Dear Parishioners,
This weekend we begin a new liturgical year, the first Sunday of Advent. This is a time of preparation for the coming of the Lord. For many this is a very hectic time. May we all take some quiet time to reflect on what areas of our lives we need Jesus to make us more like Him. Let us remember that Jesus came to save us from our sins.
We just celebrated our Thanksgiving holiday. I hope that you all had a pleasant time with family and friends. One of the pleasant experiences is leftovers. You can still have a bit of turkey or another piece of pie. In fact, they may even taste better. I think everyone enjoys leftovers. Unfortunately, this may be what the Lord gets in our relationship with Him. Does the Lord get the leftovers in my life? I wish to pray but I have so much to do. When I do find the time, it may be late at night. I am tired and really can’t get into it. I say a short prayer and I say at least I gave Jesus a thought. This may be a time to think about Jesus getting some prime time, time that I am alert and not in a rush. In any relationship that we value, we make the time to spend with that person. It has been suggested by a spiritual writer that we make an appointment with God. A time that nothing else will take precedent. After all, we are talking about God, the God who is Father, who shepherds us and is the source of all that we need. His is the source of our life and the one who loves us unconditionally.
We also had Black Friday. We see people going to the malls to get the bargains. People spend time hunting for deals on the computer. How much time we spend chasing after the things of this world that can never quench the thirst of our spirits.
Our society has taken our holy day and made it into a holiday. Let us take back this blessed feast of the birthday of our Savior. Let us keep Christ in Christmas. Let us prepare for a great coming of Jesus into our lives. Let us have a Merry Christmas. Let us celebrate Mass on Christmas with a renewed appreciation of such a gift of the Father, His Son Jesus given to us as our Savior. May we be like the star drawing our family and friends to the manger on Christmas. Let us all invite those who have been absent from our weekly worship. That would be a great gift we give to another on Christmas.
For those who may be interested, Msgr. Frank O’Sullivan, a former pastor of St. Joseph Parish, is now residing at Winchester Nursing Center, 223 Swanton Street, Winchester, MA 01890.
A reminder that the monthly Healing Mass this Wednesday, December 2, starting with the recitation of the rosary at 7:00 p.m.
I am available for confession on Tuesday, December 1, from 6:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs. God love you,

Scriptural Teaching Scriptural Teaching Scriptural Teaching Scriptural Teaching An Inquisitive Walk through the Scripture, 104
We have spent one hundred weeks considering God’s revelation to bring us to union with Him. We began with consideration of basic pagan and creation religions. God has always been present to humans and from the beginning of human life God has gradually revealed His plan for humans and all creation. With creation religions, God made humans aware that humans are creatures and “earthly.” With Hinduism and other religions that proclaimed “personal gods,” the Lord made known the possibility of having a personal relationship with an Unseen God. In Buddhism and other non-god “religions,” God revealed something of what it is to be human, in particular, the need to be “awake,” Buddha. We considered the Promise made to Adam and Eve and the Covenant with Noah in these contexts. Then God revealed to Abram that He is One and began to make known His plan for a Messiah to save us from sin and death. God had to gradually reveal Himself as well as revealing us humans to ourselves if we are to have the freedom to accept or reject Him.
God formed a people from Abraham through Isaac through Jacob/Israel. He established a Covenant with Moses and the people of Israel and later said the Messiah would come from the Tribe of Judah, of the line of David. Over the course of centuries God set out certain criteria which the Messiah would fulfill so that we would be able to identify Him and pledge our fealty to Him. Jesus alone fulfilled all the criteria and so manifested that God is indeed One but also a Trinity of Love, a family if you will. And God invites us into His family of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Jesus used parables to tell us to be awake and St. Paul put it succinctly when he wrote: “And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ….” (Roms. 13:11-14)
We have covered much - but so very little. We must continue study and pray so that we can fulfill St. Peter’s exhortation: “Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence.” (1 Pet. 3:15)
To learn more of God’s revelation, get a good Bible, read the sacred text and check out the footnotes and cross references. Then pray sincerely and the Lord will inform. Jesus is Lord. He fulfilled and continues to fulfill prophecies. No other can do so. No religion that comes after Jesus - denying Jesus as being the Son of God and denying the efficacy of His death and resurrection - can offer any true hope of salvation. On December 8th, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, we will begin a Holy Year of Mercy. We will seek to enter into the Heart of Mercy, the Sacred Heart of Jesus and it will be the Immaculate Heart of Mary which will assist us.

What is the Advent Wreath? The Advent wreath, or Advent crown, is a Christian tradition that symbolizes the passage of the four weeks of Advent in the liturgical calendar of the church. It is usually a horizontal evergreen wreath with four candles. Beginning with the First Sunday of Advent, the lighting of a candle can be accompanied by a Bible reading and prayers. An additional candle is lit during each subsequent week with a rose candle on the third Sunday to signify Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete Sunday signifies the church has passed the midpoint of Advent when the Church lightens the mood a little and the priest may wear rose vestments. The change in color provides us with encouragement to continue our spiritual preparation—especially prayer and fasting - for Christmas. Many Advent wreaths include a fifth, Christ candle which is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. The custom is observed both in family settings and at public church services.
Cenacle of the Marian Movement of Priests St. Joseph Parish is answering Our Lady’s call. Please join us as we hold our monthly cenacle, on the 1st Saturday of each month at 9:30 a.m. in the chapel after the 9:00 a.m. Mass. We are asked to meet at least once a month, say a rosary together,
pray special prayers for our Pope and read one or more of our Lady’s messages given to Fr. Gobbi. We also make an Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. We hope you can join us. If you have any questions, please contact: Sharon Keith (781) 245-5770.

CHRISTMAS GIVING TREES It is almost time for our annual Christmas Giving Tree Program that provides closing, toys, food and department store/food store gift
certificates, and fuel assistance checks for the needy among us. The Trees will be set up in the foyer with tags attached. There will also be a Mitten Tree where mittens, gloves, white cotton socks, hats and scarves are collected for the homeless. We ask that you select a tag(s) of your choice and return the unwrapped gifts the weekend of December 5th and 6th with the tag attached. Please place gift certificates in a marked envelope and hand them to a volunteer or turn them into the rectory to prevent loss. Donations of wrapping paper are welcome and appreciated. As always, thank you for your overwhelming generosity to this program. Additional help is needed between masses to help sort the gifts on the weekend that gifts are due. If you can spare a few hours, please contact Rose Finn at 781-258-4164 ([email protected]) or Janet Rivers @ 781-910-5011. Boy Scout Troop 701 has many long standing traditions,
and one of them is its annual wreath sale. The troop decorates and sells Christmas Wreaths each year in order to fund their meetings, advancements, and outdoor programs. Scouts will
be selling wreaths here at St. Joseph’s on Saturday, November 28 after the 4:00 Mass, and on Sunday, November 29 after the 9:00, 11:00 and 5:30 Masses. The wreaths are a standard door size (12” measuring the inside ring). The cost is $12 for undecorated or $15 for decorated. Decorated wreaths include 2 pinecone bunches, berries and a beautiful handmade bow.
