Everybody has heard about the Taj Mahal of Agra. It is in the same city of Agra that the famous “

Red Taj Mahal” is located. The Red Taj , which is one fifth of the size of the Taj Mahal, is in fact a tomb in the Catholic cemetery of Agra erected in Mughal style for the Dutch Catholic colonel John William Hessing. He was a native of Utrecht in Holland and came to Ceylon as an employee of Dutch East India Company. Later he served under the Nizam of the Deccan and in 1784 he entered into the service of the Marathas. Madho Rao Scindia employed him to raise a bodyguard for him, which eventually grew to 4 battalions. Later Madho Rao Sindhia gave him the right to command the fort of Agra. He died in 1803 while defending the fort against the British

Hessing’s wife Anne Hessing built the Red Taj Mahal in memory of her beloved husband. It stands separate from other tombs of the Christian cemetery of Agra , where Christians, after their death, were brought from various places exclusively for burial. His tomb is a miniature of the Taj in red Agra sandstone. The tomb is essentially Mughal in design, erected on a square platform with a corridor around it and topped by the typical Mughal onion shaped dome. This is one of the oldest Christian grave and the most prominent Christian mausoleum in India.

Red Taj Mahal in Catholic Cemetery of AgraThere are more than 80 Christian Armenian

graves in this cemetery and many European travellers and adventurers buried here, whose tombs were also modelled on Mughal style. The Christian Armenian traders formed one of the major mercantile segments in Mughal India and good many

of them were in the service of the Mughals. Abdul Hai, who was the Chief Justice under Akbar, Mirza Zul- Qarnain, who was the amir of the Mughal court under Jahangir and Shah Jahan and Domingo Pires, who was an interpreter and ambassador for Akbar for his interactions with the Portuguese were a few among them. They along with the Europeans buried there contributed their due share in making India in the way we find now.

One of the leaders of freedom movement and Malayali Memorial of 1892 in Kerala was Nidhirikkal Mani Kathanar. He became a priest at a time when there was strong demand among the St.Thomas Christians to have indigenous bishops instead of European missionary bishops. The love for Indianness and indigenous leadership made him participate in the freedom struggle of Kerala. He was a secretary to the Padroado Governador of Cranganore in 1861 and later secretary to Visitar Apostolic Archbishop Leo Moireen. Bishop Marcelinose made him the parish priest of three major parishes(Alleppey, Kuravilangadu and Muttuchira) simultaneously. This position enabled him to get connected with the major leaders of Kerala , particularly those linked with Alleppey and Trivandrum and work towards programmes of self-rule. Alleppey was the major port of Kerala at that point of time. He mobilized the support of Syrian Christians for the Malayali Memorial, with which freedom struggle started in Kerala. In 1889 Bishop Charles Levinge made him his Vicar General with Pontifical powers. He started two dailies Malayala Manorama and Deepika , which revolutionized the reading habit of Malayalis during the period of freedom struggle in Kerala.

With the joint support of Mar Dionysius of Jacobite Church, he chalked out programmes for a joint college in Kottayam in 1890s. He and Kandathil Varghese Mappila launched Bhashaposhini, which is now one of the best literary journal in Malayalam . He became its co-patron. He started an English Medium school in Kuravilangadu in 1894, which served as a main door for thousands of youngsters to get access to higher education and higher jobs in national and international job markets. Because of the seeds of national consciousness that he had sowed in Kuravilangadu, this place became the converging point for different streams of nationalist thinking and political consciousness for the years to come.

A Christian leader of great significance in the mercantile and political life of South India was Thachil Mathu Tharakan from Kuthiathode. He was the son of Thariathu, the minister of Alengadu king. Later Alengadu was merged into Travancore with the expansionist policies of Marthanda Varma(1742-1752), who conquered a chain of territories upto Angamali in the north with the help of the army trained under the former Dutch captain Eustachius de Lannoy. When a fortification was built in the northern part of Travancore-Cochin kingdoms to contain the southern expansion of the Zamorin of Calicut, De Lannoy got great amount of support from Thachil Mathu Tharakan. De Lannoy introduced him to Dharma Raja, the new ruler of Travancore and Raja Kesava Das, his prime minister. For the purpose of diverting commodities from the newly conquered territories without allowing them to go to Cochin, a new Travancorean port was established at Alleppey in 1763, whose main architects were Thachil Mathu Tharakan and Raja Kesava Das. Thachil Mathu Tharakan, who gained control over the monopoly trade in salt and tobacco by this time, had also bought some ships for trade purposes and shifted his residence to Thathamppilly, where he also built a church for the local Christian community. It was in this church of Thathampally that Mar Thoma VI got reunited with Catholic Churchin

