Christmas is approaching, and it is time to decorate the downtown area. We at Doe Enterprises

were discussing our decorations and thought how effective it would be if all the merchants on

our block worked together on our decorations, blending the entire block into a harmonious

whole. It would, of course, require all of us to cooperate in this matter, but any extra time and

expense is bound to be justified by the numbers of people it would pull into the areathroughout the festive season. Would you be interested in working with us on this project?

We will have a short meeting in the studio at the Art Shoppe on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m.

Please send a representative if you would like to participate. If this time is not convenient,

    please call me at 555-5555.

Engineering combines the fields of science and maths to solve real world problems that

improve the world around us.What really distinguishes an engineer is his ability to implement

ideas in a cost effective and practical approach. This ability to take a thought, or abstract idea,

and translate it into reality is what separates an engineer from other fields of science andmathematics.

Consider some things you use in your everyday life: Buildings, roads and bridges, vehicles

(cars, planes and boats), computers and other electronic devices.

Not a single one of them would exist without engineers! You wouldnt have been able to drive

to work, check your facebook status or even use the toilet this morning!

What Does A Typical Engineer Do?

Engineers are problem solvers, organisers, communicators, calculators and designers. They are

capable of clearly defining a problem and its relevant constraints (such as time, cost, etc.) and

providing a simple solution. A senior engineer will usually perform less technical work

(calculations and designs) but instead focus on managing a project or team of engineers.

How Different Engineers Work Together: Building A Tunnel

A civil engineer who specialises in structural design (structural engineer) would calculate the

size of the tunnel, how it is to be constructed (all of the stages) and what it is made of

(reinforced concrete, etc.). In order to provide clean air and remove as much of the vehicle

emissions as possible, a mechanical engineer is employed to design the ventilation system. The

mechanical engineer would plan for the amount of emissions that need to removed and the

process of removing them (for instance how many of a particular type of fan would be required

and where they are to be installed. Dont forget they also have to figure out where this air flows

to). An electrical engineer will design the lighting as well as any control systems for hazard

signs. In some cases, specialist disciplines such as environmental engineering are used to

conduct an investigation into the sustainability and environmental effects of building such a

    tunnel.

    Do Engineers Work As Individuals?

This answer is dependent on the specific project, job and even field that engineers work in.

Generally, all engineers work as part of a small or large team. A chemical engineer conducting

research and development may spend the majority of their time working independently in a lab

performing experiments and writing technical reports. On the other end of the spectrum, a civil

engineer in the construction industry may spend the majority of their time on-site, working

with foremen and tradesmen to develop buildings or infrastructure.

    Is Engineering Boring And Repetitive?

It is inevitable in any job, really, to have to perform dull and mundane tasks. Engineers are

required to check calculations (which are vital so nothing explodes or collapses!), read technical

papers and write technical reports. The true value found in engineering is the ability to combine

all tasks to create something greater (think 1 + 1 = 3!). This cant be achieved without a team

working together towards the same objective.

Consider that many other professions such as accounting, teaching and even business studies

all have their own mundane and repetitive tasksits the ability to create something special

like a two-hundred story skyscraper or a car that runs on electricity that makes engineeringstand out! Engineering provides you with the opportunity to contribute to society and leave a

lasting impression on the worldfollow in the footsteps of engineers like Thomas Edison

whose inventions are still used today!

MANILA, Jan. 20- The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Sunday

stressed the Department of Public Works and Highway (DPWH) should not only rehabilitate the

Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) but likewise expand its capacity to handle more vehicles.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino made the call as he said the rehabilitation plan of the DPWH

will be tackled during the Metro Manila Council(MMC)meeting scheduled this coming week.

The MMC is the policy-making arm of the MMDA and is composed of the 17 mayors of Metro

    Manila.

Tolentino said one way of increasing EDSA vehicle capacity would be the construction of

flyovers at strategic parts of the highway. However, it will be up to the DPWH what their plans

    are, he said.

The 12-lane highway, six for each portion (south and north-bound) is the busiest roadway in

Metro Manila and it passes through the cities of Caloocan, Quezon City, San Juan,

    Mandaluyong, Makati and Pasay.

DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson said the P3.4 billion rehabilitation project is now on its final

    stage of planning.

