Cyriac Kochalumkal, CST - Mission In-Charge, Jaitho (Punjab) w.e.f. 09 August 2018

Thanks and WelcomeWe remember with gratitude Rev. Fr. Manu Maprayil MST and Rev. Fr. Nixon Kottayil MCBS who

returned to their mother Provinces after their fruitful ministry in the diocese of Faridabad-Delhi.

Fr Manu Maprayil served for two years in our diocese as the Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Church,

Najfgarh. His hard work and missionary zeal is the sole reason behind the construction of the new

Parish church at Najfgarh. Fr Nixon Kottayil MCBS did his ministry in our diocese as the Parish Priest of

St Padre Pio Chruch, Rohini. The spiritual and pastoral life of the people of God was enriched by his charismatic leadership and pastoral

enthusiasm. We acknowledge with thanks their esteemed presence and ministry in the diocese and wish them God’s blessings and all the

best in their new ministries.

Diocese of Faridabad-Delhi extends a warm welcome to Rev. Fr. Shinto Pulikuzhiyil from the diocese

of Mananthavady and Rev. Fr. George Kochupurackal from the diocese of Idukki, who came to serve in

the diocese. The whole diocesan community welcomes them and wishes them success in their pastoral

ministries.

Annual RetreatDear Rev. Fathers,

Greetings from the Bishop’s House Karol Bagh.

Hope that this letter will find you in good health and cheer.

Our Annual Retreat will be held at Sanjoepuram Children’s Village from 26th November to 1st December 2018. The retreat preacher is Rev. George Mulanagattil MCBS.

May I remind you about certain important things to be specially taken care. As you know our Annual retreat is a special occasion for spiritual renewal and empowerment. It will definitely enable us to inflame the grace of ordination showered upon us so that we are able to lead our diocese and parishes in a more fruitful manner and experience the spirit of unum presbyterium. The affectionate advice of St. Paul is worthy of mention here. “For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands” (2 Tim. 1: 6). So May I request all of you to block these days in your diary and attend the retreat fully.

Please bring your Mass account and Confessional Patenti . Rev. Fr. Robi Kunthaniyil, Chancellor, will be General Coordinator of the retreat. For further details you may contact him, Mob. 8585917912.

I would like to place on record my sincere appreciation and gratitude for the commendable service you are rendering in your Parishes. Let us witness to the mercy and love of God for his folk through our pastoral ministry.

With fraternal regards and earnest prayers,Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara

DSYM NEWS

Annual General Body Meeting 2018

DSYM Annual General Body Meeting 2018 was held on 14th July, 2018 at the Hall of Divine Mercy, Bishop’s House, Karol Bagh, between 2-7 pm.

His Grace Archbishop Mar Kuriakose Bharanikulangara, Patron of DSYM and Bishop of Diocese of Faridabad-Delhi, Rev. Msgr. Jose Vettickal, Vicar General of the Diocese and Rev. Fr. Julius Karukanthara, Director DSYM chaired the meeting.

After the agenda was read out, the meeting started with the official prayer of the youth movement of the Syro Malabar Church, led by Pious Francy, Diocesan Vice President and Navin James, Diocesan Youth Representative. The representatives of the General Body joined in with the intercessory prayers.

Bivin Varghese, President DSYM and Deputy President, Global Syro-Malabar Youth Movement (SMYM) welcomed the dignitaries and the

General Body. His address revolved around three messages: being human in a digital world, be the shepherd with the smell of sheep and a ship is safe in harbour, but that’s not what ships are made for. He also thanked and congratulated the team for their commitment to the organization, on behalf of the Diocesan Executive Committee, DSYM and the Executive Committee of SMYM.

The meeting was inaugurated by the Patron, the Vicar General, the Director, President, Vice President, Treasurer, and two representatives from the General body, Ms. Akhila SK and Mr. Arnold Manuel Joseph, by lighting the ceremonial lamp and thereafter followed by the presentation of the Annual Diocesan Report by Ms. Sharon Francis, Diocesan Vice President and the Annual Treasury Report by Mr. Jobby Philip, Diocesan Treasurer.

Both the reports were submitted to the General Body for discussion and approval and thereafter approved and signed by the Patron,

Vicar General, Director and President. This was followed by the Presidential Address

by the Patron. He highlighted the importance of evangelisation in the Diocese of Faridabad stating that the beauty of the Catholic Church is its diversity. He went on to state that “Syro-Malabar Church must grow global” and stressed on the vital role mission stations like Punjab have in the making of the Global Catholic Church. Bishop also familiarized the general body with the new model of evangelization, i.e. through social media. “As Christians, configure yourself to Christ and the Christian values”, said His Grace in his address. Thirdly, he also spoke about the significance of Youth Catechism/Adult Catechism. He urged the DSYM members to take effective leadership in facilitating secular and political discussions at the Parish level.

The day also marked our Bishop’s feast day. A cake was cut to celebrate the occasion. Yet another glorious moment for DSYM, Bishop declared the year as The Year of Youth and unveiled the poster for the year.

Thereafter, the unit reports were presented by the unit representatives. Parishes were called alphabetically and were asked to present their reports within two minutes. To better facilitate the presentation, units were asked to send in their reports a week prior to the meeting duly signed and sealed by the Vicar. After presenting the reports, they were handed over to the Diocesan Executive Committee.

This was followed by the generous words of blessings from our Vicar General Rev. Msgr. Jose Vettickal. In his address, he focussed on the importance of the Word of God and urged everyone to learn the scriptures.

