Sports Report – The U11 & U13 Netball and Football Teams played Riddlesworth Hall.

This week has been very busy for the Sports Department having lots of events. On Wednesday

20th January the U13 boys played a football match against Riddlesworth Hall School. The final

score was 6-0 to us. All boys played really well and the player of the match was undecided.

The U11 boys also played a football match against Riddlesworth. The final score was 1-0 to

Riddlesworth. Again all boys played really well and player of the match was awarded to Anton

Lucas. The U11 girls played netball against Riddlesworth and the final score was 11-8 to us. Well

done to Charlotte Napper who was ‘Girl of the Game.’

The U13 girls also played and the final score was 17-9 to us. Well done to Harriet and Hannah

who were awarded ‘Girls of the Game.’

On the 21st January the U16’s played netball against Thetford Grammar School. The final score

was 23-13 to Thetford. Well done to Imogen Leeder who was awarded ‘Girl of the Game.’

Also on the 21st January, some members of the Senior School, participated in cross country at

Neatherd School. Everyone ran amazingly well and achieved some great results.

Well done to Harriet, Madison and Ellie who have qualified for the next rounds which will be on

Wednesday 26th January. Well done to everyone who participated. Ellie Hodgson Sports Prefect

‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat,’ Audition - On Sunday 24th January I went to

Studio 19 in Kings Lynn for an audition to be cast as part of the choir in ‘Joseph and the Amazing

Technicolour Dream Coat,’ starring Joe McElderry (the 2009 X Factor winner) and other West

    End stars.

I have been selected to be in the show between 15th and 19th March at the Kings Lynn Corn

Exchange. There are lots of rehearsals, but it is a start to fulfilling my dream. I am very excited to

be part of the show brought together by the West End Touring Company. Emily Ringwood. Year

Harriet 63rd, Madie 62nd and I managed to finish 61st. Ellie Hodgson Sports Prefect

  • Year 3’s very

    entertaining

    class assembly

    was on the

    theme of

    friendship. We

    learnt the

    words for

    ‘friend’ in

    different

    languages,

made a recipe for a good friend and performed a play about what it means to be a true friend.

Well done Year 3. Mrs Leader

    ISA Football Tournament

On Tuesday 2nd February we took two football teams to the Annual ISA Football tournament at

Stoke College in Suffolk. This is is the first time that we have taken two teams and for a school of

our size this is a remarkable achievement, in fact we could have probably managed 3 teams with

the enthusiasm that we have from both boys and girls at the Tuesday coaching sessions. The more

experienced and older side of Thomas, Jasper, Nestor, Jacob, Anton, Lily and Oskar were in a

very tough group but still managed to win 2 out of their 5 games, finishing joint 3rd in the group.

The much younger team (although still playing against 11 year olds) of Nicholas, Sonny, Isaac,

Elanda, Grace, and Harry Spurling played superbly well despite not winning a game. The feedback

from the coaches about both teams was fantastic to hear, especially as we were the only school

fielding girls. There were 24 teams in the competition from all over the Eastern Region and the

standard was very high, but our children matched the opposition in every game. It is difficult to

single out any one individual as you had Nicholas saving lots of shots and Thomas scoring lots of

goals but I would like to highlight one girl. As you know we have had a sickness bug going around

the school which meant that both Harry McKnight and Eliza McRann could not play but Grace

Cushing stepped in on the morning of the game, kit at the ready, what a little star. This for me

epitomises what the Sacred Heart is all about, a community that always wants to do the best for

their friends and fellow students. Simply a brilliant day! Well done to all 13 children who played

    and all our future stars.

  • The Music showcase was an amazing and enjoyable afternoon.

This event was to allow parents and friends to enter

the learning environment of the Music Department.

We were treated to an hour of varied music using

voices, bodies and an assortment of percussion

instruments. The ukuleles have only been in the

school for three weeks but we were entertained by

    Years 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 groups. It was really

impressive and just shows that everyone has

musical ability. Years 1 and 2 musical composing

was impressive as was their confidence in speaking

about their instrument. Little Pedlars showed us the

singing games that they play during the lessons and each one of them could sing individually in

tune. The afternoon was full of musical surprises and Mrs Pickard has to be congratulated on

making music an important part of these children’s lives.

The children were obviously enthusiastic about their learning and knew exactly what to do and

how to conduct themselves. One astounding moment was when a Year 3 boy was persuaded to

take control of his swinging ukulele by another boy who just raised his arm and then lowered it

slowly while facing forward. This had the desired effect and the other boy calmed down. How

many teachers and parents could change behaviour in such a non-challenging manner?

  • The New School Bus arrived in the playground this week ready for the first passengers and Leo

    the bus driver!