The project which is aimed at improving EDSA will involve the concrete re-blocking and asphalt

overlaying of certain portions of the highway from Balintawak to Roxas Boulevard.

For his part, Danilo Idos, director of the DPWH-Urban Road Projects Office, said they will begin

the rehabilitation of the 23-kilometer stretch of EDSA, from Roxas Boulevard to Monumento, in

    June this year.

He said they are still finalizing details on some aspects of the project and that it may take six

months before they implement the repairs.

Idos said that aside from the traffic management plan that would be submitted to the MMDA,

they would also need to seek the support of the Regional Development Council.

Meanwhile, Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay supported the call of MMDA for DPWH to

first discuss its plan to conduct a year-long repair of EDSA starting this June.

Binay said closing portions of EDSA for the repair should be taken up with the MMC considering

the huge impact it would cause to vehicular traffic.

We should all sit down and talk about this project, and then we come up with a decision. All

those affected, particularly the LGUs (local government units), should know what to do so we

would all be ready, Binay said.

The DPWH has been making selective repairs along EDSA, but it has never embarked on a major

rehabilitation of the primary thoroughfare in Metro Manila.

Idos said the planned rehabilitation of EDSA is part of the preparation for the Asia-Pacific

Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, which the Philippines will be hosting in 2015. (PNA)

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Land

Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) have agreed to extend the EDSA

express bus service by another month starting Thursday.

It would be recalled that the bus service started its pilot run between Fairview in Quezon City to

the Makati Central Business District through EDSA last March 23.

MMDA Chairm Francis Tolentino said the extension of the run intends to validate the

effectiveness of the service in terms of ridership.

We have agreed to extend to another one month. Binibigyan natin ng isang buwang

pagkakataon mapatunayan na tama ang express bus, said Tolentino.

Tolentino said the express bus service initially planned to deploy 55 buses but only managed to

deploy 50 for the earlier one-month pilot run.

Originally 55 buses ito, naging 50 so dapat patunayan na tinatanggap ng mamamayan, ng

    mananakay, he said.

Tolentino said the EDSA express bus service remains a viable alternative for riders of the

Metro Rail Transit (MRT) which recently has been experiencing technical problems.

So kung ito 'yung nakikita nating pamsamantalang tutulong sa kasiraan ng MRT, tutulungannatin, Tolentino said.

Tolentino admitted that the EDSA express bus service has been experiencing low ridership.

Kasi di pa masyadong kilala. Kasi di pa masyadong kilala, he said.

  • 7/23/2019 Sana Matanggap

    6/58

Tolentino said the DOTC intends to expand the coverage of the express bus service outside of

    EDSA.

Tolentino said that although he personally supports the idea of expanding the coverage of the

express bus service, the MMDA still needs further evaluation of the expansion proposal.

Dagdagan at i-expand sa buong Metro Manila ang gusto nila so ang sakin, ibigay muna ang

datos bakit kailangan. Yung datos kulang. Pero sa kahilingan na palawigin ang express bus sang

    ayon ako doon, he said.

Last month, the MMDA and the LTFRB launched the EDSA express bus service with 50 buses

ferrying passengers from Fairview to various stations along EDSA all the way to the Makati

central business district (CBD) and to the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

LTFRB Chair Winston Ginez said the specially tagged Express Connect buses would operatedaily from 4 am to 10 pm. Passengers intending to go to either to the Makati CBD and the Mall

of Asia simply need to board at the MMDAs dispatch terminal in Fairview and at various

    terminals of the three routes.

As with the pilot run last month, the express bus system for this month will run on three routes:

Route E1 (Fairview-Ortigas Avenue/Gil Puyat Avenue LRT station with 20 bus units), Route E2

(Fairview-Ayala Avenue/Gil Puyat Avenue LRT station with 10 bus units), and Route E3

(Fairview-Ayala Avenue MRT station-SM Mall of Asia rotunda with 20 bus units).

Ginez said passengers would have to buy their tickets from conductors inside the buses. He said

fares for the express buses would be the same as the ones now being charged by

    airconditioned buses.

Express buses are only allowed to stay for 20 seconds at the stations to pick-up or unload

    passengers.

Commuters can expect an express bus arriving at each station every five minutes (during peak

hours) and every 10 hours (non-peak hours).

