today’s

Blue Diamond Preview (Colts and Geldings). The

two-year-old was impressive on debut at Geelong

last month, posting a three and a quarter-length

win over subsequent winner Artorius (Flying

Artie). "Michael Walker knows him well and said

Monday was the best he's ever worked and pulled

up, so that's very promising going into Saturday,"

Alderson told Racing.com. "He eats up everything

and he's been very sound in faultless condition so

that's probably his best asset that he's got a good

attitude. I'm really excited to see what he does on

Saturday, but he'd have to finish in the top three to

earn his place in the Blue Diamond."

Nonconformist looking to conformWhile winning a stakes race at a mile first-up

is generally not an oft-used tactic, the Carlyon

Cup (Gr 3, 1600m) at Caulfield has been won

the last three years by fresh horses in Gailo Chop

(Deportivo), Avilius (Pivotal) and Miss Siska

(So You Think). Grahame Begg, who trained

Miss Siska, hopes the trend continues with

Nonconformist (Rebel Raider) today as he begins

his path towards the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m)

next month. “I was really encouraged by his trial

at Geelong over a week ago on a Thursday where

he finished off strongly to finish second behind

Sir Dragonet," Begg said. "That was a good pointer

that he's in for a great campaign. He galloped well

on Tuesday. He's trouble-free and ready to go.

People are chasing the money (with the All-Star

Mile) but I'm happy to chase the prestige in the

Australian Cup. It looks like a good year to aim

it up with victory over 1200 metres at Sandown.

"He's been very impressive at both of his starts.

He steps up into stakes grade but he deserves a

shot at it on what he has done so far," O'Brien

said. He is also keen to see Victoria Derby- (Gr

1, 2500m) third Young Werther return, saying

he has developed well since the spring when he

only had three starts. "He might need a couple

of runs but he should run a forward race,"

O'Brien said. "I've set him for the longer three-

year-old staying races in Sydney in the autumn

with the ATC Derby his main target."

Amish Boy aiming for Autumn Stakes winAmish Boy (Star Witness), who was due to be

sold to Hong Kong before failing a vet test,

will line up in the Autumn Stakes today with

connections hoping the failed move can prove

a blessing. The three-year-old colt finished

runner-up behind Aim (Star Witness) in the

Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) on

his last start and is well-fancied to go one better

today. "He probably needs to win a Group 2 or

Group 1 for it to be financially the right result,

but he's obviously providing an awful lot of joy

for both the owners and for us," Dave Eustace,

who trains in partnership with Ciaron Maher,

told Racing.com. "It's great to have a horse in

the stable of his capabilities that is improving

as well. We did seriously consider the Orr but

we decided to go this route instead. He's not

a Stakes winner yet and if he can be a Stakes

winner then that allows us to have plenty of

shots at Group 1 level."

Mountney set for first stakes runnerAnthony Mountney will saddle his first stakes

runner today when Belieber (Zoustar) lines up

in the Eskimo Prince Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). His

stablemate Gave Me You (Sizzling) also has a

big contest on his hands in the $1 million Inglis

3YO Sprint (1200m), as he takes on hot favourite

Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon). Both horses

are owned by Anthony Bertuccio and Tony

Lavalle, who have established a private racing

operation at Kembla Grange with Mountney

as their trainer. Mountney, who has over three

decades of experience with horses around

the world, said: "I suppose over the years I've

had success in a lot of other things and done

well with other competitions overseas so you

don't get overawed by it. Yes it's a stakes race

and we want success for the owners, we want

the horses to be safe, but at the end of the day

it's no different, for me personally, to taking a

maiden horse to Kembla Grange. If the work

is done at home there is nothing for me to get

too nervous about." Of their chances today,

Mountney added: "They're obviously rank

outsiders. We're taking young kids in against

mature men," Mountney said. "The thing for me

is for the staff to be excited, they do a great job,

for the ownership group to be excited and I get

enjoyment from that."

Richards pair tackle RubitonMorphettville trainer Gordon Richards will have

a two-pronged attack in today’s Rubiton Stakes

(Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield. Garner (Barbados)

and Bold Star (Needs Further) will both resume

in the contest off the back of trial wins at Gawler

and their autumn campaigns will likely be

determined by today’s performances. “Garner

may well have improved a little bit on last

preparation,” Richards told Racing SA. “Instead

of being a run below the really good ones, it

would put him right up there with them. I’m

hoping this will be his preparation. They

both raced really well in the spring without

a lot of luck. In his last run Garner knuckled

at the start and was making good ground at

the finish. He would have made it interesting

if he’d jumped clean – and there are some

big wraps on (race winner) Ancestry.” On

their possible targets, Richards added: “The

Oakleigh Plate is the obvious one and if

everything is good, it’s on to the Newmarket.

