Welcome to the fourth edition of the Governor’s newsletter. As well as the usual details of your local Governors and their involvement within SASH, there is news and other useful information you may find helpful.

Young cancer patients reaching the end of their treatment can celebrate by ringing a special bell on the children’s ward at East Surrey Hospital.

Nine year old Florence rang it to mark the completion of two years of treatment for leukaemia, joined by her best friend, mother, father and the paediatric team from Outwood Ward.

“We are very proud of Florence,” said Louisa Unwin, SASH paediatric oncology clinical nurse specialist. “It has been so lovely for myself and the staff to mark this big occasion with her, after getting to know her over the past two years.”

Patient Story

New Projects Work has started on the refurbishment and expansion of the neo-natal unit.

The new unit will provide a far larger facility, as well as increasing the number of cots - and is expected to open in March 2020.

The current unit will remain open throughout, and works are being done in a way that ensures as little possible disruption to babies, parents and staff.

Evening and weekend GP appointments - are available for all East Surrey and West Sussex registered GP patients at local GP hubs. Patients can access these appointments by contacting their own GP practice during normal office hours.

Did you know?

Health and wellbeing day The Trust is holding its annual Wellbeing Day on Tuesday 24th September 2019 from 10.30 am - 2.30 pm. The event will promote a range of health and wellbeing activities for staff, including taster sessions, demonstrations and information. There will be around 50 stalls and a free “take a break” cafe serving drinks and cake.

For West Sussex patients there are many GP hubs in the area and your own GP practice will provide you with an appointment at your nearest hub.

Volunteering Update This quarter we focus on the amazing work our volunteers do in and around the gardens at East Surrey Hospital.

Volunteers care for the seven courtyard spaces, all of which vary in size, shape and planting.

The courtyard gardens at East Surrey Hospital are developed and maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers, co-ordinated by Denise Moseling, who is a retired consultant paediatrician. She has been doing this since 2011, when she noticed how overgrown the area, which is now the Camomile Courtyard, was whilst her husband was in hospital.

There is wildlife in amongst the foliage – a blackbird’s nest in the totem pole garden at present – and evidence of other nesting birds.

The Scout group which did some work on the gardens; funded by the Friends of East Surrey Hospital, populated most of the gardens with gnomes and butterflies on sticks. Denise reviewing their presence, collected the whole lot in two bin bags, and put them on one side for disposal.

The following day she returned to find them all back in place, as if nothing had happened!

At present they are restoring the Capel courtyard, after the building works in the area. Denise could always use more support, so please do contact: Joy.matthews1@nhs.net

A 70th birthday party was recently held in the cardiac garden, and it is hoped to host events such as coffee mornings and afternoon teas , to raise funds for the hospital.

It may interest you to know that the photographs of plants, flowers and gardens in this and previous Governors’ Newsletters, were all taken in and around the East Surrey Hospital.

NHS 111 is a free phone service that is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

It offers a one-stop number for patients with urgent, but not life-threatening symptoms.

Patients registered with a GP in Sussex and East Surrey can now access evening and weekend GP appointments. Both routine and urgent appointments can be booked through the patient’s own GP practice in the normal way, during normal opening hours.

Minor Injury and Minor IllnessMinor Injuries units and the Urgent Treatment Centre treat most injuries or illnesses that are urgent but not life threatening. For example sprains and strains, broken bones, minor burns and scalds, minor head and eye injuries, bites and stings, infected wounds, minor head injuries, eye problems such as infections and scratches.

The group, although in its early days; addresses vital on-going issues for example:

• NHS Rainbow badge campaign – overseeing the implementation of badges to be worn by key staff. This enables LGBT+ people, regardless of how they identify or define themselves, to approach, talk to and receive appropriate support if required.

• Gender pay gap – reporting on a variety of subjects, including disability data, within different pay bands and looking at how to bridge any gender pay gaps. Yvonne Kraku, our patient governor, is a member of the inclusion steering group.

Car Parking Update The new Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system went live in May at East Surrey Hospital.

Since then 160,000 visitors and patients have used the system. Inevitably with a new system there have been some initial teething problems but the vast majority of users are using the system with no issues.

There are clear benefits such as being able to pay on-line, no lost tickets and far more reliable barriers and ticket machines.

Staff will be moving to the new system in early Autumn.

Fundraising for East Surrey Hospital’s new Neonatal Unit

Every year nearly 500 babies need special care from East Surrey Hospital at the very start of their lives – and we are now building a brand new unit so they can get the very best care.

The current neonatal intensive care unit at East Surrey Hospital is restricted in its capacity, which has an impact on the number of babies we can care for at any one time, and the comfort of the families under the care of the unit

Olive, who is now three, inspired this new appeal and lived in the hospital for the first 110 days of her life, with her mum Keata.

Alongside major investment by Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (SASH), we need your support to help transform care for these premature or very unwell babies, like Olive, and for their parents. You can help by spreading the word

Governor profile Each edition we profile one of your elected Governors.

Name: Jo Josh

Representing: Voluntary Sector

I am a Trustee of the charity Surrey Community Action, which is one of eight partner organisations from which SASH governors are appointed. The others are Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs,) West Sussex County Council, Surrey County Council and Brighton and Sussex Medical School.

I work in media and communications, in the last decade focusing on the health and voluntary sectors rather than big brands. My clients include the British HIV Association, mental health and family support charities, and I also work with Public Health England and the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE.)

I live within a mile of East Surrey Hospital and am so impressed with the improvements I have witnessed. As a governor I take every opportunity to share these with voluntary sector networks but my most interesting role to date is as a member of the Patient Information Review Group, where we review patient leaflets and treatment advice.

Organ Donation The week beginning 2nd September was organ donation week. This is an annual event that is designed to increase awareness of the need for people to be on the register, the importance of transplantation and to celebrate achievements over the year. Currently the number of people waiting for transplantation is falling and in some areas more people receive a kidney transplant than endure dialysis.