Express buses running on the E1 route will have the following stations: Fairview, Litex/COA,

Batasan, Ortiagas, Megamall, Ayala Avenue. Gil Puyat LRT station and the Cultural Center of the

    Philippines parking area (Roxas Boulevard).

Express buses running on the E2 route will have the following stations: Fairview, Litex/COA,

Batasan, Ayala Avenue, Gil Puyat LRT station and the CPP parking area.

  • 7/23/2019 Sana Matanggap

    7/58

Express buses running on the E3 route meanwhile will have the following stations: Fairview,

Litex/COA, Batasan, Ayala MRT station and SM Mall of Asia rotunda.

Buses used by the EDSA express bus service are allowed by the MMDA to use EDSAs tunnels

    and flyovers.

The marked express buses that would also be using the lane nearest the center island would

also be exempted from number coding.

LTR 201240017 is the worlds longest letter ruling, 111 pages in PDF format. Not surprisingly, it

is a Section 355 ruling. It was issued three-and-a-half months after the original submission, with

those dates bridging Christmas and New Years Day. There were seven additional submissions

from the taxpayer in the interim. The release of the ruling was delayed for a couple of months.

As best as this reader can tell from spending a couple of hours with the ruling, there is not

groundbreaking legal news in it, but then you cant be sure about 111 pages. Probably the most

interesting points about the ruling are points that normally escape attention: (1) why did the

taxpayer go to the trouble and expense to get this ruling, and (2) why does the Chief Counsel

provide this sort of super service?

As to the super service, a top-flight law firm with a couple of partners working full time would

have been hard pressed to write this letter ruling from scratch in under a month. Of course, a

top-flight law firm or accounting firm must have written the submission from scratch. But how

did a couple of Chief Counsel attorneys write the ruling in the period given, assuming they did

    anything else at all?

The answer has to be that the taxpayer supplied a draft ruling in electronic format. Once the

ruling request was created and supplied on electronic format, this would have been fairly easy.

It also explains those 200-plus-page Tax Court opinions: the winning litigant commonly supplies

the facts, at least on disk.

So what does the Chief Counsel attorney look for? He or she can only hope to categorize the

proposed transactions by type and compare the representations made with the required

representations, which are fairly standardized. How about big picture issues? Presumably, the

taxpayers representatives sought a presubmission conference with Chief Counsel andexplained in big picture terms what the taxpayer was trying to accomplish.

    Facts

The group is topped by a foreign corporate public holding company (Parent). The group

includes 55 entities and two U.S. consolidated groups. The ruling describes three lines of

business. The ultimate object of the transactions is for Parent to spin-off Controlled 1 and

  • 7/23/2019 Sana Matanggap

    8/58

Controlled 2, one foreign and the other domestic, to its public shareholders. Each Controlled

corporation will own one of the three lines of business, each of which had been operated by

one of the two consolidated groups.

The numerous transactions leading up to the spin-off were grouped by the ruling into 34

groups, which comprise subgroups of 11 contributions plus distributions, eight liquidations, seven distributions, five reorganizations, one contribution and two other sets of transactions.

263 separate rulings were made. Each contribution plus distribution was a D reorganization.

There were three F reorganizations and two A reorganizations. Each liquidation was under

Section 332, and each distribution was under Section 355.

All three of the F reorganizations were accomplished by contributing stock of the target to a

new company and effecting a deemed liquidation under the check the box regulation. One of

the liquidations was effected by merger up, one by actual asset transfer, and six under the

    check-the-box regulation.

    Observations

This reader charted the 55 entities and had to tape an additional page to the bottom of the first

page to get them all in the picture. One fact that jumps out, in addition to the multiplication of

entities, is that this foreignheaded group contained not one, but two, domestic consolidated

groups. Unfortunately, this is not unusual. It usually results from either separate acquisitions or

a tendency of some foreign parents to create multiple separate U.S. subsidiaries, rather than

    subsidiaries within one group.

This tendency frequently leads to a scramble to combine consolidated groups, or add sistermembers to a consolidated group, when one of them develops losses. That can be done, but

having one U.S. consolidated group should be considered when the opportunity first presents

    itself.