But you would need to have done something in

the lead-up to genuinely earn a crack in a race

like that.”

Greyworm bids for Group 2 successGary Lui, managing owner of the popular Team

Hawkes-trained Greyworm (Master Of Design),

is hopeful of a strong performance in today’s

Rubiton Stakes. Lui, a pilot, owns Eden Park

Stud and has been grounded in Hong Kong

for the past four months due to the Covid-19

pandemic, which has kept him away from his

stud farm and the racetrack today. "I am unable

to commute to Australia as we are only flying

out the cargo planes at the moment, so we are

just on standby," Lui told Racing.com. "Many

people have lost their jobs so I'm fortunate to

be still on the ground working." Lui has enjoyed

tremendous success with Greyworm after

purchasing him for $110,000 from the Inglis

Digital platform in January 2018, so much so

that he and his partner Hannah Martin decided

to purchase his sire Master Of Design. "We liked

Greyworm so much and we thought if we put

some of our own mares to Master Of Design,

he might get a good opportunity," Lui said. "He

isn't overly commercial and probably doesn't

throw those two-year-old types but for anyone

with some patience, he throws a number of

winners week-in, week-out." Master Of Design

stands as Eden Park Stud's foundation stallion

for a fee of $3,300.

Ryan passes up Orr opportunity with MareeNick Ryan has avoided the temptation of

running Regardsmaree (So You Think) in the

C F Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and will instead

line the four-year-old up in the $125,000 The

Big Screen Company Handicap (1400m) at

Caulfield. Regardsmaree has won two of his last

three starts, including an impressive victory in

a Benchmark 70 at Caulfield on Australia Day.

"He has come through the last run super," Ryan

told Racing.com. "I feel in that short time he

has trained on even better and I am expecting

a strong showing on Saturday. We almost had a

throw at the stumps in the Orr Stakes. There are

seven horses first-up and it was very tempting

to have a go with a fit horse on rain-affected

ground. But the way the other race came up it

was too good to pass up."

Gollan keen on IngearTony Gollan believes he has found the right trip

for talented mare Ingear (Dissident), who lines

up in the 1200-metre Benchmark 72 at Eagle

Farm today. Last campaign, Gollan started

Ingear four times in races from 1300 metres to

a mile and came up empty-handed on each

occasion. Rather than test the four-year-old's

stamina reserves this preparation, Gollan is

content to keep Ingear in her comfort zone

in short-course sprints. "I tried to get her out

to 1300 metres and longer races but there's

probably no need to go further than 1200 metres

with her," Gollan said. “The 1200 metres is her

right distance at the moment and this race sets

up really well for her.” Ingear made a successful

return to racing in a 1000-metre contest at Eagle

Farm on January 21. "The step up from 1000

metres is positive and she's a lovely filly with

a good action," Gollan added. "When she won

first-up she was the only horse to lead and win

that day and she was also the only one to win on

the inside part of the track."

Neufbosc out of Carolyn Cup

Perth Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) winner Neufbosc

(Mastercraftsman) will miss today’s Carlyon

Cup (Gr 3, 1600m) due to a foot abscess. The

Neville Parnham-trained six-year-old will

likely return at Flemington next Saturday in

preparation for the All-Star Mile (1600m) on

March 13. “Unfortunately he’s come up with

a bit of a problem overnight and he won’t

be running,” Parnham told TABradio. “He

should come good in the matter of a day or

two hopefully but there’s a little bit of work

to do there. Hopefully, we will be able to get

him around next week. I was going to go from

this race to either the 1800-metre Peter Young

Stakes or the same day there was the Prelude

for the Mornington Cup. There is a 1400-metre

(race) next Saturday but I’m not sure what

weight he would get in it. There’s always an

option on the east coast.”

No autumn campaign for Sneaky FiveCiaron Maher and David Eustace have

scratched Sneaky Five (Fastnet Rock) from

today’s $2 million Inglis Millennium (RL,

1100m) and will instead save her for the spring.

