Eligible employers will be able to receive
and pay the JobKeeper payments to various
employee categories, including, but not limited
to:
• Employees who were employed by you as employees as at March 1, 2020;
• Employees currently employed by you (including those stood down or re-hired);
• Employees who are full-time, part-time, or long-term casuals (to get the payment for
a casual employee, they must have been employed by you on a regular basis for longer
than 12 months as at March 1, 2020); and• Employees who are not in receipt of a
JobKeeper Payment from another employer.
• Special eligibility for horse business structures with no employeesPresuming the above eligibility conditions for employers and
employees are satisfied, note below how a “nominated” employee for the
following common business structures are eligible to receive JobKeeper.
• Sole traders
The proprietor will be eligible if they do not receive JobKeeper from
another source.Another reminder: for verification purposes, businesses without
employees, such as a sole trader:• will need to provide an ABN for their business;
• nominate an individual to receive the payment;
• provide that individual’s Tax File Number; and
• provide a declaration as to the recent business activity of that business.
Sole traders are easily the most common horse structures and, as
such, it is worth sharing that if you are also employed on a wage and
would like to receive JobKeeper as a sole trader, rather than through your
employer, you can nominate yourself as the “eligible business participant”
Carrazzo Consulting Pty Ltd | Chartered Accountants - www.carrazzo.com.au
under the business participation rules and give appropriate notice to the
ATO. In this scenario, your employer cannot nominate you for JobKeeper
payments.
• PartnershipsA single partner in a partnership can be nominated. This single
partner must not be receiving JobKeeper from another source.• Trusts
A single individual beneficiary of a trust can be nominated to receive
JobKeeper payments. This individual beneficiary must not be receiving
JobKeeper from another source. The beneficiaries of a trust are outlined and defined within its trust deed.
• CompaniesA single director or shareholder of a company can be nominated.
These businesses will also receive JobKeeper payments for their other
eligible employees. This single director must not be receiving JobKeeper from another
source.
These initiatives are a step forward, but
it is noted by accounting bodies, such as CPA
Australia, that they have limitations in ensuring
equitable access to JobKeeper within trust,
partnership, and company structures. They will
recommend to government that the ‘business
participant’ test be extended to all actively
engaged persons in trusts, partnerships and
companies. For more details on JobKeeper, please refer
to our recent release titled “JobKeeper subsidy
for businesses and employees” on the Carrazzo
blog at www.carrazzo.com.au.

Of all the recent government Covid-19 initiatives recently announced, it is generally thought that the JobKeeper payment for employers is only available to profitable horse businesses that have established employees. If you thought this was the case, read on, upon review of the recently announced JobKeeper legislation, I have some pleasant surprises for you.Below, I will work through the four common business structures and explain how it is possible for business owners that operate as sole traders or through trusts, partnerships and companies, to be eligible for JobKeeper even if their businesses are currently in losses and/or they aren’t being paid wages.

JobKeeper – positive updatecould benefit your horse business
JobKeeper payment – quick overviewA JobKeeper payment is a minimum payment ($1,500 per fortnight) the Government will pay to eligible businesses (defined below) to ensure they are able to keep their eligible employees (defined below) employed by them during this Covid-19 period. The first payment will be received by employers from the ATO in the
first week of May, 2020 and will be backdated to be payable from the scheme commencement of March 30, 2020. Payments under JobKeeper can be received up to September 27, 2020.• Eligible employers
All businesses who meet the turnover tests below can now register their interest with the ATO to receive the JobKeeper payment for their employees. Update to “Turnover tests” for employers All businesses (including sole traders) can now register their interest to
receive the JobKeeper payments for their employees (or themselves if sole traders) if they meet the various turnover tests. The most applicable test to the horse industry is that their turnover has been reduced by more than 30 per cent relative to a comparable period a year ago (of at least a month).
Since our original release on JobKeeper a few weeks ago, the ATO has given more details as to how to apply the “turnover test”. This is a crucial consideration for employers and is noted below.
How to calculate a fall in turnover for the first fortnight starting 30 March 2020To work out your fall in turnover, you can compare either:• GST turnover for March, 2020 with GST turnover for March, 2019• projected GST turnover for April, 2020 with GST turnover for April, 2019• projected GST turnover for the quarter starting April 2020 with GST
turnover for the quarter starting April, 2019How you choose to project your fall in turnover is not dependent on whether you report a quarterly or monthly BAS, though you can do that if it is easier.
If you work out that you qualify for the JobKeeper payments for the first fortnight because your turnover has declined by the relevant amount, you remain eligible and do not need to keep testing turnover in following months. However, you will have ongoing monthly reporting requirements. More information will be provided soon. The ATO also has the discretion to set out alternative tests that can
establish your eligibility when turnover periods are not appropriately comparable (for example, if your business has been in operation less than a year). We will provide more information soon about alternative tests.

