IMPACT REPORT 2019-2020
It goes without saying that the 2019-2020 academic year was full of excitement, challenges and the need for unprecedented adaption. COVID-19 drastically adjusted the way that we carry out the mission of Salisbury University as we moved to remote work, learning and instruction while also dealing with a national social justice movement. Amid these challenges and changes, our students dealt with
financial hardship because of the pandemic, and, yet again, you stepped up. Through the generosity of alumni, donors and friends, we were able to provide emergency relief to our students. Your support helped with essentials like rent and access to technology so that our students could focus as much attention as possible on learning. I also heard countless stories of our alumni working on the frontlines to combat this virus. We still have nurses treating patients and researchers working on long-term solutions so that our country can have a fighting chance against this disease.
These stories of courage and ingenuity make me incredibly proud to serve as SU’s president. Finally, I saw a number of current and former students making their voices heard, advocating for change, and demanding justice and long-overdue equality in America. The messages were heard right here on campus and extended to places like D.C., Baltimore, New York and around the country. As you know, the We Are SU campaign for Salisbury University is underway, and in the last few months, I believe that I have seen what it truly means to be a part of the SU community. Thank you for investing your time, talent and treasure to support our students, faculty and staff. Best wishes for another year of growth and progress!
Charles A. Wight President Salisbury University
Dear Donors and Friends,

the University and the Foundation. • We are parents, providing for the future of young adults. • We are alumni, giving back to the institution that supported
many of us. • We are critical thinkers, being diverse in thought and unafraid to
pose hard questions. • We are teachers, sharing what we have learned with those with
open minds. • We are entrepreneurs, coaching those who wish to learn and
take risks. • We are philanthropists, seeking to promote the welfare of others. • We are stewards, shouldering the responsibility of being entrusted
to care for the resources held by our Foundation. • We utilize our vast experience, focusing on continuous
improvement while planning for the Foundation's perpetuality. • We show up and show well, utilizing the gifts of our time,
resources and knowledge to the benefit of the University. • We Are SU, supporting our students because without our students
there would be no Salisbury University.
As chair of the Salisbury University Foundation, I plan to continue to have a positive impact. I thank SU President Charles Wight and all those who support Salisbury University and its good works through the Foundation.

Student Scholarships I thank the loyal donors of Salisbury
University for granting me a
scholarship this year. The funds have
shown me how hard work can be
rewarded, and it motivated me to work
hard the entire school year.
Katie M.
Being a scholarship recipient to me
means focusing on what matters most,
which is school without the financial
burden of how I’m going to pay
tuition. Thank you for giving me this
wonderful opportunity!
Berj M.
Even though Salisbury is a relatively
small school, it has great educational
facilities and programs. I am so grateful
to the donors who help to support my
education at SU. I really couldn’t do it
without you, so thank you.
Jada J.
My favorite thing about SU is the
professors: how student-oriented they are
and how they really take care of their
students. To the many donors …
thank you again for everything!

Award Supports Classroom Libraries Two members of the Salisbury University community were named recipients of the Dr. Ernest Leighton Bond Classroom Library Award. Alumna Katie Lewis and senior Aja Cunningham were each recipients of $500 each to build diverse libraries for their future classrooms. Lewis graduated in May with a degree in elementary education and is now teaching fifth grade at Greensboro Elementary in Caroline County, MD. Cunningham graduates in December with a degree in early childhood education. She works in the childcare center at Peninsula Regional Medical Center and is student teaching first grade at Beaver Run Elementary in Salisbury. The special endowment was established in memory of the late Dr. Ernie Bond, a former SU education professor and renowned children’s literature scholar who passed away suddenly in 2016.
I love SU and I love getting to explore
new ideas and new fields that
Salisbury offers. Thank you for the
generous donations and scholarships.
It means the absolute world to me!
Leah D.
Thank you from the bottom of my
heart. Without your scholarship, I
would really have a hard time attending
SU. I am extremely grateful and so is
my family.
Makayla F.
I’m just so, so thankful for this donation.
It has really opened up a lot of
opportunities for me. I look forward to a
possible internship in Sweden my senior
year. I can’t thank you enough!
David R.
Thank you so much for all of your loyal
support to SU. I would not be able to
graduate almost debt-free if it was not for
the kind scholarships I received as a
student.