The unbeaten filly was last seen winning the

Golden Gift in November but the stable are

opting to take a cautious approach with the

two-year-old. "It's a busy period for a two-year-

old, a lot of them are able to run once during

the spring and prepare for the autumn, whereas

she's had two runs on wet ground, only had the

chance to have a short turnaround and try and

be right for the very early autumn," Eustace told

Racing.com. "It makes it tight for a two-year-old

and it's not easy.” She will likely return in the

spring and be campaigned for the Thousand

Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

Lloyd set for quick returnMaddy Lloyd is set to return to riding

sooner than anticipated after escaping

serious injury following her fall at Kilmore

on Thursday. Lloyd, who currently leads

the Victorian apprentice premiership on

43 winners for the season ahead of Will

Price on 42, was taken to hospital after

falling from Rokatta (Kuroshio), but she

has been cleared of any fractures. "I'm

really lucky that there aren’t any breaks,

it definitely could have been a lot worse

after one of the horses stood on my hand

when I hit the ground," Lloyd told Racing.

com. "It's very swollen and there's cuts on

it but I'm hopeful of being back riding by

next Wednesday. I have to speak to Dr Gary

Zimmerman on Tuesday and he says if I can

clench my hand into a fist by then I should

be good to go."

Grylls suspended for positive urine testJockey Bridget Grylls has received a four-

month suspension from race riding after testing

positive to a banned substance in a urine test

last month. Grylls pleaded guilty to the charge,

with the positive sample being obtained from a

test conducted at Pakenham on January 5. She

will be suspended until May 20, and prior to

resuming handling horses or riding trackwork,

she must provide a sample that is free of any

banned substance.

Stryker to take up residence at PlatinumPlatinum Thoroughbreds have announced

Group 3 winner Stryker (Fastnet Rock) will

return to Victoria. Winner of the BTC Classic

(Gr 1, 1300m) in 2010, Stryker was retired to

stud later that year and has spent his last three

years serving small books in Wakool, New

South Wales. After noticing Stryker was not

getting the support worthy of a horse of his

class, Platinum's Rene Hoefchen and Sarah

Pfeiffer decided to bring him back to Victoria.

"We thought bringing Stryker back to a more

accessible location in Victoria could see his

books once again grow to a level you'd expect

for a stallion like him," they said. "And we think

he is a great addition to our stallion roster,

standing alongside Scorpz who is a great fit

for many of our mares but not all of them ...

and Stryker nicely fills the gap in our breeding

program." Stryker has produced 146 winners

from 284 runners, including Group 1 winner

Rangipo.

McLean disqualified for EPO useTrainer Jarrod McLean has been disqualified

from training for three years after being found

guilty of using EPO on Cats Fun (Catbird)

and for being in possession of EPO. McLean

pleaded guilty to the two charges in a

Victorian Racing Tribunal hearing yesterday,

while two other charges he was facing were

dropped. McLean administered EPO to

Cats Fun at some time between July 1, 2009

to December 17, 2013 and July 18, 2014 to

October 27, 2014. Police carried out a warrant

on McLean’s property in January 2019 and

discovered syringes containing EPO. McLean

was disqualified for three years on the

administration charge and two years for the

possession charge, with the judges ordering

the two penalties to be served concurrently.

ACCC on board for Tabcorp demergerAustralia's competition watchdog, the

Australian Competition and Consumer

Commission (ACCC), has expressed interest in

the potential break-up of gaming giant Tabcorp

with the possibility of a public review should

a deal eventuate. As reported in the Sydney

Morning Herald, it's believed that a number

of parties are interested in acquiring Tabcorp's

wagering assets. On Tuesday, Tabcorp

confirmed it had been approached about

potential arrangements to split its wagering

business from its lucrative lottery arm. British

gambling company Entain, which owns

Ladbrokes, confirmed this week that it has

made a non-binding indicative offer to acquire

Tabcorp's wagering arm and related media

business which analysts have valued at about

$3 billion. Racing NSW chief Peter V'Landys

said any potential deal to buy Tabcorp's

wagering assets would require the approval of

the various Australian racing bodies. Tabcorp's

exclusive Victorian license expires in 2024.

Cranbourne trial changesCranbourne’s trials on Monday will be conducted

on the northern track rather than the outside

track, which has not recovered from a recent

renovation due to adverse weather. The northern

track, which only has capacity to conduct trials

over 800 metres, will host heats for two-year-old

colts, geldings and fillies, three-year-old colts,

geldings and fillies, a Class 3 Open trial and a

maiden Class 2 heat. To accommodate the longer

distance horses, a new set of 1100-metre trials

have been set up at Werribee next Tuesday.

