Now that you have booked your wedding venue, it’s time to go shopping! We’ve gatherd advice directly from the owner of your favorite bridal salon, Mira Jantz with Mira Bridal Couture. What makes your bridal salon unique? When designing Mira Bridal Couture 3 years ago, I decided I wanted to create a personal and intimate shopping experience for our future brides. Our downtown location and inimitable design has become the perfect setting for a bride and her mother, sisters, or grandmother to spend the afternoon finding the perfect gown, celebrating with a glass of champagne, wiping a few tears of joy and then strolling downtown for lunch afterwards. Inside our salon every bride will find a unique and classic selection of wedding gowns and accessories. Not only do we work to perfect the dreams of local brides, but we strive to support the brides traveling in from as far as Santa Cruz, Sacramento, and Fresno. Therefore, our passion in maintaining an incomparable, distinctive, and exclusive selection is even more important..What should every bride know before shopping? My advice for every bride is to be prepared. Don’t wake up one Saturday morning and decide it is time to get your gown. Schedule

your appointment 1-2 weeks in advance. Do some homework. Collect pictures out of bridal magazines and designer web sites. Know the location, time of day and style of your wedding. Set your budget for your gown and only bring 1-2 loved ones to your appoint-ment. Whether you select your mom, sister or best friend, once you find the perfect dress, there is no need to shop elsewhere. You’ll overwhelm yourself and turn shopping into a chore instead of an experience. You’ll always go back to the first one. What can we expect to see brides of 2009 wearing? My goal when working with each bride is to keep her wedding gown classic and timeless, not too trendy. I have made some amazing purchases for 2009 that will work with every style and budget. Brides will have a larger selection of straps, sleeves, lace, ruffles, rosettes, and bolero jackets. The assortments of silhouettes are perfect for the garden, ballroom, or sunset ceremonies in the sand.Hem lines are hiked up for fun and flirty brides or the fashion forward bride looking to make a quick reception change into something shorter.Over all, simplicity and elegance is key for each brides style. With 4 new bridal lines added to our salon for 2009, our selection is at its best. (2009 designs begin arriving in July.)

Nestled in downtown Modesto sits an intimate boutique for women. Catering to Brides, the bridal party, Mother's, prom, or any special occasion, Mira Bridal Couture creates a relaxing and inviting experience. With classic and timeless designs, incredible service and a stellar reputation, the owners and staff invite you to visit as you get ready for holiday parties and any other special event coming up.

Owners, Mira and Mike Jantz would like to thank their loyal supporters and clients for continuing to shop and support locally owned businesses and keeping downtown strong. It is because of our wonderful clients and supporters that in our first 2 years of business we have been awarded two prestigious awards. The 2008 & 2007 Modesto Bee “Best of Modesto” and the 2007 Channel 3 KCRA “A List”.

Now that you have booked your wedding venue, it’s time to go shopping! We’ve gathered advice directly from the owner of your favorite bridal salon, Mira Jantz with Mira Bridal Couture.

What makes your bridal salon unique?

When designing Mira Bridal Couture, I decided I wanted to create a personal and intimate shopping experience for our future brides. Our downtown location and inimitable design has become the perfect setting for a bride and her mother, sisters, or grandmother to spend the afternoon finding the perfect gown, celebrating with a glass of champagne, wiping a few tears of joy and then strolling downtown for lunch afterwards. What should every bride know before shopping?

My advice for every bride is to be prepared. Don’t wake up one Saturday morning and decide it is time to get your gown. Schedule your appointment 1-2 weeks in advance. Do some homework. Collect pictures out of bridal magazines and designer web sites. Know the location, time of day and style of your wedding. You’ll overwhelm yourself and turn shopping into a chore instead of an experience. You’ll always go back to the first one.

What can we expect to see brides of 2011 wearing?

Layers, layers, and more layers. The more texture the better. My goal when selecting styles for our clients is to keep the look modern and stylish, yet classic and unforgettable. I feel this is my best

year in buying. Grace Kelly meets Ivanka Trump. Not only can you find an amazing design to fit your dreams, but it will fit your pocket book even more.

What separates Mira Bridal Couture from the rest?