Hannah Hodges, a former Sacred Heart pupil enjoyed a

private audience with the Queen at Sandringham two

weeks ago. Hannah Hodges received the gold medal which

is presented in recognition of outstanding A level results at

the KES VII Academy. After achieving 11 A*'s in her

GSCE results at the Sacred Heart in 2013 she followed this

up with a further 3 A*'s in her A levels in 2015 in

Philosophy & Ethics, English Literature and French. She is

currently studying in Lyons, France during her gap year

before going onto Oxford University to read Modern

Languages (French & German) in October. Hannnah went

to the church service at the Sandringham Church with her

parents and Niamh and this was also attended by the

Queen, Prince Philip and Prince Andrew. After the service

Hannah and her family were invited to Sandringham House

for a private audience with the Queen in the

Library. Hannah said "I am really honoured to have

received this award and to be presented to the Queen". She

was also keen to thank all her teachers at the Sacred Heart,

where she spent 13 years and the teachers at KES who

helped her achieve such fantastic results.

  • GCSE History Trip - On the 1st February five students from the Year 11 GCSE History group went

to a theatre in Norwich to watch a play about medicine and surgery. The play consisted of famous

doctors such as Galen and Doctor John Snow who stopped the outbreak out Cholera in 1854. The

play was amazing and added to our knowledge about medicine. It was also very funny when just

before the interval a big bang was let off and everyone in the room jumped. We also had a talk

from GCSE History examiners who explained to us how to achieve the best possible mark in the

exam, also what not to do in an exam. This was very helpful and will benefit us during the exam.

Over all the day was great and we would love to go again. On behalf of year 11 History group I

would like to say thank you to Mrs Wilson and Mrs Chapman for taking us. Katelynn Keating

The PTA organised a remarkable Chinese New Year Party. The Hall was boldly decorated with

red lanterns made by the children and other items generously donated by parents. The evening was

a mixture of oriental and old favourites. The children had a lot of fun with the lion dance complete

with rather splendid cardboard lion head and a long red robe which harboured many children.

They also made their own fun by lying on the floor and holding the feet of the person in front

while being pulled along by two metre high children who showed amazing strength. Perhaps the

long human snake was propelling itself along in some inexplicable way. The costumes were

wonderful and as usual prizes were awarded for the best dressed. Grace Cushing won the girl’s,

Leo Williams and George Milne won the Boys’, and Emma Gott won the Senior costume.

Years 6 & 7 Pancake Race - On Shrove Tuesday our school and other Swaffham groups competed

in a pancake race. We had to run in pairs and flip a pancake 180 degrees. Myself and Nestor won

overall and got the trophy which was a frying pan. Thank you to the Swaffham Lions for

organising this event. Lily Wainer Year 6

  • Sports Report - On Wednesday, the 10th February, the U11 netball team travelled to Essex to play

in a netball tournament at Ursuline Prep School. We won three games and lost 1 which meant that

we were in the semi-final. Unfortunately we lost both of our games in the semi-final but came

fourth overall. Thank you to Miss Wilson and Miss Wookey for supporting us on a very enjoyable

    day. Olivia Leader Year 6

The U11 netball team also played in a tournament at Ursuline Prep School. They won three games

and lost one. This got them through to the semi-final stage. Unfortunately they lost both their

games at that stage but came a great fourth overall.

The U15’s played a netball match against KES. The final score was 22-11 to us.

The U13’s also played netball against KES. The final score was 22-19 to us. Well done to Hannah

Turner for being awarded ‘Girl of the Game.’ Ellie Hodgson Sports Prefect

  • Frugal Meal - On Thursday the 11th of February, the whole school, from Little Pedlars to Year 11,

joined together for our ‘Frugal Meal.’ This is part of our Lenten practice of fasting to remember

those who are not as fortunate as us and who have no guarantee of a full meal each day. Two Year

11’s were also randomly selected to choose and enjoy a three course meal. These two individuals

represented the small number of wealthy people in the world compared to the poor. As a result,

we were able to see just how lucky we are to be; part of the wealthier proportion of society. Despite

the simple lunch, the gym was filled with laughter and the sound of friends chatting with one

another. It was a perfect beginning to Lent which reminded us both of the beauty of simple things

and also of the reasons to be grateful. Niamh Hodges Head Girl & Spirituality Prefect

  • Year 3 Made Purses with Mrs Leader,

Mrs Smith and Miss Lea using paper

    folding techniques.

Year 1 went to the Woodland and

made ‘Stickmen’ as they have been

    studying Julia Donaldson stories.

Year 3 are starting this half term with ‘handling data.’

Here they are creating their own bar-charts using data

about Smarties! -which they ate afterwards.