The final results for last month’s New Zealand

Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale are now

available to view. Over five days of trading

at Karaka 2021, 647 yearlings were sold for

an aggregate of NZ$60,996,500, while the

combined average and median increased

on previous years, reaching NZ$94,276 and

NZ$62,500 respectively. The clearance rate

settled at a recent record of 82 per cent. Full

National Weanling Sale to be hosted at KarakaFollowing the successful first running of a

dedicated weanling-only sale held last year,

New Zealand Bloodstock will conduct a live

sale at the Karaka Sales Centre for the 2021

edition of the National Weanling Sale, to be

Andrew Seabrook is confident the physical

weanling sale will provide a great opportunity

for domestic buyers to inspect and bid on

horses in one centralised location. “Given the

unlikely chance of New Zealand pinhookers

being able to travel to Australia to buy, I’m

optimistic that the weanlings that are offered

here will be well sought after,” said Seabrook.

Entries for the National Weanling Sale will open

from Tuesday, February 9 via the NZB portal,

with the last date to enter on Friday, March 5.

Kennedy confident Ray’s In CommandTrainer Terry Kennedy will be represented by

several runners on his home track at Wingatui

today, including White Robe Lodge Weight For

Age (Gr 3, 1600m) contender Ray’s In Command

(Raise The Flag). A winner of three of his last

four starts, the five-year-old arrives off the back

of a two-and-three-quarter-length win in open

company last time out, and steps up to stakes

grade for the first time today. “He’s a pretty good

galloper. He couldn’t have won any easier the

other day,” Kennedy said. “No doubt Gallant

Boy’s a good horse but our guy is going through

the grades and hasn’t done anything wrong and I

feel he’s improved since his run two weeks ago. I

think he’s going to be hard to beat.”

Lily steps out on Oaks pathTrainers Stephen Autridge and Kris Shailer are

hoping today’s Oaks’ Prelude (Listed, 1800m) at

New Plymouth can prove a launch pad for blue-

blood filly Lily’s Lady (Contributer) to emerge

as a serious New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m)

contender. After four starts the sister to dual

Group 1 winner Shamrocker remains a maiden,

however she is Group 2-placed after running

second to stablemate Needle And Thread

(Makfi) in the Royal Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) on

New Year’s Day. “I’ve tried to pick the easiest

race to target without going to a maiden

race,” Autridge said. “We believe Lily’s Lady is

improving with every run and she worked really

well on Tuesday. Back to 1800 metres around

Taranaki is a question mark but it is the path

we have taken. We will be riding her back. We

are getting ready for a 2400-metre race (New

Zealand Oaks). Once they get up over ground

you don’t want them too keen and providing

she is running home over the 1800 metres, you

are always a chance.”

Autridge threads Needle route to OaksCo-trainer Stephen Autridge also outlined

plans for four-and-a-half-length Royal Stakes

winner Needle And Thread, who will head

to the Fillies Classic (Gr 2, 2000m) at Te Rapa

next week in the lead up to the New Zealand

Oaks on March 20. “Needle And Thread will go

to Te Rapa next week for the David and Karyn

Ellis Fillies Classic,” said Autridge. “She looks

great and is going well. She is the number one

seed at the moment and she won easily over

2000 metres, so you would think 2400 metres

isn’t too frightening. She is an on-speed horse

that probably over-raced a little bit at Ellerslie.

Those are always question marks in the back of

your mind, but she has got the class.”

James looks for big run from Concert HallTrainer Roger James, who farewelled former

stable star Silent Achiever (O’Reilly) this

week, is looking for a big performance from

his first Group 1 winner since the great mare,

Concert Hall (Savabeel), in today’s Taranaki

Cup (Gr 3, 1800m) at New Plymouth. “Make

no mistake, she’s no Silent Achiever but she

is a good mare in her own right,” James said.

“It’s taken her till six to fully mature and her

formline is something we’re proud of. She’s in

tremendous order and we’re looking forward

to the race. The 1800 metres is ideal and set

weights and penalties, like with Melody Belle

last week, suits her so well.” The winner of the

Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m) at Ellerslie on

Boxing Day, Concert Hall could be aimed at the

Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington on

March 6. “From this, all going well she can go

to the Australian Cup but she’s got to show she

warrants that trip,” James said. The handler also

saddles up stablemate Sheriff (High Chaparral)

for the New Plymouth feature. “It’s been a long

time since he’s won but he’s never dodged good

races nor been far away. On his work, he can

run a competitive race,” added James.

and career, as he embarks, along with partner

Rosa Diesveld, on a new venture conducting

the breaking-in and pre-training of horses

under the banner of Kaizen Horsemanship.