that the farm is taking a chance with a colt who
appeared capable of achieving anything on the

“I think he’s
going to come as a little bit of a shock and a
surprise to the market that he is standing under
the Newgate banner, but he’s a horse we just felt
deserved his chance,” Slade told ANZ Bloodstock
News yesterday.
“Obviously, he raced in the Godolphin
colours and I think everyone’s first memory of the
horse is that he is that X-factor horse that was the
early favourite for the Golden Slipper. Everyone
was so excited after his debut to see where he’d
go and where he’d get to, but unfortunately, due
to injury, he was never able to fulfill the potential
that he had shown on debut.”
That debut was an electric five and a quarter
length victory in the Golden Gift (1100m) at
Rosehill in November, 2018. It was a win that saw
Tassort assume early favouritism for that season’s Golden Slipper Stakes
(Gr 1, 1200m), with form analysts rating his performance through the
roof: The Rating Bureau’s Daniel O’Sullivan declared it a “Group 1 class”
performance that was “stamped
by a sharp turn of foot, terrific late
strength and fast overall time”,
placing him in rarefied company.
Unfortunately, the colt only
raced once more, when he was
sent out as an odds-on favourite
in the Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2,
1100m) at Rosehill. Slow from the
stalls, he settled near the rear in an
evenly-run race, making ground
late into second but unable to reel
in Time To Reign (Time For War).
“We had key indicators
through this horse’s career that
told us he was elite and just
never had the chance to show it,”
Slade said. “We are big on time ratings and data. Daniel O’Sullivan from
The Ratings Bureau gave this guy a 103 on debut when he won. He was
impressive to the eye that day but when the time data came back, it said,
listen, this is as impressive a two-year-old debut that we’ve seen since the
likes of Estijaab and Extreme Choice. To be honest, at the time, we thought
we had a colt to be really concerned about on the racetrack, wearing our
Newgate cap!
“Obviously we never got to see that ability but on the back of that
performance, that debut, James McDonald came out and said he was the
real deal and James Cummings was very much of the same opinion, he
had a very high opinion of the horse. Everyone that had something to do
with him plus the time data suggested he had the ability to be that real
elite performer.
Slade continued: “At the end of the day, for all of us, our key criteria
for any young stallion standing at Newgate is that elite race performance.
Horses don’t have to win their Group 1s, but if they showed elite
performance, they generally are your best chance of becoming an
important stallion.
“I just feel you only have to look at the general sires list to see that. They are
either proper, proper Group 1 horses, or they were horses who had that ability but
didn’t get to showcase their true potential.

