Head Coach Jim Flanery Entering his 15th season as the Creighton head coach and his 25th consecutive year on the Bluejay bench, Jim Flanery led the Bluejays to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time in school history (2012 & 2013), is the all-time vic-tory leader for Creighton (269 and counting) and led the Bluejays into the BIG EAST Conference in 2013-14. Flanery has guided the Bluejays to the post-season 12 times, including each of the past nine seasons. He recorded eight 20-win seasons, captured two Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championships (2003 & 2013), an MVC Tournament Championship (2012) and brought Creighton to the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship game four times. In addition, Creighton has made two appearances in the WNIT Final Four capturing the 2004 WNIT championship.

The Bluejays third season in the BIG EAST (2015-16) saw Creighton fight through a season-ending injury to Marissa Janning and make a run to the BIG EAST Tournament Final. The Bluejays closed the season with a 17-18 mark and an 8-10 record in conference action. The Bluejays secured their eighth consecutive postseason appearance, reaching the WNIT for the second consecutive season.

DePaul vs. Creighton Series:DePaul holds a 7-2 edge over Creighton, includ-ing victories in the last five meetings. The Bluejays are 0-5 at DePaul, falling by double figures in four of those contests.

About DePaul• Located in Chicago, Illinois.• DePaul head coach Doug Bruno is in his

33rd season as a head coach, the last 31 at DePaul.

• Bruno has a career mark of 665-352 and is 625-322 at DePaul.

Scouting DePaul (11-4, 3-0 BIG EAST)• DePaul has won five straight and are 6-1 at

home this season.• The Blue Devils losses are been to #1

Connecticut, #2 Baylor, #7 Notre Dame, and Temple.

• DePaul, however, will be without the services of leading scorer Jessica January as well as third leading scorer Ashton Millender.

• DePaul has won the BIG EAST each season since Creighton joined the conference prior to the 2013-14 season.

• DePaul is a high possession offense that wants to push the tempo.

Keys to the Game w/DePaul• Take care of the basketball: Similar to

Marquette, DePaul is more than adept at making turnovers become layups. The Bluejays must take of the basketball against the Blue Demons.

• Avoid Runs: Creighton has been in each of the three battles in Chicago until DePaul used a double-digit run to put the game away. Without January the Blue Demons’ offense is less explosive, but still has more than enough.

• Exploit the Advantage on the Interior: Rollerson was dominant against Marquette and Creighton will need another big game to down DePaul on their home floor.

Bluejays Improve to 50-1 Under Flan When Shooting 50%

During Jim Flanery’s tenure at the helm for Creighton, the Bluejays have shot 50% or more in 51 contests, including Monday’s win at Marquette.

Creighton has won 50 of those games, falling just once on Nov. 11, 2006 to Arkansas-Little Rock (66-55).

Rollerson Ties a Career-High Against Golden Eagles with 22

Speaking of Brianna Rollerson’s performance against the Golden Eagles, not only did she tie a career-high of 22 points she did it over just three quarters. Rollerson was held scoreless in the opening frame, but put up eight in the second and third before getting six in the fourth quarter. Rollerson closed the game 10-for-14 from the field and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe.

Third Quarter Remained a StrengthDuring the first three BIG EAST contests Creighton has owned the third period. The Bluejays outscored Butler 16-4, bested Xavier 20-7 in the third on Friday and outscored Marquette 21-15 on Monday.

For the season Creighton holds a 230-186 advan-tage, the 44-point edge is the Bluejays best quar-ter through 13 games.

Lamberty Dished Up a DozenJunior Sydney Lamberty showed the season of giving is not just in December as she dished out the most assists by a Bluejay since 1994 with 12 in the win over Marquette on Jan. 2. Lamberty’s 12 helping hands are the seventh most in school history in a single-game, but it hasn’t been done since Becky Flynn did so against Missouri on Jan. 11, 1994. Two other Bluejays are also in the four-way tie as Cheryl Berry had 12 against Southern Utah on 1/13/90 and Tanya Warren distributed 12 against Nebraska-Omaha on Feb. 28, 1986.

