Do’s & Don’ts before the Big

“I Do.” BY HEATHER REAGAN

The idea of a wedding is nothing less than dreamy, and the notion of your wedding day is extremely magical. However, there is a practical side to planning a wedding which is accompa-nied by lots of Do’s and Don’ts. Some of the most important ones, I believe, are below….

DO Plan the wedding together. There will be things you care about and things he doesn’t, and vice versa. Planning it together makes the day even more special.

DO Choose a song for your first dance that is meaningful to both of you. Choosing what is popular or a current favorite song won’t mean near as much as a song that holds meaning for you both- no matter what era it is from.

DO Keep a pad of paper and a pen in your car. The car is always a good place to jam! So, keep that pen and paper handy to jot down favorite songs you want to be played at your reception. Traffic or long drives are great opportunities for musical inspirations! Remember to present this list to your band or DJ. (I also recommend going to listen to your band or your DJ before you hire them!)

DO Order extra Thank You notes… A must! You may mess up, or not like what you have written, so having extras will definitely come in handy. Also, remember etiquette dictates that a guest has up to a year to give you a gift, so you may receive gifts long after the actual wedding day and so you will want extras.

DO Remember that there is no such thing as a perfect wedding. There will be glitches, but everything WILL work out. If you stay calm, others will remain calm. The most important thing is to remember why you are there, and if the timing is off slightly or a groomsman accidentally crushes their Boutonniere (which reminds me- DO order a few extra for this pur-pose. Trust me, it happens.) The point is, your wedding day is the start of your marriage. The day itself is not as important as the life you are beginning, so don’t let any unexpected prob-lems ruin your day.

DON’T Choose your photographer or your videographer solely on their work. Relation-ship is largely important. These vendors will be with you the entire day-in your face, cap-turing your interactions, watching your every move, so you will definitely want to feel com-fortable with them. Make sure you like their personality and develop a relationship with them as this will make for better pictures and better video results-guaranteed!

DON’T Forget the Emergency Wedding Kit! Extra safety pins, breath mints, bottled water, aspirin, nail file, Kleenex, nail polish, mini sewing kit, double sided tape, over-the-counter non-drowsy allergy medication (just in case), and hairspray are important staples for any clothing emergency, nail chipping, or a snag that may pop up unexpectedly.

DON’T Forget the waterproof mascara. If you don’t normally wear water-proof mascara, then you may want to test it first to make sure there are no reactions.

DON’T Forget about the Groom. The bride is the center of attention. Often times the grooms get left out. Give your Groom some extra attention leading up to the big day. Send him love notes; let him know how much you look forward to being his wife.

DON’T Leave anything to do for the last week of the wedding. The week of your wed-ding is for pampering! Spend some quiet time at the spa with your groom. An organized bride that can relax a few days before her big moment is the happiest bride. Last minute changes, and trust me there will be some, will not seem so drastic if that is all you have to deal with.

DON’T Forget to leave your watch at home. On the day of your wedding, time stands still.

Wedding Day in One Word:“Unforgettable”

Naffe & aNthoNy MaNglicMotJuly 27, 2014, Vizcaya Hotel

Naffe and Anthony met in February 2010 at a bar, coincidentally, named Dream. Naffe, at the time, was an ex-change student from Sweden studying in Sacramento. She and her friends were enjoying their night out when An-thony walked into the bar “with the most amazing smile,” she says. They were instantly drawn towards each other and started dating. Their first date, as Naffe describes, didn’t go so well. “We couldn’t read each other,” partly due to the cultural differences, she explains. It was after a few dates that Naffe started to fall for Anthony, “he turned out to be adventurous, caring, loving, open and interesting,” she says. Upon the realization that Naffe would soon have to return to Sweden, the couple called it quits. However, Anthony found himself missing Naffe so much, that they decided to try to make things work, committing to a long distance relationship. The couple spent three years traveling back and forth from Sweden to the US to see each other. It was during one of these visits that Anthony proposed. The day before Naffe was scheduled to fly home, Anthony popped the question. “I said yes,” she gushes. After three years of back and forth visits, both traveling to see each other, Naffe made her move to the California Central Valley in September 2013. Though a drastic change from Sweden, “California feels like home, Anthony is here,” she says. The couple tied the knot on July 27, 2014 at Vizcaya in Sacramento. It was a hot day, 104 degrees as Naffe recalls. “My bridesmaids were melting,” who all made the trip to California from Sweden, she adds. Of the 150 guests who attended, approximately 40 came from Europe. “We were so lucky to have everyone there together.” The day came together perfectly, as guests danced, drank and celebrated. “The Swedes were going crazy on the dancefloor,” she laughs. One of the most special moments of the day for Naffe was seeing her husband begin to shed tears as he watched her walk down the aisle. “It was so unexpected and sweet.” Though the bride and groom were filled with anticipation, their day was full of excitement, “It was an amazing feeling. We did it!”

Wedding Day in One Word:“Unforgettable”

DaNae & Kyle WolterstorffOctober 11, 2014, La Rosa Farms

Danae and Kyle met at Cross Point Community Church in Modesto through mutual friends. Kyle’s parents had season tickets to the Giants game and as Danae explains, he had no one to go with. At this point they weren’t close friends, but knowing that Danae was a big fan, he asked her to go. The two had an amazing time and continued to spend time together in groups for a year until Danae voiced she wanted more. “I said, ‘either we’re going to start dating or we can’t keep spending time together,” she laughs. So, of course, the two began dating. The relationship quickly became serious. “He was so generous to everyone, and that was incredible to me,” Danae says. “I fell in love with his heart and his love for other people.” After dating for a year and a half, the couple started talking marriage and Kyle surprised her with a proposal during a trip to Santa Cruz. “We went to Santa Cruz for the day and visited all of our favorite spots for lunch, coffee and shopping,” Danae says. After a day of adventure the couple spent a few hours on the beach, enjoying the scenery and laying on a blanket. Throughout the day, Kyle was documenting moments with what Danae thought were photos, but he was actually videotaping. While sitting on the blanket Kyle suggested they prop his phone up and take a photo by the water. As they posed for the “photo” Kyle dropped to one knee and proposed. The special moment was recorded on video, with the rest of the days special moments; a collection very special to Danae. After eight months of engagement, the couple welcomed 250 friends and fam-ily at their October wedding. “It was just a blast,” Danae continues, “It was the perfect day!”