A second observation is of the heavy use of the check-the-box regime, primarily involving

foreign entities. One wonders how the corporate world got along without it, and it is no wonder

that the genie cannot now be put back into the bottle. It is likely that no small part of the

reason for the explosion of spinoffs in recent years, as well as longer and longer rulings like this

one, is due to being able to shuffle entities around using check-the-box liquidations. Another

reason is the creation of the separate affiliated group (SAG) concept allowed to identify activebusinesses under Section 355(b).

Third, why did the taxpayer want this ruling and why does Chief Counsel sell these things at

$18,000 a pop? Assuming the guess abovethat no novel tax issues were involvedis correct,

it is likely that the Parent (a foreign corporation) wanted the ruling as audit insurance for its

  • 7/23/2019 Sana Matanggap

    9/58

domestic subsidiaries that engaged in a variety of liquidations, mergers and spinoffs facilitating

the ultimate double spins to the public shareholders.

The taxpayer was going to have to write all this down for its own benefit anyway, simply as

discipline to prove to itself that it was not creating structural, much less tax, problems for itself.

Also, its tax department was going to have to make sure that the transactions complied withfederal and foreign tax law. Being a foreign corporation, the Parent may not have a domestic

internal tax department, outside of its two domestic consolidated groups, which may not have

responsibility for other parts of the Parents group. Therefore, it is likely that the taxpayer was

forced to engage domestic outside counsel. Once that expense was incurred, and the factual

descriptions and legal analysis created, it was probably not much more expensive (maybe

another 25 percent of the legal costs?), plus the IRS $18,000 ruling fee, to obtain the ruling.

That ruling can be displayed to any IRS auditor who wants to know what happened and it is

highly unlikely the auditor would look behind the ruling.

What about the Chief Counsel? It turned this request around and issued a 111-page ruling in

three-anda- half months, over the Christmas and New Years periods, and found time to ask for

(or receive) seven supplemental letters from the taxpayer. Quite frankly, that would be a good

turnaround for someone spending full time on the project, and Chief Counsel is not so staffed

that attorneys can spend full time on any project (Corporate Division is now down 20 or more in

staff attorney positions from past years).

Putting the most favorable light on the subject, one can say this is good government at work for

you. Of the 109 letter rulings issued by the Corporate Division in the last year, about one

quarter have been Section 355 rulings. When the 35 9100 relief rulings are removed from the

set, the Section 355 rulings rise to more than one third, and they are surely the more

complicated rulings on average. Therefore, it is fair to say that a very substantial part of the

Corporate Divisions efforts are devoted to Section 355 rulings.

At a rate of $18,000 per ruling, these Section 355 rulings could have produced about half a

million dollars in revenue for the IRS over the last year. However, this does not nearly cover the

    cost.

    How Is the Transaction Planned?

The planning of this type of transaction surely does not start with Parent deciding it will

liquidate this subsidiary and merge that subsidiary. Rather it decides at a high level that it will

place two of its businesses in the hands of its shareholders, usually to increase the aggregate

share value. Then it identifies where those businesses sit within its corporate structure. Then it

turns the project over to the tax lawyers to figure out how to extract those businesses from the

structure with no tax cost and without creating ancillary problems.

  • 7/23/2019 Sana Matanggap

    10/58

There is no one way to accomplish the end result. That is why the key to transactions like these

is in the step-by-step planning of how to reach the end result. Such planning requires up-to-the-

minute knowledge of the state-of-the-art in corporate reorganization law and lore, as applied

    by the Chief Counsel.

MANILA, Philippines - The Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) directed operators of major toll roads toprepare expansion programs to prevent EDSA-like congestion in major expressways north and

    south of Metro Manila.

TRB executive director Edmundo Reyes Jr. told reporters that his agency directed operators of

theSouth Luzon Expressway (SLEx), North Luzon Expressway (NLEx),and the Manila-Cavite

Expressway (Cavitex) to prepare for high traffic volume by 2018.Metro Pacific Tollways Corp.

(MPTC)operates NLEx and Citra Metro Manila Tollways Corp. owns a stake in the company that

    holds the SLEx concession.

If we dont do anything, by 2018 certain stretches of NLEx and SLEx will be like EDSA. Cars keep

adding every year and we will need additional lanes, also space at the exits, also toll plazas and

tellers, structures, road widening, he said.

We ordered them to begin studying already their expansion plans. They still have right-of-way

and room to expand. If just widening, there will be bottlenecks at the toll plazas.

