Saluki roster features 10 upperclassmen The Salukis have seven juniors and three seniors on the roster, giving them 10 upperclassmen. Four of the juniors are juco transfers — guards Mike Rodriguez, Leo Vincent and Bobby Mannie, and forward Jeremy Postell. Mannie is a walk-on.

Tyler Smithpeters is 3-point threat G Tyler Smithpeters (6-4, 179, Jr.) leads the team in 3-point shooting having made 21-of-45 (.467). He has made at least two treys in eight games. Seventy-four percent of his shot attempts have come from 3-point range this season, and 67 percent of his career shot attempts have been behind the arc.

Salukis reverse the trend In the season-opening win over Air Force on Nov. 13, the Salukis did two things they failed to do all of last season. They won after trailing at halftime (0-14 last year) and won a game decided by five points or less (0-7 last year).

Four-Man Foreign Connection Along with Bradley and Evansville, the Salukis lead the league with the number of international players — each school has four. SIU’s foreign connection features C Bola Olaniyan (6-7, 225, Jr.), C Deng Leek (7-0, 225, Sr.), C Ibby Djimde (6-7, 250, Sr.) and F Rudy Stradnieks (6-9, 216, Fr.). Djimde began his career at Illinois and averaged 2.4 points last season. Stradnieks is only

the fifth European player in Saluki history, joining Kai Nurnberger (Germany), Mirko Pavlovic (Yugoslavia) and Nikos and Than Topouzis (Greece).

In search of a winning season The Salukis have finished below .500 in five-straight seasons. The last .500 season was in 2010. The last time SIU had a winning record was 2008, when the team finished 18-15 and advanced to the NIT. The last winning record in MVC play was 2008 (11-7).

Hinson fifth in career MVC-only wins Now in his 13th season as an MVC head coach Barry Hinson (113-102, .526) ranks fifth behind Henry Iba (187), Dana Altman (182), Eddie Hickey (163) and F.C. Allen (126) in MVC-only career wins.

Walt Frazier — The Rest of the Story Most people know that Southern’s most famous basketball alum is Walt Frazier (1964-67). What they don’t know is the story of how the Atlanta native ended up in Carbondale. Basketball was Frazier’s second-best sport in high school. He was offered a scholarship to play quarterback at Georgia Tech, but he didn’t want to play football. Frazier went on a recruiting visit to SIU in 1963 and met with AD Donald Boydston, who was progressive about recruiting minorities during a time when southern schools rarely recruited them. According to Boydston, Frazier didn’t say one word the whole trip, but called shortly after he took the train back to Atlanta to say he was enrolling at SIU. Frazier was dismissed from the team for academic issues after his sophomore year. He went back to Atlanta and got a job doing manual labor. Frazier called in August of 1965 and asked if he could come back. He was not eligible for a scholarship, so he paid his own way and sat out his junior year, making the Dean’s List. He played on the practice team, and sometimes they would beat the varsity. The 1966-67 storybook season saw Frazier lead the team to the NIT National Championship, beating Marquette in the finals. He turned pro after the season.