Wedding Day in One Word: “Unforgettable”

ashlee & hayDeN sisNerosOctober 19, 2014, The River Mill

Ashlee and Hayden’s friendship began when they were both in high school. After going their separate ways, the two re-connected while hanging out with mutual friends. When they met again, they instantly connected, “I knew the first night we hung out that I wanted to date him,” says Ashlee. And since that night in June 2010, “we’ve never been apart,” she adds. It all started when Ashlee and her friends were having a night out. Ashlee saw Hayden and told her friend she was interested. Her friend recommended to Hayden that he make a move, and so he did. Ashlee was caught off guard, and enjoying a conversation with other men, when suddenly, Hayden walked up to her and kissed her – laying his claim and forever locking her down. The proposal came a few years later when the couple traveled to Aptos for Ashlee’s birthday weekend. They packed a picnic lunch, and headed to the beach after opening a special bottle of wine that Hayden had saved and kept hidden. While enjoying the beach and wait-ing for sunset, Ashlee decided she wanted to head back to their picnic to see the special bottle of wine. Hayden agreed to head back, but insisted that each step they took toward the picnic, they had to say something they loved about each other. When Ashlee saw the bottle of wine, it was labeled with the name of the jeweler where Hayden bought her ring. By the time Ashlee had turned around, Hayden was on one knee, proposing. She said “Yes!” and the newly engaged couple enjoyed the rest of the weekend celebrating. On their wedding day, October 19, 2014, the couple was amazed to see all of their friends and family scattered throughout the US come together, “Every-thing came together perfectly,” says Ashlee. The couple and their guests danced all night long. However, the most memorable experience from their big day was the moment they saw each other as Ashlee walked down the aisle. “We couldn’t take our eyes off of each other. That moment is always on my mind.”

BrittaNy & tysoN tiagoOctober 18, 2014, Ironstone Vineyards

Brittany and Tyson met through mutual friends in January 2013. Before officially meeting, Tyson saw a photo of Brittany on a mutual friend’s social media profile. He asked his friend who she was, and Brittany requested Tyson as a friend. The next day, the two made contact with each other. They spoke for hours on the phone and messaged back and forth before meeting for their first date. On January 17th, Tyson’s birthday, Brittany decided to take Ty-son out. She ordered him a special cake from one of San Francisco’s famous bakeries, SusieCakes, carefully deco-rated with something that symbolizes his love for home remodeling projects; a tool belt. During their first date, the couple began to discuss what they wanted out of life. They quickly realized how similar their needs were, “We met, and it was perfect. I thought, where has this guy been my entire life,” says Brittany, “He is too good to be true,” and the two became inseparable. After four months of dating, Tyson asked Brittany, who was constantly driving from San Francisco to Livermore to see him, to move in. A few short months later, Tyson proposed to Brittany in the comfort of their new home. It was around 10 p.m. when they were watching TV that Tyson shot off the couch and said, “I can’t do this anymore,” and rushed to grab something from his truck. He came back inside with a bag from a jewelry shop and handed it to Brittany. “He was really nervous,” says Brittany, who remember him breathing heavily. “I told him, there better be a question with this,” so Tyson grabbed their dog, and asked if Brittany would spend the rest of her life with him. She said “Of course!” “It was really special, I was completely surprised.” On Oc-tober 18, 2014, the couple tied the knot at the breathtaking Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys, Ca. Brittany and her dad drove over the hill in a Model T, which her father had helped build. As Brittany walked down the aisle to the same song that played at her parent’s wedding, “More Than Words,” she was overwhelmed with joy as she looked to her soon-to-be-husband. “Tyson had the biggest smile I had ever seen on his face, he was so proud,” she adds, “I had a vision in my head and it came true.”

Wedding Day in One Word:“Magical”

Nicole & aNthoNy gregoryJune 29, 2014, Congregation Beth El

Nicole and Anthony first met in 2000 through mutual friends while both attending school in Berkeley. Though they always had a spark between them, they tucked it away and remained friends until 2003. “We hadn’t seen each other in a while, I always really liked him but this time we saw each other in a new light,” says Nicole. Anthony pursued Nicole very traditionally, she describes, even asking her ex-boyfriend if he could take her on a date. On the morning of July 6 2013 Nicole’s friend Lily asked her to go on a walk, “she said she needed to talk and sug-gested I bring our dog Mishka,” adds Nicole, “she tricked me.” While the two hiked along the very creek that runs through the rose garden, she noticed her friend filming her. As they approached the ‘magic spot’, as locals know it, the small waterfall of Cordornices Creek, she heard music coming from a place unseen. Anthony then appeared on a bridge above them, singing the same song he had written for her at the beginning of their relationship. After carefully playing the song while walking down a steep stairway, Anthony got down on one knee and proposed. Eleven years after they started dating, the couple tied the knot on June 29, 2014 along the same creek they had their first date, and proposal. The Jewish ceremony was located at Congregation Beth El in Berkeley, where Nicole is a member and currently works. Nicole describes her wedding as full of love, satisfying and also, very creative. Many loved ones provided help and support with their well-honed talents. Nicole’s step mother gathered flowers from her garden, and utilized her skills as a florist to create amazing bouquets. Her wedding dress was made by her mother, “I looked so beautiful because my dress was made with such love and care,” says Nicole. “We designed the dress together and it was a dream come true for us both.” Anthony and two of his groomsmen performed, and the couple’s favorite restaurant catered. Nicole’s step mother, Lyn Booz, chose the delicious, seasonal, and colorful fruit the couple requested instead of a cake. The groomsmen wore grey suits with rainbow ties of different designs and the 15 bridesmaids each picked one color, a dress and matching shoes to create a rainbow. “I was smiling con-stantly, the entire day was so happy. It was such a long journey, getting married felt like a powerful rite of passage.”

The morning seemed like any other as Richard and Chiakis hiked around Lodi Lake. Upon spotting a deer, Rich-ard took off saying he would herd it toward Chiakis so she could take a picture. Chiakis traced his steps, waiting for him to reappear. Instead, she was greeted by their friend, Hailey. Hailey handed Chiakis a long stem calla lily (her favorite flower), a gift bag, and a love quote written on a piece of paper. The gift bag, Hailey said, contained “some-thing old.” Chiakis continued down the path only to find more of her friends, each possessing a love quote, anoth-er long stem calla lily, and that little something for her wedding day. Finally, when Chiakis had received her “some-thing blue,” her friend hinted that Richard was not far. Chiakis ran up to Richard and there he asked her to be his wife. “It was undoubtedly the most creative and personal proposal and really sums us up perfectly. We are both romantics who are a little dorky and take pride in spoiling each other. We are both very hands on and creative, and this is definitely reflected in our wedding plans. We hope that the personal touches to our wedding will create an eclectic and relaxed environment where our guests can have fun and be their own quirky selves!” – Chiakis

Wedding Day in One Word:“Unbelievable”

Katie & scott craWforDOctober 11, 2014, Viaggio Estate & Winery

It was the summer of 2004 when Katie and Scott first laid eyes on each other at the Annual Runner’s Work-shop Camp in Echo Lake, Ca. The two attended separate high schools, and met at various track and XC meets throughout the state. They stole glances at each other, but it wasn’t until two years later that their relationship took off. Katie asked Scott to be her date to senior prom, and they have never looked back. Both runners, Katie and Scott continued to challenge and encourage each other throughout their college years. The couple kept their relationship strong even while attending separate universities on running scholarships in Southern California. One Christmas, the couple attended a holiday party together, and as Katie very vividly remembers, Scott swore he would marry her – a promise he kept. Upon their seventh anniversary, May 25, 2013, Katie had planned to go on a tour of the San Francisco Bay in her friend’s plane. After flying over the city and Baker Beach, Katie looked down and saw the words “Marry Me?” spelled out with signs and tarps, held down by their friends and family. She was in shock, questioning whether the signs were for her. But Scott began proposing and Katie screamed “Yes!” The couple tied the knot in a beautiful autumn ceremony on October 11, 2014 at Viaggio Estate and Winery with the stunning back drop of the Mokelumne River. Katie, who lost her mother and grandmother at a young age, put their photos in frames and wore her grandmother’s jewelry. To wipe the tears that come with such a special day, she used a handkerchief that her mother, grandmother and great- grandmother used on their wedding day. Another incred-ibly special moment for the couple on their big day was their first dance, a surprise choreographed piece consisting of several songs. “Everybody was dancing, it was a grand party!” After a hilarious best man speech, a garter catch by the ring bearer and a three hour dance party, the wedding was concluded with hundreds of friends and family seeing the couple to a sparkler send off. The perfect conclusion to a perfect day.

