SPARTANS KEEP HOME RECORD PERFECT WITH WIN OVER UTAH STATEAfter its 62-58 win over Utah State (12/31), the San José State has run its home record to 6-0 on the season. The last time the Spartans have gone this far into the season with out dropping a game at home was the 7-0 start in 2002-03. The best home record by a Spartan team came in the 1978-79 season. That year the team completed the regular season with out losing a game on its home court, going 14-0.

NEW YEARS EVE A CELEBRATION FOR SPARTANSWith its 62-58 win over Utah State, San José State finally celebrated its first victory on New Year’s Eve on its fourth attempt. In its three previous attempts the Spartans were 0-3. On 12/13/1985 they lost at Santa Clara 60-45. It was a 61-47 loss to Brown on 12/31/11 and a 57-54 defeat by UTSA on 12/31/12.

WEST NAMED MOUNTAIN WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEKRachol West (So., F, Bakersfield, Calif.) has earned the Mountain West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honor for games played from December 22-28.

West, a sophomore out of Garces Memorial High School in Bakersfield, Calif., led the Spartans with a career-high 19 points in a 102-94 defeat of Sacramento State last Monday.

In 19 minutes off the bench, West went 7-for-13 from the floor (53.8 percent) including 5-for-8 (62.5 percent) from beyond the three-point line. She also grabbed five rebounds, dished out one assists and made one steal in the win.

Trailing 53-43 at the half, the team opened the second period with a 16-5 run capped by a three-pointer by West to put San José State in the lead, 59-58. Her fourth three of the game pushed the Spartan advantage to 65-60 with 14:40 to play and her career-best fifth three-pointer, with 5:02 left in the game, gave the Spartans a 10-point lead, 89-79.

This is the first Mountain West Conference Player of the Week honor of West’s career and the first for a Spartan this season.

OFFENSE...WE GOT OFFENSE...IT’S FOURTH IN THE NATION!The Spartans are scoring at a Mountain West Conference high 88.1 points per game clip, which ranks fourth in the nation. San José State is in rarefied air among the likes of Baylor (91.0 ppg), UConn (89.8 ppg) and DePaul (89.5 ppg).

Against Columbia (11/16) the team set a program and conference record for points in a game, when they dropped 119 on the Lions, which is the fourth highest single-game point total in the NCAA this

year. The Spartans have eclipsed 100 points in a game three times this year and have come away with a victory each time.

CAN YOU HANDLE PRESSURE...SPARTANS 4TH IN THE NCAA IN TURNOVER MARGIN Through 12 games the Spartans have shown what their pressure defense is capable of doing. SJSU has forced its opponents to turn the ball over 288 times and in those, made 144 steals. San José State has made those opponent miscues pay off to the tune of a 301-157 advantage in points off turnovers. Nationally, the team ranks fourth in turnover margin at 9.08 and 18th in steals per game grabbing 12.0 per game.

SHARING IS CARING...SAN JOSE STATE RANKS 41ST NATIONALLY IN ASSISTSAt 16.0 assists per game the Spartans are ranked second in the Mountain West Conference and are 41st in the nation. Aniya Baker (So, PG, Perris, Calif.) leads the team with 4.3 assists per game, which is good for fourth among MW performers and 92nd nationally. Chereese Thomas (Gr., PG, Dublin, Calif.) is also in the top-10 in the conference, ninth, at 3.0 assists per outing.

THREES ARE THERE FOR THE TAKING...SJSU IS 13TH IN THE NATION IN MADE 3-POINTERSSan José State is hitting an average of 8.5 shots from beyond the arc per game, which ranks 13th in the nation and tops in the Mountain West, but taking and hitting threes are nothing new under head coach Jamie Craighead.

With 245 made 3-pointers and 793 attempts, the 2013-14 Spartans shattered the program’s previ-ous marks in each category. The previous record of 146 3-pointers in the 27 games (1999-00) was equaled in just 20 games (at UNLV 1/29) last season. In addition, they passed the previous record for attempts in a season (493 in 29 games in 2000-01) in that same game.