The Campaign for Salisbury University
SU Names Center for Entrepreneurship in Honor of Philanthropists Dave and Patsy Rommel In 2017, local philanthropists Dave and Patsy Rommel announced a $5.5 million gift for SU, $500,000 of which will help make Salisbury University’s planned Center for Entrepreneurship in downtown Salisbury a reality. In November 2019, the University unveiled its own gift to the Rommels, naming the new facility in their honor. The Dave and Patsy Rommel Center for Entrepreneurship is scheduled to open at SU Downtown in 2020. At the event, Dave Rommel shared: “Patsy and I are proud that this center will bear our name, and we look forward to seeing the great products, services and businesses it will help inspire.”

campaign.salisbury.edu WHY GIVE TO SU?
$250,000 Kimmerly Messick Scholarship Endowed at SU When Delmarva entrepreneur Kimmerly Messick enrolled at Salisbury University in 1975, she worked two jobs to pay for her tuition. Having made her career as a successful furniture store owner, with retail outlets in Ocean City, MD, and lower Delaware, the alumna wanted to give back to her Alma Mater to help ease financial burdens for today’s students. She achieved that goal by donating $250,000 to endow the Kimmerly Messick Scholarship at SU. “I wanted to look in the mirror, seeing someone in the same position I was in at that age, with desperation to succeed,” she said. “It’s not so much about grades, but about passion and dedication.” One of the first two recipients, Devin Phillips, strongly demonstrated those traits. Devin, a junior information systems major from Salisbury, already has started his own technology business. Kimmerly Messick with SU President Charles Wight.

Campus Spotlight
My India research visit, supported in part by the SU Foundation Professional Grant, assisted in the publication of my book Medical Humanism, Chronic Illness, and the Body in Pain: An Ecology of Wholeness. I am honored to offer courses and workshops based on its wholeness-centered model to make a positive difference in the health and well-being of our SU and Eastern Shore community and am proud to further SU’s mission of engaged teaching and scholarship.
Dr. Vinita Agarwal Associate Professor, Communication Department
Salisbury University serves a
unique role for the Eastern
Shore, Maryland and the entire
East Coast, providing regional
students as well as those from
the wider area with a quality
education that recognizes the
importance of both classroom
and campus-wide opportunities.
I thoroughly enjoy watching
undergraduate students blossom
in their academic programs and through cultural and leadership
roles, and watching graduate students develop into professionals
who continue to make immeasurable contributions to education,
government and industry. Contributing to the SU Foundation
allows me in a small way to show my appreciation to the
Salisbury University community for providing rich and
invaluable experiences – academic and personal – for me, our
students and my colleagues.
Dr. Elizabeth Curtin
Associate Professor Emerita, English Department
The SU Foundation is the glue to our football program.
Not only does the Foundation place our students and
staff in a position to succeed, but it provides necessary
apparel, equipment and technical skills needed to operate
a quality program. Thanks to the Foundation we have
mastered great success both on and off the field.

Endowment GiftsVinyard Gift Helps Make Education Affordable for All Phyllis Vinyard has always been a proud supporter of higher education. “We never stop learning,” she said. “Higher education helps us better ourselves, our families and our communities.” Vinyard, who is a member of the Salisbury University Foundation Board, believes that everyone who desires to should have the opportunity to pursue a college degree, no matter their circumstances. She put these beliefs into action in December 2019 by establishing the Vinyard Family Scholarship to support nontraditional Salisbury University students with financial need. “There are many scholarships available for graduating high school seniors entering college,” Phyllis noted. “But, once you enter the workforce for a few years and then try to go back to school, there are fewer available opportunities.” Phyllis is excited that her scholarship will support this underserved group of prospective Salisbury University students.
Nathan Foundation Scholarships Near 1.5 Million With this year’s annual gift of $40,000, the Nathan Foundation has exceeded 1.45 million dollars in scholarships for Salisbury University students since 1985. The Nathan Foundation has invested in SU students for 35 years, providing financial assistance to more than 175 Dorchester County scholars. SU is the Nathan Foundation's largest educational beneficiary, transforming the lives of our students for generations to come. The Nathan Foundation is a member of SU’s Sea Gull Society, which honors those who have given $100,000 or more to the University.

Student Emergency Fund Financial assistance is available for current students, both undergraduate and graduate, who encounter an unexpected need due to the outbreak of COVID-19 or other extenuating circumstances that could cause them to withdraw from the University. Examples of an emergency need include, but are not limited to: • Medications and additional costs
related to medical care • Books and other essential academic
expenses
• Safety needs for well-being of student
• Replacement of essential personal belongings
• Travel costs related to a death or illness in the immediate family
In April 2020, the SU Foundation had over 100 generous donations within a week support the needs of our students. Gifts to the Student Emergency Fund continue having a powerful impact on our students who require assistance as a result of the pandemic. Together, We Are SU.