“They were horses of the ilk of I Am
Invincible, who had exceptional speed. Every trainer that had him would tell
you he was a Group 1-class horse, he just had his own issues with his feet.
“Not A Single Doubt was an unbelievable two-year-old, as good as we
have probably ever seen without winning his Group 1. Both of them have
turned out to be really important stallions.”
Tassort followed a very similar career trajectory to his dam Essouaira
(Exceed And Excel). She was backed into Golden Slipper favouritism in
2009 after a six-length win on debut at Moonee Valley, but at her second
start in a Listed race at Caulfield, she bucked soon after the jump and
finished down the track. She never raced again.
However, at stud, she has become a valuable commodity, producing two
Group 1 winners in Alizee (Sepoy) and Astern (Medaglia d’Oro), as well as
stakes-placed Tassort and Mogador (Lonhro), from six foals to race.
“That pedigree really stands out to us,” Slade said. “He’s by Brazen
Beau who’s doing such a great job, he’s a grandson of I Am Invincible,
and he’s also out of that great mare Essaouira who has been such an elite
producer already in her short broodmare career. She’s done it twice with
Alizee and Astern, who's to say she won’t do it again and again?
“He’s got the pedigree, he’s a good-looking horse too, he’s 15.3, square,
great-actioned horse, great jowl, he’s exactly what you’d like to see in a horse
that’s going to leave two-year-olds and then horses that can train on at three.
“Physically and commercially I think breeders are going to find him
very easy to mate to. He’s got the good looks to be a nice commercial
prospect for breeders at that fee, where there is plenty of upside.
Tassort represents a partnership between Newgate Farm and Emirates
Park Stud, with Slade saying that they are basing a breeding rights deal for
the three-year-old on a similar offer that
was given to early investors in I Am
Invincible (Invincible Spirit).
“The way we’re going to
structure his deal is going to give
him a terrific opportunity at stud,”
Slade said. “He’s a horse that was
purchased by Emirates Park from
Godolphin. We were then very
grateful to be given the opportunity to
buy into the horse with Emirates
Park and stand him at Newgate
Farm.
“We have committed 20 mares
to match Emirates Park’s 20 mares
and I’d suggest somewhere closer
to 50 good mares is closer to the
figure that he’ll reach between
our two operations. That should
give him a really good start to his
career.
“On top of that, we’re going
to do a breeding rights deal on the
horse, very similar to what was done
with the Yarraman Park boys, the
Mitchells, with I Am Invincible.
“We will essentially be selling
breeding rights to good breeders
who have been supportive of us over the years. The way they will secure their
breeding right is to send a mare in his first season at that fee and then send a
mare in his second season at that same price and then pay both service fees
per the terms and they will secure a breeding right in the horse for the long-
term upside of the young stallion.
“Hopefully, people see that as a really nice opportunity whereby, at a
very low level, they not only have the chance of commercial success in the
short-term but in the long-term they have a share of Tassort’s upside as he
goes on and proves his worth as a stallion.”
Tassort will be available to inspect next week along with Newgate’s
Inglis Chairman’s Sale draft.
“He’s a really exciting horse, I can’t wait to show him to breeders,”
Slade said. “I think we’ve really learnt that those good-looking horses
that can produce good-looking stock, they not only increase the breeder’s
short-term commercial prospects but it also helps them to get into the
right stables and gives them their chance from there on.”
Tassort is the first of Newgate’s freshman stallions to have his fee
announced for 2020, with Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Brutal
(O’Reilly) among those to be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Eight for Spill The Beans
The late Spill The Beans (Snitzel) landed his
eighth winner yesterday when Borlotti (2 c ex Kas
Nediym by Nediym) broke his maiden against
older horses on debut over 1106 metres at Grafton.
The Paul Smith-trained colt won by a length and a
half over Hashtag Viking (Arlington) with another
two-year-old, Point Of Attack (Bull Point), a
further half a length away in third. Borlotti was
purchased by Aquis Farm for $42,500 at the Magic
Millions National Weanling Sale from the draft of
Warrandale Stud. He is one of six winners out of
Kas Nediym (Nediym) and is related to Group 1
scorer Gatting (Hard Spun). A former Aquis Farm
resident, Spill The Beans died in October last year.
Vegadaze goneGroup 3 winner Vegadaze (Lope De Vega) has
been euthanised, breaking his leg when falling
over after having colic surgery on Sunday. “They
operated on him last night and that all went
well but he unfortunately broke his leg getting
up,” trainer Anthony Cummings said. “He had
a good autumn and was a promising horse so
it is obviously very disappointing for everyone
involved.” Owner-breeder Raymond Spratt
added: "He was so tough and was just a wonderful
horse. He did what you want to see from a horse.
He wanted to be at the front and he didn't want
anything to pass him. He was part of the family."
Vegadaze won five times and placed twice from 12
starts, earning close to $420,000 in prize-money.
Invincibella to be soldGroup 1-winning mare Invincibella (I Am
Invincible) is set to be sold at the Magic Millions
Broodmare Sale in July. Trained by Chris Waller
and raced by Star Thoroughbreds, the six-year-
old mare earned $3,075,103 in prize-money
from 43 starts, which included 12 wins and 12
placings. She was a $185,000 purchase at the
2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale
by Star Thoroughbreds from the Sledmere Stud
draft and was three times a winner on the rich
Magic Millions raceday, taking the first two
editions of the $1 million Magic Millions Fillies
& Mares Plate (1300m) as well as the Magic
Millions Plate (1300m) in 2018. As well as her
Group 1 win in last year’s Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1,
1400m), she also landed four Group 2s and was
placed at stakes level eight times.
Coyle with two Hawkesbury Guineas hopefulsJason Coyle will have two live chances in Saturday’s
Hawkesbury Guineas (Gr 3, 1400m), which is to
be run at Rosehill, in Mo’s Crown (Uncle Mo) and
James Carr Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) third St Covet's
Spirit (Uncle Mo). "The plan was to back the filly
up and the other horse has done well so at this
stage I think we'll more than likely accept for him
on Wednesday," Coyle said. "St Covet's Spirit was
terrific on Saturday. She has run into a filly there
that is just low flying at the moment. She took the
right improvement from her first-up run and did
everything I wanted her to do. She relaxed off a
really solid tempo and found the line strongly. It was
a positive performance. Looking at the program I've
always had that back-up in mind so it's good to see
her come through the weekend well."
Manolo Blahniq set for Hawkesbury Cup tiltIt has been 22 months since Manolo Blahniq
(Jimmy Choux) last raced in Sydney but
Mornington trainer Tony Noonan is looking
forward to the gelding's return to Rosehill in the
Hawkesbury Gold Cup (Gr 3, 1500m). The gelding
heads to Saturday's race after a game fourth in
the Victoria Handicap (G 3, 1400m) last Saturday
week at Caulfield. "I think the horse is in really
good form," Noonan said. "He's just been drawing
poorly which has just meant we've had to go back
in the run but he has been hitting the line well. His
Sydney form is good and he has won at Rosehill
before. I think 1500 metres looks nice for him at
this stage so we're looking forward to it.”
Lindelani to follow mum’s lead in St LegerTrainer Michael Trotter hopes Lindelani
(Turffontein) can replicate the deeds of her dam
with success in the VRC St Leger (Listed, 2800m) at
Flemington on Saturday. Lindelani's dam Inkster
(Umatilla) won the event in a dead-heat with
Moment In Time (Archway) in 2008. Trotter began
thinking of Saturday's race after the filly scored at
Werribee in December before she confirmed those
aspirations with a last-start second at Sandown.
"She got stuck in an awkward spot last time and
got shuffled back which probably cost her the race
in the end," Trotter said. “She was finding the line
really nicely at the end, especially her last 100 metres
which was really impressive. We can then look to
Adelaide after Saturday, the South Australian Fillies
Classic which is over 2500 metres, three weeks after
the St Leger."