Both marks set Mountain West Conference records as well.

MY OH MYZHANIQUE Myzhanique Ladd (Fr., G, Seattle, Wash.), the 2013-14 Ms. Basketball in the state of Washington, leads the Spartan freshman with a 7.1 ppg average and has earned starts in nine of the team’s 12 games this year. She ranks third among all conference freshman in scoring and has reached double figures in scoring four times this year including in three of her first four games.

SMITH, WEST & BAKER IN TOP-5 FOR SOPHOMORE SCORINGAmong sophomores in the Mountain West Conference, the Spartans have three of the top five scorers as we head into conference play. Jasmine Smith (So., F, Burbank, Calif.) ranks second at 10.7 points per game. Her scoring average is nearly the same as last season (10.8 ppg in 2013-14), but she is doing it in seven fewer minutes per game (down from 23 per game last year to 15.5 per game this year).

Rachol West (So., F, Bakersfield, Calif.) ranks fourth with an 7.8 points per game average. West is coming off the best offensive performance of her career, a 19-point outburst against Sacramento State in which she drained 5-of-8 3-point attempts and grabbed five rebounds in just 19 minutes of work. For her effort she was named the Mountain West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.

Aniya Baker’s (So., PG, Perris, Calif.) 7.3 points a game is the fifth most among conference soph-omores. Baker, in her first season as a regular starter, is close to doubling her freshman scoring average of 4.1 points. She has increased her shooting percentage from the field, 3-point range and from the free throw line over her freshman campaign while playing at UC Davis.

CAREER FREE THROW RECORD FALLS IN UC DAVIS WINBy hitting each of her six free throw attempts in the Spartans win over UC Davis (12/10), Ta’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) set a new San José State career free throw record. Cunnigan

passed Cricket Williams (466 from 2001-04) to establish the new record 471...and counting. Currently, her 473made free throws are the record for the school (men’s or women’s program) and the most by any active women’s basketball player in the NCAA. She glided past the men’s record, Adrian Oliver’s 442 free throws from 2009-11, in the team’s win at UC Irvine (11/22).

CUNNIGAN NEARS SAN JOSÉ STATE SCORING RECORDSWith an 11 point effort against Utah State (12/31), Ta’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) moved into second place on the program’s career scoring list. Entering the game against Wyoming her 1,680 career points are 80 behind all-time women’s scoring leader Karen Mason (1,760 points from 1978-81) and 87 behind Ricky Berry (1,767 points from 1986-88) for the school’s all-time record (men or women).

In the Utah State win (12/31) Cunnigan passed Elinor Banks (1,672 points from 1978-81) for third place and then Cricket Williams (1,676 points from 2001-04), who occupied second place.

SHILL MAKES RETURN VS. UTAH STATEEmily Schill (So., F, Tacoma, Victoria, Australia) saw her first game action in nearly 18 months, logging four minutes in the Spartans 62-58 win over Utah State (12/31). Schill set the program’s freshman single-game scoring record with 36 pts versus Utah State (1/12/13). Following her fresh-man campaign she suffered a leg injury, underwent surgery and has been rehabbing for the last 13 months. In her first action she had a rebound and blocked a shot.

EVERYBODY BRINGS SOMETHING TO THE PARTY!In 2014-15, San José State is getting production up and down its lineup. Each of the 11 Spartans who have played in the first 12 games is averaging double-digit minutes. The bench has scored 411 of the team’s 1,057 points; 39% of the total production. In four of its games, all 11 have been in the scoring column and in seven of the other eight, at least nine players have scored.

Nyre Harris (Jr., G, Stockton, Calif.) completed her year in residency at the conclusion of the fall term. In the three games, two of which were starts, Harris is averaging 20.0 minutes and 8.0 points.