Marquette Brings out the Bluejays’ 20-20 Vision

Senior Brianna Rollerson (22) and sophomore Audrey Faber (21) became the first Bluejay duo to reach 20+ points in the same game since Alexis Akin-Otiko and Marissa Janning recorded 28 and 27 respectivly on Jan. 25, 2015 in a home game against the same Marquette Golden Eagles.

Double-Figures For EveryoneThe entire starting lineup went off for double-digits in the win over Marquette as Marissa Janning (12), Lauren Works (12) and Sydney Lamberty (10) joined Rollerson and Faber.

It marks the second time this season five Bluejays reached 10+ points in a game, the other being Creighton’s 80-77 win over Drake on Nov. 17.

The last time the Bluejays had all five starters close the game in double-figures was during the 2014-15 season against St. John’s on Feb. 6. The Bluejays’ starting unit of Akin-Otiko (14), Rollerson (13) Janning (11), Lamberty (11) and MC McGrory (10) reached double-figures in the same game three-times that season, includ-ing in back-to-back games against Georgetown (Dec.30) and versus Kansas (Dec. 22).

Road Construction has ClearedAfter struggling mightily on the road in the early season, the Bluejays have posted back-to-back road wins at Marist and at Marquette. The most impressive portion of the win at Marqeuette was that the Bluejays shot 51.6% from the field.

Reject City: Bluejays Swat Away Program Record 15 Blocks Against Butler En route to their 67-52 win over Butler on Dec. 28, the Bluejays may have earned a new moniker. Reject City! Creighton swatted away 15 blocks in the victory, led by four from senior Brianna Rollerson and freshman Jaylyn Agnew. The previous record was 12, done against Missouri State (Feb. 27. 2011) and versus Western Illinois (Jan. 4, 1993).

Consider that the Los Angeles Clippers became known as Lob City for the frequency of dunks, while the Portland Trail Blazers became Rip City in the 70s via an improbably comeback win over the Lakers.

Footnote in Connecticut’s 88-Game StreakThe two-time defending national champion Connecticut Huskies are in the midst of an 88-game winning streak that began against Creighton on Nov. 23, 2014.

Bluejay Defense Holds Butler To Just Four Points in the Third

The turning point in the win over Butler was a 16-4 third period for the Bluejays. The paltry output by the Bulldogs, however, was not the smallest amount Creighton has limited an oppo-nent to in one period. That distinction remains with the Mavericks of Nebraska Omaha as UNO managed just three points in the first quarter of the Bluejays 69-46 win on Dec. 20, 2015.

Since women’s basketball moved to quarters prior to the 2015-16 season, the Bluejays have limited opponents to single digits 19 times. Creighton has also been held to nine or less 19 times. The Bluejays smallest output is four points against Villanova (1st - 1/29/16) and DePaul (3rd - 2/21/16)

Fewest Turnovers of the SeasonCreighton’s eight turnovers in the win over Butler (Dec. 28) was the lowest number of the season. Perennially among the top-10 in few-est turnovers, the Bluejays committed just four turnovers against the Bulldogs last season in Omaha (1/10/16) which was also a season-low.

7 Creighton Women’s Basketball Notes

Bluejays Add Three for 2017-18The Creighton women’s basketball team announced the signing of Temi Carda, Gracey Griglione and Tatum Rembao for the 2017-18 season on Wednesday, Nov. 9.

“The thing that we like about this class is how competitive all three are,” said head coach Jim Flanery. “We are very pleased with this trio and feel they will fit in nicely with our returning core.”

Continuing a long line of talent from Minnesota, Carda is a 5-9 guard from Lakeville, Minn. Temi enters her senior season at Lakeville North HS having already claimed two All-State selections, four All-South Suburban Conference selections and is a four-time All-Metro recipient. A member of the Lakeville North varsity since her eighth grade sea-son, Carda enters her senior campaign with over 1,200 points, 300 rebounds and just under 200 assists.

“Temi may be one of the best defen-sive players we have ever recruited,” said Flanery. “She was a multisport athlete in high school, who will continue to improve as she focuses on basketball.”

Griglione is a 6-2 forward from Truro, Iowa, where she stars for Interstate 35 HS. Gracey earned a spot on the varsity squad as an eighth grader, she went on to earn an All-State selection following her freshman, sophomore and junior sea-sons. Griglione has raised her scoring average each season, posting 13.7 as a freshman, 19.3 as a sophomore and 19.7 last season. She set the Iowa State record for blocks as a freshman with 140 and went on to set Interstate 35 records for blocks in a game (11), rebounds in a game (18), points in a game (40), points in a season (464) and rebounds in a season (262).

