I’m very proud to present to you the first issue of the San Marcos Outlook! I believe in this publication because in this Internet age we are at risk of losing our sense of hometown community and identity. The San Marcos Outlook seeks to help restore this balance and help you get acquainted - or re-acquainted - with your hometown.

Our magazine is all informative columns written by local people. Each month I hope you will learn something new and interesting that makes you want to explore our community.

I am honored to be the publisher of this unique publication. I’m a lifetime resident of this area, born in Austin, grew up in Wimberley, and citizen of San Marcos since I went to Texas State University (then SWT). I have been a columnist for the sister publications Wimberley Valley News & Views and the Dripping Springs Outlook, and have been a graphics designer and project manager for Pithy Productions Inc.

I look forward to getting to know you. I believe in the importance of the local publication now, more than ever. Please join me in making it happen in our hometown.

Kerry Watson founded Pithy Productions Inc. in Wimberley in 1999, a web design & consulting firm that specializes in ecommerce, or helping small businesses sell on the Internet. Kerry can be reached at 877-605-8327 or on the web at www.pithyproductions.com.

WOW them with the Web!* Look BIG even if your company is not, with a small, but

professionally designed website. But be sure to tell your designer you want to save money by updating the site yourself.

* If your nephew is going to build a website for you for free, remember the six months it takes him are missed business opportunities.

* If you don’t think you can afford an expensive website, some web design companies offer a hosting and design combo for a flat monthly fee. To find out if they do, just ask!

How can small businesses WOW customersin difficult times? By working smarter, not harder! There are thousands of ways to save money and time. Here are just a few:

* Notice what questions phone callers ask over and over, and put them on your website.

* Of course post your hours and days you are open on your website. It won’t keep everyone from calling you, but over time it will cut down on calls.

* Add your website address to everything - business cards, brochures, flyers, advertisements. Get in the habit of putting things on your website that people constantly need so they have it 24/7.

* Get a free local business phone number by using Skype internet telephone, and get free or almost-free long distance. You need a high speed internet connection for it to work well.

* Get voicemails delivered to your email box, a fancy virtual PBX phone system with extensions and an 800# for pennies per day with GotVMail.com.

* Print your postage online and call for carrier pickup to avoid going to the post office ever again with Stamps.com.

* Most small businesses start with their own homemade website because they have to - the owner wears all hats. Don’t be embarassed about it. Make it very functional and practical. Hand off the hat when you can.

Don’t make me think!

Chances are that you’ve already used a product today that has an herbal ingredient. Many soaps use lavender for scent. Some fibers are dyed using herbs. Aspirin is derived from a plant and some experts say that more than 25 percent of drugs currently on the market contain plant extracts.

So what is an herb, anyway? Herbs are plants that don’t have a woody

stem and they die back to the ground each winter, leaving only the root system alive. So what is the difference between herbs and spices? Herbs are usually fresh or dried leaves while spices are the seeds, roots, fruits, flowers or bark. Herbs tend to have a milder flavor and spices are usually stronger and more pungent.

Herbs can be grown both indoors and out, as long as they have adequate lighting. You can even establish a small one in an empty flower pot. Mint, parsley, basil, and oregano are fairly hardy plants that do not need a lot of attention.

Unfortunately, the convenience of fast food has caused some folks to forget the value of these tiny, green plants in their everyday lives. Herbs can provide you with great flavor and little to no calories.

Here at Central Texas Medical Center, we planted an herb garden in partnership with the Texas Hill Country School. The garden is located in the courtyard just outside of the cafeteria. Visitors are encouraged to stop by and visit or get inspired. The Hill Country School students took part in planting the garden and have been tending to it as needed. CTMC chefs are taking advantage of the garden and using the organically grown herbs to garnish and flavor meals for patients and visitors.

Here’s a guide to herbs/spices and foods that work hand in hand. Beef – bay leaves, sage, thyme. Chicken – rosemary, oregano, tarragon. Fish – dill, marjoram, paprika. Carrots – cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves. Potatoes – garlic, parsley, onion. Summer squash – curry powder, sage, rosemary.

If herb gardening interests you, start small and put a few plants in pots. Your local garden center can help you get started. Before you know it you will be sharing your new seasonings with neighbors and friends. Enjoy!

Have you Herb?

