Satpara Dam:

Satpara is a recently completed medium-size multi-purpose concrete-faced earth-filled

Location:

Dam located downstream of the existing Satpara Lake on the Satpara Stream approximately 4 km from

the town of Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.

1. Satpara Dam - Gilgit Baltistan

The dam has enlarged the size of Satpara Lake, generates 17.36 MW of hydroelectricity, supplies power

to approximately 30,000 households in the Skardu Valley.

Objectives:

• The main objective of the Satpara Dam and Irrigation Project

• is to mitigate the energy shortage in Gilgit-Baltistan by adding

• 17.6 megawatts to the local pow

Main Activities:

• Fund the completion of civil engineering, mechanical, and

• electrical components of the dam structures, power

• Houses 3 and 4, and major canals of the irrigation system.

Result to date:

• Two nurseries for fruit plants, one green house, and four fruit orchards has been established.

• Formed 156 water users associations; 132 of them have already been registered with the local go

vernment

• Eight farmers enterprise groups and ten women processor groups have been formed to facilitate i

ntroduction of new skills and knowledge.

• Trained 202 farmers in the post-harvest management of cherries and helped sell their cherries in

Islamabad leading to a 30-40% increase in the incomes of the participating farmers.

• 11 tertiary level water courses have been constructed.

• Completed socio-economic surveys to collect baseline data on the horticultural and dairy producti

on,

• processing, and marketing in the area.

Irrigation:

Satpara irrigates 15,536 acres (62.87 km2) of land and supplies 3.1 million gallons per day drinking water

to Skardu city. Annual agricultural output in the Skardu Valley is expected to increase more than four-fold,

generating about $6 million in additional annual economic benefits to local communities.

Construction:

Construction of Satpara Dam commenced in April 2003 and completion was scheduled in November

2011. Power House Unit No: 1 was completed and came online on 6 October 2007 and Power House

Unit No: 2 was completed and came online on 30 December 2008. On 7 January 2011, the Pakistan and

the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) entered into an Enhanced Partnership

Agreement under which USAID agreed to provide US$ 26 million for the construction of Power House

Unit No: 3 & 4 and completion of remaining works on the dam.

2. Satpara Lake – Gilgit Baltistan

The Power House Unit No: 3 started commercial operation in May 2013 and Power House Unit No: 4

started commercial operation in June 2013. The official inauguration is still awaited and is expected to

take place before the end of fiscal year 2013.
