award winner), take a moment to realize that Santa Barbara is a special place whose beauty has been created by generations who have been dedicated to creating, preserving, and enriching its wonderful environment.

At this annual Santa Barbara Beautiful Awards Ceremony we have gathered to honor those who make our community special and to celebrate an important milestone in our organization’s history. We Celebrate 50 years of beautification! All around you are those who have participated in some way in making Santa Barbara beautiful or in supporting those who make it a healthy, living, creative environment for everyone to enjoy.

For 50 years Santa Barbara Beautiful has been building a legacy of community beautification. in 1965, Catherine Adams, Mayor don MacGillivray, pearl Chase, and others started to actively care about how the community presented itself—in its street trees, architecture, landscape design, and gardens. Since that initial urge to beautify emerged, what started as a trend has grown into a lifestyle.

today, as we celebrate our golden anniversary, we can look back and can be proud of how far we have come and look forward to continuing our tradition of beautification and community collaboration for years to come.

dedicated to encouraging community engagement and inspiring volunteerism and grassroots involvement in beautification, Santa Barbara Beautiful has helped to realize a number of noteworthy projects and programs this year through beneficial partnerships and funding support with multiple organizations.

this spirit of collaboration is evident in our continued participation in downtown Santa Barbara’s flag program and the i Madonnari italian Chalk festival. (funding for the City Street trees

program is currently on hold due to the drought.) i’m particularly proud of the efforts of our organization in instilling an interest in trees and the environment through our Arbor day book donations to local schools and public libraries and a scholarship program for Santa Barbara City College students pursuing education in

horticulture.this year, through our Community Grant program,

Santa Barbara Beautiful funded several noteworthy projects such as the Milpas Community Association’s “yes We Can!,” Braille institute’s torrey pine replacement, la Cumbre Junior High School foundation’s landscape and entry to their performance art center, the Bicentennial Friendship (dolphin) Fountain renovation, and youth interactive’s State Street post Card Murals. in honor of our 50th anniversary, Santa Barbara Beautiful approved a $50,000 grant to the Santa Barbara Community Arts Workshop gates.

i am proud of our Board of directors, as their energy, commitment, and dedication are just some reasons why Santa Barbara Beautiful is 50 years strong. A big “thank you!” to the Awards Committee who has made this evening so special: Co-Chairs Jo Ann Mermis and ricardo Castellanos, as well as dana Morrow at roadShow Media. i also want to thank the many hours provided by our amazing property Award Judges who included community leaders, art historians, real estate professionals, architects, landscape architects, and planners, as well as our talented group of voice-over narrators. i would also like to thank our generous sponsors for helping to make this evening possible.

And, finally, congratulations to all of this year’s Award Winners. you have made a difference in this beautiful place.

— Jeanette Casillas President, Santa Barbara Beautiful

Sonos Inc.

An iMAGinAtion CApturinG urBAn ViBe, created with planes of natural wood,

metal, glass, and drought tolerant plantings, along with plenty of sweat and creativity has emerged as an important characteristic of the President’s Award recipient this year, 614 Chapala Street. it’s a millennial nuance originating at Sonos, the company that creates smart hiFi wireless speakers and audio component systems, uniting our digital music collections, all under the control of a smart phone app.

As Sonos is changing the landscape of the way people listen to music, they’re also re-visioning the way Santa Barbarans work by contributing to the relationship we have to our environment. Sonos makes its

presence known, in part, with its work culture philosophy. At its core, the team works to

shift expectations and redefine realities, thus a hi-tech giant locates its headquarters in Santa Barbara, occupying a series of commercial retail warehouses at the center of downtown, rather than Silicon Valley.

the company, founded in 2002 by John Macfarlane, Craig Shelburne, and thomas Cullen, is based in Santa Barbara. it is growing fast, its physical footprint includes over 100,000 square feet of space in Santa Barbara, as well as offices in Massachusetts; the netherlands; China; and Malaysia. locally, they’ve selected buildings that are within walking distance to shops and restaurants. then they give their employees incentives to bike to work. the goal is to create an urban campus that reflects the brand’s worldview and to positively influence downtown.

top of the list last year, Shubin + donaldson Architects finished construction on one of the four warehouse spaces, the 22,000 square-foot building located at 614 Chapala Street (formerly occupied by Samy's Camera and once a car dealership). this space is Sonos’ headquarters, housing executive management, marketing, human resources, finance, it, and software development teams. to amplify creativity, communication, and teamwork, Shubin + donaldson implemented an open floor plan with maximum natural lighting. exterior patios take advantage of the Southern California indoor/outdoor lifestyle and create impromptu meeting spaces. Programmatic elements include club lounges, enclosed collaboration spaces, flex desking, experience rooms, and play areas.

other Sonos buildings include a 28,000 square-foot space

at 419 State Street and a 47,000 square-foot building at 25 east Mason Street.

