TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Marriage is ideally a parish event today, but in the first three centuries of the church’s history, it was a household celebration guided by civil law and pagan customs. Changes happened quickly after the Peace of Constan-tine in 312, and the fresh air after long persecution brought some creativity. The speech that the father of the groom’s family gave before dinner or the veiling or crown-ing of the bride (or even the spouse’s arrival at the honey-moon suite) attracted a prayer of blessing. With amazing rapidity, worship was propelled out of the intimate setting of house churches to large public gathering spaces, and some parts of the marriage cere-mony began to migrate with the growing community to the new spaces. In Rome, the veiling of the bride with the customary daily headgear of a married woman became the central liturgical act, accompanied by a biblical prayer for her integrity and fruitfulness. There were no vows as such (just as there are no vows to this day in the Orthodox marriage rite). In the liturgy, after hearing John’s Gospel account of the wedding at Cana, the bride was veiled and blessed, and the priest gave the kiss of peace to the hus-band, who then gave it to his bride. The liturgy of Rome traveled far, and everywhere it went, marriage became a church celebration.

Pentecost Sunday A SIGNIFICANT DAY “And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were” (Acts 2:2). The Holy Spirit’s arrival on that first Pentecost was signaled by a rush of wind. We all know what it’s like when our windows are open just as a summer storm rises up. Curtains fly, papers be-come airborne, house plants shudder, dust is scat-tered. A rush of wind disrupts the orderliness of our home. The coming of the Holy Spirit, as celebrated each year at Pentecost, can also disrupt ways that have become comfortable and orderly. The Church always needs Pentecost. We need the breath of God’s Spirit to blow away any complacency or ma-laise that has settled into our faith. Jesus breathes on his disciples and they receive the Holy Spirit. Chúa Thánh Thần Hiện Xuống Phúc Âm: Ga 20, 19-23 "Như Cha đã sai Thầy, Thầy cũng sai các con: Các con hãy

nhận lấy Thánh Thần"

Lắng nghe sứ điệp của bài Tin Mừng:

Chúng ta có thể hình dung khung cảnh Chúa Phục sinh hiện ra với các môn đệ. Sau khi đã đánh tan đi mọi sợ hãi và làm cho tâm hồn họ vui mừng để sẵn sàng đón nhận lệnh truyền của Người, Chúa Giê-su nói với họ: “Như Chúa Cha đã sai Thầy, thì Thầy cũng sai anh em”. Rồi Người tiếp: “Anh em hãy nhận lấy Thánh Thần”. Như thế, rõ ràng là việc sai đi liên kết chặt chẽ với việc nhận lấy Thánh Thần. Nói cách khác, không thể ra đi thi hành sứ mệnh nếu không nhận lấy Thánh Thần. Đó chính là sứ điệp của bài Tin Mừng hôm nay.

Sống sứ điệp Tin Mừng:

Phải thú nhận là ý thức “được sai đi” dường như quá mờ nhạt trong nhiều người chúng ta. Có lẽ chính vì thế mà chúng ta không nhận ra tầm quan trọng của quyền năng và sự dẫn dắt của Chúa Thánh Thần trong cuộc sống mình. Nói khác đi, chúng ta sống đời Ki-tô hữu giống như là không có sự hiện diện của Chúa Thánh Thần vậy! Làm sao cứu vãn tình trạng nguy hiểm này? Làm sao làm sống dậy ý thức chúng ta là “đền thờ Chúa Thánh Thần” và cảm nghiệm được sự dẫn dắt của Người? Chúng ta hãy nhìn vào sinh hoạt và sự phát triển của Giáo Hội qua bao thế kỷ. Từ những vị giáo hoàng vĩ đại cho tới những giáo dân khiêm tốn vô danh, từ những thành công cho tới thất bại, thậm chí cả trong những nhục nhã, đáng tiếc của lịch sử Giáo Hội. Đều là có bàn tay Chúa Thánh Thần cả! Chúng ta hãy nhìn vào đời sống cá nhân của mình, chắc chắn sẽ nhận ra những tình huống, những biến cố mang dấu vết Chúa Thánh Thần. Thí dụ một lần chúng ta vượt qua được cơn cám dỗ trầm trọng, một lần chúng ta có được một quyết định khôn ngoan, một lần chúng ta đã có thể tha thứ… Rất nhiều cơ hội nhắc nhở chúng ta rằng Chúa Thánh Thần hằng ở trong chúng ta!

