Dear Friends in Christ,

July 19, 2020 - 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who

sowed good seed in his field…He who sows good seed is the

Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children

of the kingdom.” (Mt 13:24, 37-38). As children of God, we

are all “good seeds.” We are blessed by God with the poten-

tial to accomplish much good in the world. We fulfill God’s

plan when we spend time in prayer every day, use our skills

to help others, and share our financial gifts to help build

God’s kingdom on earth. Through our example of gratitude

and generosity we sow “good seeds” on earth and ultimately

help each other get to Heaven.

It is good to be home among you! Thank you for all of your

prayers while I went home to see my parents. Mom, of

course, is doing well. Dad spent some time in the hospital

while I was home with pneumonia but arrived back home

before I left for Springfield. Your continued prayers are pro-

foundly appreciated. Thankyou!

We will be opening our school this fall for full and regular

classes. Thanks to Mrs. Denise Reavis for her on-going

planning and preparations for another successful school

year. If you know of any family looking for a school to en-

roll in, St. Al’s School is now enrolling for fall classes. You

know, we continue to be devoted to educating the whole

child in a small, family-oriented environment. Thanks to all

for promoting our school among your associates and friends.

May God bless our school.

Thanks to everyone who has been coming to the in-church

Masses for your patience. I realize how strange it is to have

Mass with all of the regulations and restrictions in place. It

is strange for me too! With grace, we shall get through this

unscathed. Again, I want to thank all of those who stop to

clean and sanitize the worship space after the Mass in prepa-

ration for the next one. It is not fun to clean… but, so very

necessary. Thanks to all!

The month of July is devoted to the Holy and Precious

Blood of Jesus Christ, poured out for us. The Blood that

coursed through the veins of Christ was a part of that Sacred

Humanity made possible by the maternity of Mary, whose

parents, St. Joachim and St. Anne are honored this month.

(July 26). Our Lord's blood poured out on the Cross pur-

chased our salvation, washed clean the robes of the martyrs,

and gave birth to the Church as it flowed from his wounded

side. The Precious Blood of Christ — now pulsing through

his Mystical Body — continues its salvific work, preserving

and purifying, repairing, and providing nourishment for re-

generation and renewal of its members. We are the recipi-

ents of this holy grace. May God bless us all on the northend

of Springfield with the Blood of Christ.

St. Aloysius intercede for us that we might find the courage

to care for others during our pandemic like you did during

yours.

Be assured of my prayers for your and your family’s

health… see you on-line!

Over the last few weeks, we have been working to create a plan for the upcoming

school year to provide a safe school environment! With guidance from the Illinois

State Board of Education and the Diocesan Office of Education, our Re-Opening Task

Force is evaluating the best way to meet student needs as we resume in-person learn-

ing. Please know that our number one goal is to have students back in our building.

While I know there will be changes, it is my hope that at St. Al’s our changes will be

minimal in order to meet the needs of our students and families while operating with-

in the guidelines that will be put forth by the State. The first day of school is Monday,

August 17!

St. Aloysius School is continuing to enroll students through the summer months.

We are a preschool thru 8th grade, north-end Springfield faith community served by

award-winning faculty and dedicated staff! We provide extra-curricular activities and

offer IESA, as well as SCAA, sports teams, an art and music program, and a STEM

curriculum. If you know someone interested in St. Aloysius School, please have them

e-mail Angie Daniels or Denise Reavis for more information.

School Office Hours…The school office will be open on Wednesdays from

9:00am-noon. Mrs. Reavis and Mrs. Daniels can be reached at 544-4553 or by e-mail.

The parish office is open from 9:00am-noon Monday –Thursday.

We would like to THANK our Magic Match Sponsors for their belief in Cath-

olic Education and their continued support through the school year. This year’s spon-

sors for the 2019-2020 school year are... Heartland Credit Union, Tony’s Electric Ser-

vices, Inc. Truman Flatt & Sons, Inc. Knights of Columbus #4175, In Memory of He-

lene Rachford, Triad Industrial Supply Corp., Bank of Springfield, Noonan True Val-

ue, Marine Bank, Luers Uniform, Michael & Beth Beasley, St. Joseph’s Parish, Ca-

thedral of Immaculate Conception Parish, and St. Aloysius Parishioner “In Gratitude

of God’s Blessings”. Please support our Sponsors! Their continued support for Catho-

lic Education and dedication is appreciated!

Bingo has begun. Please help Ronda keep Bingo successful by volunteering to

help out. This is a weekly event held at Caritas Hall, located at 9th & Converse. It is

one of the more successful fundraisers for the school, bringing in a substantial amount

of money the past few years. We need volunteers to help out on Saturday mornings,

10:45am-3:00pm. Families with children can apply these hours to their service hours

required throughout the school year. It’s easy and a lot of fun. Please consider volun-

teering. You can text or call me at (217) 670-4458. Thanks!

Forms needed from all new students and Kindergarten include: a Birth Certificate,

cur-rent Health Exam, Dental Exam and Vision Exam. Students entering grades PS/

PK, and 6 must have a current Health Exam (updated physicals and immunizations).

Grades 2 and 6, must have proof of an updated Dental Exam. All 3 examinations

should be performed within one year prior to the start of school on August 17 to be

current. Proof of these exam forms are due no later than October 15, 2020.

