You should think of this as the formal start of the paper. You may think of the abstract as a detached summary of the paper. The real paper starts here. Importance of clarity and preciseness: It is important to ensure that your paper is written well. A survey paper is an exercise in exposition or explanation. You will not be able to do your job satisfactorily if you write sloppily. Please note that technical writing is distinct from non-technical writing (like fiction) because the main purpose of a technical article is to convey and clarify a technical idea. Therefore, you should avoid ambiguity, suspense, grand expressions, etc. In particular, scientific writing has to be precise. In other words, you should be prepared to back up every sentence you say with evidence. If you are making some assertion, be ready to back it up with a reference. As an example of a reference, or a citation, this is a reference [1] to a classical book on English writing which you should definitely refer to. Importance of referencing other works: A survey paper should refer to many documents since its aim is to survey the state-of-the-art in a particular subject. It should refer to all important works in that particular area. Survey papers address broad topics and can easily include more than 50 (or even 100!) references [2] [3] [4]. It is important not to get intimidated by the mass of literature available on your topic of interest. You should read Keshav’s practical tips on how to read a paper [5]. II. BACKGROUNDIntroduce the topic in a logical fashion: i.e., the presentation

should flow from one topic to another. Ensure that there is noabruptness in the writing. As you begin a long section, youshould introduce the organization of that section to facilitatethe reader.

III. MAINThis is the main section of your paper. You should change

the name of this section and align it to the topic of your survey.

    A. Subsections NameFeel free to break down sections into subsections according

to the hierarchy of your ideas. Organization of the paper is veryimportant and it typically takes numerous iterations before youget it right. Do not feel overly attached to your first draft, sinceyou will find that editing it through rewriting and rearrangingwill be necessary for improved presentation.1) Sub-subsections Name: You can also have sub-

  • 2E. Devices for improving comprehensionRemember that the primary purpose of a survey and tutorial

paper is exposition. You want to introduce a broad topic to areasonably intelligent non-specialist. To make things easier forthe reader, explore using various devices for presentation.

Deciding on the best format for presentation of technicaldata is more an art than a science. You can learn a lot byreading any of the following books of Edward Tufte, availableat SEECS library [10] [11] [12].

In particular, explore using figures and tables for improvingyour presentation.

An example figure can be seen in figure ??. In general, youshould try to use .eps graphic files, and avoid .jpeg and .gifimages, due to resolution issues.

An example table can be seen in table I

IV. OPEN RESEARCH ISSUES AND FUTURE WORKThis is an extremely important section of your survey paper.

Your paper should not only present disconnected summaries ofthe individual works, but should synthesize broad insights thatapply to the overall field. This is the place where you shouldprovide the big picture of what the main research issues inyour subject area are.

Highlighting and defining research problems is a very im-portant component of research. It is said with not a lot ofexaggeration that a problem well-defined is half solved. Asyou read various papers on your subject topic, you should beable to categorize the works and identify missing gaps. Thesemissing gaps are to be highlighted in this section as potentialfuture works for research.

    V. CONCLUSIONIn this section, you should conclude the paper by reiterating

the main points of your paper. You should enlist the maincontributions of your survey paper and differentiate your workfrom existing surveys (if any) by demonstrating how your workis extending the current body of knowledge.
