Sanmarg Assists & Participates in Emergency Gas
Pipeline Leak Mockdrill
A message was received in client’s control room at 6:00 am in morning that
there was a suspected leak in a gas pipeline. Consequently the Operation
In-charge of the concerned pipeline, Operation & Maintenance team, HSE
Department and the local Government Authorities of that area were
immediately informed and mobilized. The operation & maintenance team
reached in less than the 4 hours with the fully equipped emergency
response vehicle. The fire tender and Ambulance were also on standby at
the affected site.
The affected area was cordoned at a radius of 30 meter and information
was conveyed to the control room to isolate the leakage area by closing
the nearest upstream/ downstream remote operated valves. The line was
depressurized. Once the valves were closed, explosive limit (LPG has the
lower explosive limit of 5 and upper explosive limit of 15) of the gas was
checked with the help of LEL meter. The excavation work was only
performed when the LEL became zero and manual excavation had been
done, exposing the pipeline. When proper clearance for inserting the leak
clamp was given, pinhole area was identified and needle was inserted in
that area to arrest the leak. It was ensured that the needle was of the same
material of the pipeline to avoid the occurrence of localized corrosion.
After inserting the needle, leak clamp was placed and clamp screws were
tightened with the help of appropriate tools and tackles (non-sparking tools
were used). To check the integrity of tightened leak Clamp, pressure
testing was done in consultation with the control room and gas content was
continuously checked with the help of LEL meter. When all activities were
completed at the leakage location, the manual backfilling, compaction,
leveling and restoration were done as per the site condition. Control room
was informed to restart the transportation of gas. Manpower & equipment
were demobilized and a final report was generated.