In the Director’s address, he introduced a few key initiatives and programmes for the year. • He introduced the change from DSYM bylaws

to SMYM bylaws with changes. o Continue to use the name ‘DSYM- Delhi Syro-

Malabar Youth Movement,o The Heavenly Patron of the youth movement

the same that has been in use o Going forward, units outside the territory of

Delhi-NCR will be named as ‘SMYM-Diocese of Faridabad.’

o All official letterheads will have the header as Delhi Syro-Malabar Youth Movement with sub-title in brackets as Youth Movement of Syro-Malabar Church

• Forane committees to be formed. The two councillors from each forane committee will be eligible to contest for elections at the Diocese level.

• August 12 to be celebrated in Parishes as youth Sunday. The poster would be mailed to all unit executives to be put up in the Parishes, along with a youth prayer. Bishop’s circular also to be read out in parishes. Unit executives to coordinate a youth year awareness programme in their Parishes.

• He also introduced Santhome Youth Convention, a one day youth convention and for the same, a core committee was formed wherein two individuals from each forane nominated themselves.

• Father also introduced a lucky draw coupon scheme to raise funds for the convention.

• The Annual Calendar was also presented. The meeting concluded at 7 p.m. with the

final blessings. Navin James, Diocesan Youth Representative delivered the Vote of Thanks. Thereafter, everyone dispersed for high tea and refreshments. A total of 23 parishes attended the Annual

JULY-AUGUST2018

Archbishop John Barwa of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar and the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) are marking the 10th anniversary of the anti-Christian carnage with a Mass on August 25 at St Joseph Convent School in Bhubaneswar.

Christians in India will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terrible massacre and atrocities inflicted on Christians in the eastern state of Odisha, with a Holy Mass in the state capital Bhubaneswar on August 25. Archbishop John Barwa together with the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) are organizing the Holy Mass on the theme, “Reconciliation, Thanksgiving and Grace”, appealing for secularism, democracy, justice and peace and brotherhood.

Black day - August 25, 2008It was on August 25, 2008, that hell broke

loose on the Christians of Kandhamal District, with Hindu extremists attacking them for the August 23 murder of Hindu leader Swami ‎Lakshmanananda Saraswati, even though Maoist rebels ‎claimed the assassination.

Considered to be India’s worst anti-Christian persecution in 300 years, the outrage that followed for months, forced an estimated 56,000 Christians to flee to the safety of forests and homes of friends and relatives. Some 5,600 houses and 415 villages were raided and set on fire. According to government figures, 38 people were killed and two women

raped, though activists give a higher number. Scores of people were injured and permanently maimed. “The inhuman attack on innocent people caught unaware in the middle of the night of August 25, 2008 will always remain a black spot in the history of the traditionally peace loving people of Odisha and Independent India,” Archbishop Barwa said in a press statement announcing the August 25 anniversary Mass at St Joseph Convent School in Bhubaneswar.

“What was heartbreaking,” he said, was that the “massacre of the innocents continued unabated for months.” "What happened in Kandhamal, should have never happened and should never ever happen again,” he appealed.

Church close to the victimsSpeaking to Vatican news, Archbishop Barwa

said that in the past 10 years his archdiocese has “remained close to the victims”.

The Church, the archbishop said, has been the “prime diving force” for the legal process to seek justice and relief for those who have suffered. In this regard the archdiocese organized rallies, submitted memoranda to government authorities and is fighting for justice in the courts of law.

Archbishop Barwa said that in all these efforts, Christians have surrendered themselves to God, trusting that what is impossible to human beings is possible with God. He said Christians are praying for true forgiveness, reconciliation and peace.

JULY-AUGUST2018

Year of Youth Declared in the Eparchy of Faridabad-DelhiThe global Catholic Church is preparing itself for the XV ORDINARY GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF

THE SYNOD OF BISHOPS (From 3rd to 28th October) on the theme Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment.

In response to this historic event and extraordinary blessing to the youth ministry, the Eparchy of Faridabad-Delhi, celebrates 2018 as the year of youth. The patron of the Diocesan Youth Movement, Delhi Syro-Malabar Youth Movement (DSYM), and Bishop of the Diocese, His Grace Archbishop Mar Kuriakose Bharanikulangara declared 2018 as the Year of Youth during the Annual General Body Meeting of DSYM. Later in the week, during a brief ceremony held at Pastoral Center of the Diocese at Jasola, Archbishop unveiled the logo of Youth Year.

The Pre- Synodal Meeting of Young PeopleThe youth of the church witnessed a historic moment in the month of March when more

than 300 young representatives from around the world, convened in Rome at the inaugural Pre-Synodal Meeting of Young People. We also had the participation of 15,000 young people engaged online through the Facebook groups.

The final output of the meeting was a Pre-Synodal document which is the reflections of young people of the 21st century from various religious and cultural backgrounds. The Church views these reflections not as an empirical analysis of any other time in the past, but rather as an expression of where we are now, where we are headed and as an indicator of what she needs to do moving forward. Church feels that it is necessary for her to examine the way in which it thinks about and engages with young people in order to be an effective, relevant and life-giving guide throughout their lives.

This document is destined for the Synodal Fathers. This is to give the Bishops a compass, pointing towards a clearer understanding of young people: a navigational aid for the upcoming Bishops’ Synod. There are 15 parts in the document grouped into three main headers as, The Challenges and Opportunities of Young People in the World Today, Faith and Vocation, Discernment and Accompaniment and The Church’s Formative and Pastoral Activity.

At the beginning of this Pre-Synodal Meeting and in the spirit of this dialogue, Pope Francis brought to the conversation this verse from the Bible: “And afterwards, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions” (Joel 3:1).

Pope appoints presidents-delegate for Synod on young peopleHoly Father Pope Francis on July 14 appointed presidents-delegate for the Synod of Bishops.