Vào cuối tuần của ngày 30-31 tháng năm, 2015, tất cả giáo dân thuộc Giáo phận Orange sẽ có cơ hội để đóng góp cho cuộc quyên góp cho Các Giáo Xứ Cần Trợ Giúp. Mục đích của cuộc quyên góp này là nhằm giúp đỡ các giáo xứ trong Giáo Phận Orange đang có những nhu cầu cần thiết (chẳng hạn như tu sửa và bảo trì phòng ốc) nhưng không có khả năng trang trải được bằng những thu nhập bình thường. Tất cả mọi đóng góp cho cuộc quyên góp này sẽ được chuyển vào một quỹ riêng và được quản trị bởi một ủy ban gồm những giáo dân và linh mục trong địa phận. Những giáo xứ có nhu cầu như được nêu trên sẽ nộp đơn để nhận được sự trợ giúp từ quỹ này cho những công việc mà đã được đề ra. Gần đây, ủy ban quản trị đang tập trung vào việc dành ra một ngân quỹ để tu sửa hệ thống điện và nước cho được an tòan trong trường hợp khẩn cấp. Bằng cách tham gia trong cuộc quyên góp cho Các Giáo Xứ Cần Trợ Giúp này, tất cả các giáo dân trong Giáo Phận Orange đang giúp đỡ lẫn nhau trong tình tương thân tương ái, nhất là giúp cho những giáo xứ đang gặp những khó khăn về tài chánh có thể thực hiện được những công việc chính đáng cần thiết. Xin chân thành cảm tạ lòng quảng đại của quý vị.

LỜI NGUYỆN

Lạy Thiên Chúa là đấng rất trung tín và nhân từ, xin hãy lắng nghe lời chúng con cầu xin cho những ai đang phải đương đầu với những khó khăn về tài chánh trong các giáo xứ, xin cho họ được thêm sức mạnh qua lời cầu nguyện và được nâng đỡ từ những trợ giúp vật chất của chúng con. Lạy Thiên Chúa là đấng rất trung tín và nhân từ, xin hãy lắng nghe lời chúng con cầu xin cho những giáo xứ đang cần sự trợ giúp về tài chánh trong Giáo Phận Orange. Những giáo xứ không đủ ngân quỹ để bảo tồn những chương trình thiết yếu trong giáo xứ, xin cho họ được vững mạnh hơn nhờ lời cầu nguyện và sự đóng góp của chúng con trong lần quyên góp đặc biệt hôm nay.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Después de los eventos del Viernes Santo los discípulos se encerraron en el Cenáculo porque tenían mucho miedo. Esta-ban precisamente ahí, donde habían celebrado la Última Ce-na con Jesús. Según los relatos que nos presentan los evan-gelios, Jesús se les aparecería en ese mismo lugar. De he-cho, cuarenta días después de su muerte, Jesús ascendió al cielo. Luego de que Jesús ascendiera al cielo, los discípulos se quedaron atónitos viendo hacia arriba. El famoso “Himno a la alegría” nos invita a ver “más allá de las estrellas”. Sin em-bargo, los ángeles le dicen a los seguidores de Cristo que dejen de ver las nubes y se pongan a trabajar (Hechos 1:11). Al regresar a su Padre, Jesucristo envió su Espíritu sobre la comunidad cristiana primitiva haciéndolos testigos de su resurrección. PROCLAMA EL EVANGELIO

Hoy celebramos uno de los dogmas de nues-tro Credo: que el Señor ascendió a los cielos. Del Evangelio de san Marcos escuchamos las últimas palabras que Jesús les dirigió a sus discípulos momentos antes de ascender a los cielos. Fueron palabras con un encargo, no menos real para nosotros que para los discípulos de enton-ces. Jesús nos encarga: “Vayan por todo el mundo y prediquen el Evangelio a toda criatura”. Para la gran mayoría de nosotros, esto significa que proclamamos el Evangelio con el testimonio de nuestra vida diaria. Cuando tratamos a otros con dignidad y res-peto, ayudamos a los menos afortunados que nosotros, actua-mos corresponsablemente con los muchos dones que hemos recibido, y nos reunimos como familia de Dios para adorar y ala-bar al Padre –todas estas son señales de que el Evangelio ha echado raíces en nuestras vidas.