  • On Thursday 11th February, Grace Cushing, Eliza McRann, Isaac Riedlinger and Lucy Brain, from

Year 5, went to a ‘Maths Challenge’ at Langley Prep School. We worked in pairs on various

challenges. Grace’s favourite challenge was one where you had 2D triangles to match them up

with bigger triangles. Isaac, Eliza and Lucy’s favourite challenge was one with dominoes. We

really enjoyed our trip to Langley Prep School and were pleased to finish in 6th place. We hope

we can go again in Year 6! Year 5 group

On Friday 12th February, Year 6 were invited to attend a ‘Maths Challenge’ at Langley Prep

school. Jacob, Lily, Olivia and Maddie participated in groups. Some of the puzzles were more

challenging than others but we all enjoyed the experience. We came 15th out of 21 teams. Year 6

The teams worked well together against pupils who had entered this competition before. It was a

very athletic Maths challenge. Year 6 are composing a ‘tables’ challenge for the school.

  • Little Pedlars and

    Years 1 & 2

    learning about

    Chinese New

    Year and

    counting ‘1, 2, 3’

    in Mandarin this

    week!

On Wednesday 24th February, Years 3 – 9 were included in Mrs Gao’s ‘Chinese talk.’ Year 7

learnt how to say 1 – 13 in Chinese. We learnt the 12 animal years and this year is the monkey!

We also know how to say ‘happy new year, hello, thank you and goodbye’ in Chinese. It was a

very enjoyable talk and we hope to see Miss Gou again for Mandarin lessons.

Leanna Dorling and Abi Lawrence Year 7

Miss Gao had a different approach to teaching, she was very strict but fair. Even the youngest

pupils in Little Pedlars had to sit up, back’s straight and hands behind backs – very good for

deportment. They marched out of the room. Miss Gao is willing to teach Mandarin during lunch

times, beginning with a taster lesson. If you are interested in your child learning Mandarin, please

give names to the office. There will be a small charge of £5 per term for any age group.

Years 1 & 2 enjoyed making fruit crumble

  • World Book Day

Pupils from Little Pedlars – Year 6 came to school dressed as characters from their favourite

books. We gathered together in the Activity room and enjoyed looking at the different characters.

    Mrs Riedlinger

  • Congratulations to Charlotte, Samantha, Alice, Aeysha, Mermaid, Shauna, Aurelia, Connie and

Kitty, who have all successfully completed a very intensive 10 week textile course after school on

Thursdays to gain a City and Guilds Level 1 Textiles qualification. They should all be as proud of

their achievements as I am. They have mastered an impressive range of new skills to create a range

of creative individual pieces of work. Everyone passed the course including

Mrs Heale and Sr Francis who also took part.

    Kidzania - a children’s career zone

  • On Tuesday 1st March Year 6 went on a trip to ‘Kidzania.’ It’s a city in itself with different stations

like Police. You could even be an airline pilot. We all really enjoyed it and everyone hopes they

can go again. Lily Wainer Year 6 Form Captain

On our trip to ‘Kidzania.’ we were first shown to ‘check-in’ where we were handed our ‘Kidzos’

(money) and a security bracelet. We then were guided to the main part of Kidzania which was

where everything happens. There were so many things to do and so many opportunities from

making Gourmet Burgers to Acting Academy – they had it all! My personal favourite was the

radio station in which we presented and gave weather reports, and if it was good enough, they

would put it on Capital FM website! It was amazing! Each career felt real and we earned money

by ‘working.’ Overall, it was an amazing experience and well worth the 4 hour journey there! I

think by the end we were all worked out! Thank you Miss Wilson and all of the other teachers for

taking us. Emily Ringwood Year 9 Form Captain

Our trip to ‘Kidzania’ was from 7.45am – 8.00pm and it was a fun experience for all years.

Everyone got to try out all sorts of jobs and even earn some Kidzania money that we were able to

spend at the gift shop. We all had a lovely day and really enjoyed ourselves, and we would all

really like to go again sometime. Rosa Linda Salvador Y 8, Form Captain

  • We went to ‘Kidzania’ and it was fun to go to. I did the ‘delivery job’ and I did it twice. I was

going to go on the city clock but I didn’t have a lot of time because we were going back to

school. I hope I will be able to go back again soon! Emma Gott Year 7 Form Captain

  • Little Pedlars Assembly – was all about Space.

They had fun acting out ‘Aliens Love Underpants’

and their movie ‘Whatever Next?’ was well

received. All the children did a brilliant job – we

are so proud of them! Mrs Parnham

National Dance Exams –was marked by the lead Examiner who knew Miss Helen in a former

life. He said that she always beat him in National Dance Exams, so he held her in high esteem –

‘the best’ he said. So we are really fortunate in having the best dance teacher in this sleepy Market

Town of Swaffham. We know that all the pupils have passed, but their grading is still a mystery

to us. The Examiner praised the children’s good manners, confidence and turn out. He was very

    impressed. Congratulations to everyone.

