SCRIPTURE READING REFLECTION When it comes to the well-known parable of the Good Samaritan, most moderns, while they may know the basic facts, at the same time fail to appreciate what a sting must have been felt by those who originally listened to Jesus. The Samaritans were previously foreign peoples, put there by the Assyrians to take the place of the native Jews carried away into captivity when Samaria was conquered in 732 B.C. Although they eventually came to worship the Jews’ God, they remained despised by the Jews as ethnically not of pure Jewish blood. So, e.g. when the Jews returned from the Babylonian captivity, and began to rebuild the Jerusalem Temple, they rejected the help offered by the Samaritans, and forced the Samaritans to worship God in their own territory. Contrast this distain with the high esteem given to the Levites and priests as leaders and exemplars of Jewish piety, and what do we have in this parable? Recall, the point Jesus is making is that charity takes precedence over all else, yet those whom the Jews considered most pious simply failed to act, whatever their rationalizations might have been. They noticed, but did nothing, while the despised one didn’t hesitate to act. Therein lies the sting. Each time we begin Mass, we are called upon to get our consciences in order. Often, we use the formula for confessing sorrow for sin: “for what we have done, and what we have failed to do.” Pay attention to what you have failed to do. It may well challenge your self perceived piety.

Sacred Heart Memorial Fund has a Good Purpose Some of you may be aware of the Sacred Heart Memorial Fund.
For those who are not aware, Father Yanas, along with the
members of the Liturgy and Finance Committees are pleased to
tell you that as of this year, all bequests made in memory of a
relative or friend will be placed in the Memorial Fund Account
and will be earmarked for refurbishing our pews. As many of
you have stated, this project is long overdue and is now a top
priority. For your convenience, Memorial Fund Envelopes are
available on the bulletin table, or at the rectory, with the program
at a funeral, and most times during the wake service.