“It’s a Japanese word that means to

continuously improve, we thought that was a

good name,” said Allan.

Born in South Africa, Allan first started

working with horses after moving to Australia

in 2011, working on a farm and riding out the

horses on a daily basis. It was a lifestyle he fell in

love with and, from his picturesque Kanangra

base, he has started out with the education of

young horses.

“I started working with horses in Australia,”

said Allan. “I started working on a farm, riding

horses for the owner and I got addicted to

the lifestyle, being out in the country and so I

worked there for a while and then went to work

in polo horses for five years.

“I progressed to break in all their horses,

before I then worked with another breaker for a

couple of years, however when he went to work

as manager for Corumbene Stud, I’ve started

taking over some of that business and it started

from there really.”

His work with a variety of different equine

athletes, he says, stands him in good stead for

the daily challenges of breaking in a young

racehorse.

“My experience of breaking-in polo ponies

is invaluable,” said Allan. “You have to get them

pretty broken come the end of it, following

a ball around and running alongside other

horses, which racehorses need to learn as well.

“No matter what discipline the horse is

doing I try to make the breaking-in process

enjoyable, keeping the horses happy

throughout the process. The horses only get one

start in life and the habits and behaviours that

are formed early on are really important.”

From his base in Kanangra, a property

Allan describes as having ‘fantastic facilities’,

he hopes Kaizen Horsemanship can develop

into bigger and better things, embodying the

philosophy of the business’s acquired name

and his hands-on method of educating the

young horses.

“It’s a beautiful property with fantastic

facilities,” said Allan. “There’s an indoor round

yard and an arena. We’ve got a big paddock, put

a track in and it’s fully equipped with practice

barriers and it’s in a pretty good spot too.

“People spend a good amount of money on

these horses and the facilities we’ve got here

ensure the ultimate safety for the horse and give

them the best start in life. We’ve got beautiful

barns with rubber floorings and rubber walls.

It’s a good facility from top to bottom, you

couldn’t get much better.

“I like to have my hands on everything.

So we’ll stick to our numbers to maintain our

quality.

“I do everything within the yard and I ride

all the horses. I think people like to know who

are riding their horses. You’ll know if you send

a horse to me that I’m the one sat on top of it

everyday and I’ve done all the work on it. I quite

like that aspect.”

Since starting up at the end of last year,

the fledgling operation is already beginning to

taste the first signs of success, with a string of

winners in recent weeks that were broken in

at the property, including the Tracey Bartley-

trained Barossa Rosa (Adelaide), a gutsy winner

at Canterbury on January 8.

“We’ve had quite a few wins over the last

few weeks with horses that we’ve broken in.

Greenheart stands out. He’s an All Too Hard

colt trained by David Atkins. I really like him

from when I worked with him. I just thought

‘wow, this horse is an athlete’. He moves around

the ring like a cat, so that was awesome to see

him win as I thought a lot of him.

“And then Barossa Rosa, she’s been winning

some decent races. She belongs to one of our

very good clients so it was fantastic to get a win

for them.”

Currently working on the ground at the

Inglis Classic Sale, Brett is welcoming new

clients with purchases out the Sydney auction

and beyond.

“We’re at the Classic Sale and have been

pretty busy, so we’re more than happy to talk

to potential interested clients in Barn F, with

Kanangra.

The greatest dynasty to have formed

in the breeding of the Australian

racehorse has come via the sire

line of the formidable Danehill

(Danzig). Since first shuttling in 1990, the

stallion has exerted more influence on the

Australian thoroughbred population than

any other, with his sire-sons now totalling 114

and more than 600 individual stakes winners

produced between them.

Yet, while through Redoute’s Choice

(Danehill), Exceed And Excel (Danehill) and

grandsons Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and

Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice), the

hegemonic dynasty has exerted its dominance,

a challenger has started to blossom.

Invincible Spirit, the Group 1-winning son

of Green Desert (Danzig), who first arrived on

Australian shores in 2003, spent four seasons

shuttling to Chatswood Stud in Victoria from

the Irish National Stud. The Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 6f)

winner covered a limited book of mares at a fee

of $11,000 and, after achieving limited success

with eight stakes winners bred in Australia, is

perhaps the unlikely catalyst for a new dynasty

to emerge.