7 years ago, when I was shopping for my wedding gown, I found that every store I visited carried the same designers, the same dresses,, the same looks. It became very repetitive and I wanted individuality. When selecting our designers, I take on “exclusive” contracts. What this means is you can not find the same gown or designer with in a 60-80 mile radius. It is important to me that we carry an incomparable collection and maintain distinction and originality. What’s beautiful about it all is that you don’t have to shop aisles and aisles of gowns in warehouse, department, or bargain type setting to find an amazing gownwith an amazing price. You can shop at MBC and find the most glamorous and chic gown from $600 to $6000.

The only shopping destination for quality, service and selection. Specializing in attire for the modern bride & groom and their entire wedding party. We thank all of our loyal supporters and clients for continuing to shop and support locally owned businesses. It is because of you we continue to receive prestigious recognition and awards.

TO HAVE AND TO HOLDFrom antique hair accessories to jewel-toned color palettes, it’s all about showcasing vibrant jewels of the aisle. In keeping with this retro-inspired movement, brides have taken to repurposing their family jewels into unique wedding accessories. Our favorite ornament to emerge from this wedding trend is the heirloom brooch bouquet—a one-of-a-kind, pass-it-down floral arrangement made from vintage pins and statement-making brooches. Beyond sentiment, these darling charmers lend dash to alternative weddings with bold style. www.BroochBouquets.com.

TIPS AND TRENDS

COLOR THEM HAPPYNothing sours a wedding like disgruntled bridesmaids dolled up in dresses that they would never wear unless forced. Rather than insisting your ‘maids adopt your aisle style (impeccable though it is), remember the days when you were strong-armed into donning inappropriate tulle and (gasp!) obnoxious peach organza, have sympathy, and rethink your dress code. Instead of trying to make everyone happy—you won’t, by the way—select a primary color and ask your bridesmaids to choose any dress they love in a shade of that hue. This chic refashioning of an outdated tradition gives your bridal party their moment without upstaging you, and lends dimension and a unique touch to the Big Day.

WEDDING PLANNING DON’TS10. Don’t work with a wedding planner who is unwilling or unable to produce a portfolio or testimonials upon request.

9. Don’t rush down the aisle.

8. Don’t enter into “verbal contracts” with vendors.

7. Don’t forget to ask the groom for his opinion.

6. Don’t blow off your budget.

5. Don’t order your gown late.

4. Don’t overdo the guest list.

3. Don’t treat photography as an afterthought; skimp elsewhere to splurge on heirloom memories.

2. Don’t lose touch with reality. You’re one person, accept help.

1. Don’t lose focus on what’s most important.

San Joaquin Weddings lifts the veil on four private, romantic isles for honeymooners.

by Jennifer Thornton | all photos courtesy the island resorts

With wedding celebrations becoming grander by the day, today’s honeymooners want nothing more than to get away from it all and take passionate matters into their own hands. Increasingly, this means a quixotic escape to a private island marked by calm lagoons, coral gardens, fiery sunsets, overwater bungalows, minimalist lodging, and romantic seclusion. The following destinations are among our favorite private isle hotspots. >>

NECKER ISLANDIf money is no object, and we mean no object at all, then Necker Island—the 74-acre home of Virgin Records founder Sir Richard Branson—is the place for you, yours, and if you can swing it, 20 of your closest witnesses. Situated in the British Virgin Islands, the isle is a Balinese-inspired paradise surrounded by coral reefs and immaculate white-sand beaches that sit in stark but complementary contrast to turquoise Caribbean waters. Necker Island is, as they say, Crusoe-fabulous (just ask Oprah, she’s a fan). Comprised of an eight-bedroom “Great House” and six smaller “Bali Houses,” the island provides a storybook backdrop for a small destination wedding followed by an unforgettable honeymoon—lovers enjoy privacy, while their guests idle away the days sunning, kite-surfing, sailing, exploring the island, or noshing on succulent, freshly prepared fish delivered by Necker’s very own sushi canoe. A Floating Shooter Bar with pre-dinner shots also served from a ‘canoe’ (not the kind you’re used to piloting); sunset cruises by speedboat (this is Sir Richard Branson’s playground, after all); Bali Hi beach dinners; James Bond-style imbibing (think knocking back a Pink Flamingo martini while watching a classic movie); and donning pirate costumes for Pirates of the Caribbean night (rum included), is just some of what sets Necker Island apart from all other private atolls. www.neckerisland.virgin.com.