Luers’ 20% Off Uniform Sale is going on now thru the end of July.

Happy Summer Vacation to all of our Parishioners. Thank you for all you do and

your wonderful support.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 19, 2020... Grow-ing Together . We live in the time between Jesus’ ascension and

his second coming. In this kingdom of heaven that is begun but

not yet complete, the bad and the good (seed) grow up togeth-

er. How do we put up with this reality? The answer is in the Ro-

mans reading: grace, divine activity, life in God. How will I trust

grace this day? How will I let some small act (some small seed)

nurture and grow to benefit others? How will I grow strong and

not be smothered by enemy’s weeds?

Powerful

What you focus on becomes powerful.

It’s a basic fact of how our brains are built. When we focus on some-

thing, our brains will literally re-wire themselves. To make focusing

on that thing easier. To make it easier for us to think about that thing.

Making it more likely that we will go back to that thing. Again and

again.

It’s the science behind memory. It’s why we remember certain songs

from childhood so well. We sang them so many times that our brains

have been hard-wired for that song.

When something gets hard-wired in our brains, it becomes our de-

fault. Our unthinking go-to whenever that need arises. Especially in

times of stress or crisis.

What you focus on becomes powerful.

The obvious danger? What if we’re hard-wired for the wrong thing?

What if our default, our unthinking go-to is something or someone

that fails us when we need them most?

If something or someone your brain is hard-wired for fails you in time

of crisis, it’s not just a fail on their part. Because of that hard-wiring,

it’s going to feel like a betrayal. No matter how much you tell your-

self why they couldn’t have helped, why they didn’t mean to. No mat-

ter how much you rationalize it. For you, it will still be a betrayal.

For your hard-wired brain, it’s a gut punch. Because that something or

someone has become that powerful for you, that betrayal will hurt you

on the deepest level.

Which is why the Gospels are so adamant about focusing on the only

One who never comes up short. About making the one who is that

powerful for you the only One who never fails. God.

The most loving, kind person in the world will still fall short. Still

makes mistakes. Is still human.

To allow any human being to become that powerful for you is to set

yourself up for that horrible, gut-wrenching feeling of betrayal when

they inevitably fall short.

Focus on God. Let God become powerful in your life.

Not only will you never have to worry about that horrible, gut-

wrenching feeling of betrayal from the One who never falls short.

But with your focus on God, God will give you the grace to under-

stand, love, and even forgive the people in your life. When they inevi-

tably fall short.

The bottom line – even if you don’t mean to, you will focus on some-

thing. Which is why it’s so important to intentionally

choose to focus on God.

Because what you focus on becomes powerful.

-Deacon Jim

Going to Mass. Please arrive tot church at least 10 minutes before Mass begins. Masks

are required if you wish to enter church. Hand sanitizers will be available

in the vestibule. The ushers will direct you to your seat. Every other row

of pews will be taped off and tape marks will be placed on the pews for

social distancing. Families living in the same house may sit together, but

otherwise you are asked to observe the markings. There will be no mis-

salettes (they have been taped off and there will be no bulletins( they will

be emailed on Fridays) You may bring your own missal but please take

with you when you leave. The collection basket will be placed in the middle of church for

your donation. You can still drop your envelopes off at the rectory mailbox or by mail.

Following social spacing and guidelines it was certainly a successful start to what will

hopefully be a steady return to regularity. Bulletin are online only. Thank you for your

cooperation.

Face Masks … A gentle reminder that we are still required to wear Face Masks (Phase

4) as we enter and exit the Church. And as always it is recommended to wear a mask dur-

ing your entire time in the church building for the safety of all.

Act of Spiritual Communion... A Prayer by St. Alphonsus Liguori … My Jesus, I be-

lieve that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I

desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramen-

tal, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and

unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

We will continue to live stream Mass on Sunday, weekday Mass and the rosary. We will

also provide communion services after the weekend masses to those unable to go to Mass.

The Parish office is open 9:00-noon (Monday-Thursday) to the public. In the afternoons

we will be working on details (moving storerooms, files, archives of various sorts, etc.) at

the Rectory and on campus. Our weekly bulletin will be accessible through our parish

website. This is the best way to know what is going on in the parish. You can also sign up

to receive Flocknotes. Instruction our on the website.

Thank you for your contributions that keep us current on bills, utilities, payroll, benefits,

and so much more. Whenever there is a challenge or a need, St. Aloysius always steps up.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

In your July envelopes you will find a yellow envelope for St. Aloysius School Tui-tion Assistance. These monies will go to help those families, who have been approved

through our FACTS Tuition Grant and Aid Assessment Program, qualify for financial as-

sistance to attend our school. We are deeply appreciative for your support of this special

envelope.

If you know someone who may be interested in learning more about their faith invite them

to join RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) and find out if it is for them. You

could accompany them (give them moral support) to the sessions as they explore our faith.

RCIA will begin in mid September 18. You can contact the parish office (544-4544)

to register or obtain more information. Now is the time to talk to that friend or family

member and invite them to RCIA. Your word or deed can make a difference!

Protecting God’s Children… We are in the process of mailing background check re-

newal forms to all volunteers who have reached the 5 year (or longer) expiration on their