Sonos has found its feet locally and is contributing to Santa Barbara's vibrant community in various ways, including employing more than 400 people in downtown Santa Barbara.

While its visual and economic footprint is big and beautiful, Sonos’ programs support reducing their carbon footprint. Understanding that the Santa Barbara lifestyle is about relationship with the natural world as well as fun in the sun, Sonos encourages its employees to commute via bicycle, and even pays its employees to buy new bikes and gear via its earn-a-Bike program. Already Sonos’ successes are being lauded by organizations like traffic Solutions and CycleMAynia.

Private Residence, Front Yard Native Garden2014 Garden Street

due to our onGoinG drouGHt ConditionS, awareness of the beneficial role native landscapes can

play in supporting water conservation and wildlife habitat has never been greater. With this in mind, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden established the native Choice Award to recognize leadership by an individual or organization in the use of California native plants in a designed landscape in 2014. this year we were especially pleased to consider a number of private residential and business garden renovations, a nature trail, and even a municipal golf course native habitat restoration project. Ultimately, we selected a beautiful, mature residential landscape that made California native plants a priority long before our current drought concerns. Congratulations to Virginia Gardner and her 2014 Garden Street residence for serving as a model for us all!

A beautiful example of an eclectic design sense developing over 15 years, Virginia gardner’s front yard garden shows off some of the best landscaping plants from California’s unique and diverse flora. towering wild cherry, manzanita, blue elderberry, oak, California buckeye, and even an exotic palm are clustered in spots within this narrow residential lot. Leaning outward, they show some of the best architectural qualities these plants have to offer and also leave a great deal of room for lower shrubs which give color and interest over a long season, like Palmer’s mallow, island buckwheat, purple

sage, Ceanothus ‘puget Blue’ and California buckwheat. originally designed by terra edwards, homeowner gardner has continued to experiment over the last decade or more, especially delighted by the unexpected gifts brought by birds – new seedlings of toyon and oak, some of which occurred right where they look best!

Gaviota Coast Conservancy

Playa de Santa Barbara Award for Environmental Stewardship

An AdVoCACy Group repreSentinG one of CAliforniA'S rAre, undeVeloped rurAl

CoAStlineS, the Gaviota Coast Conservancy, has earned Santa Barbara Beautiful’s 2015 Playa de Santa Barbara Award.

the Gaviota Coast, spanning from the crestline of the Santa ynez Mountains to the ocean, from Coal oil point/uCSB West Campus to the southerly third of Vandenberg Air force Base, is continuously threatened by major suburban sprawl, industrial development, new off-shore oil production platforms adjacent to sensitive habitats, sacred sites, and coastal access trails. the Gaviota Coast Conservancy (GCC) has responded

with a dedication to protecting and preserving this unique local, known as the gaviota Coast as a natural, working rural landscape.

to meet the challenge and preserve Gaviota Coast’s heritage, the GCC has employed long-term strategies to permanently protect the unique strip of land and beach. they host Coastal Clean-up days, informational Panel discussions, and Paddles for Paradise as well as creating educational resources and advocacy initiatives.

With the tragic May 19, 2015 refugio Beach oil Spill caused by a plains All-American on-shore oil pipeline rupture, over 140,000 gallons of oil poured over land then flowing to the ocean, GCC’s immediate engagement in information dissemination and mobilization of clean-up volunteers (along with other environmental organizations) captured national and international media attention. our community had not experienced such an environmental horror since the January 29, 1969 Union oil platform blowout off Summerland spreading 200,000 gallons of crude oil along the Santa Barbara coastline. Many attribute the 1969 oil spill with igniting “the

environmental movement.” leadership in Washington d.C. at that time was reported saying that “the Santa Barbara incident touched the conscience of the American people."

the Gaviota Coast Conservancy, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, is the only organization exclusively dedicated to maintaining the Gaviota Coast as a natural, working rural landscape. it does so with an all-volunteer organization and only one part-time paid staff member and a bookkeeper as support.

GCC’s work includes advocating for preservation of working rural landscapes and marine ecosystems that are intimately tied to their terrestrial counterparts - what takes place on land can have profound effects on neighboring watersheds.

the GCC has published the third edition of its resource Book entitled Preserving Our Coastal Heritage, which contains a visual and textual introduction to the environmental and cultural resources of the Gaviota Coast. GCC hopes that a wider distribution of this material will enhance the public's appreciation of our unique and valuable coastal environment.