The Speech and Drama Evening was a great success with a varied programme from Year 1

to Year 10. All pupils performed with confidence and an obvious love for acting.

There were some outstanding items in our Variety Show. Lily and Olivia were most feline in their

cat performance and must have really studied the habits and movement of cats. Emily’s musical

rendering of ‘Popular,’ with Kitty being the bullied was most theatrical. It is difficult to talk to an

imaginary friend, but Cayman made us feel that she really was talking to someone else. The

younger pupils were so confident and poised when they spoke their lines – there will be some stars

in the future. I really enjoyed the evening and was disappointed when the hour drew to a close.

Well done to Mrs Pickering and Mrs Bhundia for completing a day with LAMDA Examiners

present and then organising this powerful production. Results of the exams will be with us after

  • the holidays but the examiners commented on the well- mannered pupils who not only were well

    trained but gave amazing performances.

Samantha, Anna and Cayman from Y10 were confident organisers and looked after younger pupils

in the usual Sacred Heart family way.

    ‘Wouldn’t it be Loverly’ – Leanna Dorling ‘Swops’ – Years 1 & 2

‘The Lost Boys’ - Lucy Brain, ‘Black Beauty’- Nestor Bausbacher, ‘Lost Boys’ Lucy Brain & Grace Cushing

‘Popular’ – Emily Ringwood, ‘Best Friends’ – Emma Gott & Abi Lawrence and ‘The Funeral’ – Jessica Gott,

    Tara Nathan & Emilia Judges

  • The Ordeal of Robin Hood – Years 8 & 9 ‘Cats’ - Elizabeth Wainer & Olivia Leader

    Mrs Copeman made

    the Year 1’s very

    happy when she gave

    them each a knitted

    Easter Chick sitting

    on a chocolate egg

    that she had made!

Years 1 & 2 all made an edible Easter

Garden. The large biscuit with green

icing and decorations is the garden. The

jammy dodger biscuit is Jesus’ empty

tomb. The chocolate egg is the stone

rolled away from the entrance to the

    tomb. Happy Easter! Mrs Riedlinger

  • Year 3 made ‘Volcanoes’

Year 3 made ‘Volcanoes’ – As part of Year 3’s study of

Rocks we worked together to build volcanoes which we

later enjoyed erupting in the spring sunshine!

    Mrs Leader

  • Year 11 History Trip

On the 16th of March the GCSE History group went to Norwich

Castle to revise our studies on surgery and medicine. We did several

workshops including a debate. We also were able to study and

analyse tools used in surgery during the renaissance period to modern

times. During this day we were alongside another school from Bury

St Edmunds. We enjoyed the trip even though we didn’t win the

debate, of which Sophia still feels we were robbed. Overall it was a

great day that benefitted the whole groups’ knowledge and

understanding of medicine and surgery. Katelynn Keating Year 11

Hosanna – An Easter musical - The Hosanna Easter Musical has been quite an undertaking

organised by the Music, Drama and Art Departments. Most of

the practices have occurred during our Music Making sessions

on Monday mornings and in Music and Drama lessons.

Pupils from Year 3 to Year 10 have all had parts in this moving

Passion and Resurrection Musical. It was particularly dear to

Mrs Pickard as she sang the part of Mary Magdelene in this

production many years ago when she was a pupil at Sacred

    Heart.

We have so many pupils who are willing and confident

enough to sing solo parts as well as those prepared to take on

any parts assigned to them. The final performance attended by

the Mayor of Swaffham and three Councillors was described

by a parent ‘like a West End Production’. It was truly amazing

how the whole performance came together seamlessly with

everyone knowing their lines, the songs and their positions

and some of these pupils were only Year 3. It will be

something that will leave a lasting memory. Thank you to all

    staff and pupils.

We are grateful for the £654.29 gift aided for the CAFOD

    Syrian Appeal

On the evening of 17th March pupils at Sacred Heart School

came together to perform Hosanna. This musical is based on

the Easter story and charts the events of Holy Week, leading

up to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. All

pupils from year 3 upwards took part in the performance,

either in an acting, singing, dancing or stage hand role – this

truly was a community effort! The atmosphere during the

performance was amazing, with some humorous, tense and

emotional moments. All pupils involved worked tirelessly to

perfect their roles, which resulted in a breath-taking

performance that was received by the audience with great enthusiasm. All the staff at the school

are incredibly proud of the efforts of the pupils and look forward to the next production!