Reyes added that the government expects traffic volume on the toll roads to increase by 2% per

year over the next 5 years. He attributed this to "population growth, growing economy (and)

    better demographics."

Reyes said that there are 6 applications for toll fee adjustments pending before the TRB. He

said that the agency is reviewing the applications. However, he said there would be no toll fee

    increases before Holy Week.

The toll fee applications are for NLEx, SLEs, Cavitex, the Metro Manila Skyway, the Subic-Clark-

Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx) and the Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (Star). - Rappler.com

My most tragic memory of my seventeen year trip around the world is the Titanic sinking.

I'm 83 year old, but it is an hour [a moment] of my life that I will never forget. I was in Paris

when I've met, through a friend interpreter, Mrs George Stone, widow of an American,

president of the Bell Cie [it's a Canadian company, for what I know, anyway], the general

telephone Cie, who was looking for a person enjoying travelling to accompany her.

My lifelong dream was about to be fullfilled : I decided to go with her to America. I can't list...

all the countries where we have been.

In winter 1912, we were in Egypt; our travel went on to the Holy Land and ended in Jerusalem.

That unforgettable travel to Jesus' country came very close to be the last of them all.

    Page 2

Back in Europe, after having been in Paris and London, we boarded on the Titanic on April 10th

    1912.

It was Mrs Stone who tookgot the tickets in London, and told me, delighted, that we would

    board on the nicest liner.

The preceding nights, I had dreamed about death, ripped open trunks : a pressentiment,

maybe, made me tell [to myself] that I should not have choosen the Titanic.

The Commander Smith, even if he was about to retired, was choosen by the White Star Line to

drive this floating palace for hisits first travel; I can still weesee him, a handsome old man with

    a white beard.

It is himhe himself who helped me to get in the lifeboat.

During the four days that lasted the short-lived [fare?] of this splendid transatlantic liner, it wasall about celebrations, ceremonial dinners of royal luxury, the toiletsclothesdresses

[were] somptuoussumptuous, it was a display of shining jewels and of rivers of diamonds

    worthy of an oriental splendour.

edit: Jesus, people, thanks for the gold! ;)

wrong stairwell and returned to the deck halfway there.

Fortunately for me, for I would have never come back up again.

At this moment we witnessed unforgettable scenes where horror mixed with the most sublime

    heroism.

Women, still in evening gowns, some just out of bed, barely clothed, disheveled, distraught,

    scrambled for the boats.

Commander Smith yelled, "Women and children first".

Firm and calm, in the throng, officers and sailors were taking the women and children by the

arm and directing them towards the lifeboats.

    Page 6

Near me were two handsome elderly [people], Mr. and Mrs. Straus, proprietors of the great

store Macy's of New-York, she refused to go into the boat after having helped in her maid.

She put her arms around the neck of her husband, telling him

"We have been married 50 years, we have never left each other, I want to die with you."

Semi-conscious, in a neighboring boat was put the young wife of the millionaire J. Jacob Astor,

returning from their honeymoon voyage she was 20 years old, him 50. She latches on to him, he

was obliged to push her away with force.

The seamen in blue jackets, belts, and berets, struck up the beautiful hymn

    Closer to you my Lord

This is the cry of my faith,

    Closer to you.

The lifeboats were quickly brought down. By miracle Mrs. Stone and I found ourselves in the

same boat, where we were about thirty people.

The officer said Row strongly, you only have twenty five minutes to save your life.

I took the oars and rowed with so much energy that my hands were bleeding and my wrists

were paralyzed; because we had to hurry to escape the huge chasm that was going to be

opened when the Titanic would sink.

It was at this moment that I noticed that someone was hidden underneath me. I didnt have the

strength to reveal his presence. Ive never known who the man who saved his own life this way

    was.

As we were receding in an almost calm sea, weakly lit by the lantern that the officer was

holding, I didnt take my eyes off the shining Titanic.

Page 8Suddenly, there was darkness, whole and inscrutable, shouts, horrible yells, rose in the middle

of the creaks of the boat, then that was it.

Sometimes, 43 years after the tragedy, I still dream about it.

From the 2,229 passengers and crew, only 745 were saved.

After that night of terror, at first light, before the arrival of the Carpathia which would collect us

dazed, completely exhausted, our boat and some others went back to the scene of the tragedy.

