STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT: Today’s theme is perseverance. Moses keeping his hands upraised throughout the battle, Paul urging Timothy to stay with the task of preaching and teaching and the widow appealing to the corrupt judge. To be faithful stewards of God’s gifts, we too must persevere in the roles to which we are called.

SCRIPTURAL REFLECTION: The widow in today’s Gospel, persevered because she believed she would be heard. In our families, we persevere in relationships because we believe in each other. Whether it is perseverance in resolving a conflict or parenting a child, perseverance is always an act of faith in the love and commitment, which bonds us together.

ST. EDWARD HEALTH MINISTRY will be setting up a display during the month of November as a memorial for our beloved dead. Please bring in your framed standing photos the weekends of October 16/17 & 23/24. Tags will be attached to your photos and a box in which to put them in is in the elevator room. Pick up photos on Nov 27/28.

THE BOOK OF THE DECEASED will be displayed in the baptismal area for the weekend of October 30/31. During this time, you are encouraged to enter the names of your loved ones, family and friends who have gone before us to our loving Father.

ST EDWARD THE CONFESSOR was born in 1003. He was a nephew of the Duke of Normandy with whom he was sent to live at the age of 10. During his childhood, Edward delighted in assisting at Mass and at the church offices. He was called by acclamation to the throne in 1042 and his reign was one of almost unbroken peace. Always placing great emphasis on the welfare of the people, Edward has been remembered since his death in 1066 for not imposing taxes on his people and for the so-called “good St. Edward’s laws.” St. Edward was canonized by Pope Alexander III in 1161 and his feast day is October 13th, the day on which, in 1163, his incorrupt body was solemnly transferred to Westminster Abbey by St. Thomas of Canterbury in the presence of King Henry II.

ADAMS APPLE: How did the voice box of the throat come to be called an “Adam’s apple?” The term is an allusion to the story of the Garden of Eden. Supposedly, a piece of the forbidden fruit stuck in Adam’s throat and created his “Adam’s apple” –but women have them too.