Vega One to begin Stradbroke build-upTwo-time stakes-winner Vega One (Lope de
Vega) will take his first step towards a long-
held date with the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr
1, 1400m) when he runs in Saturday's Open
Handicap (1000m) at the Sunshine Coast. "After
he won two races in the winter as a three-year-
old I always had this year's Stradbroke in the
back of my mind for him," trainer Tony Gollan
said. "His summer campaign was designed for
him to get into the Stradbroke field and he did
that by winning The Gateway which carries
a ballot-free condition into the Stradbroke.
Provided he pleases me in the next few days he
will run at the Sunshine Coast."
Cox Plate on radar for Super SethAfter a fast-finishing fourth in the All Aged
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) to cap a luckless autumn
campaign, Anthony Freedman’s Caulfield
Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Super Seth
(Dundeel) could be aimed at the Cox Plate
(Gr 1, 2040m) in the spring. Mark Chittick of
Waikato Stud, who secured a share in the colt
to stand at their stud once retired, told Racing.
com: “On pedigree you’d be pretty confident
he would (run it out) and if he had a nice
uninterrupted spring then you could try that.
After missing that run with that temperature
that interrupted things, then he struck wet
tracks but on Saturday he had some fine days
going in and on top of the track, he certainly
showed what his biggest attribute was in the
straight. It was just a shame he missed the
start and ruined his chances. He has gone out
to a spelling farm in NSW to keep him ticking
over.”
Te Akau to aim five at Cox PlateMeanwhile, Te Akau Stud principal David
Ellis is planning his team’s spring assault with
five of their horses set to target the Cox Plate.
“We will be nominating five horses for the Cox
Plate – Prise De Fer, Avantage, Melody Belle,
Probabeel, and Te Akau Shark,” Ellis said. “We
are looking at what will be the best way to
get our horses to that race and the most cost-
effective for our owners. We are looking at all
options, but we are going to have a nice team to
race in Melbourne in the spring.” Te Akau were
represented by dual Group 1 winner Te Akau
Shark (Rip Van Winkle) in last year’s edition of
the prestigious race, with the chestnut finishing
a gallant third.
Streets Of Avalon to chase spring riches
With the reshaping of the Brisbane winter
carnival, Shane Nichols has had to change
plans with Group 1 winner Streets Of Avalon
(Magnus) and will now target the gelding at
the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in
the spring. "We got messed around with the
Brisbane carnival," Nichols said. "It was off,
then it's on again and then we didn't know
whether Victorian horses could go there. So
he'll get two months off and be targeted solely
at the Sir Rupert Clarke in the spring. He'll tee
off in the Bletchingly and probably run in the
Memsie Stakes on the way through, but the Sir
Rupert Clarke will be the main focus."
Positive swab from Maher, Eustace runnerA horse trained by Ciaron Maher and David
Eustace has returned a positive swab to a
prohibited substance. A blood sample taken
from Piccatric (Fastnet Rock) after the filly
won a maiden at Sale on February 28 showed
the presence of Frusemide, a diuretic also
marketed as Lasix. Stewards told Maher and
Eustace of the irregularity on March 31 ahead
of confirmation of analysis of the B sample
yesterday. The trainers were fined $2000 on
Saturday following an inquiry into the use of
shockwave therapy given to Stardayz (Zoustar)
inside the seven-day cut-off period before she
raced at Flemington in March.
Valley to explore night Cox PlateHaving considered abandoning the Cox Plate
this year, Moonee Valley Racing Club chief
executive Michael Browell said they are now
exploring whether it can be run under lights. "We
have had many conversations about a night Cox
Plate (before)," Browell told RSN927. "This year
being the 100th and looking at doing something
differently, maybe it is worthy of consideration.
Wagering will need to be considered as we need
complementary product around the country to
make sure we can maximise wagering turnover
on the day. We'll have conversations with our
broadcast partners, racing.com and Channel
Seven, because it could be a made for television
event. If it was to be run at night, let's say the Cox
Plate was run at 8.30 in prime time, you could
certainly put a different spin on the presentation
to lounge rooms around the country."
Moor won’t return to SingaporeDaniel Moor will return to Australia from a two-
year riding stint in Singapore and will not be
returning. “It’s going to be a permanent move.
It’s something I’ve discussed at length with my
wife and our children,” Moor told Racing.com.
“We’ve had a fantastic two years in Singapore
and we’ve made a lot of great friends over there
and had a great experience. But we’re ready
to come back now. I’ve touched base with
everyone I used to ride for back home here. I
will put my head down and bum up and work
everywhere, going everywhere to get my name
back out there and get back into the loop. It’s
very competitive but I’m not afraid of hard
work and it’s actually a bit of a challenge and
something to spur me on.”
Injured Tamworth trackwork rider transferred to SydneyA track rider was yesterday injured after being
dislodged from her mount on the way to the
barriers for a jump out at Tamworth. The female
rider sustained injuries to her hip and upper leg
and was taken to Tamworth Hospital. She was
later transferred to Royal North Shore Hospital
and was found to have an L5 lumbar fracture
that will be treated with a brace.

