PASTOR’S LETTER Dear Parishioners, Today is the feast of the Epiphany. At the Nativity, the Lord manifested Himself to the Jewish people represented by the shepherds. At the Epiphany, He is manifested to the Magi from the East representing the non-Jewish people. Jesus came to save all people. To make it personal, Jesus came to save me, He came to save you. Without Jesus and His redemptive work, we would have no hope of eternal life, of going to heaven. The Magi were led to Jesus by a star. We can find Jesus today when we open our hearts to Him in prayer, when we read Scriptures, when we come and worship Him at Mass, in receiving Him in the Eucharist, and in the people around us. Jesus is the babe of Bethlehem. He is our baby. May His life grow in us this new year. May we make our relationship with Him our priority. As we begin a new year, the following excerpt from the daily liturgy may be a good reflection on the importance of personal prayer, Sunday worship, and sharing of the good news of our salvation with others.

Many of us probably do not remember our baptism, that sacrament through which we became children of God and part of the very body of Christ. If we were initiated as infants, we were too young to remember it. But hopefully all of us have been present at enough baptisms to know that after we were baptized, the minister anointed us, gave us a white garment, and finally, lit a candle from the paschal candle and handed it to one of our parents or godparents. This candle symbolizes the gift of faith we receive at baptism, a gift the minister prayed would be kept burning brightly in our hearts. It is the hope of the Church that our parents and godparents nurtured our faith until such time as we were able to seek for ourselves the sustenance our faith needs to be kept burning brightly. And what nurtures our faith? Gathering as we do for the sacred liturgy is, of course, a powerful action that sustains our faith. In this time, we are nourished by the word of God, nourished by Christ himself in the Eucharist, and we are nourished by the presence of each other - the witness we give each other that we are not alone in our desire to persevere in the journey of faith. Our personal prayer and devotion is another essential way our faith is nurtured. That time we spend one on one with God, sharing what is in our hearts and listening and getting to know the Lord better, is invaluable to sustaining that relationship that is at the heart of faith.

PASTOR’S LETTER (Continued) (Continued… daily liturgy article)

And why bother doing all these things to nurture our faith? Because, as Jesus reminds us in the Gospel, faith isn’t something that is meant to be hidden, or protected. Like a lamp, or candle, it is meant to be brought out into the open, to be exposed before others. We tend to think of faith as personal, private. And there is a personal and private dimension to it. But the reason the Lord gave us this gift of faith wasn’t just for our personal, private good. It was for the good of others, too. And to achieve that good, we need to let our faith be known, be willing to speak about and show in our actions how it shapes and influences our choices and our opinions, how we spend our time, how we treat others.

As we prepare to be nourished by Christ in the Eucharist, let us pray for the courage to share the light of our faith in the places where the Lord has chosen to lead us.

As a reminder, our monthly Healing Mass will be this Wednesday, January 6, starting with the rosary at 7:00 p.m.

I will be available for confession this week on Monday, January 4, from 2:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. in the Church and on Saturday, January 9, from 3:00 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. or any other time by appointment.

May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs.

    God love you,

    Laughter, THE BEST MEDICINE

Once a year our church group holds a sale to raise money for its youth group. At our last sale, just as we finished putting everything out, a middle-aged man arrived in a huff. Growling, he yanked two sports coats and a few suits off the clothes rack, then stomped over to the cashier, where a puzzled volunteer asked if everything was all right. “I don’t know what the world is coming to,” the man said in an injured tone, “This is the third year my wife’s given my favorite clothes to this church sale!”

    Could you benefit from Franciscan

    Spiritual Direction?

Franciscan Spiritual Direction invites all disciples to navigate a uniquely sacred path, guided by the Holy Spirit. We discern “what am I feeling; what am I learning; where is God? Am I growing; will He transform me to His purpose?” The invitation seeks to share the challenges, as well as the joys, of living. There is much to learn from an innocent man who died on a cross, yet never stops loving us. What is happening in your heart and mind? What do you want God to hear, and what is He asking of you? Kate Chandler has a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry and is certified in Franciscan Spiritual Direction. During this time, Kate is also available remotely to listen and offer insight into various ways to pray for restoration of joy and peace in our everyday lives.

Kate can be reached at [email protected] or

    781-439-4977.

Saint Joseph Parish Inner Healing Ministry

The Saint Joseph Parish Inner Healing Ministry recognizes this is a challenging and uncertain time we are living in. With many restrictions in place face to face prayer sessions are no longer an option. However through the Grace of God we have technology on our side. We will be offering virtual Inner Healing prayer sessions through Zoom video conferencing with our trained prayer ministers. Inner Healing can bring relief to our deepest fears, hurts, emotional pain, traumatic memories, tormenting thoughts, and relationship issues. If you are interested in making an appointment please email Lisa Palmere at [email protected].