Ask the Doctor

Dr. Eric Adelman is a Board Certified Dermatologist and is current-ly the only Fellowship-trained Mohs skin cancer surgeon practicing in Hays County.

by Dr. Eric Adelman

Do you have scaling spots, bleeding spots, or dark irregular shaped moles on your body? If so, you may have developed a skin cancer.

There are over a million cases of skin cancer diagnosed each year. There are three basic kinds: basal cell, squamous, and malignant melanoma (the most serious). The ABCDs of melanoma can help identify melanoma: Asymmetry,

Border irregularity, Color (darkish colors but not always), and/or an increased Diameter of the spot.

Prognosis for any skin cancer is good if treated early. If not, it may destroy skin tissue locally and in worse case scenarios can metastasize to organs. The incidence or detection of skin cancers has risen dramatically in the last 20 years. Regular screening by an experienced dermatologist is recommended to prevent and treat cancers.

Today, the most effective treatment for removal of most skin cancers on the head and neck is the Mohs method, developed by Dr. Frederic Mohs.

The Mohs method is precise, and has a cure rate of 99% for first-time skin cancers, and 95%-97% for skin cancers that have recurred. Compare this with a cure rate of as low as 50% for recurrent cancers treated by methods such as simple excision, electro-desiccation and curettage, cryotherapy, or freezing.

Today, Mohs surgery is done under local anesthesia in the office. It is done in three steps:

1) Surgical removal of a thin layer of tissue around the visible skin cancer;

2) Processing of the tissue for microscopic evaluation; and3) Examination of the outside edges of the excised tissue

layer under the microscope to see if there are additional skin cancer cells.

These first three steps can be repeated if there are further roots of the skin cancer to be removed. If not, the surgeon will close the area with sutures, allow the wound to heal by itself, or perform a skin graft. Although Mohs micrographic surgery is time-consuming and requires specialized training, personnel, and equipment, it is extremely effective.

No one is certain of all the causes of skin cancer, but several causes or factors include: excessive sun exposure, fair skin, blue eyes, old burn scars, X-ray therapy, and certain medicines.

What You Need to Know For a Whiter Smileby Dr. DeAnna Dean

Today, a bright smile is a top dental priority for most people. There are various products and procedures to help brighten your smile including bleaching, whitening toothpastes, and porcelain crowns or veneers. This article discusses the 3 main bleaching methods.

Dentist in- office bleaching is one of the quickest ways to whiten your teeth. The dentist isolates and protects your gums,

lips, and inside of your mouth. The bleaching agent is applied to the teeth, and a light source is then used to activate the bleaching agent. The biggest advantage of this procedure is that teeth are whitened that day. The disadvantage to other bleaching systems is that it is more costly.

Dentist-supervised at home bleaching is probably the most popular bleaching method. The dentist makes a custom mouth tray from a mold of the teeth. The patient uses the trays and bleaching agent at home, each night for several weeks. A few brief follow-up appointments are scheduled with the dentist to monitor progress.

Over-the-counter systems can be purchased at the local store, by mail, or the internet. They are similar to dentist-supervised kits, using trays or strips. These are “one size fits all”, so may not fit properly. Consequently, the patient risks gum irritation or possibly ingesting the bleaching agent. In addition, the bleaching agent is typically less powerful than that used by dentists, so results may

be less dramatic. If you are thinking about whitening your teeth, remember the

importance of education and evaluation by a dentist. It is very important to follow directions. When properly administered, bleaching side-effects are minimal, with the most common being transient sensitivity and gingival irritation. Your dentist can help address these issues. In addition, bleaching may not correct all types of staining or discoloration. For example, yellowish-hued teeth tend to bleach very well. On the other hand, brownish-hued teeth bleach less well and grayish-colored teeth may not bleach well at all. In those cases, patients may want to consider other cosmetic options such as porcelain crowns or veneers. Dr. DeAnna Dean is an honors graduate of the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. She has practiced for several years, and recently opened Dean Dental in San Marcos. Dean Den-tal is located on 1920 Corporate Dr. Ste. 105A, San Marcos, TX 78666. 512-353-2727 www.dean-dental.com

It’s Time to SAVE, America!by Ruben Ruiz Jr.

There is no doubt that today’s economic recession is having a dramatic effect on the lives of ALL Americans everywhere. What we do not realize however, is the secret to success, wealth and freedom from debt is already in our grasp. Every time we cash a paycheck we are given an instrumental tool in making our financial goals a reality. It’s time to start utilizing these tools.