1799, though he went back to Jacobite faith after a short while. Mathu Tharakan sponsored a major part of the expenditure incurred for the European journey of Mar Joseph Kariyattil and Fr. Thomas Paremakkel in 1780s. He extended liberal support to the construction of Nedumkotta to prevent the southward expansion of Tipu Sultan and enlisted the service of lot of youngsters to fight against Tipu. During the time of Tipu’s expedition, Thachil Mathu Tharakan built the church and the presbyteral house of Vadayar for the residence of Governador Thomas Paremakkel. When Travancore was in financial crisis he gave a loan of 15 lakhs , which the state could not give him back . Things changed by 1798 when the weak ruler Balarama Varma came to the throne. Under the leadership of Velu Thampi, the Nairs rose against the office bearers of the king, and arrested the key personalities including Mathu Tharakan who developed commercial negotiations with the English during the previous regime. The two ears of Thachil Mathu Tharakan were cut and he along with his children was put behind the bars. Though he was released later he died soon in 1814. The Travancorean government owed an amount of 14 lakhs to Thachil Mathu Tharakan; however, Velu Thampi cut it short to 85, 000. Out of it, Rs.26, 000 was given to Tharakan. The balance 59, 000 was given by Velu Thampi to the British resident, who in turn invested Rs. 10, 500 each in the name of the Bishops of Catholic and non-Catholic factions in English East India Company. It was this money that later came to be called “Vattippanam” , which was the major bone of contention between the Jacobites and the Orthodox factions till recently. The resident gave Rs. 20, 000 to the college of Kottayam, Rs. 5000 to another college in Nagercoil , Rs. 8000 for the teaching of doctrines of Syrian Christians and a share to the leprosy hospital of Munambam(Pallipuram). One cannot ignore the great contribution that Thachil Mathu Tharakan gave in the development of the port of Alleppey and in the economic and commercial prosperity that Travancore achieved during the period between 1760 and 1798.

As Proverbs 16:9 says, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” We indeed had a lot of plans for this year, but God is leading us through his unexpected, unpredictable and unimaginable ways.

The Diocesan event for youth, Bezalel - Shadow of God, which was introduced last year by the present Dexco team, was conducted virtually through a series of 7 competitions. The poster of Bezalel was officially released on Sunday, 15th of September by His Grace Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara, at Our Lady of Fatima Forane Church, Jasola following which the details of all the competitions and their rules and regulations had been shared through Forane and Parish Whatsapp groups.

On Saturday, 17th of October, through a virtual gathering, the event was inaugurated by His Grace Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara. During the event, M/s Chris John was felicitated by Auxiliary Bishop Mar Jose Puthenveetil, for her remarkable work as an NSS Volunteer and for being felicitated by the Presidential award online.

Following this, the competitions of Bezalel were successfully conducted each week, starting from 18th October till 23rd November. CHURCH FEAST: The parish celebrated the church feast on 11th October, 2020. Amidst this Covid-19 terror, celebrating Church feast was a challenge; however with the support and coordination of the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Babu Kurian Anithanam MST, the trustees and the entire parishioners, the entire week of feast turned into a great blessing. Apart from all the celebrations, the annual cultural event was the great highlight, titled as “Urakkamillaatha Saatan” turned into a great success. MARIAN DEVOTION THROUGH ROSARY: The Burari parish totally expressed their love and faith towards Mother Mary through Rosary recitation in the final 10 days of the month. The last day of the Rosary recitation was led by the Mathruvedhi members of the church with full day adoration exposing Holy Eucharist.FIRST HOLY COMMUNION & CONFIRMATION, November 22, 2020: It was a moment of immense joy for all the nine children of St. Mariam Thressia Church, Burari, as they received their first Holy Communion and Confirmation on 22nd November, 2020. The main celebrant of the day was the Auxilliary

Bishop of Faridabad Diocese, Mar Jose Puthenveettil, who offered the solemn Qurbana and administered the sacrament of Confirmation. Our beloved bishop addressed the children during his homily and stressed on the idea of eternal life in communion with Jesus, as an end goal for every Christian. We, the people in Burari extend our sincere gratitude towards His Excellency, Mar Jose Puthenveettil for his valuable time and presence in Burari Parish.. One thing that has to be appreciated is the true expression of faith by these young children even during the alarming pandemic hours. The thirst they had for Christ was quenched through their unbeatable spirit.