ALWAyS engAged With hiS FAMiLy And CoMMunity with an active and positive outlook,

Courtney lodge Seeple passed away unexpectedly on February 18, 2015, at the age of 66 at his home in Santa Barbara. husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, Courtney was a family man who loved life. He is survived by his wife Alix; son Justin; daughter devon; sister Kim; and grandchildren emmy, Jackson, Maggie, and Skyler.

Courtney appreciated the beauty of the world he loved to explore. he enjoyed walking the beach, traveling, hiking, sailing, swimming, fishing, beautiful gardens, fine wine, and great music. his eclectic taste in music spanned the likes of ry Cooder and neil young, to Motown and Smokey robinson. recently he even decided to try his hand at the ukulele.

Courtney easily drew people into comfortable rapport, with his sensitivity, compassion, and quirky sense of humor.

Courtney grew up in California in Van nuys where he attended Birmingham High School. He graduated from Cal State university northridge in urban planning and did graduate work at uClA.

he had a long and successful career in real estate development that spanned from 1971 to the present. From his first jobs in

Australia and Los Angeles in the 1970s to the Bay Area during the 1980s and ’90s, to Santa Barbara during the 2000s, Courtney

actively engaged the community. this was reflected in his non-profit work as well.

Courtney joined the Board of directors of Santa Barbara Beautiful after learning about the group when he and Alix received an award from them for their beautiful new landscaping in 2000, shortly after they relocated to Santa Barbara. he also became involved in several Santa Barbara Beautiful committees and eventually rose to be president of the organization, serving in 2007 and 2008. After his time as president, he continued to serve, working on the Ways & Means, Annual Awards, and fundraising Committees until he retired from the organization to travel. he particularly

enjoyed assisting schools with beautification projects.locally, Courtney worked as a Vice president, project

Management at the towbes group, inc.during his time in Santa Barbara, Courtney fundraised for

local candidates and supported environmental causes. What caused the brightest sparkle in his eye during

recent years, though, were the special times he spent with his grandchildren. Courtney loved them dearly.

Santa Barbara Beautiful: The Early Years

A Meeting was held on September 9, 1965 at City Hall for the purpose of establishing Santa Barbara Beautiful (SBB)

as the name of a new developing organization. the founder, Mrs. Catherine Adams, was present, and the founding committee included Mahlon read, chairman; Miss pearl Chase (City plans & Planting); r. Peter krupszak, Secretary (ge–tempo); Stan

C. lowry (Chamber of Commerce); and Michael Pahos, city landscape architect. At this meeting Miss Chase offered a quotation from Abraham lincoln that says “i like to see a man proud of the place where he lives.” She said she felt a motto could help to crystallize community thinking and stimulate interest. thus the idea for Santa Barbara Beautiful took root.

Santa Barbara Beautiful was formally inaugurated at a dinner which took place days later, on September 15, 1965 at the Miramar,

launching the active, achievement-oriented civic organization. the fledgling organization with r. Peter krupszak as

president, held its first meeting in 1966 on January 19 at el Paseo green room. By September of 1966, Santa Barbara Beautiful had 17 Board members.

the first awards program was carried out by the organization in 1966. that year commercial and industrial firms were recognized, as there was a need to encourage improvement. the judges included architects, landscape designers, and laymen active in garden clubs. the awards certificate, designed by James “Bud” Bottoms, was used at this first affair.

At the annual awards banquet 1979, Mayor Shiffman expressed his high regard to SBB for calling the public’s attention to the importance of recognizing projects of beauty in the community. He noted that the program “was done without taxation, essentially a love offering from private citizens.”

For many years, Santa Barbara Beautiful commemorated dr. pearl Chase’s birthday as a part of the program during the annual awards banquets. roses from the Mission rose garden were used to decorate every table.

the story of the life of dr. Chase (1888–1979) is very well known, but perhaps it is not so well known that she was one of the founding members of Santa Barbara Beautiful. She was an active participating member of the Board of directors down through the years. her contributions were many.

Both dr. pearl Chase and Jim Hodges dearly loved trees and all growing things, and they strongly supported the Street tree planting program. Consequently, the Board of directors of Santa Barbara Beautiful established a “tree replacement Memorial fund” to honor these two board members. Approximately 300 street trees are lost every year due to disease, old age, weather, or vandalism, so this ongoing fund will serve to assure the replacement of the lost trees.

dUring the LASt 50 yeArS of work in and around the City of Santa Barbara, the community has witnessed

Santa Barbara Beautiful (SBB) extending its hand in support of community projects with an ongoing commitment to beautification of the place we call home. Some of those projects represent the wide open possibilities of the organization’s longstanding commitments to children and education about the natural world, such as Arbor day programs in local schools. Some represent newly forged ties, such as the birth of the collaboration of nonprofit agencies in support of the Santa Barbara Public gardens Partnership.