It’s time to SAVE, America! The trouble America faces today, the desperate situation that

led to the economic recession plaguing the country and its citizens from coast to coast, is all based on debt.

The average American is several thousands of dollars in debt. They are buying homes, cars, appliances, and furniture on credit, signing on the dotted line for long - term payment plans. This system was unheard of a few short centuries ago when people either had money for the things they needed or they did without.

It’s time to get back to those days.We have more savings and investment opportunities today than

ever before yet most Americans are not taking advantage of them. Why? As business mentor Brian Tracy stated, “Economists say the inability to delay gratification is a primary predictor of economic failure in life.”

The inability to delay gratification….How often have we heard people say, “I want what I want and I want it now!”? The desire

for instant gratification and the belief that we are entitled to it is slowly driving this country deeper into financial crisis.

Consider this: In 1960 the average American saved at least ten percent of their income. Today many people live paycheck to paycheck and most are happy to have two or three hundred dollars in their savings account. Our country, number one in the savings market five short decades ago, is now in last place among the industrialized nations.

How did that happen? Credit and debt. Is there a magical secret that will solve all of our financial woes and put us on the fast track to financial independence actual wealth? The answer is yes!

Ruben Ruiz Jr., MSFS, CLU, ChFC, CSA, RFC is President and CEO of Money Concepts Financial Planning Centres in San Marcos and San Antonio, Texas and The Ruiz Financial Group, LLC. He has been in the financial industry since 1974 and is the award-winning author of “The Richest Latino in America.”

by Zack Ross

Zack Ross is an award winning tattoo artist and the owner of No Surrender Studios [formerly Live Electric Studios] just South of the Square at 142 S. LBJ. Zack worked for 5 years in the San Diego area before moving to Texas in early 2008. Zack welcomes the op-portunity to answer your tattooing questions and help guide you to the perfect tattoo. Cell: 512-626-5919; Shop: 512-754-9341.

Tattooing has come a long way in the past twenty years. Tattoos have become more socially acceptable as tattooing has become recognized as an art form. With the growing demand for tattoos, the industry has become saturated with artists. Understanding these changes, once you have made the decision to get a tattoo, how will you know where to go and what artist to choose?

Selecting the Artist: All artists are not created equal. The first step in choosing an artist is to look at his\her portfolio. Check for well drawn, original designs, vibrant colors, clean outlines, smooth shading, and color transitions. A referral from someone you know or seeing tattoo work that you admire can lead you to the right artist. Walk in with a good idea of what you want so the artist can trans-form your ideas into a custom drawing that far exceeds your initial expectations. Your artist should be enthusiastic, professional, and enjoy his\her craft. Cheap tattoos are not good, and good tattoos are not cheap. A talented artist usually charges $100/hour or more.

Selecting the Shop: Cleanliness rules. The shop should be reg-istered with the Texas Health Department. Ask the shop about their sterilization process. Do they keep a record of autoclave spore tests? Do they use new needles for each tattoo? Do they avoid cross-con-tamination of pigments by using disposable ink caps? Does the shop look clean? A good artist will not compromise his\her integrity by working in a dirty, unsafe environment.

Selecting the Tattoo: Tattoos are only limited by your imagi-nation. There are many different genres: black and grey, color, traditional, new school, oriental, tribal, photorealism, and even surrealism. Most good artists specialize in one or more of these styles. Find the one that best suits you. There are many reasons that you might get a tattoo. Whether it is a portrait to remember a loved one or famous person, a meaningful message, or simply a beautiful piece of art to adorn your body, there is a tattoo for you.

Do your research and choose your artist wisely. Tattoos are forever.

An Introduction to the Culture of Skatingby Geoffrey Quick

If you are interested in learning more you can find everything you will need at Texas Skate Boards & Apparel. Texas Skate is a locally owned and operated skate shop here in San Marcos TX. The doors opened on Oct.1 2008. Owners, Cody Hobbs and Geoffrey Quick, are both Texas State University alumni who just could not leave San Marcos.

From the time skateboards were in-vented in the 1950’s they have played a role in American society. In 1970 the polyurethane wheel was introduced and skateboarding stepped out of the Cali-fornia surf sub-culture and made its de-but into mainstream American culture.

