SACRED HEART COLLEGE

From the Principal Dear members of the Sacred Heart College community, As the term rolls on so do the many events occurring across the College. This week the Parents/Homeroom Teachers meetings took place at Sacred Heart Middle. These crucial meetings help build the relationship between home and school. This is foundational to our boys' learning. It is yet another example of the strong parental support our boys receive and it is clearly evident. Parent/Teacher/Student interviews at the Senior School are held in weeks 9 and 10 following the first progress reports for the year. Summer sport has commenced in earnest and, again, the level of support from families across the College is considerable. It was pleasing to see some of the dads taking on their boys at badminton last Saturday following their matches, and I hope there weren't too many injuries or bruised egos? The Drive Tennis Team continue to shine and the cricketers did extremely well across the board last week. Girls sport is on my list for this weekend! The inaugural 'Music Academy' got underway this week with about 20 students involved in this initiative designed to encourage Year 6 students to take on an instrument. We look forward to the fruits of this project. The 'Hearts' Music Department is certainly excited! The Year 10 Remar group took to the high ropes last weekend. Remar is a Marist youth ministry which has solid support from the students over the senior years at SHC. It has four areas of focus:

Evangelisation and faith development

Personal development and leadership formation

Strong experience of being a part of a community

Social justice, ministry and service to others.

Finally, several initial consultations have occurred in regard to the Marymount amalgamation. This has included discussions with staff from both campuses, Marymount Student Leadership Group, Marymount Board, Catholic Principals of the region, and an informal tour of the Mitchell Park Campus by Marymount Staff last Friday after school. The input to date is shaping the planning and a discussion paper capturing the key ideas and issues will be developed for distribution next week. In the meanwhile, if you have questions please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. The above are but a snippet of the numerous events which occur and a number of them are shared on the College Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/shcadelaide) if you are interested. Should you need assistance in calculating the amount you owe, please contact the College Finance Office on 8350 2500. MIDDLE SCHOOL

From the Head of Middle School Dear Parents and Carers, With school routines established again for 2017, I extend my thanks to the many parents/carers, teachers, Brothers and community members who participated in our opening Mass, our welcome and Parent/Teacher nights and in our CEA program. I hope that that we have begun to form the foundation for a rich partnership between parents/carers, teachers and the community throughout the year. Congratulations to all of the boys for their involvement thus far, especially those who have been out on year level camps. On Thursday I met with many parents/carers and friends of the school who are keen to contribute in some capacity towards forming a Parents and Friends group at the Middle School. I will write in more detail regarding this meeting and future plans in my next newsletter article. I appreciate the time and effort made by those who were able to attend. Next week marks the beginning of the liturgical season known as Lent. Have you ever been lost in the wilderness? In this case I’m referring to the wilderness metaphorically – those times when we may feel alone, abandoned, shamed, disconnected and are in need of healing. Lent is a time that encourages us to reflect - to do some soul-searching, if you like. As a school community we are encouraging each other to not only focus on the tradition of fasting or giving something up, but to seek a better balance by feasting or taking something up. For example, fasting from loneliness and feasting on hospitality. Each year level has a particular theme and I would encourage teachers and students to focus on this theme 'through Lenten eyes'. For example, in showing that our students are developing into good young men, how can we assist the most vulnerable in our society? In our responsibility of caring for the environment, how do we express this in our community? There are many ways we can challenge our students and indeed ourselves to reflect during this time. For me, reflection is more than thinking deeply. It is actioning these thoughts to make a difference. Tim Mullin Head of Middle School

