ex- is a tricky prefix.
ex- says [ecks] and the [s]sound is a part of the
prefix in front of the baseword.

Compound Words
A compound word is made up of two
smaller words.e.g. anybody, anyone, anywhere, anything
Spelling Rule
Prefixes
A prefix comes at the front of a base word
and can change the meaning of a word.
dis- = opposite e.g. dislike
mis- = opposite/wrong e.g. misspell
un- = opposite/not e.g. unhappy
re- = again/back e.g. return
be- = to make happen e.g. become
ex- =out of from e.g. exit
en- = inside, into, to e.g. engage

Remember to learn the meaning of each of the
tricky words.
This will help you use the words correctly in a
sentence.
Sound/s Focus This week we revise the long ‘i’ sounds.
ie i-e igh -y on the end of pie,
tie, die, lie and magpie
To add
‘-s’ or ‘-d’ always use ‘ie’
e.g. pie + s = pies try + d = tried
in the middle of other words plus bite, kite, white, write
and quite
in the middle when a ‘t’ comes next
plus high, sigh,
thigh
on the end of other words
To add ‘-ing’ always use
‘-y’ e.g. lie + ing = lying
Plus, we have introduced words with less common letter combinations for the long ‘i’ sound. These include;
• ‘-ign’ words … sign resign design • ‘-ind’ words … mind blind kind • ‘-ild’ words … wild mild child • ‘-i-‘ words … lion idea title • ‘-y-‘ words … type cycle rhyme

Punctuation Rules Revision • Capital letter to start a sentence. • Capital letter for a proper noun. • Full stop at the end of a statement. • Question mark at the end of a question. • Comma to separate a proper noun from the word it refers

Spelling Rules Revision Rule 2 = After a short vowel, use –ll, -ff, -ss, -zz, -ck but after a long vowel, use only one –l, -f, -k, -se and –ze
Rule 3 = Use the letter ‘k’ before e, i or y
Rule 9 = Use the letters ‘-ve’ when the [v] sound is the last sound in a word ________________________________________________

Homophones are words that sound the same but have a different meaning and different spelling. e.g. might/mite sighed/side

A recount tells us about something that has already happened. It has:
1. Orientation (who, what, when, where) 2. Sequence of Events (in the order the events happened) 3. Reorientation (make personal comments about the events and you may predict future
outcomes) Remember to use adjectives, action verbs, past tense and connectives.