V’landys prevails in NRL power struggleCalls are growing for Racing NSW chief
executive Peter V’landys to appoint himself
as executive chairman of the National Rugby
League (NRL) after the NRL’s chief Todd
Greenberg was given his marching orders last
night. V’landys has stamped himself as the
leader of rugby league in his role as Australian
Rugby League Commission (ARLC) chairman
through the coronavirus crisis. While V’landys
suggested he had no interest in an executive
chairman role, any added responsibility would
likely see the Racing
NSW supremo
depart racing for
rugby league.
Channel Nine’s
Andrew Webster
last night quoted
V’landys as saying
earlier this year that
the supremo would
choose between
rugby league and racing within a year, with his
contract to expire at year’s end.

Level Four lockdown extended for a weekNew Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern
yesterday announced that the country would
extend Level Four lockdown restrictions
for another week, moving to Level Three
restrictions at 11:59pm next Monday, April 27.
The move to Level Three next week will allow
training centres to reopen once government
approval is given, with a provisional restart date
for racing of July 1.
Te Akau looking towards new season at homePrincipal David Ellis said his team at Te
Akau Stud are looking forward to racing
returning in New Zealand in the new
season and his horses are thriving in their
paddocks. “Things have been really good,
we have had plenty of rain and the farm
looks amazing,” Ellis said. “Every paddock
on the farm is full of horses and they are
thriving. Most of our horses are out spelling
at this time of the year anyway. We won’t
have much to race until August 1.”

Blinkers for Thanks Forever in Chairman’s SprintThanks Forever (Duporth) worked in first-
time blinkers at Sha Tin yesterday morning
and trainer John Moore is pinning his hopes
on the headgear drawing out the little extra
required to turn the talented gelding into a
Group 1 winner. The consistent four-year-old
has worn cheek pieces in his last 13 races but
will switch to blinkers when he lines up in the
HK$18 million Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1,
1200m) at Sha Tin on FWD Champions Day
this Sunday. “I think he’s ready to win one
of these Group 1 races,” Moore said. “If the
favourites aren’t right on their game, he’ll be
right there. And the blinkers just might do the
trick.”
Yiu’s looking to Voyage Warrior for a Group 1 toppingRicky Yiu is enjoying his best season ever in terms
of his numerical success and on Sunday at Sha
Tin he will attempt to cap it with a Group 1 win.
Voyage Warrior (Declaration Of War) stunned the
big guns with a front-running victory in the Sprint
Cup (Gr 2, 1200m) earlier this month and the
latest hope to rise from Yiu’s nursery of talented
sprinter-milers will attempt to prove that was no
fluke with a follow up in the Chairman’s Sprint
Prize. “He’s an improving young horse and I still
can’t see the bottom of him yet – there’s a lot still
to find out. He’ll do well again over 1200 metres
on the big day,” Yiu said.

