The Surface Water Toolbox

Customized interface built on the open-source MapWindow GIS software

Windows Desktop application Retrieval, Management, and Visualization of

hydrologic time-series data in a variety of sources and formats o USGS National Water Information System (NWIS) o National Oceanic and Atmospheric

Administration National Climatic Data Center (NOAA)

o International data Perform data manipulation and hydrologic analysis

of streamflow-hydrograph data. Integrated Design Flow tool: SWSTAT + DFLOW

Demo Outline

1.Overview of software 2.Set up project 3.Alternative data import:

1.Read data from script 2.Download data from Station IDs

4.Analysis: Integrated Design Flow tool a.N-day, Frequency Analysis b.DFLOW c.Outlier Detection with R script

5.Batch job example

Setup a new project

• Select a HUC-8 watershed • Automatically download a base set of data

including streamflow gage locations • GIS data layers are automatically reprojected to a

desired map projection and labelled accordingly • User can start downloading data and be associated

with the project

Batch Run SWSTAT and DFLOW

Batch Run: Create Batch Run Spec File

Batch Run: Create Run Spec File – Examine Data Records

Batch Run: Setting SWSTAT Global/Group Parameters

Batch Run: Setting DFLOW Global/Group Parameters

Batch Run: Save Spec File

Batch Run: Save Spec File

• SWSTAT and DFLOW batch runs are done separately • Spec files specify default/global and group-specific

analysis parameters • There can be as many groups of streamflow

datasets as user would like • Each group can have its own parameters that

supersede the global default • Spec files are saved with timestamp e.g.

BatchRun_SWSTAT_8_16_2016 2_47_05 PM.txt or BatchRun_DFLOW_8_22_2016 2_50_20 PM.txt
