St Rita of Cascia wanted to dedicate her life to Christ but her parents insisted she marry. Out of obedience, at the age of twelve she married a man who was harsh and cruel but she responded with kindness and patience. She had two sons she loved very much. She later won her husband over and lived in happiness. There was constant strife between families at the time and her husband was murdered by an opposing family. Rita pleaded with her sons not to seek revenge. She prayed that they would not do so. Within a year they fell ill and died. But they died in a state of grace, without blood on their hands. She then tried to enter the Augustinian convent but some of the nuns belonged to the opposing family that killed her husband so to keep the peace she was denied. Disappointed, she prayed, and by her spirit of forgiveness and charity she was allowed to enter the convent. Rita was devoted to the crucified Christ and she prayed that she could share in the Lord’s sufferings. One day she received a visible wound on her forehead, as if a thorn from the crown Jesus wore struck her head. It was a sign of her closeness to Christ. He did not abandon her but gave her all she asked for and she persisted in her works of charity, forgiveness and devotion. St Rita is a powerful friend to those in need especially “impossible” situations in the family. Her response to abuse by kindness and forgiveness won over her husband and her prayer saved her sons from sin and certain violent death, instead they had a happy death. While this may seem little consolation, remember that in the 15th century medicine was limited to leeches, purgatives and emetics. Prayer: O Holy Patroness of those in need, St. Rita, whose pleadings before thy Divine Lord are almost irresistible, who for thy lavishness in granting favors hast been called the Advocate of the Hopeless and even of the Impossible; St. Rita, so humble, so pure, so mortified, so patient and of such compassionate love for thy Crucified Jesus that thou couldst obtain from Him whatsoever thou askest, on account of which all confidently have recourse to thee expecting, if not always relief, at least comfort; be propitious to our petition, showing thy power with God on behalf of thy suppliant; be lavish to us, as thou hast been in so many wonderful cases, for the greater glory of God, for the spreading of thine own devotion, and for the consolation of those who trust in thee. We promise, if our petition is granted, to glorify thee by making known thy favor, to bless and sing thy praises forever. Relying then upon thy merits and power before the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we pray thee grant that [here mention your petition]. Pray for us, O holy St. Rita, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

The Bread and Wine that are being offered at our Eucharistic Celebration this week are in loving memory of Barbara & Linda Narsavage. This is a gift from Tom Narsavage & family.

A Message from Pastor Fr. Michael Fragoso

Parish Intention of the month That we reflect this month on the passion of Jesus, recalling that without His cross, and ours as well, there can be no resurrection.

Chrism Mass Monday, March 26th

Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi, Metuchen 7:30 pm

Bishop James F Checchio will celebrate the Chrism Mass with the priests of the Diocese. At this Mass, the Bishop will bless the Holy Oils which each parish receives for the rites of anointing. Saint Ambrose [340-397] began this custom-which we now call the Chrism Mass-in his Cathedral in Milan. These Holy Oils, which are used to sanctify the Faithful, have been channels of holiness for centuries! The Oil of Catechumens is used to anoint infants and adults before their Baptism; the Oil of the Sick is used on the forehead and hands of the infirmed in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick; and Sacred Chrism is used to anoint the head of the newly baptized, the foreheads of confirmandi, the hands of a priest at his ordination, the head of a bishop at his ordination, and the altar and walls of new churches. At the Mass, all priests make a Renewal of Commitment to Priestly Service, recommitting themselves to their Bishop and to their ministry to God and His People; the Bishop and all Priests then ask the people for a pledge of their prayerful support. All are strongly encouraged to join in the ancient, grace-filled Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi.