Grimthorpe airs Classic worriesConsiderable uncertainty surrounding the
running of the British Classics has connections
concerned about preparations for their three-
year-olds. Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager for
Juddmonte principal Khalid Abdullah, says it is still
a juggling act, even with a clearer path in recent
days: "The problem for all trainers at the moment
is that they're training towards an unknown. If the
first Classics happen in June is that definitely going
to be early in the month, or will it be mid-June
or later? That can make a considerable amount
of difference, so there's no real way to plan a
campaign for any of these horses as you don't know
when anything's going to be." Abdullah has Group
1 winners Siskin (First Defence) and Quadrilateral
(Frankel) bound for the Classics.

Zousain SPORTPIX
| 12 |
Zousain, the first ever foal from
Widden Stud’s leading young
stallion Zoustar (Northern Meteor),
will join his sire on the farm’s
roster after the four-year-old’s retirement was
announced yesterday.
A Group 2-winning juvenile, taking
the Champagne Classic (Gr 2, 1200m) at
Doomben before finishing second to The
Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) in the J J
Atkins (Gr 1, 1600m), Zousain’s two-year-old
record is reminiscent of his sire, with Zoustar
winning the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2,
1400m) before also finishing runner-up in the
J J Atkins.
Widden Stud bought into the Qatar Racing-
owned Zousain before he resumed at three and
watched on as the colt came so close to breaking
through for that elusive Group 1 win during
his spring campaign, finishing a long head
behind The Autumn Sun in the Golden Rose
(Gr 1, 1400m) and the same margin behind
Sunlight (Zoustar) in the Coolmore Stud Stakes
(registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m).
“Both were trained by Chris Waller and his
race record mirrors that of his own sire,” Widden
Stud principal Antony
Thompson told ANZ
Bloodstock News
yesterday. “They had
identical records at
two and he was so
close to that Group
1 win, just a long
head off the winner
in the Coolmore
and Golden Rose
at three to Sunlight
and The Autumn Sun
respectively. That was
agonising.”
He returned with a good run to begin his
autumn three-year-old campaign, flashing
home for second in the Zeditave Stakes (Gr
3, 1200m), but he only graced the racetrack
three more times throughout 2019, finishing
unplaced on each occasion.
After switching to the Anthony Freedman
stable for an autumn campaign, he trialled
once at Cranbourne but was retired without
stepping out for his new yard.
For Thompson, Zousain was on his watch
list long before any ownership deal was
completed, as something of a carbon copy of
his sire. Offered by Edinglassie Stud at the 2017
Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, he
was purchased for $400,000 to the bid of David
Redvers and Mulcaster Bloodstock.
“He is a colt that has always been on our
radar,” Thompson said. “He was a standout
yearling and when David Redvers purchased
him with Guy Mulcaster and Chris Waller
he was a colt we followed very closely. He is
physically an outstanding type very much in
the mould of Zoustar and Northern Meteor
with that same remarkable calm temperament.”
Fees for Zousain and the rest of the Widden
Stud roster will be announced in the coming
weeks.