Claim to fame: Celebrity pedigree. Hollywood’s elite, including Steven

Spielberg, Mel Gibson, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Oprah have rented the entire island for a jaw-dropping price tag. Thankfully, nightly rates for mere mortals (you and yours) are also offered.

Privacy perks: The list of amenities is ridiculously long, but it starts with unbelievably luxe accommodations and continues with advanced spa therapies from Leha Leha Spa; deluxe gastronomic delights; well-groomed trails; two tennis courts and a gym; trade winds perfect for watersports; and entertainment that can include live performances from an authentic Caribbean band and a fireworks display.

Island hops: The single best thing about Necker Island—and the reason people pay big bucks to visit—is that there is no earthly reason to leave its shores. There’s not a mainland anywhere in the world to rival its wonders. But if you must test this theory, board a helicopter or a boat headed for Tortola for an afternoon of conching and rum tours.

CAYO ESPANTOLocated off the eastern coast of heavenly but accessible Belize is spectacular Cayo Espanto, a quaint four acres of unspoiled ecstasy surrounded by the shimmering jewel-toned waters of the Western Caribbean. Five villas and one overwater bungalow perched at the end of a 150-foot long dock—dreamy Casa Ventanas—accommodates a maximum of 16 guests, whom honeymooners will likely never lay eyes on. What they will see, however (and

cayo espanto

in abundance to boot), are stunning tropical panoramas marked by empty beaches, exotic botanicals, organic beauty living in harmonious balance with the island’s indigenous wildlife, and fellow lovers walking hand-in-hand down the beach, basking in the warm glow of a marigold-colored sunset. www.aprivateisland.com.

Claim to fame: Cayo Espanto is located just 15 minutes from the second largest barrier reef on the planet, and mere minutes from the world-famous Blue Hole, a 415-foot deep underwater sinkhole that Jacques Cousteau named one of the world’s top 10 sites for scuba diving.

Privacy perks: Temporary residents of Cayo Espanto enjoy inspired bungalow stays with a modern menu of amenities that include a private dock, plunge pool or Jacuzzi, and alfresco shower. Honeymooners will also enjoy personal butler service (epicurean cuisine at a moment’s notice); premium spa therapies such as a peaceful beachfront

massage; customized gourmet picnics of fresh lobster barbecue served on a secluded beach; access to paddle boats; and one-on-one diving instruction from a bona fide dive master.

Island hops: Honeymooners with bungalow-fever (not necessarily a bad thing, in this case) will find several day trips to wrest their antsy attentions. Scuba diving the Blue Hole and snorkeling at Belize’s nearby National Marine Park are givens, but islanders also will find solo and/or guided angling for bonefish and tarpon a worthy diversion. Birdwatching for spoonbill, pelican, and frigates on the neighboring islands of Cayo Rosario and Bird Caye is recommended, as are various cultural excursions that include exploring the ancient Mayan ruins of Lamanai.

DESROCHES ISLAND, SEYCHELLESBreathtaking in its splendor, the remote coral atoll of Desroches Island is the biggest of all the Amirantes islands, and arguably the Indian Ocean’s most beautiful. Gifted with an ideal climate, majestic views, and a beautiful landscape peppered with coconut trees, Desroches Island is comprised of 20 glass-fronted suites and 26 villas, complete with indoor/outdoor showers and any possible amenity you would ever need (but will probably never use), to complement the island’s sweet flavors and remarkable union of natural and manmade wonders. While more populated than most other private isles, Desroches Island makes good on its promise of privacy; honeymooners feel alone on its shores, at ease with its snail’s pace, and at home in its hospitable company. www.desroches-island.com.

Claim to fame: Apart from North Island, Desroches Island is the only all-inclusive resort in the Seychelles, which forms part of the world’s longest reef system, making it a haven for scuba divers keen on exploring a colorful underwater world alive with amazing aquaculture.