Wedding Day in One Word:“Blessed”

DoNNa & J.r. ferrerJuly 19, 2014, Saint Anne’s Catholic Church

Donna and J.R. met through their youth group at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Lodi in 2004. However, it was not until a few years later in 2008 that the two became more than just friends. After spending time together, their friendship naturally grew to a romantic level. J.R. courted Donna, and asked her to be his girlfriend in an extraordinary fashion, leaving her gifts and notes containing a poem every day for one week. Also included in the notes was a hint as to what he had in store by the end of the week: a romantic San Franciscan boat cruise. There, J.R. asked Donna to be his girlfriend. Nearly four years later in 2012, it came time for J.R. to ask for Donna’s hand in marriage. He arranged for one of Dana’s best friends to fly in from Maryland to Santa Cruz, where the couple headed for a romantic weekend. While on the beach enjoying the sunset, wine and dessert, J.R. proposed. After-ward the newly engaged couple headed to Donna’s grandparent’s house, where friends and family were waiting to celebrate. On their wedding day, Donna and J.R. were honored to share their big day surrounded by love and sup-port. One of the most special and memorable moments for the couple was celebrating with their friends, family and members of their church. Another particularly special moment for the bride was seeing the look on her soon-to-be-husband’s face, who grew teary eyed as he watched her walk down the aisle.

Wedding Day in One Word: “Perfection”

JacKie & JasoN ParKerOctober 18, 2014, Dodasa Ranch

Jackie and Jason were first introduced in 2012 at Wells Fargo Home Mortgage Bank, where they were both employed. Their first date was at a work event, a River Cats game with their fellow co-workers. From there, the two instantly hit it off and began dating, says Jackie. After a few months of dating, Jackie knew Jason was the one for her when Jason took Jackie and her daughter on a trip to Monterey. Then, she “knew it was right.” It was clear to her that Jason had thought of everything Jackie could ever want, without even having to ask. “He goes out of his way to make sure everything is special for my daughter and I,” says Jackie. This, along with the close relationship Jason established with her daughter, was very special for Jackie. After months of dating, Jason proposed to Jackie on Christmas Eve. While surrounded by family at their traditional Christmas Eve gift exchange and holiday celebration, Jason cleverly proposed by giving her a specially wrapped present. “I was getting down to the last few presents and saw a gift that was wrapped differently,” says Jackie, “I opened it and there was a box, inside of another box.” While she was digging through the tissue paper, Jason had gotten down on one knee. He asked, and she said “yes!” The couple spent the holiday weekend at the Ritz Carlton in San Francisco to celebrate. Upon their arrival, the couple was met with roses and champagne, “He thought of every little detail.” The couple broke the news to their co-workers, who had no idea the two were dating until their engagement. “We got a bunch of calls,” says Jackie, “people thought it was a joke since they didn’t even know we were dating.” On their wedding day, their co-workers presented them with a plaque that read “#1 cou-ple of 2014” with the Wells Fargo logo, something that was both symbolic and special to the couple and their friends. Together, with their wedding party and guests, Jackie and Jason spent their entire wedding weekend at Dodasa Ranch, where they tied the knot. “It was nice to have the opportunity to enjoy the weekend with everyone, and not just a few hours.” It was important for the couple to extend their celebration beyond just the day of the ceremony. They enjoyed everyone’s company, went horseback riding, and played games, “There was always something entertaining.” One of the most special memories for the bride was the moment she came out of the bridal cabin to walk down the aisle, “It all came together for me,” she adds, “my vision was put into place and came out better than we could have imagined.”

Wedding Day in One Word:“Amazing”

Kristi & riley gavelloSeptember 20, 2014, Bare Ranch

Though they had grown up in the same region, had many of the same friends, and went to rival high schools, Riley and Kristi did not meet until both attended junior college. Kristi was attending a baseball game at Delta College in 2006 when she first saw Riley. Kristi, who was sitting in the stands with her friend, made eye contact with Riley – a baseball player, “and it was over from there,” she says. The two were introduced after the game and quickly hit it off. It was not long before the couple fell in love, and found that they shared similar interests such as their appreciation for the outdoors, and favorite sports teams, the Oakland Raiders and Oakland A’s. Kristi knew that Riley was the one for her after their first trip together to Tahoe in 2006. “It was a very stress-ful journey because of the weather,” she adds, but they felt very comfortable together, and once they arrived, the two played in the snow, skied and didn’t stop laughing. “That is the thing about us – We laugh like crazy,” says Kristi. Although the couple spent several years apart when Riley received a baseball scholarship to play for Missouri Baptist University, the couple stayed together. Riley proposed to Kristi at her favorite beach in Santa Cruz. “We had a picnic on the beach with champagne and the sound of waves crashing on the beach,” Kristi continues, “it was perfect. The day turned out beautifully,” says Kristi, who was truly surprised when Riley popped the question, “I had no idea!” The couple was married on September 20, 2014 at Bare Ranch in Lodi. “It was the best day,” says Kristi, who was worried about the weather. Though it rained earlier in the day before the ceremony, everything came together smoothly. “I wanted a huge dance party!” she says, “I made sure ev-eryone danced… Seeing everyone together was such a great feeling.” Another of her favorite, and perhaps one of the most special moments from her big day was walking down the aisle with her dad, saying her vows and kissing her new husband.

Casey and Thien were brought together in 2012 through the online dating site Ok Cupid. Thien reached out to Casey, and after chatting, the two decided to meet and had their first date at a Korean restaurant in Pleasan-ton. Though they are both from Lodi and the surrounding region, the two currently both reside in the bay area. After dating for a while, Casey realized Thien could be the one for her. Though it took some time, Casey knew she wanted to spend the rest of her life with Thien after they discussed their dreams together, such as having a family and home. “I told him that I always wanted to swim with dolphins and he arranged a trip to Sea World to swim with them,” says Casey, “he made my dreams come true.” Thien proposed to Casey at the very spot that they had their first kiss and second date, their favorite Thai restaurant in Livermore. Because of heavy traffic and having to catch an early flight the next morning for work, Casey was hesitant to meet Thien at the restaurant as he planned. But, he convinced her, and even though she arrived late, he walked her to the special spot where he then proposed. “It was totally worth the traffic,” she laughs. On their wedding day, Casey remembers the joy and happiness in everyone who attended. “I loved seeing everyone enjoying themselves with the food and music,” she adds, “that is exactly what we wanted.” One of the most memorable moments for Casey was being touched by all those who spoke at her wedding.