A runaway win by Hostwin Saturn
(Stratum) in Saturday’s Class
2 & 3 Handicap (1800m) has
elevated the four-year-old to
clear cut favoritism for the Macau Derby
(Listed, 1800m), set for July 19.
Prepared by first-season trainer Nick Moore,
son of Macau’s former champion trainer Gary,
Hostwin Saturn simply destroyed his opponents
in a brilliant display of speed and stamina under
French rider J B Hamel, winning easily over the
Derby track and trip in a slick 1:47.5. The Derby
record is 1:47 flat, held jointly by The Alfonso
(Magnus) and Sacred Capital (O’Reilly).
For a first season trainer to win Macau’s
greatest race, the Derby, would be an
outstanding achievement, however it is a plan
that Nick Moore set in motion at the beginning
of the season.
“I’ve always had this feeling that he was
going to turn into a Derby prospect. I took him
to the races at Hawkesbury back in August
when I was working for Dad. He ran a big race
that day over 1800 metres only beaten three-
quarters of a length,” Moore said.
“He’s the perfect horse for Macau, I threw
everything at him and he just kept muscling up
and never leaves an oat.”
Hostwin Saturn was a $240,000 purchase at
the 2017 Magic Millions 2YOs In Training Sale
by owner Jason Tam.
“I fell in love with the horse because he
reminded me of Viva Pronto with the star on
his forehead. Viva Pronto was one of Dad’s
outstanding horses; he even won a Group 3 in
Hong Kong,” Moore said. “He was doing a lot
wrong in his races in Australia by overracing. J B
told me, ‘If I take him to the front, he will switch
off and prick his ears,’ and he did just that.”
“It would be an amazing story if I can win
the Derby for Mr Tam. He’s been such a big
supporter and I wouldn’t be here today if it
wasn’t for him getting me up and going.”
Tam also has another rising star that could
make the Derby cut in Hostwin Epanoui (More
Than Ready) who overcame difficulties to score
an impressive victory on Friday night in the
Class 2 & 3 (1500m) on turf.
Prepared by Tony Fung and ridden by
apprentice Eric Cheung, Hostwin Epanoui
walked out of the gates giving the leaders a good
six lengths start. Showing great patience, young
Cheung tacked onto the field and gradually
improved against the rail to be midfield at the
600 metres
Railing up behind race favourites Winnie
Star (Medaglia d’Oro) and Draft Camp (Dream
Ahead) rounding the turn, Hostwin Epanoui
sprinted quickly when an opening came and
raced away for an impressive win.
Hostwin Epanoui was also an expensive
purchase being knocked down to Tam and Gary
Moore for $200,000 at the 2017 Magic Millions
Gold Coast Yearling Sales.
It’s been a long hard road back for former
top jockey Peter Lao but finally, after 69 rides
since returning to the saddle last December,
he gave a perfect exhibition of front-running
riding to guide the 73-1 pop Infinite Treasure
(Captain Rio) to victory in Saturday’s Class 6
over 1500 metres.
Lao set the Rambo Tse-prepared gelding
alight from gate eight and soon took up the
running; rated perfectly, he gave a nice kick
off the corner and with Lao looking a picture
of poise and balance as he wielded the whip,
Infinite Treasure raced away for convincing
win.
Once an idol of Macau racing as an
apprentice with Darby Armstrong, Lao then
successfully plied his trade in Singapore and
had great success there, winning a Queen
Elizabeth II Cup (Listed, 2000m) and the Raffles
Cup (Listed, 1600m), both aboard Emerald Isles

(Shaadi). Other major wins followed like the
Kranji Mile (Listed, 1600m) on Pacific Prince
(Sky Filou) and the Patron’s Bowl (Listed,
1400m) on Bon Amie (Fairy King) before a
shoulder injury in a race fall forced Lao to hang
up his boots in 2008.
Lao made a comeback in 2013 and
eventually moved back to Macau in 2016.
Frustrated by lack of opportunity, Lao again
quit riding, but the racing bug is a hard one to
shake and at the beginning of last season Lao
found himself back riding trackwork.
Weight is still not an issue with
Lao being able to ride at 118 pounds
and, whilst the stats don’t read well,
he has not had much in the way
of talent to sit on since his return.
However, he is riding with all the
confidence and judgment that made
him a leading name in Macau in
the 1990s and the early years of the
2000s.
Joe Lau was back in the winner’s
circle with an impressive winning double
on Saturday’s turf card with Crown Of Gold
(Duporth) and Heartgoodallwell (Sebring).
Crown Of Gold looked super in racing away
with the Class 4 over 1500 metres under jockey
Luis Corrales. The four-year-old had shown
ability in three previous runs with two nice
placings on the sand; however, Saturday was
his first tilt at the 1500-metre journey. The easy
manner of his victory and the time suggests
better days ahead.
Heartgoodallwell was the second of Lau’s
winners when he literally jumped out of the
ground late to win the last of the day, the Class 3
& 4 over 1200 metres under Charlie Chan.
In a race run at cracking speed,
Heartgoodallwell was a mile back early and
still spotting them eight lengths coming to the
corner. Chan had to weave a path between
runners to get clear running before the gelding
sprouted wings over the final 100 metres to
win clearly on the line by two lengths from
Rivalry (Pierro), with You And You Alone (Love
Conquers All) a head away third.