Year 8 Camp During Week 2 of this term, the Year 8 students went on their Year 8 Camp to Hindmarsh Island. Below are some of their reflections. Camp pushed me out of my comfort zone. There were fun things and there were tough things. The activity I enjoyed the most was surfing. I liked it because it was relaxing and cool. The thing that challenged me most was bike riding because it was hot and we had to ride up and down steep hills. - Chris Bradey The Year 8 Camp was great. My class went to Hindmarsh Island for three days. The main base camp had a big campsite full of trees and pinecones. My partner and I had to set up our own tent, which wasn’t that hard at the end of the day. - Lachlan Fordham Throughout the two days of camp I was on, it was challenging, trying new activities and pushing through them. - Ben Davies My favourite activity was surfing because it was nice to chill in the water and catching waves was fun. Bike riding was also really good but it was a bit hot. - Matt Laverty

Year 9 Rite Journey On Thursday 9 February, the Year 9 cohort gathered for the Calling Ceremony to officially launch the Rite Journey program for 2017. The Calling Ceremony is an opportunity for families, staff and students to recognise and celebrate the fact that the boys are in an exciting transitional stage of their lives. The morning provided an opportunity for families and staff to share breakfast together whilst the boys were asked to discuss with their parents/carers the idea of ‘what it means to be a good young man?’ We were fortunate enough to have the founder of the Rite Journey, Andrew Lines, come along and be our guest speaker for the students, as well as parents and carers. Andrew touched on the significance of transition from childhood to adulthood and the various challenges that lay ahead for the students and their families. From a staff perspective it was heartening to see and be introduced to so many parents/carers, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunties and uncles. The Calling Ceremony was the first official event of the Rite Journey program for 2017, with many more significant events coming up in the future. A big thank you to all families for making time to celebrate this occasion. A special thanks must also go to the Norman family for supplying us with the eggs for breakfast! Finally thank you to the Year 9 and Rite Journey staff for helping out on this very successful morning. We are looking forward to a great year ahead! Ben Dray Year 9 Leader of Student Wellbeing

Year 9 Guest Speaker: Brent Reilly Year 9 students were fortunate to have a visit from former Adelaide Crows veteran, Brent Reilly in Week 2 of Term 1. Brent openly shared his story of his AFL career as well as reflecting on the shock training accident that fractured his skull and ultimately, cut short his playing career. Brent now works in the Wellness and Resilience Centre as part of the Mind and Brain Unit at the SA Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). He spoke to the students about having a 'growth mindset,' showing gratitude to others and understanding how important it is to have resilience and positive influences in your life. The talk complemented parts of the Rite Journey Program that the students are currently undertaking this year. We thank Brent for sharing his story with the Year 9 boys and they certainly took a lot from the experience. Ben Dray Year 9 Leader of Student Wellbeing

SENIOR SCHOOL

SACE Information SACE Information Evening for Year 10 All parents/carers of Year 10 students are invited to an information evening outlining the requirements of the SACE on Tuesday February 28 at 7.00 pm. The South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) is awarded to students upon the successful completion of Year 12 studies. Compulsory studies that contribute towards the SACE begin at Year 10. There are a number of implications for SACE completion that relate to subject choice, levels of achievement and compulsory elements. SACE studies are also relevant for University entry direct from school. These important issues will be addressed on this evening. The Information session will be held in the Br Stephen Debourg Performing Arts Centre. It is anticipated the session will last for about 45 minutes. We look forward to your attendance. SACE Special Provisions - Year 12 Exams Many Year 12 students have externally assessed exams at the end of this year. Some students may be eligible for special provisions for their exams. Any student with a long term illness or impairment (for example: a medical condition, dyslexia, anxiety disorder, learning difficulty etc.) may apply for special provisions for their exams. The special provisions available to students may include supervised rest breaks, separate invigilation, extra reading or writing time or use of a word processor, depending on the circumstances. Applications for Special Provisions must be made to the SACE Board by Friday April 7. Please email me ([email protected]) or students can see me in my office during school hours, should you wish to enquire about eligibility and/or submitting an application. Senior School – Rules for Assessment Senior School students have been directed to the Academic Integrity Policy, information about Drafting and Verification of Student Work and the Assessment Provisions Policy in the Senior School Diary (pages 20–28) via email. It is essential that students clearly understand the rules for assessment and the consequences, should rules be breached. When Senior School students register for the SACE, they also have to sign the SACE Assessment Declaration. Students have been emailed a copy of this document which can also be downloaded from the SACE Board website via this link: Assessment Declaration (Form 1). One of the rules that I would like to highlight appears in both the Academic Integrity Policy and SACE Assessment Declaration. It is a breach of SACE rules to permit a student to copy or otherwise use another student’s work. Students should be aware that if they use the Google “Share” facility with another student for summative work that will be individually assessed by a teacher towards their grade, this rule has been breached. Of course it is totally acceptable for students to share work with their teacher, and there may be times that teachers are happy for students to share work for group tasks or formative classroom activities. Students should check with their teacher if unsure before sharing work with other students.