The waters were calm and bare, and nothing could suggest that the sea giant was engulfed

    there.

Alone, in front of us, two cathedrals of ice which were pinkening under the first sunlight offered

    a spectacle of rare beauty.

    Page 9

When we were gathered in the dining room of the Carpathia, very painful scenes happened.

The young women were there without their husbands, mothers without their sons; a young

mother whom a wave had snatched her child from had gone insane, and mistaken for her child

a child that was presented to her.

Some survivors told the story of the horrific moments during which all human feelings were

opposed. There had been sublime gestures, a stranger undid his safety belt to give it to an old woman

who couldnt find a spot in any boat, and told her Youll pray for me.

The billionaire Benjamin Guggenheim after having helped the rescue of women and children

got dressed, a rose at his buttonhole, to die.

A pastor said the prayers for the missings.

    Page 10

The Carpathia which was headed for Genoa turned around to bring us back to New-York.

I won't talk about our arrival where I witnessed poignant scenes once again.

To Madame Ausein [???] in memory of her dear mother with whom I've lived this tragic disaster

during the night of April 14th to 15th 1912.

I just realized the people who left themselves behind knew with almost certainty they were

actually going to die. That must be a terrible thought, but also comforting, for I cannot see a

better way to die than such that allows others to live. This is in stark contrast to, say, war

heroism, although I do have a tremendous respect for veterans as well.

It must also have been different from say, not dodging a car or falling from a building whenyour instincts mostly take over, as it was a reasonably long process. They could actually make

that choice, and mostly with a clear mind.

That takes some guts, I can believe. I can see them, standing on deck, lifeboats receding intot

the darkness, the lights of the Titanic disappearing one by one into the inky depths below,

around them the people they are soon going to sound the depths of the ocean with.

Before this I have always considered Titanic tragedy almost... ridiculous. A thought which now

    puts me to great shame.

A few years ago, there was a study comparing the deaths from the Titanic to the deaths from

the RMS Lusitania, which sank only three years after the Titanic (1915) after being torpedoed

by a German u-boat. It was similar in size, passengers carried, and death toll (of the 1,949

passengers, only 636 survived)--but unlike the Titanic, it sank in only 18 minutes. Interestingly:

"Children on the Titanic had a 14.8% higher chance of surviving than adults and a person

accompanying a child was 19.6% more likely to survive than someone without a child. Being

female increased a passenger's chance of survival by more than 50%. In contrast, fit passengersaged 16 to 35 stood the greatest chance of surviving from the Lusitania disaster."

There was also no disparity in social class among survivors, unlike the Titanic.

The worst of human nature often brings out the best in short order. 20 men murdered

thousands on 9/11, but hundreds more charged into certain death on the off chance they could

help a stranger. Millions perished in the Holocaust, yet there were those who risked their's and

their families' lives to smuggle those selected for death to safety. And when an arrogant boast

of man's domination of nature was quashed in the North Atlantic, those willing to forfeit their

lives so others may live were present, still.

It would depend on what killed them. It would take less then 20 minutes to go unconscious if

they died by exposure in freezing water. They wouldn't feel any pain. After a few minutes

hypothermia would start to set in and their body would become numb to any physical pain.

If I were sure to die, I'd ignore the poem of Robert Frost and favor ice. It may take longer but in

the ice I die in my dreams, not in my nightmares.

Could anyone explain the best way to survive in freezing waters? I've heard many times that its

best to strip off wet clothes before surfacing (air temperatures will freeze the moisture), but

what about in the water? Could you preserve heat by bundling clothes around you? Is it best

not to move, just float and preserve energy?

    I'm with you, bub.

I saw this in/r/bestof,and I'm a big fan of those that pore over the runes and make sense of

things for those left behind, but then I saw your comment, and it spoke to me in a big way.

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, and there was a party of schoolkids that got lost in a snow

storm on a mountain expedition, and there was one of those, "form a line, use a stick to poke

the snow and uncover the corpses" expeditions that my family got involved in during the

outpouring of grief and support that happens.

I wish I could provide more concrete details, but my takeaway was learning aboutparadoxicalundressingwhen the hypothermia sets in, and your dying mind decides that you're entirely too

    warm there in the snow.