Ever since skateboarding exploded onto the scene it has done only one thing and that is grow! It has matured from an

outcast group of kids to a legitimate professional sport. This has only been possible because the sport has been able to change and adapt to its surroundings. Now you can find all different types of boards and styles of riding. The options are almost limitless.

You can see the influence that skating has had through-out all of American culture even outside the skate park. Skate in-fluenced clothing and shoes have become some of the best selling items. Clothing companies such as KR3W, Neff Headwear, and Zoo York can be seen even on people who do not skate. Also shoe companies such as Globe, Dekline, and Es have made their way to mainstream manufacturing skate shoes.

There are many different styles of boards with varied lengths widths shapes depending on the style of riding of the individual. One of the fastest growing trends in skating today is long boarding.

This is a style of skating that is very surf influenced and goes back to the roots of skating. Riders tend to use longer boards and ride huge hills and ditches just like a concrete wave. Some riders look for speed where others prefer hard carving turns.

So whether you’re interested in skating for the speed, the preci-sion, or even the fashion...get out and visit your local skate shop to fulfill your need for all things skate.

Teresa Litton is the owner of Bada Bling! located at 226 N LBJ. Bada Bling is celebrating its 1 year anniversary this month. Shop Consignment and Put your Budget on a DIET!

In today’s economy everyone is wondering how they can save a little money or stretch their dollar a little further. Shop Consignment! You can get great bargains on items that are big name brands in excellent, sometimes even new condition. Consignment shops can be found in all flavors and styles, whether offering furniture and household items, clothing, men’s sporting goods, or children’s toys. Often there are racks

of clothing items in a consignment store that still have the tags on them from the department stores along with other racks of the super marked down inventory. Imagine the money you could save by shopping consignment!

Consigners bring their used wares to a shop, where the owner inspects the items for quality, then prices and displays the selected merchandise. If the item sells within a certain time period, the consigner and shop owner split the proceeds on a percentage basis, with the percentage split varying. If an item doesn’t sell, it is returned to the owner, or perhaps given to charity. It’s a great way to generate extra cash for items that are hanging in your closet or laying around the house! Imagine the extra money you could make by selling items on consignment! Selling through consignment shops is a great new approach to finding a way to fund all those little things in life that add up over the course of the year or even just to add to your savings plan.

If you’re looking for ways to make ends meet and a quick way to make money, consider consigning the clothes in your closet that you no longer use. Clothing consignment shops make getting rid of your unwanted clothes simple and convenient. The shop owner will review your clothes in front of you and provide you her/his insight in their ability to sell the items you brought in for resale. Remember that even if your clothes have never been worn before, people shopping at consignment shops are looking for great deals. You can’t expect to get retail prices. All the items accepted are priced very affordably before being placed on display. Clothing, styles vary from casual to formal for every occasion.

High-end or low, consignment shops offer a recession-era alternative to pricey malls.

by Connie UlmerWhat is a Health Savings Account (HSA) ?

A Health Savings Account (HSA) is a tax advantaged savings account for health care expenses. This type of account is only available to qualified health plan members. A qualified health plan is one that has a high deductible, minimum $1250 for an individual, $2500 for a family, and does not offer the typical copays associated with traditional health plans. Premiums for a qualified health plan are usually less than those you would pay for traditional

health insurance. The money you save with the reduced insurance premium can be deposited into the HSA where it will earn interest, tax deferred. You may then use money from this account to pay your healthcare expenses. Any funds you withdraw from the ac-count for qualified expenses are tax free. As long as you only use those funds for qualified health expenses, the money from your HSA is not taxed.

Congress established HSAs in 2003 with the goal of encourag-ing people to save for medical expenses in the later years of life. An individual may deposit up to $3000 in their account for 2009 and a family may deposit $5950. Once you reach age 55 you may make additional contributions each year; $1000 for 2009. The IRS sets guidelines for deposits and what qualifies an insurance plan as eligible for an HSA. They have also established guidelines for what

expenses are qualified as tax free. Most medical expenses, including dental and vision, are qualified expenses. Long Term Care expense can also be a qualified expense.

Each year you own an HSA, the money you leave in that account grows with interest providing funds for future health expenses and care in the later years of life. Qualified health plan members may make HSA contributions up to age 65. Once you reach age 65 you may no longer make contributions to the account but you may con-tinue to use the HSA funds tax free for qualified expenses.

Next month I’ll give a detailed example of enrolling in and using a traditional health plan versus an HSA qualified health plan.