“Gracey is a skilled big, that doesn’t mind getting physical,” noted Flanery. “The ability to go down low is becoming rare. She can also play away from the basket. She has played for a talented club pro-gram and understands how to work hard to improve.”

The Bluejays’ final addition is also a 5-9 guard, Rembao comes to Omaha from Loveland, Colo. Projected as a combo guard at Creighton, Rembao enters her senior season with 1,290 points over three years at Loveland HS. She tallied a school record 606 points last season, including 39 against Fruita Monument (12/11/15). She set the LHS record with 24.1 points per game last season and has averaged 17.9 ppg over her high school career. A three-time All-Front Range League selection, Rembao has earned two All-State honors. She was named the All Around Athlete (Big School) 2016 Colorado Sportswoman of the year and was the Coloradoan Northern Colorado Sports Awards Female Athlete of the year.

“Tatum is an explosive, competitive kid, that has the ability to play off the ball,” said Flanery. “Similar to Temi, she has been a talented multisport athlete, who will make a significant jump.”

Ever Growing Bench Mob Adds McGrory Sadly the Bluejays Bench Mob officially added another member as senior MC McGrory announced prior to the game with Butler that she will not play again. McGrory suffered a con-cussion while taking a charge against Nebraska in the Bluejays’ 80-64 win over the Huskers on Dec. 18. The play happened in the later portion of the fourth period. McGrory has suffered mul-tiple concussions as a Bluejay as well as several in high school.

Greene Sidelined for 2016-17Sophomore Ali Greene continued a disturbing trend for the Bluejays as the Minnesota native will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2016-17 season. During exploratory surgery on her right knee in late December, micro fractures were found. She will pursuing a medical redshirt and expects to return next season.

Holiday Hangover, Not Under FlaneryIn Jim Flanery’s first 15 seasons, the Bluejays are 11-4 following the holiday break. Creighton has posted seven double-digit wins during the stretch, including the 67-52 win over Butler on Dec. 28.

Janning’s Ascent Across the RankingsJanning is not only climbing the career scoring column for the Bluejays. She enters Wednesday’s contest with DePaul seventh in scoring average (14.6), ninth in field goals made (569), fifth in three-pointers made (249), seventh in free throws made (320) and third in assists (416).

Janning D.J. Sokol Arena Record with Seven Triples

Although it was close to 0 outside, senior Marissa Janning needed a heat check against Nebraska on Sunday, Dec. 18. The Minnesota native set an arena record with seven three pointers (7-of-11) as she led Creighton with 22 points in the Bluejays’ 80-64 win.

Janning Nets BIG EAST Player of the Week

Fresh off a record setting performance to lead the Creighton women’s basketball squad to an 80-64 win over Nebraska on Sunday, senior Marissa Janning was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday, Dec. 19.

In the Bluejays’ lone game of the week, Janning sparked the decisive win over rival Nebraska game highs of 22 points and nine assists. The senior was hot from deep, sinking a career-high seven three-pointers to set a D.J. Sokol Arena record for made triples. Janning’s 22 points were a season-high for the senior, while the nine dimes matched a season best. Janning added four boards and two steals as Creighton halted Nebraska’s three-game win streak over the Bluejays in the annual rivalry game. This is Janning’s first BIG EAST Player of the Week certificate of the season and third of her career.

Bluejays Paint Nebraska BlueWith victories over Nebraska-Omaha (82-45 on Dec. 7) and Nebraska (80-64 on Dec. 18), the Bluejays owned the State for the 2016-17 season. The last time the Bluejays swept the season from its two intrastate rivals was during the 1986-87 season.

Agnew’s Coming Out PartyFreshman Jaylyn Agnew delivered a statement game against Northern Iowa on Dec. 10 as the freshman led the Bluejays in points (16) and rebounds (9). The Kansas native was 4-for-6 from long range and had a look at a game-win-ning shot in the closing seconds that went just long.