“I think Green Desert has taken over from

Danehill a little bit over here,” proclaimed

Harry Mitchell, director of Yarraman Park,

home to Invincible Spirit’s influential sire-son,

I Am Invincible.

A bold statement that’s not without

foundation. Although never shuttling to

these shores as a stallion, Green Desert has,

through his grandson and Yarraman Park’s sire-

sensation I Am Invincible, played the patriarch

in a growing dynasty that is challenging the

status quo.

Furthermore, it’s a dynasty borne out of the

fertile sale grounds of the Inglis Classic Yearling

Sale, with four graduates from the sire line now

undertaking stud duties.

“The Classic is a proper sort of sale,” said

Mitchell. “For both buyer and vendor. It’s where

all the trainers need to go.

“It’s been an amazing sale over a long

period of time. You’ve got to sift through a few

to find the gems, but they’re always there.”

Edmonds out of the 2006 Inglis

Classic Sale for $62,500, Group

3 winner I Am Invincible went

on to become the leading first season sire at

the 2013 Inglis Classic Sale, before asserting

his dominance as the leading sire by aggregate

at the Inglis Classic from 2014 to 2017. The

$4,015,000 his yearlings grossed in 2017

amounted to more than twice his nearest rival

and more than 11 per cent of the total revenue

for the sale.

I Am Invincible now stands as the most

expensive sire in the land, with his 2020 fee

of $209,000 19 times higher than his opening

figure.

However, Mitchell admits it was a stroke

of fortune that I Am Invincible emerged as the

prevalent sire he is today.

“He was a bit of a fluke, really,” said Mitchell

of their flagship sire. “Because he was just the

most handsome horse and incredibly fast, but

he didn’t win the Group 1 on the racetrack. He

just worked.”

Although possessing searing speed and

dashing good looks, his failure to achieve

further success on the racetrack resulted in an

opening fee of just $11,000, the same as his sire

Invincible Spirit.

soaring to the same heights as his northern

hemisphere accolades, where he has sired

the likes of Kingman, Magna Grecia and

Shalaa, as well as claiming the leading first

season sire mantle in Europe, prompting Irish

National Stud to declare him ‘too valuable’ to

shuttle, Mitchell contends that his southern

hemisphere achievements have been severely

understated.

“Invincible Spirit actually didn’t do a bad

job with what he covered in just the four seasons

he was here for,” said Mitchell. “He probably

covered 50 mares in his first year. I remember

a filly called Yosei, who’s dam would’ve been

worth about $500 and she was about as high as

my kitchen table, but she won three Group 1s.

He never got a start here.”

By definition, a dynasty prerequisites

an heir to the patriarch and, in addition to

I Am Invincible, among the gems to have

been uncovered at the Inglis Classic Sale are

his Group 1-winning sons-turned-stallions

Brazen Beau and fellow Yarraman Park resident

Hellbent, while the Gai Waterhouse-trained

Group 2 winner Santos is another Classic

graduate to have found a home at stud.

A $70,000 Inglis Classic purchase for

syndicators OnTrack Thoroughbreds from I

Am Invincible’s first crop of yearlings in 2013,

Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner

Brazen Beau followed in his father’s shadow in

his early exploits at stud, becoming the leading

first season sire at the Inglis Classic in 2018 and

topping the sale by average in 2019 thanks in

large to two record-breaking colts selling for

$550,000 and $480,000.

His on-track results have only served to

bolster his credentials. The Darley resident has

sired ten stakes winners from his first three

crops of racing age, including recent Karaka

Million (Listed 1200m) winner On The Bubbles

and Blue Diamond Preview (Listed 1000m)

winner General Beau. Furthermore, through

emphatic Golden Gift (1100m) winner and

Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1200m) runner-up Tassort,

Brazen Beau is represented by a first stallion

from his first crop as stud masters clamour for

a slice of the Green Desert bloodline.

And then there’s Hellbent. Bought for

$90,000 at the Inglis Classic Sale in 2014,

Yarraman Park had seen enough after his

impressive victory in the Inglis Dash (1100m) at

Flemington and, despite having not yet won a

stakes race, made their move for the three-year-

old as a potential future stallion.

A Group 1 victory later, and Hellbent is the

most prominent first season sire at this year’s

Inglis Classic Sale, with 34 yearlings catalogued,

with Mitchell hoping he can follow in the

success of his sire I Am Invincible and Brazen

Beau in becoming the leading first season sire

at the sale.