Senior Living Options in Today’s Marketby Meghan Ford

Among the many senior housing options available, 55+ independent living provides the greatest amount of independence & freedom. One of the most common miscon-ceptions about 55+ senior living is that they are nursing or assisted living type facilities. The truth is 55+ Independent Living offers the resident a community of peers with similar interests while allowing them to be totally self-sufficient.

Independent senior living communities are popping up all over the country including apartment communi-ties, condominiums, mobile home parks, and even neighborhoods. Typically the benefits of these communities include an age limit of either 55+ or 62+, low maintenance, resort style amenities, planned social activities, exercise classes, social clubs and a general sense of community. To some seniors the largest benefit is downsizing from a large home to a smaller, compact apartment or home that is easy to care for.

There are several different categories of independent senior living.

The most common is your high dollar retirement communities. Typically these communities have apartments available to lease, provide meal plans for those that desire it, transportation to offsite community events or medical appointments, and personal fitness trainers.

Affordable independent senior communities also offer apartment homes to lease. In most cases these communities offer just as many amenities and activities as the high dollar communities, but individu-als must qualify under certain income guidelines. Condos, mobile homes, and homes in senior specific neighborhoods are purchased by the individual, who is also responsible for homeowner’s dues that pay for the social gatherings and amenities.

Because of the tremendous flexibility in these communities, in-dependent senior living is becoming the most popular way to spend retirement for the growing number of seniors in the United States.

Where have all the loans gone…?Markets across the country reported

decreases in sales as of Q4 of 2008, but have recently shown change in a positive direction. National Sales figures for Real Estate showed a 5% increase last quarter, indicating that Buyers are taking advantage of the current market conditions. Many in-vestors who own real estate see this trough in the market as a window of opportunity.

So, you own a home and would like to sell it but don’t have much equity, or would like to hold on to what equity is still

there. You have tried to list it with a real estate agent and get noth-ing but “low ball” offers or unqualified Buyers in the eyes of their “Lender”. Have you ever considered Seller Financing…? It is a simple method of relieving yourself of another mortgage liability by selling the property to someone who might normally be a tenant. Most Sellers will require a deposit which can vary greatly depending on what type of debt service, if any, they have on the property. A good starting point is 5%-10% of the Sales Price or Loan Amount or 12-24 months of PITI (Principal, Interest, Taxes, and Insurance.) Seller Financing is an excellent alternative to conventional loans for Buyers, which prevents the Seller from being a Landlord and having to deal with maintenance and repairs.

An accurate loan application should include current residence and employment information, as well as references. The prospec-tive “Lender”/Seller should also verify all the information that is provided by the prospective Buyer is true and correct. If there is a note or mortgage on the property, you must verify that your loan is assumable. Real Estate/Property Investors must be willing to take on extra calculated risks in order to increase their bottom line. By owning mortgage notes and effectively creating positive cash flow as net income from rental properties, you can create a stream of Residual income that is a major key to long-lasting success.

What Exactly IS a Chamber of Commerceby Phyllis Snodgrass A Chamber of Commerce is a local

association of business people orga-nized to promote the welfare of their community, especially its commercial interests. Each Chamber of commerce usually has an elected board of direc-tors, and its work is done through com-mittees comprised of members of the organization.

The first known use of the name “Chamber of Commerce” was in France in 1599. The idea spread rapidly through Europe. Even today, nearly every Euro-

pean city has a Chamber of Commerce. However, the European Chamber is strictly a board of trade and membership usually a requirement for doing business. In America, our Chambers of Commerce are on a strictly voluntary basis. Remember – we are the country that threw the tea overboard because we did not want “imposed taxes”.

The first Chamber of Commerce in the United States was formed in New York in 1768. Today, there are thousands of local Chambers of Commerce, many State Chambers, and the Chamber of Commerce of the United States – the U.S. Chamber. The San Marcos Chamber of Commerce was formed in 1903 to serve the community of San Marcos.

Chambers are the voice of the business community that often defines the success and progress of any community. Who got to-gether and decided to bring railroads to communities in the 1800’s – bringing commerce and opportunity to its citizenry? The busi-

ness community. Who insisted that roads and schools be built? The business community. Who organized the community leadership development program? The Chamber of Commerce. Go back in history and look at many of the milestones that have defined the community and provided opportunity for all that live there, and it all started with the local Chamber of Commerce .

