Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Communal Sacrament

Sat rday, Febr ar 9, 2019 at 10:00 AM

(taken from Commentary On Today’s Second Reading)

Today is the second of three consecutive Sundays on which we hear from 1 Corinthians 12. The reading picks up where last Sunday’s left off. Recall that in last Sunday’s passage, Paul laid the groundwork for his analogy of the body which he develops in today’s passage. The groundwork he laid consisted of reminding the Corinthians that the source of their different gifts is the same Spirit.

In today’s passage, Paul begins by drawing the connection between the one Spirit and the Baptism which they all share. In Baptism, they all drank of the same Spirit and thus became members of the one body. Similar to last Sunday’s reading; after presenting his opening point, Paul then goes on to develop it in relations to something concrete the Corinthians can understand. Last Sunday, he presented them with a list of spiritual gifts. This Sunday, he speaks practically about the interrelationship of the human body and its individual parts.

The words that the personified foot and ear say (“If a foot should say…”) reflect the twofold struggle in the Corinthian community about how to handle those who boast about their spiritual gifts and how to encourage those who do not have enough self-esteem to think their gifts are worthy of the body. Both segments of the community need to understand that they belong to the one body by virtue of their Baptism. Their contributions to the body are equally significant. This is a question of self-reflection and self-identity.

At the end of the first section, on the human body, Paul asks a rhetorical question and then repeats his opening point. A good teacher, Paul uses this repetition to make sure those under his tutelage do not forget what he is trying to teach them. Paul’s intent in the second section is to lead the Corinthians to understand how they are in relationship with others in the community.

Pbro. Santiago Martin. Responsable: MARC.
