www.loveandlogic.com by Charles Fay

Each month, I will include an article from Love and

Logic that has caused me to think a bit. Agree or

disagree, but many/most of Love & Logic suggestions

really work. Here’s one from October 7 :th

Are there any adults in your life who probably didn’t

get enough instruction on basic social skills when they

were preschoolers? While these folks can be a bit

annoying at times, it’s probably wise to remember that

their lack of relational finesse has probably made their

own lives less than peachy. When I remember this, it’s

easier for me to remain empathetic with them. It also

reminds me why it is so important to help our young

children learn the basic social graces.

Most of this teaching should take place in the

classroom of real world experience. That is, at the

very moment our children are interacting with others.

Listed below are just a few of the things we ought to

expect our children to do:

-Shake people’s hands and look into their eyes

-Smile

-Say “hello”

-Say “thank you”

-Say “please”

-Say “goodbye” and wish people well

I’m constantly amazed at how many parents fail to

expect these things out of their preschoolers. Instead,

their children are allowed to snub others or to hide

behind their parents’ backs.

Now I understand that some children are extremely

shy. I also understand that this takes work and can feel

a bit awkward from time to time. In loveandlogic.com

books, they teach the importance of having high

expectations for our children. Parents who maintain

high expectations raise far happier and more socially

skilled kids.

Science is FUN!!“Is it Science time?” “I have Science!”...comments

heard often in M-W-F classes at Noah’s Ark. These

children are Scientists!

. Our Science includes:

! A GREEN Science table

The October table included lots of

nature stuff....much of which was used in the vases at

our Spaghetti Supper

! Science shelves

These shelves are getting more and more

crowded as the children bring in stuff for us to study

with our 5 senses

! Science Talk

This experience has become a chance for

children to speak in front of their peers. They share

lots of important information and great vocabulary.

They also “lead” their session allowing children to ask

questions and give more

info.

The Science table is a busy

place every day. During

clean-up, we place a

“CLOSED” sign on the

table, and the children

know what that means.

The Eau Claire Public Library will visit the M-W-F am group on the Second Wednesday ofeach month. Each month they deliver a specialtheme bin, to be shared and used by all thechildren at Noah’s Ark. We are so lucky tohave this partnership. Last month, SamCarpenter, an alumni Noah’s Ark mom, was ourstory teller. How fun is that! We learn newfinger plays, great songs to move to, and hearthe best children’s books ever!

Apple Tasting:

On a special day inOctober, we enjoyedyummy apples. Each ofthe children wereinvited to:1. Taste differentapples

2. Explore the parts of an apple3. Print with apples4. Paint an apple shape5. Talk about apples, using great vocabulary

During our discussions, Mrs. Knickerbocker andMrs. “K” peeled an apple to show the 3 parts:skin, flesh, core with seeds. It was fun to findthe “STAR” in the middle, that God has as asurprise for us all.

We very simply talked about the 3 parts of God:Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 3 parts - oneapple....3 parts - ONE GOD! We tried the crossshape on ourselves as we said, “Father Son andHoly Spirit”!

In the Art Center Your children’s art will be “free form” atNoah’s Ark during these early months. Wewant them to have many experiences withmedia and tools. We also do LOTS of painting. Children almost “dream” when they are at theeasels. It’s so fun to watch them experience theprocess. October art included:

-DOT MAKER designs at the easels (standingat the easels doing art gives it a specialperspective)

-FINGERPRINTING on apple shapes, experiencing the coolness and texture of painton paper

-Apple Printing....using cut apples (bothlengthwise and width wise) to print apple shapeson paper

-Play Doh fun...an activity that builds fingerstrength, sharing skills, counting opportunities, texture experience, and lots of conversation withfriends

-Smelly Markers....combining markers withodors is a conversation starter and vocabulary builder for the children

-Paddle Painting... paddle painting allows for“smearing” of colors and shapes

-Drip Drop Art...dripping with pippettes oncoffee filters gives children the opportunity todevelop small motor skills/finger/hand control

-Painting with Spaghetti brushes...combines a

“theme” with media and tools

-Wooden “Stick” Pencil Art...using a “stick”with colored pencils inside to draw and design(much like the many sticks children havebrought for science)

-Paint A Pumpkin...using manyshades/tints/textures/sparkling orange and goldpaints to make awesome pumpkins for our kidboards

-White Chalk on Black Paper...to create anawesome “opposite experience”

-Black/Orange Spider Patterns...fun withpatterns and shapes

All projects allowed your children to exploreand experiment with media, and have fun in theprocess. Your children are ALL artists!