For Santa Barbara Beautiful, collaboration is key as the organization looks around the community for ways to offer a helping hand and give an encouraging boost to local programs with similar goals and missions.

Santa Barbara Beautiful has been creating a legacy of community beautification since 1965 and continues to preserve and protect Santa Barbara’s rich and diverse urban forest through its commemorative tree and neighborhood street tree programs. SBB also supports and promotes art in public places and

continues to recognize exceptional beautification efforts with its awards programs for individuals and organizations.

Commitment To Collaboration & Education

Tree City USASince 1980, the City of Santa Barbara has earned recognition as a “tree City uSA” from the national Arbor day foundation for 34 consecutive years. the City of Santa Barbara honors SBB for its urban forest partnership with a yearly Arbor day Proclamation at City Hall.

CommemorativeTree Programthe commemorative tree program has long been a favorite for families, friends, pet lovers and organizations. these dedication markers are installed at the base of city street trees. Proceeds from the plaques help fund the purchase of new street trees in collaboration with the City parks & recreation department.

Street Tree ProgramSanta Barbara Beautiful continues to preserve and protect Santa Barbara’s rich and diverse urban forest through its neighborhood street tree program. With funding from Santa Barbara Beautiful (raised through private donations) and the hard work of City parks & recreation department crews, this partnership has planted more than 13,000 street trees within the City of Santa Barbara. this year’s severe drought has impacted the street tree program, with preservation of existing trees now a priority.

SBB Founder Catherine Adams' Commemorative Plaque

COMMITMENT TO COLLABORATION: State Street FlagsAs Santa Barbara Beautiful entered its 50th year in 2015, the community-supported non-profit organization continued its commitment to downtown Santa Barbara’s State Street Flag Program. Brightly colored soft green flags fluttered along State Street for a week during April calling attention to the organization and its mission of promoting beautification through recognizing excellence in architecture and landscaping, and promoting art in public places.

Bicentennial Friendship Fountainthe dolphin Fountain at Stearns Wharf was recently refurbished, rededicated, and celebrated during a ceremony on the 30th Anniversary of its installation. the fountain, designed by local sculptor “Bud” Bottoms (SBB past president), was a tribute to the Chumash people and first unveiled in 1985 as the Bicentennial Friendship Fountain. the recent restoration project, which was funded by the Santa ynez Band of Chumash indians, SBB, and the City of Santa Barbara, transformed the fountain, temporarily, into a

planter and supplied a new layer of patina to protect the sculpted family of dolphins from corrosion. the Santa Barbara Men’s Garden Club developed a landscape plan for the project using drought-tolerant plants.

COMMITMENT TO EdUCATION:Arbor day ProgramSanta Barbara Beautiful continued its Arbor day tradition of teaching the value of trees by donating tree-related books to all local elementary and secondary local schools and libraries in April, the perfect month to celebrate trees and horticulture.

Scholarship ProgramSanta Barbara Beautiful’s commitment to higher education now includes funding of an annual Santa Barbara City College scholarship. the SBB scholarship grants $1000 per year to students pursuing education in horticulture. the scholarship testifies to SBB’s commitment to education and partnerships within the community.

Commitment to the Arts, Collaboration, & EducationCommitment to the Arts

COMMITMENT TO THE ARTS: Santa Barbara Beautiful continues its strong commitment to visual and cultural arts with community grants to help fund significant projects. recent collaborations include the new airport

terminal mosaic medallion; restoration of Herbert Bayer’s Chromatic

gate; and the development of a Cultural Arts Master plan.

this year Santa Barbara Beautiful funded several art related projects such

as the Milpas Community Association’s “yes We Can!,”

the Bicentennial Friendship (Dolphin) Fountain renovation, and youth interactive’s State Street post Card Murals.

Community Arts Workshop (CAW) - A legacy projectCelebrating 50 years of dedicated service to the Santa Barbara community, SBB decided to increase their gift to the Santa Barbara Community Arts Workshop (CAW) Gates project to $50,000, which is the largest gift it has made in its history. the grant will be used specifically to fund the fabrication and installation of the Solstice gates, a prominent public art sculpture designed by local ironwork artist, david Shelton. the Solstice gates will surround the workshop property with entrances on both garden and ortega Streets.

I MadonnariA large-scale chalk rendering of an original work of a Nature

Goddess by the Funk zone’s youth interactive art team lit up the old Mission plaza in dynamic blazing color for the i Madonnari italian Street Painting Festival over the Memorial day holiday. 2015 marked the eighth consecutive year SBB has sponsored this art project that benefits the Children’s Creative project. this year's project was dynamic, and, through the process, mentored an energetic group of young artists.