It gives an opportunity for students and parishioners to express their love and affection to their teachers. Since we are passing through a difficult situation due to the Covid-19 pandemic students organized a virtual skit based on the life story of St. Charles Borromeo- patron saint of catechism teachers. It highlighted the important role played by teachers in the faith forming of the young lives. During the occasion Rev. Fr. INFANT JESUS FORANE CHURCH, PALAM

PARISH HONOURS A BUDDING WRITER: Was the lockdown declared over the spread of Corona virus, Covid-19, a blessing or curse? It’s still a hotly debated enigma all over. However, it undoubtedly leans towards the bright side for Tomy Yacob, a youth parishioner of Infant Jesus Forane Church, Palam. The twenty year old, presently pursuing B.A. English (Honours) from Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi, used the uncertain and chaotic time to materialise his dream of authoring a book, and successfully accomplished the task by publishing his first, official literary piece titled ‘ALL FOR NEMO’, on the 9th of September 2020, that was well received and supported by all. His book is a commentary on the fairly common yet undiscussed theme of students’ futile struggle throughout school life, fighting for marks, and the endless comparisons being made by parents and teachers, thus forcing undue pressure on them to perform beyond their capacity. This often leads to a state of depression, hopelessness and even an extreme step; a phenomenon often ignored as ‘just a phase’. The book tries to subtly bring out a harsh and ambitious truth that the parents, who left their mother state, Kerala and live elsewhere as physical and emotional migrants, often want to fulfil their unrealized dreams, which they could not achieve in their own lives, through their children. The pressure is greatly intensified, forgetting that the apple cannot fall far from its tree. The children are then caught between the expectations of parents, teachers, society and their own, as if in a tug of war, unable to enjoy the simple moments of life. They become conscious that people evaluate them according to the marks they score in the 10th and 12th Boards. This limits the true worth of many who cannot cram things and score well, and hence feel let down by everyone. This book makes all slow down and wonder whether the blind and numb race is really worth it. Online Link For the book.Amazon: http://www.amazon.in/dp/B08HQ5KXQD

Tomy Yacob was honoured by Infant Jesus Forane Parish, Palam for his outstanding achievement at a young age and presented with a handsome memento, an encouragement to continue his efforts, by the parish priest Very Rev. Fr. Abraham Chempottickal on 18th October, 2020. Fr. Abraham congratulated him and wished him all best for a successful venture ahead. Catechism Teachers Day Celebration 2020: Infant Jesus Forane Catechism Department, Palam celebrated Catechism Teachers’ day on 1st November, 2020 (Sunday). Catechism Student Ms. Monica George gave an introduction about St. Charles Borromeo, the Patron Saint of catechists. Parish Priest Very Rev. Fr. Abraham Chempottickal, MST celebrated special Holy Qurbana for Catechism Teachers and students of Classes 9 to 12. Children led the Church Choir. In the homily, Fr. Abraham emphasised the importance of Catechism Teachers in a parish. Due to Covid -19 pandemic, children greeted the teachers through web media. Life tree: To remember and pray for the departed souls and the souls in the purgatory, Infant Jesus Forane Church celebrates Holy Qurbana and Oppis every day. All names of souls related to the parishioners are inscribed in the life tree placed in the tree and special prayers are offered for them.

We had our Catechism Teacher's Felicitation on 01.11.2020. We dedicated the Holy Mass for our Teachers on that day and soon after the Holy Mass began the felicitation. The programme was well organized and the students were at the forefront and they delivered inspired speeches about their teacher's. At the end we distributed gifts to our beloved teachers and they felt very happy and honored. Apart from this, a video was made and sent to the Teacher's group wherein each student from every class gave a short speech about their Teacher. On the whole it was an event of joy and happiness for our Catechism Teachers.

After a lot of If's and but's the renovation of our chapel was finally agreed and the renovation was started in the month of September and completed after one and a half months. By God's grace everything went on well. The inauguration and Blessing of the chapel was done under the auspices of His Excellency Bishop Jose Puthenveetil, Auxiliary Bishop. The function went on well and we had the ribbon cutting ceremony followed by Holy Mass and Dinner with the Bishop and Parish Council members. The Bishop gave a very inspiring and informative homily about the Punjab Mission. To support this noble cause, our parishioners lent great support by contributing nearly 1,00,650/- rupees as donation for the Punjab mission. It was a great noble gesture and sacrifice from their part because though it is the corona season and people are struggling to make ends meet yet they brushed aside all their setbacks and contributed generously for the mission. On the whole it was a great dream come true and we thank the Almighty God for his blessings and providence.