Emily Schill (So., F, Tacoma, Victoria, Australia) made her season debut in the Utah State win playing four minutes.

CUNNIGAN ABOUT TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP UP IN ANOTHER CAREER CATEGORYIn addition to the San José State women’s basketball scoring record, in which Ta’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) trails Karen Mason (1,760 points, 1978-81) by 80 points, she is on the cusp of moving up the career 3-pointers list. Cunnigan is two made 3-pointers from tying Cricket Williams for sixth place on the program’s career 3-pointers list (114).

CUNNIGAN AMONG ACTIVE CAREER LEADERS IN THE NCAAAmong Division I women’s basketball players, Ta’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) ranks first free throws made (476) and second in free throw attempts (643). She is eighth in steals (229). Her 1,421 field goal attempts are 11th most among active women players and she ranked 20th in field goals (546). Her 16.5/g career scoring average is the 15th highest among current players. Finally, Cunnigan is the eighth leading scorer among active players with 1,680 career points.

SCOUTING WYOMINGThe Cowgirls, picked to finish third in the conference’s preseason poll of the head coaches and media members, dropped their Mountain West opener 58-55 at UNLV. The team enters its match-up against the Spartans with a 5-6 record, 3-2 in games in its Arena-Auditorium.

The Cowgirls offense is led by junior guard Marquelle Dent, who tops the squad in points (17.3/g), steals (2.0/g) and assists (5.8/g). Kayla Woodward, a senior forward and MW Preseason Player of the Year, leads the team with 7.6 rebounds per game and is scoring 14.7 ppg. Senior Guard Kaitlyn Mileto is the third member of the team scoring in triple digits at 10.6 ppg.

This will be the fifth meeting between these programs in which the Wyoming hold a 3-1 advan-tage. In the two games played in Laramie, the Cowgirls hold a 2-0 advantage and have won by 33 points (86-53 in 1996-97) and 23 points (103-80 in 2013-14).

WOODBERRY PICK UP RIGHT WHERE SHE LEFT OFF IN 2013-14 Rebecca Woodberry (Sr., F, Phoenix, Ariz.) finished the 2013-14 season as the 13th best 3-point shooter in the nation (3.1/g). Through six games of 2014-15 she is nearly on her pace from last year (2.5/g) and ranked 86th in the nation. She set a career-high with a 30-point outburst at Utah (11/14) to open the season and reached 500 career-point at San José State in the team’s win over Cincinnati (11/29).

The single-season record holder for 3-pointers (90 in 2013-14), Woodberry became the seventh player in program history to reach 100 made threes when she drained four at UC Riverside (11/20). She has made 102 3-pointers in 33-career games at San José State.

RECORDS GALORE FALL IN WIN OVER COLUMBIAThe Spartans set several records in 119-76 win over Columbia (11/16), mostly notably the 119 points. That’s both a team and Mountain West record. The previous team high was 103, which they clearly shattered. That had been achieved twice: in a 103-69 win over San Francisco State on Dec. 5, 1980, and a 103-80 win over Utah State on Jan. 12, 2013.

The Spartans also set school records with 42 free throws made and 53 free throw attempts. The teams combined for 69 made free throws, which is a Mountain West record. San Jose State’s 89 field goal attempts and 53 free throw attempts are No. 2 in Mountain West history. Finally, the combined 195 points, the Spartans’ 119 points and the free throws made and attempted totals are Event Center records and the field goals (35) and field goal attempts tied Event Center records....Whew!

COLUMBIA WAS A TEAM EFFORTIn the Spartans 119-76 win over Columbia, every player made a contribution to record setting performance. All 11 players were represented in the scoring column, led by Jasmine Smith (So., F, Burbank, Calif.) who scored 23 points. Ten grabbed a rebound with Myzhanique Ladd (Fr., G, Seattle, Wash.) and Paris Baird (So., F, Van Nuys, Calif.) paced the team with six each. Ten players dished out an assist with Aniya Baker (So., G, Perris, Calif.) toping the team with five and 10 players had steals with Smith leading the way with five. Oh, and every player sank at least one free throw. Nine of the 11 made more than one free throw and of those, none shots less than .625 from the charity stripe.