Alexis worked full time at Dameron Hospital as an ER Orderly when she decided to take a part time position at the Stockton Arena ticket box office for the perks, “and that’s where it all began,” she says. “I was first intro-duced to Robert in a hallway by the HR Manager while he was giving me a tour. When I started the following week, Robert was the one to train me in the ticket box office.” After a few weeks had passed, Alexis knew he was the bachelor that everyone wanted, “so I paid him no attention,” she laughs, “which ended up drawing him to me.” Weeks passed as Robert tried to get to know her. He would ask her how her full time job at the hospital was going. “Every day he would ask, I would give him a little more which ended up how we became friends.” After several months, Robert asked Alexis on a date, so the two went to dinner and a movie. The couple’s third date was a night that they will remember for the rest of their lives. “On our third date, he de-cided to take me around his friends for a birthday party. At the end of that night, my friends were leaving and I wanted to go with them. However, as they were leaving my hair got caught in his shirt. Robert’s best friend started laughing and said ‘see you are not meant to leave, ya’ll were meant to be together’.” From that night nine years ago, Alexis and Robert have never been apart. As time passed, the couple welcomed their first son a year later, and their second son in the beginning of 2009. The same year, on November 28th, Robert proposed. “It was amazing. He did it in the comfort of our own home.” Both shed tears as Alexis said “Yes!” The couple put their wedding on hold and welcomed their little girl in April of 2011. Robert remained patient, and a few more years had passed. “In the beginning of 2013, he came home with her cleaned jewelry and re-proposed. “I said ‘Yes, I’m ready now’....At that moment in our lives we knew we were both ready. So the planning started to our new beginning of our happily ever after!”

Wedding Day in One Word:“Eventful”

starr & shaWN BaKerOctober 25, 2014, Morris Chapel

Starr and Shawn first met through mutual friends at a get together in January 2012. “Our meeting in person was preceded by our back and forth banter on Facebook,” laughs Starr, “His friend since elementary school, Brent, was engaged to my friend, Shiloh. So on Facebook, I would comment on one of Shiloh’s posts... and periodically some guy named Shawn Baker would comment something witty and clever back,” she adds, “On the night we met, Shiloh had invited me over for a get together.” So Starr drove from Yuba City to Citrus Heights where they were eventually introduced. Though Starr was shy and walked right past Shawn, he specifically remembers the moment he first saw her, “I can’t explain it, but I knew I needed to get to know her,” he says. The couple hit it off imme-diately. “There was just something about him that was so sincere and true. He was hilarious but not obnoxious. Flirtatious yet respectful. Reserved but not shy,” says Starr. For Shawn, everything felt comfortable and right. So the two went on their first date together at Chili’s in Yuba City. “When he dropped me back off we did not kiss. But he and I both remember the hug we had...and both describe it like no other hug we have ever had. It was long and felt like home. Like we belonged right there, right then.” It didn’t take either long to know they had found their soul mates. During a camping trip with friends and the backdrop of the romantic sunset, Shawn proposed to Starr. The couple tied the knot on October 25, 2014 at the stunning Morris Chapel in Stockton. Though it all seems like a blur, Shawn remembers the big day as exciting and relaxing. “When the doors opened and she walked down the aisle, everybody else just phased out. It was a perfect day.” Though Starr’s day was a little more chaotic, “the realization that I was going to be his wife by the end of day awoke an energy inside of me that I cannot de-scribe. The moment they opened the chapel doors and I could see him waiting for me at the end of the aisle, was absolutely the most memorable and spectacular moment for me that day. I just couldn’t wait to get up there and take his hand, say our vows and be married!”

liNDsi & DaviD richMoNDOctober 4, 2014, Stockton Golf & Country Club

The first time Lindsi and David met was her 21st birthday in 2008. Although they had mutual friends, it was not until a few short months after their first encounter that they became inseparable. Lindsi and David, along with a few of their friends, were invited to a Maroon 5 concert, and “haven’t been apart since,” says Lindsi. After several years together, the couple took a trip to one of their favorite destinations – Santa Cruz. It was here that David pro-posed. The couple had spent the entire day in the sun and going on rides on the board walk, leaving Lindsi feeling exhausted. So, she convinced David to go back to their hotel room for a nap. David insisted it be quick, but be-fore they knew it, the sun had set and it was dark when they woke. David jumped out of bed and told Lindsi, “We got to go!” as he started to panic. After one of the most awkward dinners she can remember, says Lindsi, she and her soon-to-be finance took a stroll on the beach. David kneeled down and popped the question. The couple tied the knot on October 4, 2014 at the scenic Stockton Golf and Country Club. “I’d never been so happy,” she says, “the day was amazing and just flew by.” So amazing, Lindsi remembers constantly smiling, laughing and having a “perma-grin,” making her face literally hurt the next day. While seeing all their family members and dancing with her dad to What a Wonderful World were definitely some of her favorite experiences from their big day, the most memorable moment was marrying her best friend.

Janet and Ron first met at the Street Vibrations event, a celebration of music and motorcycles in Reno, Nevada nearly 11 years ago. The two had an instant and undeniable connection from the moment they met, but remained friends until eventually, they started dating, says Janet. It wasn’t until a few years later that they became a couple. When the timing was right, Janet and Ron took their relationship to the next level. “We both knew from the first time we met, there has always been that spark,” says Janet. A few years into their relationship, Ron suddenly called things off but the two remained good friends. Ron later told Janet that he had been diagnosed with a brain tumor. The couple reconnected and have shared their lives and families since. Ron’s proposal was an adventure neither will forget. He took Janet and his daughter to his hometown, Oroville, where they hiked to a waterfall. The two mile hike turned into much more of a journey than either had anticipated. “It turned out to be eight miles of in-tense hiking,” says Janet, who remembers being exhausted, amusingly questioning whether she’d make it to the end. The group had come and went from the waterfall, with no surprises. The sky grew dark as Ron decided to take Janet and his daughter to another location of personal significance to him – a wishing well, where Ron pro-posed with the breathtaking sunset in the background. Their big day came together perfectly, as the couple won their wedding at the University Plaza Waterfront Hotel Dream Wedding Giveaway Bridal Event! From the flowers to the lighting, table settings to a candy station, and even their engagement photos, the couple won 15 different services provided on their big day. “We were very surprised that they picked us,” says Janet, who did not expect to win, “We won [services] I had never thought I’d have at my wedding.” Among several special moments, one of the most memorable to Janet was her brother giving her away. Another was getting photos with a backdrop of the sunset, palm trees and water says Janet, “It doesn’t even look like we were in Stockton.”

savaNNah & Jerry PicoSeptember 6, 2014, University Plaza Waterfront Hotel

Savannah and Jerry’s story began during high school. One day in 2008, Jerry decided to attend an afterschool Christian Club meeting. Savannah, the club president, put her number on the board for the club members to con-tact her. Jerry took advantage of this, wrote down her number, and later called her and asked her to a movie. The two dated, but soon, Jerry left for school in Santa Barbra and lost touch with Savannah for a few months. It was on March 4 that Savannah called him and told him how she felt, sparking the relationship and encouraging Jerry to make a trip back to Stockton. The couple dated for three years, and as Savannah says, “The rest is history.” It was a normal Sunday after church when Jerry proposed to Savannah at the park where they had their first kiss. “After church, we usually go to a park and have a picnic,” says Savannah. When they arrived at the park, Jerry asked his soon to be finance if she remembered this particular park, “then he asked me to close my eyes. When I opened them, he was proposing!” Though she knew something was different, she did not expect it. On her wedding day on September 6, 2014, Savannah remembers feeling relaxed. There was no stress as everything came together per-fectly with the help of the University Plaza staff. Savannah said a prayer, thanking God for allowing her to meet her husband. “I felt honored, filled with joy and peaceful.” One of the most memorable moments from her big day was seeing her dad choke back tears as he waited to walk her down the aisle, and dancing with her mom to Car-ries Underwood’s He is Good. But the moment that stands out the most, is making eye contact with Jerry as she walked down the aisle.