Privacy perks: Desroches Island boasts no mobile reception, making it easy for visitors to unplug and explore the isle by land (biking and fishing) or sea (scuba diving, snorkeling, and windsurfing). The island also offers its own boutique and luxury spa staffed by Balinese masseuses.

Island hops: The nearby island of St. Joseph’s hosts beach barbecues, sunset boat cruises, and hydro biking for guests of Desroches Island.

PETIT ST. VINCENTElegant rusticity amid a verdant tropical landscape make the tiny, privately-owned Petit St. Vincent one of the West Indies’ most enchanting natural beauties. Located 40 miles south of St. Vincent in the Grenadines, this quiet island resort surrounded by azure Caribbean waters and sheltered by a canopy of wind-swept palms provides indigenously posh accommodation in 22 chic, stone-quarried cottages scattered on hillsides and cliffs throughout the island. All are partially hidden by lush flower gardens, but still privy to spectacular picturesque vistas: sugary, white-sand beaches, wooden sun decks, and lazy-day hammocks. In a charming twist, guests are asked to alert staff of their service needs (afternoon lunch or an in-room massage, for

Claim to fame: What makes Petit St. Vincent so special is the fact that it is still, remarkably and uniquely, lurking far under the radar. Visitors that have been here rave about the island’s weekly beach barbecue, featuring fresh lobster and steak cooked over an open firepit, and accompanied by a lively steel band serenade.

Privacy perks: “Do not disturb” is taken literally on Petit St. Vincent.

Warm waters and pleasant trade winds make the island perfect for tennis, snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, scuba diving, sea kayaking in glass-bottom boats, and fishing, while a Yoga Pavilion and hiking trails f lanked by groves of banyan trees provide holistic- and eco-minded guests with restorative respite.

Island hops: Petit St. Richardson supplies the only offshore diversion. This tiny island offers honeymooners a thatched umbrella for shade, and a delightful spot to enjoy a customized lunch and cocktails delivered by dinghy.[SJ WEDDINGS]

Because even Happily Ever After begins with a plan, the following destination wedding tips will put you eight steps closer to the altar.

Budget realiStically: Know exactly what you have to spend, and what your guests can afford. Marrying abroad is not always the least expensive option, so monetary considerations must be a given, after which a nonnegotiable guest list should be compiled.

conSult an expert: Hire a destination wedding planner to help navigate the cultural landscape, translate legalities, and facilitate details.

conSider cuStomS: Not every country recognizes civil ceremonies, for example, and only permits couples to marry on certain days, so do your homework.

don’t procraStinate: A far-flung wedding requires time management. Translating and processing required documents takes time in other countries, so don’t wait to get started.

poSt the detailS: Design a simple website with wedding details, required paperwork, and links to travel deals for guests.

update documentation: Be aware of a country’s passport laws, and make sure that wedding guests have plenty of time to update their paperwork if necessary.

arrive early: Don’t leave anything to chance, and we’re not talking about jet lag either. Land at your wedding locale at least two days before the wedding to finalize any lingering details.

get a Written record: Make sure that you have a written confirmation of all agreements prior to payment.

Galleto Ristorante, Modesto

After Neal proposed at Disneyland, Tiffany decided she wanted the theme for her wedding to be 1940s Hollywood Glamour. Her mother helped fulfill Tiffany’s wish by surprising the happy couple with a 1941 Convertible Packard at the wedding, while Tiffany’s red lips and long black satin gloves made her look as if she had walked right off the silver screen. The bridesmaids wore homemade pillbox hats, and the gentlemen wore tuxedos to suit the snazzy theme. For the reception, chandeliers and red velvet furniture helped to create a swanky lounge atmosphere. To top it all off, the couple had a 1940s-style cigar girl handing out stogies; and instead of giving out traditional favors, the couple rented a photo booth for party-goers to take home memories of the event. When the day was over, all the guests could agree that Neal and Tiffany’s day was more than a wedding, it was a classic Hollywood event. —Katy Berry

