S ince many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as those who were eyewit-nesses from the beginning and ministers of the word have handed them down to us, I too have decided, after investigating everything accurately anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received. Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all. He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his cus-tom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, "Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing."

M uchos han tratado de escribir la historia de las cosas que pasaron entre nosotros, tal y como nos las trasmitieron los que las vieron desde el principio y que ayudaron en la predicación. Yo también, ilustre Teófilo, después de haberme informado minuciosa-mente de todo, desde sus principios, pensé escribírte-lo por orden, para que veas la verdad de lo que se te ha enseñado. (Después de que Jesús fue tentado por el demonio en el desierto), impulsado por el Espíritu, volvió a Gali-lea. Iba enseñando en las sinagogas; todos lo al-ababan y su fama se extendió por toda la región. Fue también a Nazaret, donde se había criado. Entró en la sinagoga, como era su costumbre hacerlo los sábados, y se levantó para hacer la lectura. Se le dio el volumen del profeta Isaías, lo desenrolló y en-contró el pasaje en que estaba escrito: El espíritu del Señor está sobre mí, porque me ha ungido para llevar a los pobres la buena nueva, para anunciar la liberación a los cautivos y la curación a los ciegos, para dar libertad a los oprimidos y proclamar el año de gracia del Señor. Enrolló el volumen, lo devolvió al encargado y se sentó. Los ojos de todos los asistentes a la sinagoga estaban fijos en él. Entonces comenzó a hablar, diciendo: “Hoy mismo se ha cumplido este pasaje de la Escritura que acaban de oír”.

Drink first of the Old Testament so as to drink afterward of the New. If you do not drink of the first you will not be able to quench your thirst at the second. Drink of the first to take your thirst away, of the second to staunch it completely... Drink of the cup of both the Old Testament and the New for in these two you drink Christ. Take away your thirst with Christ for he is the vine, he is the rock that caused water to gush forth, he is the spring of life. Drink Christ for he is “the stream whose runlets gladden the city of God”, he is peace and “from his breast flow rivers of living water”. Drink Christ to quench your thirst with the blood of your redemption and the Word of God. The Old Testament is his word and so is the New. We drink Holy Scripture and we eat it and then the eternal Word descends into the veins of the spirit and the life of the soul: “Not by bread alone does man live, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God”. Therefore, quench your thirst with this Word yet in its proper order: first drink it in the Old Testament and then, without delaying, in the New. He himself says almost insistently: “People who walk in darkness, see this great light; you who dwell in a land of death, a light has shone upon you”. So drink without delay and a great light will enlighten you: no longer the ordinary light of day, whether that of the sun or the moon, but the light that casts out the shadow of death.

Sacia tu sed en el Antiguo Testamento para, seguidamente, beber del Nuevo. Si tú no bebes del primero, no podrás beber del segundo. Bebe del primero para atenuar tu sed, del segundo para saciarla completamente... Bebe de la copa del Antiguo Testamento y del Nuevo, porque en los dos es a Cristo a quien bebes. Bebe a Cristo, porque es la vid (Jn 15,1), es la roca que hace brotar el agua (1Co, 10,3), es la fuente de la vida (Sal 36,10). Bebe a Cristo porque él es “el correr de las acequias que alegra la ciudad de Dios” (Sal 45,5), él es la paz (Ef 2,14) y “de su seno nacen los ríos de agua viva” (Jn 7,38). Bebe a Cristo para beber de la sangre de tu re-dención y del Verbo de Dios. El Antiguo Testamento es su palabra, el Nuevo lo es también. Se bebe la Santa Escritura y se la come; entonces, en las venas del espíritu y en la vida del al-ma desciende el Verbo eterno. “No sólo de pan vive el hombre, sino de toda palabra de Di-os” (Dt 8,3; Mt 4,4). Bebe, pues de este Verbo, pero en el orden conveniente. Bebe primero del Antiguo Testamento, y después, sin tardar, del Nuevo. Dice él mismo, como si tuviera prisa: “Pueblo que camina en las tinieblas, mira esta gran luz; tú, que habitas en un país de muerte, sobre ti se levanta una luz” (Is 9,1 LXX). Bebe, pues, y no esperes más y una gran luz te iluminará; no la luz normal de cada día, del sol o de la luna, sino esta luz que rechaza la sombra de la muerte.
