THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to CEO, the Director of Human Resources (Director) leads a team of 10 professionals, providing overall guidance and direction to the senior leadership team, human resources team and the operations group. Christenson Communities is looking for someone who is responsible for reshaping the HR function and processes of the company to better embrace a culture committed to coaching, mentoring and leadership. They will bring an operational mindset grounded in strong business-case fundamentals and be comfortable working simultaneously at both the strategic and hands-on levels on a small HR team. The Director of Human Resources will serve as a subject matter expert on all issues relating to HR policies, procedures, and best practices, and will work closely with department heads to solve business problems in a sustainable, root-cause manner.

As the ‘driver’ of a strong and healthy culture, the Director will look across the organization for opportunities to support and foster the growth of a high-functioning and cohesive team.

KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develops and implements strategic HR plans that integrate with company strategic plans.

• Supports all aspects of the operations, providing direction and support to the management team on HR matters, including organization development, performance management, employee relations, recruitment, and succession planning.

• Understands the day-to-day business of the site operations and the employee relations strategies that will support business objectives.

• Interprets and ensures the consistent application of our corporate policies and procedures.

• Manages, and facilitates relationships between frontline management and staff to ensure optimal productivity and high staff engagement.

• Plans and facilitates training programs with a continued emphasis on best-practice delivery.

• Participates in various operational, management, and team member meetings as required.

• Ensures legal and statutory compliance with all regulatory bodies, including but not limited to the governing Employment Standards/Labour Standards/Human Rights Acts, and applicable Occupational Health and Safety laws, etc.

• Measures results of HR programs and initiatives including retention, engagement, analysis, reporting on key HR metrics, and providing recommendations to address gaps or improvements.

• Provides coaching/development to the HR team.

• Interprets and ensures the consistent application of our corporate policies and procedures.

• Manages and facilitates relationships between frontline management and staff to ensure optimal productivity and high staff engagement.

• Plans and facilitates training programs with a continued emphasis on best-practice delivery.

• Identifies employment issues and trends and recommend improvements and training opportunities.

• Supports and assists change management activities among departments.

• Participates in various operational, management, and team member meetings as required.

• Actively supports, promotes and implements the mission, vision, philosophy and strategic directions of the organization.

• Promotes a safe work environment.

THE PERSON

The ideal candidate should be a seasoned HR professional who possesses well-rounded and deep subject matter expertise, combined with a proven track record of implementing people-related programs that directly impact the bottom line. The incumbent will have significant experience and a strong track record of success in leading broad human resource functions in a large and complex organization. Comfortable in a fast-paced environment, the Director should be a strategic leader who is experienced with the complexities of leading HR in an organization. Possessing a collaborative leadership style and refined interpersonal skills, they build engagement by fostering a respectful team environment, aligning the expertise that exists within the company, and building consistency throughout the organization. The Director should be resilient, decisive, and possess sufficient business acumen and strategic thinking capabilities to guide the organization through challenging change initiatives. Occupational Health and Safety is important, and Christenson Communities needs to ensure their facility is compliant with employment, labour, and occupational health and safety-related statutes, as well as legislation, codes and regulations.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:

• Post-secondary education (specialization in business or HR Management), a graduate degree and/or CPHR designation is preferred.

• Significant broad-based human resource experience with a strong track record leading a human resource team.

• Results oriented, willingness to embrace change and execute strategy. Proven ability to initiate activity, follow through and produce results.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality; mediation and conflict resolution experience is preferred.

• Knowledge of current and relevant HR legislation and provincial labour laws (AB).

• Active affiliation with appropriate HR networks and organizations and ongoing community involvement.

• Highly motivated and comfortable working independently.

• Ability to deal with conflicting issues, roadblocks, dependencies, and change demonstrating superior negotiation and conflict resolution skills. Demonstrated ability to take ownership of issues and ensure they are resolved.