San Marcos is no different. Besides handing out maps and newcomer packets, visitor information and schedules of events, the Chamber serves as the place where great business minds come together to discuss the issues of the day, work on solutions to prob-lems and forge a path to the future. The Chamber is the place where you will find a group of staff and volunteers, “doing the things that other people think just happen.”

More Relaxing Than a Screensaver

Frenetic lifestyles have become the norm in today’s society. Eight hour work days are becoming atypical in the corporate world. With fast paced lifestyles comes increased stress. What is a good way to appease stressors?

A confirmed method for soothing stress is to stare serenely into an aquarium. The calming sound and the peaceful motion of its inhabitants have proven to lower blood pressure and calm nerves. Studies

have confirmed that watching aquarium fish soothes children that suffer from hyperactivity. Dental patients who were allowed to view an aquarium prior to treatment experienced the same benefits as patients who underwent hypnosis. They also required less pain medication after having watched aquarium fish in the office prior to treatment. Studies have also shown that patients with Alzheimer’s experience health benefits from viewing aquarium fish.

The evident benefits of aquariums have sparked a trend in aquarium purchases for schools, doctor’s offices, and large corporations. The addition of an aquarium creates a serene environment that calms school aged children and increases productivity and creative thinking among corporate executives. This is the reason why aquariums can play an important role when placed in high-stress environments. However, your personal environment does not have to be stressful in order to enjoy aquariums.

Modern designs of today’s acrylic aquariums and aquarium stands blend tastefully into existing décor. Handcrafted acrylic aquariums allow for the most clarity of any aquarium on the market, so you can be assured you will have the finest view available. Aquarium stand are built to from traditional oak to exotic ebony to satisfy all tastes. Aquarium Mantenance company are out there with the know-how and the resources to build and maintain the perfect aquarium for you.

In summary, aquariums can help to:• Lower stress levels and blood pressure thereby increasing

productivity • Relax individuals, especially those who work or visit stressful

environments • Provide a point of interest when placed in homes, shops and

offices etc.

Hamburger Wine?

Spring! Backyards and Bar-B-Ques. Grilled burgers, fish and everything in be-tween. The backyard domain traditionally ruled by beer and Margaritas is slowly being invaded by wine. I like a good beer with a burger especially with the wide range of great brews available these days. However, you wouldn’t think twice about opening a great Claret or Cabernet Savignon with a Filet Mignon, so why change just because

the meat is ground up? A burger with all the fixings is not a dish for a whimpy wine. You want a big meaty California red or rich, inky Malbec from South America to tackle that stack of meat. What’s that you say? Can’t do warm red wine in the Texas sun? When we talk about serving red wine at room temperature, nobody was talk-ing about room temperature in Texas! So chill those reds down to fifty five degrees or so, they will be more refreshing. Red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Tempranillo and Shiraz (Syrah) are great wines with grilled red meat. Everything from Steak or ribs to Fajitas will work, just remember with spicier meat stay away from the heavy oaked wines or you’ll think you’ve set your mouth on fire. For lighter meats, pork, chicken or fish pay attention to the sauce or seasoning and select the wine accordingly. Sauce

and seasoning rules the dish. Sangiovese, Pinot Noir or Grenache for lighter red wines. Make room in the beer cooler for Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Albarino or even Champagne or Prosecco as a fun alternative. Light, crisp and cold (sounds like a beer ad) make these backyard favorites. Are you marinating that meat or fish? Add some of the wine you’ll be serving to the marinade, it will marry the dish to the wine and help tenderize the meat.

So if I’m driving by and smell the grill, I just might knock on the door. Don’t worry, I’ll bring the wine.

Kirk Painter is a licensed Physical Therapist and a co-owner of Physical Therapy and Rehab Concepts (PTRC). Kirk is clinic di-rector of the San Marcos location. He uses the Wii Fit program on his patients for balance and strength. Kirk is a certified McKenzie spine specialist as well.

Nintendo Wii for Physical Therapy

The Nintendo Wii (pronounced like “whee!”) video game system has become wildly popular since it was released way back in 2006, impressing audiences with it’s sci-fi like interactive sports games. Recently the medical field has begun to use the Wii for physical therapy application, and they’re finding out that the Wii can be

very beneficial for physical therapy patients for many reasons. With the introduction of the Wii FIT component users receive a

balance platform that does everything from tell you your weight and body mass index to giving you second-by-second feedback on how balanced you carry your body weight. Balance is a very important factor in physical therapy, and the Wii can now tell you whether you lean slightly forward or even if you put more weight on one your right or your left leg.

