Experiential Learning at S&T
is an essential aspect of Missouri S&T’s unique
learning environment.
Missouri S&T’s Strategic Plan Lever 1.1 defines that 100% of our
undergraduate students must participate in some significant experiential
learning activity before they graduate. Implementation began
Fall Semester 2015.
The Experiential Learning Program at Missouri S&T refers to learning
stimulated by a variety of structured activities that differ significantly from the
traditional lecture format. Experiential learning activities are designed to
require students to go beyond mastering basic skills and knowledge in the
application of that material to problem solving challenges. These activities
involve collaboration and reflective learning and allow students to learn in
environments that align with their aptitudes.
Experiential Learning Guidelines
• The activity must be University sponsored or affiliated and the
student must receive written approval of the activity from their
academic advisor in the student’s degree program
• The academic advisor will ensure the activity is of significant
duration, intensity and rigor to demonstrate successful application
of learned principles
• The focus must be on “learning by doing” in a creative and
innovative activity that falls outside the realm of the traditional
lecture classroom experience and contributes significantly to
professional and personal development
• A written summary reflections piece that will document the
experience from the student’s perspective
A reflective summary is an essay in which the students examines his or her
experience of the activity. The student then writes about those experiences,
exploring how he or she has changed, developed or grown from them.
Experiential Learning Includes
• Research • Co-op • Internship • Leadership Position • Mentor/Coach/Tutor • Service Learning • Student Design Team • Study Abroad

The focus must be on “learning by doing” in a creative and innovative activity that generally falls
outside the realm of the traditional lecture classroom experience and contributes significantly to
professional and personal development.
Specifically define how the selected activity achieves the objective for experiential learning (how does it connect to and satisfy the S&T commitment to the Higher Learning
Commission as part of the Quality Initiative – the activity should be significant and the depth of learning should be well documented): ______________________________________________________________________________

Opportunities for Undergraduate
Research Experiences (OURE)
OURE engages students in faculty-guided research
projects.
Students participating in the OURE program gain an understanding of how research is conducted in their disciplines. They also learn about how to use available informational resources and how to interpret research results.

Undergraduate Research
provides students with out-of-classroom learning experiences that
help them apply classroom knowledge to solving real-world problems.
OURE students receive a $1,000.00 research stipend to support their participation and
completion of research projects.
Students are required to submit final reports at the end of the academic year and are invited to
participate in the Undergraduate Research Conference during the spring semester.
OURE
OURE Timeline
• OURE applications for 2016-17 are due March 1st, 2016 (faculty signature and OURE MOCode are required)
• End of September faculty research advisors will receive an email from UGS asking for confirmation of student progress
• Mid to late October, supply money (not to exceed $200) is transferred to the faculty research advisor OURE account and the $250 stipend is issued by check to the student
• Final stipend will be issued the end of 2017 Spring Semester ($750)
• Final reports are due to the OURE coordinator in UGS by April 1st, 2017
**Any unspent supply money (as of April 1st) will be refunded to UGS

The OURE Fellows Program The S&T OURE Fellows Program supports “interdisciplinary” undergraduate research projects on the campus.
“Interdisciplinary” research constitutes the combination of two or more academic disciplines or fields of study.
To be considered, students must meet eligibility requirements and adhere to proposal guidelines.
Selected proposals will be announced at the S&T Undergraduate Research Conference awards ceremony during the spring semester.
OURE Fellow students receive a $2,000.00 research stipend to support their participation and completion of research projects.
Students are required to submit a final report and present in the oral session at the Undergraduate Research Conference during the spring semester.

OURE Fellows Timeline
• OURE Fellows applications for 2016-17 will be due March 1, 2016 (faculty signature and MOCode are required).
• Individuals and teams will orally present their proposals before a panel of judges on April 11th at the Undergraduate Research Conference. Selected proposals will be announced at the awards ceremony that day.
• Mid to late October, supply money (not to exceed $500) is transferred to the faculty research advisor OURE account and the $700 stipend is issued by check to the student.
• Final reports will be due to the OURE coordinator in UGS in April 1, 2017.
• OURE Fellows much registers and participate in the 2016 & 2017 Undergraduate Research Conference.
• Upon completion of oral and written presentations at the 2017 Undergraduate Research Conference, final stipends will be issued the end of spring semester 2017 ($1,300).

Academic Integrity
What is academic integrity and why is it important? Missouri S&T's mission is to integrate education and research to create and convey knowledge to solve problems for our State and the technological world. Each student and alumni is part of that mission. S&T students and graduates are expected to solve these problems in morally responsible and transparent ways that don't tarnish the reputation of the institution or diminish the value of an S&T degree.