This broke my little brain in a big way when they were digging up dead naked children.

But as I aged, and gained a little perspective, I came to the conclusion that as deaths go, I would

entirely prefer that to drowning, or being nibbled by hungry beasts.

I don't know if you've ever got frostbite or been in extreme cold, but it definitely does hurt until

the numbness sets in. It feels like pins or knives stabbing you.

Hypothermia is probably one of the most painless ways to die. You're desperate for a nap, your

brain gets numb, there's some sort of goobetween you and the rest of the world.

The pain was probably much more psychological, before getting into the water, knowing that

    they would die.

I just took first aid/CPR training yesterday and we learned about hypothermia - the Red Cross

instructor said exactly the same thing about it being a painless way to die.

Most of the lower decks were sealed shortly after they realized there was trouble. The people

trapped down there died pretty terribly. Basically watching the freezing water rise until the

room was underwater and drowned in the freezing water. The people who made it to open

water would have suffered for few moments until they went into shock and froze. Those who

survived long enough for the lights to fail on the titanic were left in near total darkness and

surrounded by the moans of hundreds in the water. All in all it would be a pretty rough way to

    go out.

Terror would vary by the person, but most, I imagine were terrified. Anyone who went in the

water and survived said that it felt like being stabbed by hundreds of knives (until they went

numb), so unfortunately it was likely both terrifying and excruciating for those who died.

Americans (men, & maybe women) survived the titanic compared with their British

counterparts. This was because the British had a long time culture of chivalry, and were able to

stay calm in the face of certain death allowing them to support others onto the lifeboats and

accept their own tragic fate. Other nationalities, especially Americans, were less likely to do

this, they didn't have the same concepts of chivalry and death, thus they did whatever theycould to survive.

Edit 2: My post never stated anything more than an interesting article once said something like

this. It was not to start a nationality war. The old British behaviour was unique with a very

domesticated civilized code of honour, and i respect that. I never said that putting on a suit to

die was a good thing, nor did i say trying to survive is bad. Here is the

I would be interested to see this piece of research. If it only pertains to people on the Titanic

then that only sheds light on how "ridiculously rich people from the early 20th century react

during times of crisis", not so much (as you said) "how people from different nationalities

would react during a disaster", as that seems like a blanket statement for one disaster that

happened over a century ago (which, I think it goes without saying that every country and it's

people have changed quite a bit since then).

the billionair benjamin guggenheim's last message was"Tell my wife, if it should happen that my

secretary and I both go down, tell her I played the game out straight to the end. No woman

shall be left aboard this ship because Ben Guggenheim was a coward." he helped woman and

children into lifeboats then drank and glass of brandy and a cigar the the grand staircase as the

    ship went down.

There are only a select few people in my personal circle that I would be willing to die for, let

Maybe that sounds selfish...but thats just me I guess

the upper class passengers was much higher than that of the lower class passengers, men in the

upper class did not fare much better than men in the lower class.

The few men who survived the titanic were either crewmen (who were needed to guide the

passengers to safety once the boats were launched) or had snuck aboard lifeboats and hidden

where they would not be found and kicked out to die in the freezing water.

Presumably this man was crouched under her seat somehow, out of sight, and she feared that

if he were revealed the officer would cast him out of the boat into the water to die. I have no

idea if any men who got on the boats were actually kicked out.

Actually, part of the reason the earlier boats were launched half full was because many refused

to leave the perceived safety of the ship for the perceived danger of a small wooden boat in the

    frozen Atlantic.

However, the crew were aware the ships integrity WAS breached and knew they had fixed time

to launch the boats, and did so as quickly as possible.

This also leads to the inferred fact that even had the ship been stocked with enough boats,

many would have perished anyway, as it took nearly as long to launch the few they had as it did

for the ship to founder. In a scenario with enough boats for all, the Titanic goes down with most

of her lifeboats still firmly attached to the davits. Though it's possible that a few more could

    have been launched.

Casting men already in the boats out seems pointless to me, if the ship is already sinking, and

there's no way to get someone else in the boat, you might as well keep the men there.

Would he have been kicked off the lifeboat?

There's a difference between preventing a man from entering the lifeboat because women and

children go first, and kicking him off a lifeboat into the ocean, which wouldn't help save anymore women and children and would effectively be cold-blooded murder.