roseMarie & allaN MagliNteOctober 18, 2014, University Plaza Waterfront Hotel

Rosemarie and Allan began their life-long friendship in third grade. Though they did not start officially dat-ing until their senior year of high school, they innocently flirted and crushed on each other all the way through middle school. It was not until their last year of high school that they took the natural step and started dating. “He asked me out over the phone,” says Rosemarie, who remembers spending hours talking with Allan on the phone. The couple even attended their senior prom together. Allan, the athletic type, and Rosemarie, the nerdy girl, went to separate colleges, but kept their relationship strong and came back to their hometown of Stockton together. As a couple, they have been through three graduations, two city moves, and a decade of love; truly watching each other grow up. Nine years later, Allan proposed to Rosemarie in an impressive waterfront proposal. On Febru-ary 17, 2013 Allan took Rosemarie to the waterfront in downtown Stockton where they met a friend for a photo session. “He said he had a photo shoot planned” says Rosemarie, after a few photos “he got down on one knee. I thought it was a joke at first since we’ve been together for so long. Then, I realized he had a ring in his hand and a big smile on his face. Of course I said yes!” Afterward, the newly engaged couple went to Rosemarie’s parents’ house for dinner, where they were greeted by friends and family. The couple describes their relationship as “full of encouragement and love.” Allan had always made it a point to make her laugh, but on their wedding day, he made it a goal to put a smile on her face every day. The couple married in a traditional catholic ceremony, located at the Cathedral of Annunciation in Stockton on October 18, 2014. The couple wanted the ceremony, although tradi-tional, to incorporate their loving relationship. The songs they chose were particularly meaningful. The wedding party walked down the aisle to Train’s “Marry Me,” while the bride entered to, “Always and Forever,” the first song Allan had ever serenaded to her. Rosemarie describes her big day as everything they had ever wished for (includ-ing a basketball intro, the people they love, an ice cream bar, karaoke, and lip balms that read “Our love is the Balm!”). “I loved everything. Everyone who came said it was the best wedding they had ever been to. That’s the best way to start our new life together.”

Wedding Day in One Word: “Perfect”

JeNNa & DaNNy rhoDesNovember 1, 2014, Viaggio Estate & Winery

Jenna and Danny met through an online dating service in 2012. Jenna was drawn to Danny because of his hu-mor, wit and sarcasm. After immediately hitting it off, the two decided to meet for their first date at a local coffee shop. After arriving at the coffee shop and realizing it was closed, the two walked around and found the only other business open at the time: a bar. It was then that they realized just how much they had in common; neither drank coffee or alcohol, so they shared a coke and enjoyed each other’s company. The two laughed and talked for hours, says Jenna, “It was really natural and fun. It felt like we had known each other,” she adds, “It felt really comfortable from the beginning, and it was never hard to talk to him.” Everything fell into place as the couple became friends, and partners. Danny lived the bachelor life in the city before eventually purchasing a house in the suburbs closer to Jenna, a true sacrifice. Before becoming engaged, the two worked on the house together and decided to throw a house warming party. Because the party was close to Halloween, Danny’s favorite holiday, the couple’s friends and family dressed in costume to celebrate what would be the surprise of a lifetime. Danny called everyone outside, and as they gathered around the newly finished swimming pool, Jenna noticed everyone pulling out their phones. She thought Danny was about to push her in the pool, so she held onto him. To her surprise, Danny proposed while surrounded by all their friends and family. The couple married on November 1, 2014 in a ceremony that perfectly represented their interests and love for each other. Although it had rained the day before, there was nothing but blue skies, beautiful clouds and refreshing landscapes. While the best part of her big day was seeing Danny as she walked down the aisle to a rendition of the Little Mermaid’s “A part of your World,” seeing her friends and family come together made everything even more special. “The entire day was perfect, it was like a dream,” says Jenna.

Fate brought Allison and Ross together in June 2010 after the two both started working for ADP in Pleasanton, Ca. After a few months of friendship and several attempts by Ross, the two finally went on their first date together the following November. “I played hard to get. Ross was very persistent,” says Allison, “The persistence definitely paid off. Once we went on our first date, it was game over.” Much like their relationship together, their first date was romantic, spontaneous and relaxing. The couple spent their date in San Francisco where they had dinner and enjoyed the holiday decorations in Union Square. “Ross is very romantic, thoughtful and selfless. He always goes the extra mile,” adds Allison. Together the couple enjoys taking random weekend trips and it was during one of these trips that Ross proposed to Allison in Lake Tahoe after several months of planning. “He is very detailed,” adds Allison. Though he had already asked her dad’s permission in January of 2013, it wasn’t until June that Ross proposed. “He desensitized me by taking me on some trips where I thought he was going to propose, but didn’t.” It wasn’t until Father’s Day weekend that he popped the question right before the couple set out on a hot air bal-loon ride across the lake. “Right before going up, he pulled me in front of the balloon to take photos. While we were taking photos, he told me he had something to ask.” He got down on one knee and proposed. The couple celebrated the next day with Allison’s family who surprised her when they came home for their family’s Father’s Day celebration. The couple wed on October 18, 2014 at Viaggio Estate and Winery in Acampo. One of the most special moments for the bride on their big day was seeing Ross’s face at the end of the aisle. “The look on his face was priceless - it was pure love and emotion. It really hit me then. I realized this is really happening,” says Allison, who didn’t feel nervous or stressed at all. “It was everything I imagined and more.”

Wedding Day in One Word: “Unforgettable”

DoN & sheri sMithSeptember 27, 2014, Woodbridge Golf and Country Club

Don and Sheri were brought together when their children attended and played sports together at Lodi High School. Sheri and Don’s children met and played water polo, swam and cheered together for the high school, natu-rally becoming friends. Before their children could drive themselves, Don and Sheri would play tennis together while their kids were at practice. Because of their children’s friendship, and a shared love of the outdoors, it wasn’t long before Sheri was invited along on Don’s family’s boat trips. Along with their children’s sport teams, Don and Sheri found that they had a lot in common. Together, they share a love of sports, and enjoy camping, bike riding, waterskiing, and snow skiing, among other outdoor activities. One of the fondest memories they’ve shared together in their relationship was hiking Half Dome together, “It was a huge accomplishment for us. It was not easy, and I had no idea what I was getting myself into,” says Sheri. After nearly five years of dating, Don proposed to Sheri. “It was so sweet,” says Sheri. The couple spent the day in the romantic city of San Francisco where Don popped the question. In a quiet area with the backdrop of the bay bridge, Don got down on one knee and asked Sheri to be his wife, “I said yes then and there,” says Sheri. Just two short months later, the two tied the knot on Septem-ber 27, 2014 at the picturesque Woodbridge Golf and Country Club. “The day was perfect,” says Sheri. Though it had rained the day before, their wedding day was beautiful and sunny with a slight breeze. The birds were chirping and animals were running across the lawn, “It was like a fairytale,” adds Sheri, “I couldn’t have asked for a better day.” For Sheri, the entire day went smoothly. Her sister, Vicki Kidd did the planning, and even made her wedding dress. “We had the best guests ever.”