BY PAUL CARAZZO
Of all the recent government
Covid-19 initiatives recently
announced, it is generally thought
that the JobKeeper payment for
employers is only available to profitable horse
businesses that have established employees.
If you thought this was the case, read on, upon
review of the recently announced JobKeeper
legislation, I have some pleasant surprises for you.
Below, I will work through the four common
business structures and explain how it is possible
for business owners that operate as sole traders or
through trusts, partnerships and companies, to be
eligible for JobKeeper even if their businesses are
currently in losses and/or they aren’t being paid
wages.

JobKeeper – positive updatecould benefit your horse business
JobKeeper payment – quick overviewA JobKeeper payment is a minimum payment ($1,500 per fortnight)
the Government will pay to eligible businesses (defined below) to ensure
they are able to keep their eligible employees (defined below) employed
by them during this Covid-19 period.
The first payment will be received by employers from the ATO in the
first week of May, 2020 and will be backdated to be payable from the
scheme commencement of March 30, 2020. Payments under JobKeeper
can be received up to September 27, 2020.
• Eligible employers
All businesses who meet the turnover tests below can now register their
interest with the ATO to receive the JobKeeper payment for their employees.
Update to “Turnover tests” for employers All businesses (including sole traders) can now register their interest to
receive the JobKeeper payments for their employees (or themselves if sole
traders) if they meet the various turnover tests. The most applicable test to the
horse industry is that their turnover has been reduced by more than 30 per
cent relative to a comparable period a year ago (of at least a month).
Since our original release on JobKeeper a few weeks ago, the ATO has
given more details as to how to apply the “turnover test”. This is a crucial
consideration for employers and is noted below.
How to calculate a fall in turnover for the first fortnight starting 30 March 2020To work out your fall in turnover, you can compare either:
• GST turnover for March, 2020 with GST turnover for March, 2019
• projected GST turnover for April, 2020 with GST turnover for April, 2019
• projected GST turnover for the quarter starting April 2020 with GST
turnover for the quarter starting April, 2019
How you choose to project your fall in turnover is not dependent on
whether you report a quarterly or monthly BAS, though you can do that if
it is easier.
If you work out that you qualify for the JobKeeper payments for the
first fortnight because your turnover has declined by the relevant amount,
you remain eligible and do not need to keep testing turnover in following
months. However, you will have ongoing monthly reporting requirements.
More information will be provided soon.
The ATO also has the discretion to set out alternative tests that can
establish your eligibility when turnover periods are not appropriately
comparable (for example, if your business has been in operation less
than a year). We will provide more information soon about alternative
tests.
• Eligible employees
Carrazzo Consulting Pty Ltd | Chartered Accountants - www.carrazzo.com.au
Eligible employers will be able to receive
and pay the JobKeeper payments to various
employee categories, including, but not limited
to:
• Employees who were employed by you as
employees as at March 1, 2020;
• Employees currently employed by you
(including those stood down or re-hired);
• Employees who are full-time, part-time, or
long-term casuals (to get the payment for
a casual employee, they must have been
employed by you on a regular basis for longer
than 12 months as at March 1, 2020); and
• Employees who are not in receipt of a
JobKeeper Payment from another employer.
• Special eligibility for horse business structures with no employees
Presuming the above eligibility conditions for employers and
employees are satisfied, note below how a “nominated” employee for the
following common business structures are eligible to receive JobKeeper.
• Sole traders
The proprietor will be eligible if they do not receive JobKeeper from
another source.
Another reminder: for verification purposes, businesses without
employees, such as a sole trader:
• will need to provide an ABN for their business;
• nominate an individual to receive the payment;
Carrazzo Consulting Pty Ltd | Chartered Accountants - www.carrazzo.com.au
under the business participation rules and give appropriate notice to the
ATO. In this scenario, your employer cannot nominate you for JobKeeper
payments.
• Partnerships
A single partner in a partnership can be nominated. This single
partner must not be receiving JobKeeper from another source.
• Trusts
A single individual beneficiary of a trust can be nominated to receive
JobKeeper payments. This individual beneficiary must not be receiving
JobKeeper from another source.
The beneficiaries of a trust are outlined and defined within its trust deed.
• Companies
A single director or shareholder of a company can be nominated.
These businesses will also receive JobKeeper payments for their other
eligible employees.
This single director must not be receiving JobKeeper from another
source.
These initiatives are a step forward, but
it is noted by accounting bodies, such as CPA
Australia, that they have limitations in ensuring
equitable access to JobKeeper within trust,
partnership, and company structures. They will
recommend to government that the ‘business
participant’ test be extended to all actively
engaged persons in trusts, partnerships and
companies.
For more details on JobKeeper, please refer
to our recent release titled “JobKeeper subsidy
for businesses and employees” on the Carrazzo
blog at www.carrazzo.com.au.