“It’s an incredibly important sale for these

stallions starting out,” he said. “We’re launching

Hellbent this year and obviously he sold very

well at Magic Millions, but we need to follow

that up, and I think his yearlings will sell very

well at the Classic Sale as well.”

Hellbent’s similarities to his sire are

striking, not least in his own appearance but in

the appearance of his offspring, and Mitchell

attributes his high numbers in the sale as a

reflection of the outstanding type the stallion is

producing.

“The interesting thing about Hellbent is that

he’s bay dominant, like his father, and he stamps

them all the same. I think it’s so important with

that sire line,” he said.

“The number of yearlings he’s got in this

sale and also at the Magic Millions, it just shows

he’s throwing a lot of nice, athletic horses. I

think the buyers will like a lot of them at the

Classic.”

In signs of encouragement, Hellbent led

the first season sire charts by aggregate sales at

January’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling

Sale, with a colt out of Quezette Stakes (Gr 3,

1100m) runner-up Jalan Jalan (Foreplay) selling

for $500,000.

But of greater significance to the

experienced stud master, is the quality of trainer

they will be residing in, with three Hellbent

yearlings heading to the Ciaron Maher stable,

while Chris Waller and Peter & Paul Snowden

will be among the other handlers to welcome a

Hellbent to their string.

“What we try to do is get them in the best

homes we possibly can,” said Mitchell. “And I

know you can’t pick who buys your horses but

if you go to those good sales, you hope the good

trainers are there and that they find the good

ones and that it all works out.

“It filled me with confidence in the Magic

Millions with who bought them. These are some

of the best judges and they had more Hellbents

on their shortlist than any other stallion.

“We were half a million for a filly and 300

for a filly and 260 for a colt, this is a horse at 25

g ra n d , it’s a pretty good return.”

A product of I Am Invincible’s success, both on the track and in

the sales ring, and in a further requirement of a lasting dynasty, is the

proliferation of Green Desert blood finding its way onto the rosters of

studs across the country, to the extent there are now 18 descendants of

Green Desert standing at stud in Australia, 16 of them taking up stud

duties since 2017, while five of these are shuttle stallions.

“I Am Invincible has not only prompted several shuttle stallions from the

Invincible Spirit sire line to come over and stand here given his success, but he’s

also encouraged a lot of stud masters to stand these cheap stallions in the hope

that they turn into an I Am Invincible,” said Mitchell.

“A lot of his stallions in the first instance are standing at fairly cheapish

fees. But in the next few years you’ll see a proper one who stands for an

awful lot of money.”

Looking ahead to this year’s Inglis Classic Sale and Mitchell picks

out two of his top lots to keep an eye out for, with Lot 563, a Hellbent colt

out of Canny Lad (Bletchingly) mare Defrock and Lot 183, a filly out of

Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock) two-year-old winner Najmaat.

“The best colt is the half brother to Deprive out of Defrock,” said Mitchell.

“Average size, beautiful mover. And the pick of the fillies is out of a mare called

Najmaat. A Hinchinbrook mare who was quite a smart two-year-old. She’s again

not overly big, but she’s got a great backside and great action. They’d be the two

picks for me from our draft.

“If one thing’s for certain, with Hellbent, we’ll certainly be the talking

horse of the first season sires I think.”

As far as dynasties go, we’ve been talking about Danehill for 30 years.

Analysis: The progressive Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained

staying colt Explosive Jack advanced from winning a Swan Hill Maiden

(1600m) on November 25 when racing on debut to recording a stakes

victory here, his third win from four starts. He settled nicely for John

Allen back in tenth place, improved passing the 600m, fanned deep

nearing the turn, stormed to the front at the 200m and then drew away to

score easily in a solid staying performance. The Mick Price and Michael

Kent Jnr-trained Alloway had a nice trip in fourth place on the rails,

moved up well nearing the turn, challenged at the 200m and then battled

on well for second, having no chance with the winner. The favourite

Swoop Dog, recent winner of the Tasmanian Guineas (Listed, 1600m)

and the Launceston Guineas (Listed, 2100m), settled back in fifth place,

improved nicely coming to the turn but just battled in the home straight

for third after appearing to have had every chance with Brandum Bay

holding on for fourth after being handy all the way. [KB]

Stud are one of the vendors

appearing on this year’s Inglis

Classic Yearling Sale catalogue

for the first time, with four of their horses set to

go through the ring at Riverside Stables.

