SCRIPTURE READING REFLECTION As one looks at the two thousand plus years of the history of Christianity, one can detect that from one era to another there have been differing emphases on the fundamental mystery of the incarnation, public ministry, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, second person of the Holy Trinity. So, e.g. it would seem that the early Christians were fixated on the conquest of death by the risen Christ; the later middle ages seemed to be fixated on the physical suffering on our behalf, of the Crucified Jesus. In our own time, in recent years it would seem that we have heard over and over again, that God is merciful, that He forgives our shortcomings (since we have difficulty admitting sin). This emphasis, of course, is correct. But it is also an oversimplification of reality. The reality is that life is full of competing tensions, and the Bible clearly reflects those tensions, or shall we call them dialectics. So, e.g. in today’s second reading we find: “I bring with me the recompense I will give to each according to his deeds.” I think this means much more than who has the bigger mansion in heaven. Again, in today’s Gospel which reflects Jesus’ prayer for His church: “Righteous Father, the world also does not know you,…” We no longer hear sermons of “fire and brimstone”. Don’t be lulled into complacency forgetting that that dialectic remains out there in reality.
Our Altar Bread and Wine for the month of June has been
gifted in memory of Marie and Thomas Styles (Wed. Anniv)
by their Family.
