“Jesus came to the world to give us life; life in abundance.” We can give only what we

have and we are called to give in abundance. It is inevitable for us to strengthen, enrich and refresh us in the fulfillment of our ministry. And that’s the very reason why our beloved Archbishop, His Grace Mar Kuriakose Bharanikulangara organized a “Refresher Course” for all the priests in our diocese. It was a two day program packed with prayer, classes, discussions and entertainment etc…

Our beloved Archbishop initiated the first session at 09:00am, after the welcome and outline of the program given by Fr. Martin Palamattam, on 20 July 2018. His Grace expressed the joy of Christ and the bright future of Priest in the journey of priesthood. Citing the Canon law, he steered through the challenges that are faced and the obstacles that can be overcome through a strong message. Through his message, he strongly put across the pride of priesthood, which is prominent in our faith. He motivated the priests with life experiences and powerful word of God, which inspired the hearts of the followers.

After the introductory talk, a brief history of our diocese was presented by Rev. Fr. Benny Palatty and Rev. Fr. Martin Palamattam. Fr. Benny Palatty took the congregation on a journey through the historical milestones achieved by the Faridabad Diocese from the time it was a Mission Station of Erankulam-Angamaly Archdiocese. Fr. Matin Palamattam gave insight on the development and challenges confronted by the Diocese in its beginning phases. Mr. P. J. Thomas, Pastoral Council President, also flavored the session by sharing the experiences of the forerunners in the history of Faridabad Diocese. It was really an inspiring session.

REFRESHER COURSEMotivating talk about ‘Priestly Communion’ by

Msgr. Jose Vettickal, was one of the highlights of the day as he elaborately touched upon the community and unity of the diocese. He extensively spoke on the relationship between priests and Archbishop and the strengths of the Catholic faith, evoking the early memories of the foundation of Apostolic Church. Morning session ended with the Holy Mass concelebrated with Archbishop. After the Eucharistic celebration, the congregation dispersed for Lunch at 01:00pm.

The afternoon session started with Rosary at 2.15pm, followed up by a talk on Financial Management in the Parishes at 2.30pm by Fr. Davis Kalliyath, Procurator, Mr. George Kuruvila, Auditor and Mr. Mathew M. Joseph, Asst. Finance Manager. They spoke in length about the financial management and developments in the various aspects of parishes. It was really an informative session with lots of queries and solutions. After this long session everyone took a tea break and shared a free time of socializing and getting acquainted with one other.

Post tea break, we had the evening prayer at 05:00pm tailed by a talk on Parish Administration by Msgr. Stanley Pulprayil who familiarized the community with numerous aspects of administration that hold an integral position in the functioning of the church. His session was occupied with both practical and theoretical sides of parish administration. The last talk of the day was by Msgr. Cyriac Kochalumkal CST who inculcated the zeal and beauty of Mission and Religious Life and how a faithful heart can imbibe these in a day to day life. The first day of the course concluded with delicious supper and night prayer.

Second day, 21 July 2018, Saturday, of the Refresher Course began with the Holy Mass presided over by the Archbishop and concelebrated by all the priests at 07:00am. After breakfast, the Archbishop continued his introductory talk, from where he left on the previous day. His Grace gave a motivated session on the liturgical celebrations in the dioceses citing the instructions in the Holy mass text (THAKSA). He inspired the priests of the diocese with his pious experience on the strong faith of the church holding everyone together through the love and devotion for Lord Jesus Christ.

The next session regarding the talk on Curia by Fr. Robi Kuthaniyil, started at 11:00am. This session was an exhilarating experience as the session had discussions, which enabled the listeners to get involved in the administration of the diocese. Fr. Martin Palamattam took over the next talk at 12:15pm on Eparchial Tribunal. He gave a detailed class on updates and clarifications regarding the jurisdictions

and settling issues that arise within the church.Last session of the program was an open

discussion forum. This session had quite enriching moments with discussions, involving each individual present. Participation by each person was the highlight of this concluding session. And the program concluded with the wholehearted vote of thanks expressed by Fr. Biju Kannampuzha.