Established in March 2019, Cannon Hayes

Stud is located just outside Scone in the sought-

after Hunter Valley region of New South Wales

and was the brainchild of Morissey, who has

long desired to set up his own operation.

Born in Ireland, Morissey moved over to

Australia on a scholarship and subsequently

spent 18 years at Arrowfield Stud, operating as

their stud manager for the final five years of his

time at the world-renowned operation.

But a desire to have a crack at running

his own operation with his wife Lucy, a

veterinarian, led him to set up Cannon Hayes

Stud, a boutique farm named after his mother’s

estate back in County Tipperary, Ireland.

“I moved over to Australia in 2000 and

I worked for Arrowfield Stud for 18 years,

managing the place for five years,” says

Morissey.

“There came a time in my life when I just

wanted to have a go on my own. Arrowfield

were very good to me, but the next step was to

buy our own family-run place.

“We bought a small boutique farm five

minutes outside Scone and I’m here with my

wife Lucy and our two sons, Teddy and James.

We’re a young family.

“The property is 105 acres and we’re more

reliant on quality than quantity, that’s the

business structure that we have. We don’t want

lots of numbers, we probably want 40, and we

don’t want to overrun the property.

“The business plan for us is to breed them,

rear them and sell them.

“We’re really happy with the business, the

industry over here is unbelievable really.”

Cannon Hayes Stud have quickly ramped

up their operation to meet their maximise

their facilities, with Morissey adding: “When

we started off the business we had 10 foals,

now we’ve got 20 foals and next year we’ll be

represented at all the major sales.”

They have entered a five-strong draft for the

Inglis Classic Sale, with one lot withdrawn, and

the first horse of theirs to go through the ring is

Lot 333, a Headwater (Exceed And Excel) colt

out of Bernardini (A. P. Indy) mare Sozzini.

A maiden winner on the track, this colt is

Sozzini’s second living foal, with her previous

filly yet to race.

2015 Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1100m) Headwater

has proven himself to be an impressive young

sire, with Ken Russell Memorial Classic (Gr 3,

1200m) winner Wisdom Of Water among his 33

winners from 81 runners at the time of writing.

“They’re a quality bunch of horses, we’ve

got three lovely colts and we’re expecting them

to sell well,” says Morissey. “The Headwater colt

is lovely, he’s more your three-year-old type,

a classy kind of horse. He’s by a stallion that’s

doing a good job.”

Ten lots later, Cannon Hayes will be

represented by flying stallion Savabeel (Zabeel),

whose colt out of Lovetessa (O’Reilly) was the

second top-lot at Karaka 2021 last month at

NZ$720,000.

The sire of 21 top-level winners, Savabeel

has four lots at the Inglis Classic sale and

Morrissey seems particularly excited for his colt

out of O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) mare Starry (Lot

343) to go through the ring.

“The Savabeel colt is a cracking type, lovely

walker with a great temperament,” he says.

“The Savabeel-O’Reilly cross is a cross that

works, they’ve had 18 stakes winners and it’s

the best cross. If you look at Savabeel’s stats,

it’s by far the best stakes-winning cross.

“There’s probably no better time to be

selling a Savabeel, he’s had an outstanding

year. We’d be very disappointed if this horse

didn’t sell well.”

However, the pick of their bunch according

to Morissey is Lot 562, a Deep Field (Northern

Meteor) colt out of Flying Spur (Danehill) mare

De Sea Eagle.

Deep Field, who stood at Newgate for

$55,000 (inc. GST) in 2020, recently had a colt

out of Courageous Kitty (Fastnet Rock) sell

for $700,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast

Yearling Sale and Morissey is expecting this bay

colt to be popular among buyers.

“The Deep Field colt is probably the pick of

the bunch for us,” he says.

“He’s a really precocious colt, very attractive

and a great walking horse.

“The stallion needs no introduction, he’s

hot at the moment, and being out of a Flying

Spur mare, who is very good at producing

broodmares, we’d expect that horse to sell

extremely well.

“We’d like to think he would apply to the

Asian market, these colts are sought after.”

The other lot going through the ring for

Cannon Hayes is a Dundeel (High Chaparral)

filly out of Stareign (Northern Meteor) (Lot

341), while a Pierro (Lonhro) filly included in

their five-strong draft has been withdrawn.

Despite this being a strange year for the

stud to have their first yearlings at the Inglis

Classic Sale, Morissey is confident the numbers

will remain strong.