Wedding Day in One Word:“Unforgettable”

staN & Basil herNaNDezDecember 27th, 2014, Double Tree By Hilton, Modesto

Basil and Stan were brought together in 2005 through an online dating service. The two began chatting as friends, and before long, established a connection they knew was special. Though it took them nearly three months to meet because of differing work schedules, Basil and Stan spoke on the phone and messaged each other several times per day, Basil even writing and sending poems, until their first date. On July 1, 2005 the couple met at a steakhouse in Los Angeles, where they both lived at the time. Basil reached over, “invaded Stan’s plate” and took a piece of his steak. From that moment, they knew they were meant to be. Because of the immediate level of comfort they shared, they were “literally committed to each other from that day on.” Basil, who hails from the Manila in the Philippines and Stan, who grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania, moved to the Central Valley in 2013 after living in Los Angeles for many years. After almost a decade of holidays together, life happenings and the induction of gay marriage into federal law, the two decided it was time to make their commitment to each other official. On January 3, 2014 while on a hike at Knights Ferry near the iconic covered bridge, with the backdrop of the sunset and water, Stan proposed to Basil. “I was shocked,” says Basil, “both of us never thought we’d get the opportunity that so many others get – a wedding.” The two tied the knot on December 27th, 2014 surrounded by friends and family at the Double Tree Hotel in Modesto. “Even though we come from two different cultures, our families blended perfectly together,” says Stan. The old Hollywood glam themed ceremony was everything the couple had dreamed. The groomsmen wore Filipino red ombre barongs, while Basil’s college friend Tony sung “Collide” (a promise Tony kept to Basil for more than 15 years) as the couple walked down both sides of the aisle with their families, to then meet in the middle of the altar. Another special moment for the couple and their family was combining soil from both their family’s farms, in Manila and Pennsylvania, into a vase, and then planting a seed, uniting their cultures and signifying a new step on their life journey.

Wedding Day in One Word:“Perfect”

KatelyNN & steveN galviNJune 29, 2013, The Lincoln Farmhouse, Stockton

Katelynn and Steven met and were friends in high school. They shared an English class junior year; Steven sat right behind Katelynn who’d sometimes help him with assignments. One day during the school year Katelynn and some friends decided to prank Steven and toilet-paper his truck! Steven was very upset when he found out. However, just a few days later, figuring it may be a good opportunity, Steven asked Katelynn out. Katelynn said she had always been pretty shy around Steven, but the TP-ing definitely served to break the ice. They dated all through high school for a total of 7 years. Despite attending different colleges they maintained their relationship solidly and finished their educations. Then on Katelynn’s graduation day in May 2011 Steven popped the ques-tion. He and Katelynn were walking through Steven’s parent’s orchard in Linden late that afternoon. As they walked, Steven asked Katelynn to wait a moment. Telling Katelynn he had a rock in his shoe he knelt down on a knee and fiddled with his foot. He then reached his arm up toward her. Thinking he needed some help standing back up, Katelynn extended her hand; she didn’t realize at first, he was holding out the ring! Steven asked her to marry him and she of course accepted. The two walked back to his parent’s house and shared their happy news. Steven’s father had actually been driving in the orchard that afternoon and saw Katelynn crying after the proposal and asked what Steven had done to her; he’d proposed of course! They then drove to town and announced the news to Kateylnn’s parents. Both sets of parents were excited and very happy for them. When it came to putting the wedding together, Katelynn, her mother and sister all worked very hard together on the planning. It came together piece by piece through ideas they’d find or inspirations in magazines. She describes her wedding day as “Perfect!” Both of their large extended families were able to attend the ceremony and reception events, which is exactly what the couple wanted. Surrounded by loving family and friends their big day went just as they’d hoped.

“Perfect”

Krissy & JohN WhiteOctober 11, 2014, The Vaughn Residence

Krissy and John first met in college several years ago. The two were first introduced at Stanislaus State University, where John was a TA for Krissy’s class. They “ended up seeing each other and hanging out all the time,” says Krissy. Finally, after several attempts from John, the couple started dating. The relationship lasted a year until the two went their separate ways. Fast forward six years later, Krissy and John ran into each other while out and about, and started to spend time together again. Naturally, the two began to re-ignite their old flames, and never looked back. “I al-ways felt that he was the one for me,” says Krissy, “We always wanted to be together.” After six years of dating, John proposed to Krissy. When the time came, John and Krissy went to an Oakland A’s game, which was normal for the couple, who are big fans. Unsuspecting to Krissy, John planned to take her to one of her favorite spots afterward; Treasure Island, where they could see the lights and cityscape. After snapping some photos and enjoying the night time scenery, John grabbed Krissy’s hand and got down on one knee. Krissy was in disbelief, and being the traditional person she is, she responded by asking “are you serious? Did you ask my dad?!” But John was prepared, and of course Krissy said “Yes!” The two celebrated with champagne already cooling in John’s car, and by spending the weekend in the city. The couple tied the knot only six months later on October 11, 2014 in the stunning scenery of Krissy’s parent’s backyard surrounded by redwood trees. The couple, along with the help of their friends and family, prepared everything from the entertainment to décor themselves. Together, they made their own flower arrangements, col-lected more than 100 mismatched sets of china and vases from second hand and antique shops, and created their own signs. The bride and groom’s friends sang for their walk down the aisle and first dance, while their neighbors provided cotton candy, popcorn (the groom’s favorite) and an ice cream cart. Along with a variety of different dinner options, the couple also included a coffee bar (the bride’s favorite), a photo booth, and games. “We wanted it to be different,” says Krissy, “Everyone was in awe. The months of planning were well worth it. It was relaxed and everything came together perfectly.”

Taylor & Cole BeauChampSeptember 13, 2014, Escalon, CA

Taylor and Cole met through mutual friends at a nearby lake, Don Pedro. “As soon as we were introduced, we instantly had a connection,” says Taylor, who quickly knew that he just might be the one only a few weeks after meeting him. “I have never connected to someone like I did with him.” Cole went on a trip to Minnesota to visit family, so the two stayed connected by phone. “One day I was sitting outside chit chatting with him for about an hour (it was our first conversation via telephone) and I was just laughing away and had butterflies,” says Taylor. As soon as the conversation ended, she realized, “Wow I have never laughed that hard nor felt the way I did just from being on the phone with someone.” For her, it was a weird gut feeling, and the moment when she knew she had met her soul mate and best friend. On the day of the proposal, Taylor was awakened at 6 a.m. by Cole. “He came storm-ing through my room and said, “hurry up get dressed, it’s a beautiful day to go on a hike! “He was so excited and of course I was a turtle getting out of bed but we eventually made it out the door.” The couple made it to Brushy Peake, and when they almost reached the top, Cole said “let’s race!” When they arrived, Cole asked Taylor if she liked some water, so he turned to grab it from her backpack. “Right when he turned around to get the water he dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him. I was so shocked. It was the perfect proposal, being at the top of the mountain overlooking the beautiful Livermore Valley. The views were incredible! It was simply the best day of my life!” On their wedding day, Taylor and Cole were blessed with a breathtaking sunset and the perfect crowd to help support their love. “One special moment that stood out to me was walking down the aisle to my soon-to-be husband. Not only did I have my dad by my side but hearing the song “Magic” by Coldplay and seeing Cole at the end of the isle waiting for me made me one emotional bride. He looked so handsome and I was so anxious to say the words “I Do.” Together the couple had so much love and support from everyone.