CUNNIGAN GLIDES PAST 1,500 CAREER POINTSEntering the 2014-15 season,Ta’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) stood at 1,495 career points. With an 18 point performance at Utah (11/14), she became the fourth player in San José State women’s basketball history to pass that milestone. Cunnigan has scored 1,523 points in just 92 games. Her next milestone comes at 1,666 points, when she reaches Elinor Banks (1978-81) for third place on the program’s all-time scoring list.

WHAT A HALF OF HOOPSSan José State is competing in its 41st season of women’s college basketball. In the second half of the game against Columbia the Spartans scored 64 points and launched 50 shots. Both are records San José State records for a half of basketball.

11IN...11 CONTRIBUTEAll 11 Spartans who were available to play, have seen action in both games this year. Nine played double digit minutes at Utah (11/14) and 10 did against Columbia (11/16) as Coach Craighead kept a steady rotation of fresh players coming into the game to keep the intensity at a constantly high pace. Every Spartan made a positive impact on the stat sheet, including four who scored in double figures, led by a career-high 30 points from Rebecca Woodberry (Sr., F, Phoenix, Ariz.).

IMPRESSIVE DEBUTSMyzhanique Ladd (Fr., G, Seattle, Wash.) and Aniya Baker (So., PG, Perris, Calif.) were impressive in their Spartan debuts. Ladd was 8-for-8 from the line and scored 15 points as well as played important minutes in crunch time at Utah (11/14). Baker also scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers, she dished out a team-high three assists and contributed two steals all while taking care of the ball handling duties.

WOODBERRY IS READYAt Utah (11/14), Rebecca Woodberry (Sr., F, Phoenix, Ariz.) served notice that she is ready for the 2014-15 season. She opened the campaign with a career-high 30 point outburst at Utah (11/14). She led the team in scoring, rebounds (8) and steals (4). The nation’s 13th leading 3-point shooter in 2013-14 (3.10/g) drained five-of-seven treys and hit 9-of-11 free throws.

WINS IN THE HOME OPENER NOT EVEN A 50-50 PROPOSITIONIn home openers since the 1977-78 season the Spartans are just 17-19. However, they have won their last two home openers, both against San Francisco State . Before this current streak, the last win in a home opener came in the 2005-06 season.

CUNNIGAN NAMED PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE BY MOUNTAIN WEST COACHESTa’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) is one of five players to be named the Mountain West Preseason All-Conference team by a vote of the conference’s head coaches. This is the second straight year Cunnigan has received the honor.

Cunnigan, averaged 18.4 points per game last year and is the leading scorer among all returning players in the Mountain West Conference this year. She led the team in scoring and steals and ranked second in blocks, assists, free throw percentage and 3-point percentage.

She was the second leading scorer in the Mountain West Conference last year and earned honor-able mention All-Mountain West honors after the season.

SEASON OPENERS A 50-50 PROPOSITIONSan José State has played 39 season openers and has split them right down the center - 20 wins and 19 losses. Only three of seven head coaches, Sharon Chatman (in 1976-77),Tina Krah (in 1986-87), and Jamie Craighead (in 2013-14) have begun their Spartans career with a win in their first game. Chatman had seven season-opening victories in her 10 years at the helm of the San José State program (1977-86), the most in Spartans history. The late Janice Richard won six of her seven season openers as the Spartans head coach (1999-2006).

ROAD OPENING WINS HARD TO COME BYIn the last 10 years, the Spartans are just 2-8 in their first game on the road. The team defeated Santa Clara 97-93 last year, but have to go back to 2004-05 and a 54-52 win at UC Irvine for their last win in the team’s first road game.

