PASTOR'S NOTES FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

The church has always promoted the symbol of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. The meaning of Shepherd has changed a great deal throughout the ages. We only need to look at our art to see this. There are paintings that show the shepherd alone holding only one sheep on his shoulder, yet in other images the shepherd is surround by numerous sheep. These types of images of the shepherd often create an emotional response of warmth. But this was not the case in the time of Je-sus. The first listeners were shocked that Jesus would use the image of a shepherd to describe himself. Shepherds were generally not regarded as particularly good people—more like the scum of the earth! — so this use of imagery is a deliberate one to unsettle the listeners. This was unlike their normal expectation of shepherds—cut-throats who would run away at the first sign of danger. Unlike other shepherds, Jesus is The Good SHEPHERD! - He does not abandon His flock, He has concern for His sheep, and He will lay down His own life for His sheep. The final verses of this passage make an interesting extension to the im-age of shepherd and sheep. Unlike the “sacrificial lamb,” the good shepherd chooses to lay down his life and has the power to take it up again. Jesus’ use of the image cuts two ways: While it was a provoking image for the audience, it was also a chal-lenge to those leaders who had been charged to “shepherd” their people and behaved no better than the typical shepherd of their day. Jesus was giving them an image of what it means to be a Good Shep-herd: one who faithful, compassionate, and self-sacrificing. Pray for Priestly Vocations Today is World Day of Prayer for Vocation. Our Holy Father asks each of us to pray for an increase of church vocations, particularly that of priesthood. Pray that those whom Jesus the Good Shepherd calls to priestly ministry will respond to his call to lead the faith-ful in their baptismal call of service to his church. First Eucharist and Confirmation Candidates This May, 150 of our young ones and 70 of our Youth will be receiving the Sacraments of Eucharist and Con-firmation respectfully. Please remember to keep them in your daily prayers.

Saint Mark the Evangelist—April 25 Saint Mark the Evangelist was the author of the first synoptic Gospel. He is believed to be the same man referred to in the Acts of the Apostles as John Mark; a disciple of Jesus and John the Baptist and the cousin of St Barnabas. Mark traveled with St. Paul and St Barnabas on missionary jour-neys to preach the gospels. He was a

close companion of St Peter; it is considered that his gospel represented the teachings and memoirs of St Peter. He later traveled to Alexandria in Egypt where he continued his evangelization. The church in Alexan-dria claims that St. Mark became their first bishop and that he was eventually martyred there in the first centu-ry. As an evangelist, St Mark is often symbolized as a lion. NOTAS DEL PASTOR CUARTO DOMINGO DE PASCUA

La iglesia siempre ha promovido el símbolo de Jesús como el Buen Pastor. El significado del Buen Pastor ha cambiado mucho a través de los tiempos. Solo tenemos que mirar mucho de nuestro arte para ver esto. Hay pin-turas que muestran al pastor solo sosteniendo solo una oveja en su hombro y otras imágenes donde muestran el pastor donde está rodeado por muchas otras ovejas. Es-te tipo de imágenes del pastor a menudo crea una respuesta emocional de afecto. Pero este caso no fue en el tiempo de Jesús. Los primeros oyentes se sorprendi-eron de que Jesús usara la imagen de un pastor para describirse a sí mismo. A los pastores, en general, no se los consideraba como personas particularmente buenas, ¡más como la escoria de la tierra! - por lo que la elección de la imagen es intencional para desestabilizar a los oy-entes. A diferencia de su expectativa normal de pastores, degolladores, que huirían a la primera señal de peligro. A diferencia de otro pastor, ¡Jesús es El Buen Pastor! —El no abandona a su rebaño; Él se preocupa por sus ovejas; El dará su propia vida por sus ovejas. Invention Convention 2018 Mrs. Bradford and the Staricka and Nasry Families had

an exciting weekend in Sili-con Valley attending the 2018 Invention Convention. Sofia and Margaret were the first Southern California stu-dents, the only ones from San Diego County, and the first Catholic School students to participate in this statewide

competition. Overall, 11 inventions, created by students from 2nd to 8th grade were selected to move on to the national competition. A best of show winner was selected by Maxim Integrated, the tech company that hosted the event. The Chief Technology Officer awarded the student $500 and is pursuing a provisional patent on her behalf. Sofia received a merit award for her invention, The Sting Stunter. We are so proud of them!