Page 11: SACRED HEART COLLEGEs3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/wh1.thewebconsole.com/wh/... · 2017-02-23 · College Tours We welcome families who may be considering Sacred Heart College for

Students are reminded that if they are having difficulty with any assessment task, their first port of call should be the subject teacher. The Senior School also provides after school tutoring in the library every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30pm–5pm. Several teachers from a variety of subject areas are available to assist students. The Learning Enrichment Centre is also open on Monday afternoons for assistance. The Academic Integrity Policy includes rules regarding the verification of student work, in line with SACE policy. It is essential that teachers see summative assignment work in progress so that they can verify that the final assignment submitted is the work of that student. Sharing a draft with the subject teacher is a good way for students to satisfy this verification requirement. Students who do not commence summative tasks as required in order to show the teacher work in progress prior to due dates may be required to attend an after school detention to ensure work is underway. There is also information in the Senior School Diary about drafting work on pages 23–24. This information addresses issues such as the teacher’s role when checking drafts, how many times a draft can be checked etc. Finally, students should familiarise themselves with the Assessment Provisions Policy (pages 25–28 of the Senior School diary) which clearly outlines expectations with regard to due dates and correct procedures for seeking extensions. By alerting all students and families to this information early in the school year, there can be little recourse for students who choose to ignore the rules and requirements for assessment. Please contact me should you have any questions regarding any of the aforementioned policies and procedures. Karen Bailey Director of Teaching & Learning

Courage, willpower and teamwork carry students to greater heights On Sunday 19 February, 18 students from our Red (Year 10) Remar Caravel completed the High Ropes Challenge at Woodhouse Adventure Centre. Braving the heights (and the wet weather) students displayed both courage and resilience in conquering their fears. Teaming up in groups of 5, students took turns climbing, belaying and anchoring. It was great to witness how the students supported each other through the challenges; cheers and words of encouragement were plentiful throughout the event as everyone learned to fully trust in their team mates. At the end of the day, we were all left with a sense of humility and accomplishment. As a caravel, we now have a firm knowledge that, for us, “the only way is up”! The following quote by Chris Hadfield (accomplished astronaut and space engineer) seems particularly fitting: Ultimately, leadership is not about glorious crowning acts. It's about keeping your team focused on a goal and motivated to do their best to achieve it, especially when the stakes are high and the consequences really matter. It is about laying the groundwork for others' success, and then standing back and letting them shine. Annicka Adolphi Majo Bogatec Remar Helm / Teacher Remar Helm / Teacher

THE AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM: An overview for parents The Australian Curriculum is designed to teach students what it takes to be confident and creative individuals and become active and informed citizens. It sets the goal for what all students should learn as they progress through their school life – wherever they live in Australia and whatever school they attend. What are the learning areas of the Australian Curriculum? From the first year of schooling to Year 10, students develop knowledge and skills in eight learning areas:

English

Mathematics

Science

Health and Physical Education (HPE)

Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS)

The Arts

Technologies

Languages.

In our Catholic schools, all curriculum areas have a religious dimension and Religious Education is taught as a core curriculum area.