More than a City BlockWhile the offense had its struggles in Cedar Falls last Saturday, Creighton’s defense was a force as the Bluejays blocked 10 shots for the first time since 2011. Kylie Brown and Audrey Faber led the way with three blocks each, while Brianna Rollerson and Bailey Norby notched two as well. The last time Creighton reached double-digits in blocks was on Feb. 27, 2011 as the Bluejays swatted 12 shots against Missouri State.

Faber Heats Up Against MavericksFollowing a slow start, sophomore Audrey Faber seems to be coming. The Iowa native was 7-for-10, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, as she tallied a game-high 24 points in Creighton’s 82-45 win over Nebraska-Omaha on Dec. 7.

Bluejays Equal a Program Record From Long Rang With 16 Treys

Despite shooting just 1-9 from beyond the arc in the first quarter, Creighton equaled a program record with 16 treys in the win over Nebraska-Omaha on Dec. 7. The Bluejays closed the game 16-of-31 from long range, hitting 15 of their last 22 from downtown. It marked the fourth time in school history the Bluejays sank 16 three-pointers in a contest. It happened twice during the 2012-13 season, at Evansville (16-of-37) on Jan. 5, 2013 and in a neutral site 91-74 win over South Florida on Dec. 22, 2012. Creighton also nailed 16 trif-ectas in a 63-61 (ot) win at UC Davis on Nov. 27, 2009 and at home on Dec. 6, 1989 in a 115-63 win over Oral Roberts.

Elger Expected to Redshirt 2016-17Sidelined by a concussion early in the 2016-17 season, sophomore Olivia Elger is expected to redshirt the year. Elger has completely recovered from the injury itself, but will sit out the season barring significant injuries.

Owens to Redshirt 2016-17Out for the first six games of the 2016-17 sea-son, junior point guard Jade Owens underwent exploratory surgery on her right hip on Nov. 30. During the procedure a partially torn ligament was confirmed, sidelining the Illinois native for at least 8-12 weeks. With the season already in its second month, Owens is expected to redshirt the 2016-17 season.

Rollerson’s Block PartyIn each of the Bluejays two victories this season, senior Brianna Rollerson has come up with a critical block in the waning moments.

Against Drake she preserved the win with a block of the Bulldogs’ Lizzy Wendell in the closing seconds. Versus Dayton, Rollerson stopped the Flyers chance to tie the game with 1:28 left, then grabbed an offensive rebound and made two free throws with 1:00 remaining to seal the win.

Bluejays Have Gilligan Type Travel WoesThe travel home from the Junkanoo Jam was an adventure to rival Lost or Gilligan’s Island as the Bluejays’ travel party (players, staff, families and a small handful of boosters) spent well over 40 hours trying to return to Omaha.

Scheduled to depart the island at 9 am (ET) on Sunday, the Bluejays did not board an airplane until Monday at 5:45 pm and did not arrive in Omaha until 2:30 am (CT).

The total travel time was 42.5 hours, including approximately seven hours over two trips at the Bimini airport.

As a comparison it takes three hours to boat from Bimini to Miami, while driving time from Miami to Omaha is 24 hours.

Wrong Side of the GymWhile is was surely coincidence, consider the three-point shooting woes on the left side of the gym at Gateway Christian Academy during the Creighton/Dayton contest.

In the first half Creighton was 2-for-16 (12.5%) from long range shooting at the left basket, Dayton meanwhile was 1-for-7 (14.3%) in the final two periods. A combined 3-for-23 (13.0%).

Conversely on the right side Dayton was 3-for-4 (75.0%) and Creighton was 4-for-9 (44.4%) for a combined 7-for-11 (63.6%).

Always Be PreparedAfter not playing a minute in the first two games, junior Myah Mellman made the most of her first opportunity nailing her first five shots against Drake. Each was a trifecta as Mellman went on to score a career-high 18 points on 6-of-7 from long range.

Mellman’s efforts led to her earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, Nov. 21.

Janning Just Missed A Chance at HistoryIt’s been over 12 years since a Bluejay posted a triple-double, but Marissa Janning came closer than anyone every has. Janning finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in the Bluejays’ win over Drake.

The last triple-double in Bluejay history came in 2004 as Laura Spanheimer notched 12 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in the Bluejays’ 87-69 win over Indiana State on Jan. 8.