Knowing that Carolyn had always wanted her family to be present at her engagement, Wes made a good choice by popping the question while on vacation with her family in Mexico. After proposing on a cliff overlooking the sunset, the two celebrated with Carolyn’s family by opening a bottle of champagne that had been hidden in the nearby bushes. Preparing for the big day was stressful, but plans finally came together when the couple found their perfect venue at Wine and Roses in Lodi. They lined the foyer with childhood photos and chose rich purples to accent the affair. But for Wes and Carolyn, the most memorable aspect of the day was sharing it with their friends and family. “There was a point during the ceremony when we turned towards everyone and asked for their support as we moved forward in our marriage,” says Carolyn. “It was a really priceless moment, seeing all the faces smiling back at us. I was overfilled with joy.”—K.B.

Erika was working as a part-time clerk and attending college when she met Stephen, the office accountant at her job. After five months of working together, their cubicle f lirtations finally evolved into a serious relationship when Erika was offered a new job on the East Coast. Stephen knew he’d be by her side, but he wanted to make it official. While visiting Connecticut, the two took a hike and had a picnic on the lake, where Stephen proposed and they became engaged. The couple decided to have a formal winter wedding, and wanted to bring out the spirit of the season without “hitting you over the head with Christmas,” says Erika. The garnet bridesmaids’ gowns conveyed the warmth of the holidays, while rich jewel tones and evergreen centerpieces created a natural, seasonal look. The outcome was a uniquely beautiful atmosphere, in which the two happily celebrated their new life together with friends and family. —K.B.

Two years after meeting during a summer internship for the Philadelphia Eagles, Joshua took Kaitlin by surprise during a picnic by the river, and popped the question. After a moment of disbelief, Kaitlin said “Of course,” and they began preparing for the big day. The wedding took place at the beautiful Appleford Estate, a 300-year-old farm house on sprawling grounds filled with lush gardens, charming ponds, and brick walkways. It made sense that the couple chose a setting with such a rich history, as they happened to set their wedding date in the same year that all four of Joshua’s grandparents were celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversaries. The happy couple honored both sets of grandparents during the reception by giving them a heartfelt speech and toasting to their success. This special coincidence was a significant way to celebrate Joshua and Kaitlin’s new journey, as they became part of their family’s history of long, loving marriages. —K.B.

Eger Estate, Acampo

On January 31, 1969, soon after their high school graduation, Gretchen and Joe Eger gathered in Roseville, Michigan for a quiet, modest wedding ceremony. Forty years later, the two are happier than ever, and decided to commemorate their marriage last July by hosting a fortieth anniversary party on their sprawling, 40-acre vineyard estate in Acampo. Over one hundred friends and family members gathered from across the United States to party with the couple, who had a DJ spinning everything from doo-wop to hip hop to keep the dance f loor full. After the party, Gretchen and Joe spent two weeks enjoying the company of their visiting friends with brunches, barbecues, and pool parties. To all happy newlyweds, Gretchen offers this advice: “It’s not always a piece of cake, but don’t give up. You have to hang in there. We’ve had our ups and downs, but we stuck it out and now we’re happier than ever. Life is good.” —K.B.

Palazzo Pretorio, Italy

Carla and Donald initially planned to have their wedding in Lodi, but after Carla’s mother was unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer, the couple chose to wait until she completed her treatment. When Carla’s family decided to plan a trip to Italy, she and Donald jumped on the opportunity to elope. “We called it the Amazing Race wedding because we had so many appointments to get approval,” says Carla. “At one point we had three hotel rooms in three different cities because we didn’t know where we’d be next.” Their approval finally went through on a Friday, one day before the wedding. The ceremony was held in Tuscany, and the non-Italian speaking couple entrusted the chef to create their menu. He chose traditional fare: raw fish and chicken liver. Carla still laughs about the menu, but it was ultimately these cultural gaps that made the day special. “The whole experience was memorable and different. It came down to the wire, but it happened, and it was perfect.” —K.B.