BY ELIZABETH BORSTING

BABY, IT'S COLD OUTSIDE!

VAILColoradoIf you’ve always dreamt of a European honeymoon, but don’t have the time or money to get there why not say “I do” to a Rocky Mountain escape? After the veil has been lifted and you’ve made it official, head to Vail, Colorado, for your first escape as Mr. and Mrs. Reminiscent of the Alpine villages of Switzerland, Austria and Germany, Vail is brimming with gabled architecture, hearty fare and a rugged terrain. The village is a labyrinth of me-andering walkways, A-framed chalets, cobbled footpaths, and a heady dose of bistros and wine bars.

Honeymooners will love the plush indoor activities: nice resorts and couples’ massages. But you have to come up for air sooner or later, and that’s when you can ski, snowboard or take a sleigh ride. There’s also time for star gazing—as in celebrity sightings—where Hollywood heavyweights, like Cameron Diaz and Goldie Hawn, as well as politicos from both sides of the aisle (Al Gore and Dan Quay-le are both regular visitors) are often spotted on the slopes. But, even if you’re not a skier or snowboarder and don’t know Katy Perry from Matthew Perry, there are still plenty of reasons to put Vail at the top of your honeymoon hotlist. Why spend hours en route to Europe when you can experience an über honeymoon stateside?

WHERE To STAY:SONNENALP If Hansel and Gretel were living large, we’d expect to find them holed up at the luxe Sonnenalp staying warm by the fireplace instead of an oven. And, by all accounts, the mostly all-suite Sonnenalp (112 luxury suites and 15 hotel rooms) has all the trappings of a happily-ever-after existence. The German-run resort features a posh chalet-style vibe with breathtaking views of either the village or Gore Creek. Sequester yourself behind the door of a contemporary Bavarian chamber oozing with cozy appointments. Gas fireplaces and heated floors prove to be thoughtful touches when the temperature dips. Swing open your balcony door for an invigorating blast of fresh air. While the re-sort certainly caters to skiers with its convenient ski-in/ski-out access and ski concierge, the Sonnenalp also offers an indoor/outdoor pool, an incredible European spa, and some excellent dining and après-ski opportunities. Once the snow melts, skiing gives way to golfing on the resort’s pristine fairway. Another reason to hunker down at The Sonnenalp is the hotel staff, which has been schooled in the art of hospitality (be sure to mention that you’re honeymooners, too!) Best of all, the only transportation needed when staying here are your two legs – everything is within walking distance. www.sonnenalp.com

WHERE To EAT:THE SWISS CHALETThe name might seem a bit kitschy, but make no mistake that The Swiss Chalet is the real deal. There are plenty of good restaurants in Vail, but you won’t have to venture far to enjoy traditional European fare and the ultimate al-pine dining experience – it’s located at the Sonnenalp. The Swiss-style ambiance complements the hearty menu of Käse Spätzle, homemade Swiss dumplings crowned with cheese and crisp onions, or Wiener Schnitzel. Raclette, which is derived from the French word racler meaning to scrape, offers an interactive culinary experience where a special hibachi-looking grill is placed in the middle of the table. Each guest is given a small spatula to melt their Ra-clette cheese below the grill, while cooking their accou-trements on top. When finished, diners guests scrape their gooey cheese onto their potatoes, gherkins, cornichons, sausages and so on. Traditional fondue is also a popular item and the restaurant’s sommelier can help pair any meal with an exceptional bottle of wine. Dress code? Mountain casual of course! www.swisschalet-restaurant.com

The Perfect Plan

n BridalTrends

BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

The months and days leading to your special day will be forever cataloged in your memory. This should be one of the most exciting and enjoyable times in your life, but can often take a turn to areas of overwhelming stress. It all depends on how you plan

and execute, and who is there to help you!

THE Planner If you’re already overworked with your day-to-day responsibilities, consider hiring a professional wedding planner. After all, coordinating, making the best choices and juggling it all with style is their specialty. The guidance and expertise they provide will surely lift a weight from your shoulders, allowing you to concentrate on enjoying the process of it all, without the pressure. Not to mention, their cool, calm pres-ence, attention to detail and supervision on your big day will literally seem priceless. Of course, your mother and maid of honor are rock stars, but a talented wedding

planner can seem like superwoman at times (think Jennifer Lopez in the Wedding Planner.) They’ve done this at least a hundred times, and have preconceived

notions of possible hick-ups, and the tools to fix them on the spot. If you have the resources and budget to hire a planner, do your research! Read up on client reviews and conduct interviews to find a planner that you connect with and enjoy being around. After all, they will be a big part of your special day. Also consider requesting references from recent brides to get a better idea of the functionality and personality of your planner.

THE Bride If you are the best person to plan your wedding, keep this magazine tucked under your arm as you explore the many helpful businesses in our area. When planning a big event, organization is key. Use our

calendars and checklists to keep you on track and to avoid missing any details. Devote a notebook and record everything wed-

ding related, to have easy access to any contact numbers or information you may need. If you are blessed with ex-

tremely helpful, crafty and creative friends and family, take advantage of them! There are so many moving parts of wedding planning and you wouldn’t want to overwhelm yourself with them all. When it comes to passing the torch on specific tasks, just be sure to keep communication clear, calm and open to avoid any misunderstandings. Whichever planning route you choose, don’t forget to love the process. Time spent running errands, choosing colors and surfing the inter-

net for inspiration are all special moments leading to your special day. Don’t let tunnel vision take over, or you

will miss out on special moments that should last a lifetime. Breathe, and take it all in, for this is one of the most special

times of your life!

The Perfect Plan

THE Marriage License In the state of California, the County Clerk issues both public and con-fidential marriage licenses. You must marry within 90 days of the issue date of the license, or it will not be valid, and you must purchase an-other one. According to the California Department of Public Health, the marriage officiate or authorized individual who performs the mar-riage ceremony is required, by law, to complete the marriage license and return it to the County Recorder’s Office within 10 days of the event, for registration. Blood tests are not required to obtain a license, but both parties must appear in person and bring valid picture identifica-tion to the County Clerks Office to apply for the license. If you have been married before, you must know the specific date of divorce, and reasoning (some counties require documentation of divorce, others do not.)

