Next week’s second collection is for the Missionary Cooperative Appeal. A representative from the Diocese of Mamfe, Cameroon will speak on behalf of the missions.
The Diocese of Mamfe was created by St John Paul II on February 9, 1999, with Bishop Francis Teke Lysinge appointed as the first bishop. At creation, Mamfe Diocese, had five priests, six parishes, and nine major seminarians preparing for the Catholic priesthood. Situated in the South West Region of Cameroon that borders the Cross River State of Nigeria, the territory of the diocese is an area of
primary evangelization. 40% of the populations are adherents of African Traditional Religions. After fourteen years of hard work, Bishop Francis has turned the tides in favour of the Catholic Church, by creating twenty-one new parishes; opening five new secondary schools; organizing a diocesan synod on evangelization and the family;
increasing the number of priests to forty-five; major seminarians to sixty-five; training of over one hundred and thirty catechists; the construction of a cathedral; bishop’s house and diocesan secretariat; opening of three health centers to
provide basic medical care to the poor peoples of Mamfe, and a Minor Seminary (John XXIII) for the promotion and recruitment of priestly and religious vocations.
In February 2014, Bishop Francis handed over to Bishop Andrew Nkea, the Second Bishop of Mamfe, having turned seventy-five, the age of retirement for bishops. Bishop Andrew is continuing the good work started by Bishop Francis. His focus now is education, and completing the St. Francis Xavier Pastoral Centre is a priority to that dream. This structure will help in formation programs for the Youths; the Catholic Women Association, Catechists, Pastoral
Workers, etc.
He is coming to share his pastoral work and get any support that can enhance the work of spreading the gospel in Mamfe, Cameroon.

This week’s second collection supports the relief efforts to those areas devastated by the powerful earthquake that struck Ecuador in April. The Catholic organizations that have been working in Ecuador in recent years include Pro Cristo, founded here in the Archdiocese to provide medical and family support services, and Rostro de Cristo, founded by Fr. Jim Ronan of the Archdiocese. The proceeds of this special collection will be used to assist these organizations, which are now joining in the emergency response efforts, particularly with respect to medical care, and also other Catholic relief efforts. Kindly address your checks payable to Sacred Hearts Parish, with “Ecuador Collection 2016” in the memo. October 1-10, 2016. Pope Francis has declared this year as the Jubilee Year of Mercy and has opened the Holy Door of Mercy at St. Peter's Basilica to mark the opening of the Holy/ Jubilee Year, on December 8th, 2015 and it will be sealed again on November 20th, 2016.
The opening of the door calls for faithful Catholics to pass through the doorway to receive indulgences for their sins. He says that "going through the Holy Door is the sign of our faith in the Lord Jesus, who didn't come to judge us, but to save us.
In the light of the above, a Pilgrimage has been planned to visit Rome and Medjugorje. You can choose to do both the sectors or any one of them.