Q: Should I send a thank you note to guests who attend my wedding but do not bring a gift? A: While sending a note to guests thanking them for a wedding present is not requisite in this case, it shows appreciation and gratitude for the gift of their presence. Perspective is important in this situation, so keep two things in mind: The first is that having friends and loved ones at your nuptials is a gift that can never be returned, exchanged, or regifted; and secondly, these are tough times. Despite the occasion, and the gift-giving tradition associated with it, the current economic climate has likely made it difficult for some of your guests to get together discretionary cash for a gift. Hopefully such matters will be discussed with you before you walk down the aisle, but if not, do not assume the slight means more than it does. Do what feels right.

Q: What related events should guests have to pay for at a destination wedding? A: In one abrupt but appropriate word: Nada. Part of throwing a destination wedding is being fiscally responsible for all that it entails. So if your vision includes sunset nuptials in a faraway locale but you are working within a skinny budget, keep it small, otherwise be prepared to cover expenses for everything outside of travel and accommodations expenses. Spa treatments? Check. Rehearsal dinner meals? That’s an affirmative.

Q: Who is responsible for covering bachelorette party costs? A: So long as expectations are clear (meaning that all bridesmaids, friends, and loved ones have been fully prepped and are game and able to chip in), your girls should pick up the tab for all associated merriment. The same holds true for groomsmen and guests of the bachelor party.

Q: How do I politely uninvite a wedding guest? A: Delicately and only if it is absolutely necessary, especially if save-the-date cards have already been mailed. If the only reason you need to uninvite a guest is because you are over budget, find ways to cut corners, not only to side-step an awkward situation, but because having a certain perennial table-topper is not worth sacrificing a relationship. If the reason is of a more personal nature, retract the invite with as much grace as possible. A face-to-face interaction is best, a phone call will suffice, but a text message is a no-go, no matter what the offense. Honesty, even in a wedding situation, is still the best policy.

Q: Is it unfair to ask guests to attend a weekday wedding? A: It is not, as long as your expectations for a turnout are in line with the reality: Most people work and may not want to ask for time off to attend your wedding. If you can live with that possibility, proceed. Keep in mind, while you do not need to ask every guest for his or her opinion, do consult with those on your deal-breaker list as a courtesy. And remember, sending out timely save-the-date cards are essential in this situation.

Q: How do I ask my fiancée’s Best Man to censor his toast for the sake of my conservative family? A: It is your fiancée’s friend, so he should be the one to have the conversation with the Best Man, not you. The news will be better received. But to be fair, you should also have a sit-down with your folks to prepare them for what could be an embarrassing moment. Hopefully everyone involved will understand, but if not, politely but firmly remind all parties that it is your day and that their understanding is very much appreciated. If all else fails, make sure the Best Man is stone-cold sober when he takes the mic.

• COnSiDeR the lOGiStiCS:It’s okay to be sweet on style as long as you’ve thought about the nuts and bolts of cake-making. Arrange a complimentary tasting, discuss plate/pillar rental fees and delivery costs, and be aware of payment and cancellation policies.

• MAKe it yOuRS: A cake should complement your individual aisle style and your wedding’s theme, color, and attire. It should also reflect the couple it celebrates, so use monograms, bridal gown accents (think lace and ribbon), or another unique touch to personalize it.

• DO yOuR hOMeWORK: Collect wedding cake photos and other things that inspire you to share with your wedding cake confectioner.

When it comes to picking out flowers for your wedding, don’t be a late bloomer; plan ahead to make sure that everything will come up roses on your big day.

• MAKe ARR AnGeMentS: Find a collaborative floral designer with whom you connect. Reputable florists will be able to supply references and a work portfolio.

• iDentify yOuR neeDS: Simple backyard weddings may call for a do-it-yourself bouquet of wildflowers and a discreet boutonniere, while formal occasions of size usually require a long list of intricate florals for everything from groomsmen and ring bearer corsages to botanical-rich table-toppers and cake-accenting rose petals.

• Set A BuDGet: Although fiscal demands of weddings vary depending on their elaborateness, plan on setting aside about 8 to 10 percent of your total budget for flowers.

• StiCK tO yOuR Style: Not only should blooms be season and style appropriate, they should also complement bridal party attire (especially the bride’s gown), venue, theme, and color palette. Bring fabric and/or color swatches to meetings with florists.