CHANGING Your NameAfter receiving your marriage license, there are a few easy steps leading to your new last name. Start with the Social Security and Department of Motor Vehicles, from there, change credit cards and any others you wish. Here are officials and agencies that must be notified of your name change status:

The Bank (Checking, Savings and Loans)Bills (Utilities, Car Payments, Etc.)Insurance (Home, Vehicle, Health and Life)Motor Vehicle Registration Passport Voter Registration

I am a non-traditionalist, proudly. I don’t like being bound by what we have always done; I want to do things differently. Strangely though, I have always loved weddings that are deeply rooted in tradition; honoring family, culture, bringing together the past with the future and revering the strong bond that exists between the two. I have often felt like there are not enough weddings rich in tradition, except for other cultural weddings, which seem to revel in tradition and custom. So, I decided to explore this, and much to my surprise, everything about a modern day wedding is founded on tradition- from the proposal to the threshold.

n BridalTrends

Oh, Tradition!

BY HEATHER REAGAN

THE PROPOSAL. In Knighthood days, it was custom for a Knight to dip his knee as a show of servitude to his Mistress and his Master. A knight would kneel before a tournament and wait for “his” lady to toss him her ribbon, as an indication of her favor.

ENGAGEMENT RINGS. The custom of a wedding band dates back to ancient Egypt where Egyptians gave their brides circlets of hemp or rush- the circular band being a symbol of eternal love and unity. As it has evolved over the years, the dia-mond represents the sign of the strength of never-ending love. The origin of the ring on the third finger also dates back to the 17th century, to Christian weddings presumably, when a priest would touch the three fingers on the left hand when he re-cited “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost”. Another belief, again from ancient Egypt, is that the “ring finger” followed the vena amoris (vein of love) which runs from this finger directly to the heart.

THE BEST MAN. (This is my favorite!) This tradition originated with the Germanic Goths. A man was to choose a woman within his community to marry; however, sometimes, the women would be in short supply; therefore, the man would have to seek out and capture a bride from a neighboring community- literally, capture her.

This was not the task for one man. So, he would be accompanied by a male companion who would help him. Since this was such an important task, a two man strong-armed tac-tic, the future groom would choose the best man he knew to come along. Our “Best Man” today is a throwback to this dynamo duo. Once the bride was captured, there was a very real threat that the bride’s family would come looking for her and forcibly obtain her return, so the Best Man remained at the Groom’s side throughout the marriage ceremony, alert and well-armed. He continued his duties after the ceremony, safeguarding the entrance to the newlywed’s home.

BRIDESMAIDS & GROOMSMEN.These important roles on a wedding day have their roots in Roman law, which prescribed that ten witnesses be present at a wedding to fool evil spirits, who, it was believed, were in attendance at marriage ceremonies to cause mischief and disharmony. The Bridesmaids and Groomsmen were to dress identically to the Bride and Groom to confuse the evil spir-its.

THE KISS AT THE END OF THE CEREMONY. In ancient times, the kiss at the end of the ceremony was a binding contract! It actu-ally represented the mutual acceptance of the contract of marriage. It was said that the bride and the groom “exchanged a bit of their souls” with the breath of a kiss.

TYING THE KNOT.In ancient days, the bride and groom were lit-erally tied at the waist by wreaths to signify that they had been united. Other folklore suggests that this expression comes from the days when the bride wore a girdle that was tied in knots (before the invention of buttons, hooks, straps, etc.). On her wedding day, her attendants made sure the knots were secure but could easily be untied by the Groom to consummate the marriage.

CARRYING THE BRIDEOVER THE THRESHOLD.This came from Roman times. The Romans believed that the bride should be carried over the threshold so that the demons could not trip her and curse her with bad luck all the rest of her years.

“What an enormous magnifier is Tradition! How a thing grows in the human memory & in the human imagination, when love, worship,

and all that lies in the human heart is there to encourage it!” -Thomas Carlyle

Wedding DressWORKOUT

BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

n Back Talk W edding W orkout

You’ve chosen the venue and adorned it, spent hours contemplating which bridesmaid dress will be complimentary to all; searched for the perfect photographer to catch ev-eryone in their best light... What a selfless bride you are! Thinking of everyone before yourself. But, now that everything is in order, it’s time to focus on you, and your dress. Surely you find your dream dress months ago, and have been thinking of your final fit-ting every time you sit down to another lunch meeting with the wedding planner. Is it strapless? Is it backless? Is it form fitting? Depending on your style, certain parts of your body will be on display, and we are here to make sure those parts look their best on your special day. And, now that your day is nearing, it’s time to buckle down and tailor your workout to specifically compliment your dress!

The Hour Glass WorkoutForm-fitting styles like mermaid, trumpet and sheath dresses hug the body tight, drawing attention to your midsection, butt and thighs. You want a workout that spends extra time on the core, so that no belly bulge will be attending your wedding.

Spiderman Plank CrunchStart in a traditional plank position with your forearms on the ground and your body perfectly straight, paying extra attention to your core. While maintaining plank, bend your right knee out to the side of your body, then pull your knee up to meet your right forearm, reach-ing as far as you can. Repeat with your left knee and alternate sides for a total of 10 reps.

Seated CrunchSit on your bottom, lean back and raise your lower legs (with knees bent and calves crossed) so that your core forms a “V” shape. Hold a 5 pound medicine ball, or dumbbell, in your hands and swivel your core from left to right bringing the ball or weight across the body. Pay attention to the “V” shape at all times for the best results! Do 3 sets of 15.

Backless Beauty WorkoutOpen back wedding dresses are all the rage right now, coming in a va-riety of styles from vintage to contemporary. With all that skin show-ing, you’ll certainly want it to be toned, and here are a few tricks that will surely leave you feeling as confident as ever.

Dumbbell Bent Over RowStand with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding dumbbells in each hand with your arms at your side. Bend your knees slightly, push your hips back and bend forward from the hips, without rotating your back. With your arms extending straight in front of you, wrists facing back and knuckles forward, pull your weights straight up, meeting your hips. Squeeze your shoulder blades together while keeping your torso tight and your back flat. Slowly lower the weights to start posi-tion and begin again. 15 reps, go!

T ExtensionLie facedown with your arms directly in line with your shoulders so that your body forms a “T” shape. Begin with your arms resting on the ground and your thumbs pointing toward the ceiling. Slowly raise your arms as high as you comfortably can, and hold this posi-tion for five seconds. Release the hold and return your arms to the ground, with control. Do not flop them down, as the return is just as strengthening! 20 reps!

Sexy and Strapless WorkoutI hate armpit fat as much as the next person, and especially when bearing a cute halter or little strapless number. Why is it there?! How does it go away?! Do you poke it until it disappears? No, you do the following exercises and watch it diminish until nothing is calling away from the beauty of your strapless gown.

Plank Elbow Raises Planks not only help to strengthen your upper body and core, but this variation will beat underarm fat as well. To get into a proper plank, lay on the floor with your hands together and palms and elbows flat on the floor. Raise your body in a straight line, engaging your core as you push forward from your toes, lifting yourself off the floor. Lower your body back to the starting position and repeat 3 sets of 20 reps.

Lateral Raises Stand up straight, with a tight core, and dumbbells gripped in both hands. Raise both arms to your sides, meeting your shoulders, form-ing a straight line from dumbbell to dumbbell. Hold this controlled, straight-lined pose for two seconds before lowering with control. Continue for 3 sets of 8 reps.