The two-day ‘Refresher Course’ was genuinely enlightening and fruitful for everyone who was part of the course, some way or the other. It was infact a grace filled occasion to look into ourselves and to learn, strengthen and deepen our convictions and faith in the providence of God. Thus to evaluate each one of us if we were in the right track. And we are sure that the new convictions and strength that we have obtained in and through this refresher course will definitely take us ahead in bearing witness to Christ and shepherding His flock that is entrusted to our Pastoral Care.

Seminary NEWS

HOME OF LOVE (ST. KURIAKOSE ELIAS CHAVARA MINOR

SEMINARY, THOMMANKUTHU)God can restore what is broken and change it in to something amazing. All you need is faith (Joel 2:25). When the entire Kerala experienced the terrific realm of calamity, we the seminarians from St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara Minor Seminary, Thommankuthu also gone through the Exodus experience in the massive flood in Kerala. But the word of God strengthens us in all such situations to have hope in Him. On 15th August, the water level increased and we started shifting things to the first floor from the ground floor. Meanwhile neighbours insisted us to shift to the camp since two landslides happened at Malayinchi, a nearby hilly area. So the entire seminarians and priests shifted to the parish hall of Thommankuthu parish. Even though it was just an overnight know-how, it became a revelation towards the strength of almighty God who takes care of us in all difficulties.

Relief Activities of Faridabad diocese were conducted in Thommankuthu area under the leadership of Minor Seminary Staff and Students. Hundreds of relief kits were distributed. Thus the seminarians got the message of helping the needy in this difficult juncture.

Earlier in the starting of August, Archbishop Mar Kuriakose Bharanikulangara visited our seminary. He had personal meetings with seminarians and also with priests. Archbishop inaugurated new basketball court for our seminarians. In the inaugural function,

our beloved Archbishop made a perfect shot pocket and we all appreciated his shooting skill. After the inauguration, a friendly basketball match between the seminarians was conducted. Archbishop also inaugurated the central garden which is named as Nalukettu garden. Different kinds of vegetable seeds are planted in the central garden. Archbishop also blessed new cow shed. The entire seminary, staff and students had a photo session with Archbishop after the morning mass.

World NEWS

Vatican City, Oct 17, 2018: Pope Francis told a group of Italian seminarians to report immediately to their bishop if they ever see or suspect any kind abuse, sexual or otherwise, on the part of a priest.

“On this point, speak clearly,” the pope told the students from Lombardy over the weekend.

“If you see something like [abuse], [go] immediately to the bishop. To help that abusive brother. Immediately to the bishop.”

The pope met the group in the Vatican’s St. Clementine hall Oct. 13. The text of the lengthy question and answer session was released by the Vatican Oct. 16. During the meeting, he answered a question about scandals in the Church and how to help Catholics to not lose hope despite the “poverty of its ministers.”

“Scandal wounds. We must be clear: on this point do not yield. To scandals, no. Especially when the scandals hurt little ones,” he said, emphasizing that though statistics show abuse by priests or other clerics to be a small percentage of total cases in society, it is not a reason to ignore the issue.

“No. Because even if it was just one priest, this is a monstrosity,” he underlined.

Pope Francis also spoke about other “scandals” brought about by the public sins of priests, condemning worldliness in particular, and giving the example of a priest who is polite and well-liked, but never seen praying, going to the hospital to visit the sick, or performing works of mercy.

For a priest to scandalize the people of God “is very bad,” he said.

The pope went on to say that in his home country of Argentina, the people are not easily scandalized, but take action, even being able “to forgive a poor priest who has a double life with a woman and does not know how to solve it, saying: ‘Ah, poor man, let’s help him...’ but do not condemn immediately.”

“The people have great wisdom,” the pope said, and urged the seminarians to always condemn scandal when they see it, going to the bishop or even directly to the brother priest to say: “Look, you are scandalizing people with this [behavior].
