———CALENDAR OF THE WEEK——— !! Dear Parishioners and Visitors, !! First, my apologies for being absent from the 4pm
Mass two weeks in a row. Last week was due to the com-
bined parish Confirmation retreat, which was a great suc-
cess. Survey feedback from the Confirmation candidates indi-
cate they got a lot out of it. This week's absence is due to the
Ordination of Permanent Deacons for the Diocese of Syra-
cuse, one of whom is my cousin, Deacon David Schiltz.
The Order of Deacon is the second oldest ecclesiastical
Order of ordained ministers in the Church. Bishops were first,
(from the Greek Episkopos, meaning overseer.) They the di-
rect successors of the Apostles, set up by them in every Chris-
tian community they established. To assist the bishops in their
communities, they established Deacons, (from the Greek Dia-
konoi, which means servant or helper.) Deacons assisted in the
distribution of the cup, in bringing Communion to the home-
bound, and in assessing the needs of the poor and vulnerable
by distributing the contributions to them as they needed. Only
after Christian communities grew so large that the Bishop
could not celebrate Eucharist for everyone did priests (from
the Greek Presbyteroi, meaning elder) come into the pic-
ture. From the Middle Ages on, the Order of Deacon was
largely diminished to a mere ceremonial designation, one that
was typically a stepping stone to becoming a priest.
The Second Vatican Council re-established the Perma-
nent Diaconate as a rank of ordained ministry unto itself, and
since then, ordinations to the Diaconate have increased, even
as ordinations to the priesthood have decreased. Deacons will
soon outnumber the priests in the Church...which is why I'm
so nice to them. Someday they will be my bosses!! Haha. But
on a serious note, just like Deacon Tom, we will see more and
more Deacons taking a full time role in parish life and admin-
istration. Currently, two parishioners of OLGC are in the ap-
plication process. Please keep them in prayer, and congratula-
tions to all our new Deacons, especially my cousin Deacon Dave. Fr. Michael
