SO THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE

It is not often that the author of one of the books of the Bible comes right out and tells us directly why he is writing what he is writing. In this Sunday's Gospel reading, taken from the conclusion of John's Gospel, the author tells us that he has chosen to record these events so "that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name" (20:31).

The letter of John echoes this idea by saying that "[e]veryone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God" (5:1)--what we might refer to as being "born again." Our reading from the Acts of the Apostles for this Second Sunday of Easter shows us exactly what it looks like when believers are born again through faith. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Dear Parishioners,

Happy Easter to all of you! It has been a privilege for me to be a part of your faith journey. For the last six years, I have learned so many good things and most of them are very good and nourishing to my soul. But just like any other journey we take in our life, it will end, then we will take another one. That is part of our life. Separation can be painful but it will help us grow and become mature as a person. With that, I would like to inform you that my journey with you will end very soon. I was informed by the Vicar for Clergy in the Diocese of Sacramento a few days ago that I will be transferred to Holy Spirit Parish, Fairfield, CA, effective July 1, 2018. As most of you are aware of, I was assigned here on July 1, 2012 by our Bishop Jaime Soto, D.D., for a 6-years term as your pastor. And my term will officially end on June 30, 2018. I would like to thank all of you from the bottom of heart. It is very hard to leave the people/parishioners that I have loved but that is our call as a priest. With obedience to our superior, we have to be ready whatever tasks given to us to do for the good of the Church. Yours in Christ, Fr. Joel S. Genabia

Saints and SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sometimes children acquire nicknames in childhood that stalk them through adulthood: "Pinky," "Boo-boo," and the like. This Sunday was once called "Low Sunday," a step down from Easter glory, and an unfortunate nickname since Easter rejoicing goes on for fifty days. Traditionally this is the day when the newly baptized put away their white baptismal robes and returned to their everyday life after a week of intense celebration. Of course, the goal was to take up everyday duties with a very new point of view. A long title for the day was Dominica in albis deposito, or "The Lord's Day for Putting Away the Albs," so no wonder the nickname "Low Sunday" arose. In the old calendar it was also called "Quasimodo Sunday," after the first word of the opening chant, Quasimodo geniti infantes, or "As newborn infants," a reference to the newly baptized taken from the Epistle of Peter. Victor Hugo's bell-ringing hero in The Hunchback of Notre Dame was abandoned as an infant on the threshold of the cathedral of Paris on Low Sunday, 1467, and named "Quasimodo" for the feast.

The stone which the builders rejected had become the corner-stone. By the LORD has this been done; it is wonderful in our eyes. This is the day the LORD has made; let us be glad and

rejoice in it. Psalm118: 22-24

Segundo Domingo de Pascua 8 de Abril de

2018
