Today’s Gospel invites us to take a moment to pause to hear the voice of Jesus who says to us, “Do not be afraid, keep on believ-ing.” Feast of Saints Peter and Paul-June 29

Saint Peter and Saint Paul were two great lead-ers of the early church. Peter was a fisherman whose original name was Simon. Jesus called him and his brother Andrew to be “fishers of men”. St Peter was the leader of the apostles, selected by Jesus to be “the rock” upon which the early church was built. The Gospel according to Mark is believed to be based on Peter’s teach-ings. St Paul was originally named Saul, a man

who persecuted the early Christians. On the road to Damascus, Saul had a vision of Jesus, who told him to become a Christian and preach to the gentiles. St Paul became a tireless missionary whose ideas and thoughts made an enormous impact on the early church. Traditionally, both Peter and Paul were persecuted and executed by the Roman Emperor Nero, and their remains are believed to be buried at the Vatican. Pence Collection-Be a Witness to Charity Pope Francis, through the Peter’s Pence Collection, invites us to unite ourselves in solidarity with his works of charity toward our sisters and brothers who are in need throughout the world. In his address of March 20, 2013, Pope Francis spoke of our responsibility before the world and crea-tion. “There is much that we can do to ben-efit the poor, the needy and those who suffer, and to favor justice, promote reconciliation and build peace,” he said. Your contributions to the Peter’s Pence Collection allow our Holy Father to support victims of war and natural disasters and others most in need of assistance. Join Pope Francis and be a witness of charity in the world. Thank you in advance for your prayers and generosity. On Wednesday, July 1, I begin my seventh year as your pastor. The past six years have had, for sure, their challenges and joys. What has been constant has been your support and love, for which I am grateful. I look forward to many more years with you. Please keep me in your prayers and know that you are always in mine.

Have a great week,

Today we have Mark giving us a healing story in the middle of a healing story. The overall theme of the Gospel is that through Je-sus, God is the giver of life. First the 12 year old daughter of Jairus is dying and he asks for Jesus’ help. On the way to Jairus’ home Jesus encounters the woman who has been hemorrhaging for 12 years. The world of her time views her to be as good as dead. Be-cause of her illness she can bear no children. She seeks Jesus’ help anonymously; she does so because she knows that it is forbid-den for her to touch Jesus publicly because she is considered un-clean due to her hemorrhaging. Jesus notices that she has touched him in the midst of an overwhelming crushing crowd, and asks “Who touched me?” By doing so, Jesus draws attention to her, let-ting her know that her faith has healed her. It also makes it very clear to those around her who have shunned her over the 12 years, that she has been made clean and now may reenter society and religious participation. After 12 years of being a non-person, the widow is able to begin her life again. In other words he gives her new life! This miracle delays Jesus, so friends of Jairus inform him that his daughter is dead and not to bother Jesus anymore. Jesus re-sponds, “Do not be afraid, have faith.” A more direct translation of the Greek is “Do not be afraid, keep on believing.” Jairus does and he and Jesus continue the journey to his daughter’s bedside. Jesus arrives in the view of many to the deathbed of Jairus’ 12 year old daughter. Jesus takes the 12 year old girl’s hand and says, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” By doing so she is given new life as well! Mary Cole, pbvm tells us the importance of Mark’s use of 12, in an article in Sunday Scriptures, “The woman who has been bleeding for twelve years has been “as good as dead” to her husband and to her community. She has not been able to bear children, and since she was constantly bleeding she would not have been allowed to have marital relations with her husband, or to attend the syna-gogue. She was completely isolated. In restoring her to health, Je-sus has restored her to life within her community and made it possi-ble for her to be wife and mother. In stating that the young girl was twelve, this makes her of marriageable age and so she also is now able to be wife and mother.” Once again these two miracles point us to the fact that Jesus reach-es out to those so often neglected or ostracized by the world in which he lived: women and children. The scriptures go beyond that fact as well. Mark’s community, by the time he writes his gospel, has less and less experience of the historical Jesus. Often time they felt more his absence than his presence. So with these miracle stories Mark is reassuring his community of Jesus' faithful presence in their lives. The same may be true for us today. In times of des-pair, depression, or because of our sinfulness we might feel alone.

"God creates out of nothing. Wonderful, you say. Yes to be sure, but he does what is still more wonderful:

He makes saints out of sinners." --Søren Kierkegaard--

“We cannot be called truly ‘Catholic’ unless we hear and heed the Church’s call to serve those in need and work for justice and peace. We cannot call our-selves followers of Jesus unless we take up his mis-sion of bringing ‘good news to the poor, liberty to captives, and new sight to the blind”’ (U.S. Catholic Bishops, Communities of Salt and Light).

depresión o debido a nuestros pecados podemos sentirnos solos.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER

In today’s Second Reading, St. Paul quotes Exodus 16:18: “Whoever had much did not have more, and whoev-er had little did not have less.” On the surface this may seem confusing, but it bears a strong stewardship mes-sage for us.

One of the challenges of our society is the tendency to gather and to keep and to measure our success by possessions. Jesus told us over and over in a variety of ways that “possessions” are a major stumbling block in our journey toward holiness. Stewardship was once defined by a bishop as: 1. Following faithfully 2. Living responsibly 3. Sharing gratefully 4. Possessing loosely This, in a nutshell, is what it means to be a good stew-ard. That is the message from St. Paul, as well. As difficult as it may be for us, we need to focus on others in ser-vice more than we should try to glorify ourselves through what we may seem to have. In particular we need to focus on the “possess loosely” aspect. That is more than material items, of course. We have a ten-dency to “hang on” to traditions, people, and other things that we view as “ours.” Pope Francis cautions us, “A heart occupied with the desire to possess is a heart full of this desire, but without God.”