SINGLE-SEASON MARKS FELL IN 2013-14 SCORING MARK SETThe 2013-14 San José State women’s basketball set the program’s single-season record for points at 2,308. They eclipsed the previous record, 2,301 points, which was set in 1979-80.

CUNNIGAN ENTERS HER SENIOR SEASON FOURTH ON ALL-TIME SCORING LISTTa’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) has scored 1,495 career points and is in 4th place on the Spartans career-scoring list. On a layup with 1:49 to play in the first half at Air Force (2/12), she moved ahead Hulett Brooks (1990, 92-94 1,373 pts.) for the fourth spot on the list. On her first bucket against NEV (2/19), she become just fourth player in the Spartans’ 38-year history to reach the 1,400-point plateau.

Cunnigan was the 13th player to reach the 1,000-point plateau in the game against UC Riverside (11/15). She accomplished the feat in 63 games, the second fastest in program history.

IF THEY’VE GOT THE THREE THEY’LL TAKE ITWhen the Spartans launched 42 3-pointers at San Diego State (1/25), they set a San José State single game and a Mountain West Conference record. They broke the program’s previous record of 36, which was set against USF (11/20/14) and the previous MW record of 41 set by Wyoming at Colorado State (1/28/05).

San José State had four of the top six 3-point shooting games in the MW last year and four of the top five in conference games.

Head CoachJamie Craighead

Oregon (2002)Second Year

On September 16, 2013, Jamie Craighead, who coaches an up-tempo offense and stifling defense, was named the eighth head women’s basketball coach at San José State University.

Craighead came to San José State after spending four seasons at Sacramento State (2010-to-2013), where she was the winningest women’s head basketball coach in 20 years and the only coach to post a winning conference record at Sacramento State since they entered the Big Sky Conference in the 1996-97 season. Under her guidance the Hornets reached the Big Sky Conference Tournament for just the fifth (2012) and sixth (2013) times in program history. In those appearances, Sacramento State earned its first tournament wins and reached the semi-final round both years.

The youngest head coach in Division I when she took over the Hornets, Craighead’s teams, playing a fast-break type offense, led the Big Sky Conference in scoring in each of her four seasons.

Sacramento State set several program records in 2012-13 including field goals made, assists, blocked shots and fewest turnovers committed. In addition, the team’s 19 wins equaled the program’s single-season record, which was set in the 1990-91 season. The Hornets led the Big Sky in points, 3-pointers, and assists and on the defensive end, topped the league in steals and blocks.

Also in 2012-13, Craighead coached Kylie Kuhns and Megan Kritscher, two of the top post players in the Big Sky Conference. Kuhns, at only six feet tall, broke the school and Big Sky career rebounding records during the year, while also leading the team in scoring. For her efforts, Kuhns earned All-Big Sky first-team honors. Kritscher shattered the Big Sky single-season blocks record and ranked fourth in the NCAA in blocks per game for the season.

In four seasons, nine of her players garnered All-Big Sky honors. She coached 2011-12 Big Sky Freshman of the Year Fantasia Hilliard, and 23 of her athletes received Aca-demic All-Big Sky Conference honors for their work in the classroom.

Prior to accepting the top job at Sacramento State, Craighead spent the 2007-08 season as an assistant for the Hornets before being promoted to Associate Head Coach the following year.

Craighead started her coaching career in 2002 under two-time NCAA Division II Coach of the Year Gordy Presnell at Seattle Pacific University. In her three years at SPU, the team posted an 89-5 record, won three PacWest Conference titles, qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament each year and reached the championship game in 2005. After her success in Seattle, she spent two seasons as an assistant at Portland State University before taking a position at Sacramento State.

As a collegiate player at the University of Oregon, Craighead led the Ducks to the 2002 WNIT championship after three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. When she finished her career, her 182 3-point field goals made ranked second all-time in Ducks history.

Craighead earned honorable mention Academic All-Pac-10 honors as a senior and graduated from Oregon with a bachelor’s degree in educational studies in 2002.