The way Wii makes these exercises fun is it gives the patient a task on screen. For example the patient will have to hold their core muscles tight while shifting their center of gravity to move the virtual platform on the screen. The goal is to get a ball to drop in the hole so the patient can advance to the next level in the game.

Not only is the Wii a good tool for your balance, but it also makes physical therapy fun! The usual stretching and lifting exercises that help the injured regain strength can be painful, repetitive and a little bit boring. Using the game console’s unique, motion-sensitive controller, Wii games require body movements similar to traditional

therapy exercises. Patients become so engrossed mentally they al-most don’t notice how rigorously they are using their bodies.

Because of the fun factor with the Wii therapy, treatment centers have noticed an increase in patient compliance. Patients are getting improved endurance, strength, coordination…all the while they feel like they are just playing a game. Patients eagerly anticipate their next treatment sessions, and actively formulate their transition to a home-based program…which is another benefit of the Wii, after patients learn the best technique for getting their bodies back into working order, they can purchase the Wii FIT system for a reason-able price and continue the therapy at home.

by Kate Conroy Spring is in the AirDuring spring, the season of renewal,

Mother Nature makes sure her Creatures shed their winter togs and don their spring finery. We, her finest creation, need to put our best face forward this Spring.

Since the skin is the largest organ in our bodies and is designed to cover and protect our internal organs from drying and from being invaded by foreign pathogens; we should consider the importance of taking

care of it. The first step is to determine your individual skin type. Once this is done then you can make an educated decision about how to protect your skin. Let’s look at the four basic skin types: dry, normal, oily and combination; and the characteristics to look for in each.

If you have Dry Skin, you will generally have small pores and a dull finish. Your face will have little or no superficial oil or shine. To put YOUR best face forward this spring, use a gentle cleanser, soften and lubricate to restore needed moisture and help reduce flakiness.

Normal Skin is a little easier to recognize. You will be wearing a smooth textured face with a balance of oil and moisture. Since you seldom get blemishes or clogged pores, you will need to cleanse daily to refine and maintain your healthy, radiant skin.

If you have Oily Skin, throughout the winter you have probably been plagued with blemishes and clogged pores due to excess oil

produced by sebaceous glands. Your skin can appear greasy and shiny even after you’ve cleansed it. Your aim for spring is to con-trol surface oiliness giving your pores a deep cleansing to remove impurities and oily buildup.

The last group, Combination Skin types, is sometimes most difficult to spot. Your skin is almost Normal, but has a few Oily attributes. You have some texture to your skin, and you suffer with the oily T-Zone difficulties. Beneath your Easter bonnet, you need to hydrate the dry areas of your face and control the oil that may trouble you across the forehead, nose and chin. Happy Spring!

My New BFFby Mary Nieder

I could tell when she checked into the front desk that morning for her services that she was not use to this type of service at all, of others waiting on her needs, asking her what she wanted to drink. No, she was one who waited on others, spent a lifetime car-ing for others. She removed a gift certificate from her wallet and said “A gift from my grandson, he’s three.’ I could see the sparkle in her eye as she said “my grandson.”

“I told them they were too extravagant giving an old woman such a decadent gift” she said. I remember thinking of how she

said the word decadent and my minds eye went to an image of something beautiful. I smiled at her. Then she was escorted to the back of the spa to begin her special day.

The woman had been in the spa most of the day doing what woman do in spas; a Swedish massage, a facial, an aromatic pine-apple mango body scrub.

Decadent was the word she used to describe these. She even had a fabulous lunch.

Through the course of the day I had forgotten she was here so when she came up to the front to check out I immediately smiled while shaking my head and laughed. She was absolutely glowing. Her skin looked dewy.

She laughed back. “I know. I know she said. I can’t believe it either! I feel like a

new woman. I even set a few goals and promises to myself back there while having my services.”

Of course I couldn’t wait to ask “What goals?”She without hesitation replied, ‘To take care of my best friend

better, to enjoy sunsets more with my best friend , learn to eat healthier with my best friend.”

At this we both laughed. “Where is your best friend? Why didn’t she come along with

you to enjoy your special day?” At which she replied “I just made a best friend today. ME!”Friend, have you connected with your inner Best Friend yet?
