Term 4, Issue 37
14th November 2017
Damien Hoare
Principal
Whole School Assembly will be held on the Friday 1st December starting at 2pm. At
this assembly we will be announcing students who have achieved Diamond Level for our Positive Behaviour for Learning and the announcement of our 2018 Leaders.
2018 Future Leaders Speeches- Tuesday 21st November starting at 11:40am.
As you know I do like to put items into the newsletter that make us as parents and carers build stronger relationships with our children. Below I have listed some questions to ask our kids after school instead of “ How was your Day? ”
Last Week’s Attendance Rates for Year levels
Even the last day of term The holidays are fast approaching. While it may be tempting to let your child stay home for the last day, or even the last week of term, our school would prefer to see every child on every day of every term. We strongly believe children need to attend school every day to receive the most benefits from their education. Did you realise that skipping the last day of every term adds up to more than a whole term of schooling missed throughout a child’s education? Skipping a whole week of school each term means your child will miss more than 15 months of their education! For further information on the importance of regular school attendance, please visit www.education.qld.gov.au/everydaycounts

The Aqua League and the Drought Dilemma—School Incursion
Today Gladstone West S.S students saw a performance called ‘The Aqua League and the Drought Dilemma” sponsored by the Gladstone Ports Corporation and bought to you by The National Theatre for Children. The performance was about saving water. The show informed students about types of pollution, eg: rubbish, chemicals.
West students learnt not to waste water, to dispose of paints and chemicals carefully and report leaking taps and pipes.
Students were reminded that water is a precious natural resource and that water conservation is important.
“EVERY LITTLE BIT COUNTS’
By 3A and 3C
This educational program is provided to local schools at no cost and teaches students the science behind the many ways we use water, the ways water is wasted, as well as what students and their families can do to conserve water and prevent pollution.
Lunchbox Lessons
All children, no matter what their weight, height, gender or age need to eat from the five core food groups every day. To do this, aim to include in your child’s lunchbox, fruit, wholegrain bread, salad or vegetables, meat or a meat alternative and reduced fat dairy such as cheese.
A healthy lunch will give your child the essential nutrients and sustained energy they need to concentrate throughout the school day.
Take the lessons to make your child’s lunch box healthy, interesting and appetising.
Lesson 1—Keep it cool Use an insulated lunchbox or bag to help keep your child’s lunch chilled and fresh. Using frozen bread and
rolls helps keep your sandwhiches cool and fresh. Adding a frozen water bottle to the lunchbox will not only
keep the lunch cool but also hydrate
Lesson 2—Mix it up Making the same lunch day after day can become a little boring
for both you and your child. Try to mix it up by having some lunchbox items cooked beforehand and frozen. Mini muffins, both
sweet and savoury, and mini quiche are easy to make and freeze well. Try these sandwich filling combinations for a tasty change:
ham, avocado, grated carrot and pineapple
Lean roast meat, chutney, lettuce and tomato
Tinned salmon, reduced fat cream cheese, shallots, lettuce and grated carrot
Chicken, grated apple and celery and reduced fat ricotta cheese.
Mashed banana with thinly sliced dates or sultanas
Lesson 3—Get clever with fruit and vege
There’s lots of fun and interesting ways to include fruit
and vegetables in a lunchbox. Make up fruit kebabs on paddle
pop sticks. Use small cookie cutters to make fun shapes such
as hearts, stars and flowers. These work particularly well with watermelon and rockmelon. Cut
up vegetable sticks such as cucumber, carrot, capsicum and
add to the lunchbox with a dipping sauce such as salsa,
hummus or avocado. Fill celery sicks with reduced fat cream cheese and top with sultanas.
Lesson 4—Try turning your sandwich into sushi!
With sushi being so popular, try turning your sandwich into a sushi roll in a few easy steps.
STEP 1: Take two slices of wholemeal bread and cut off the crusts. Flatten bread slices with a rolling pin.
STEP 2: Spread each slice with reduced fat cream cheese or a similar spread such as avocado, hummus or reduced fat mayonnaise.
STEP3: Lay your chosen filling at the bottom of each slice, if you’re using vegetable sticks such as carrot, cucumber, or capsicum
cut them to approximately 10cm in length. You can also let the vegetables hang over the edges for that real sushi look.
STEP 4: Roll up the bread, pressing gently to seal, then cut each roll in half. If necessary, spread some more cream cheese to seal the
roll.
Sandwich sushi filling ideas
Sweet chilli chicken, reduced fat cream cheese, sweet chilli sauce, cucumber, carrot and chicken
Tuna and salad, reduced fat cream cheese, canned tuna, corn, avocado, carrot, cucumber
Mediterranean hummus, baby spinach leaves, lean roast meat or ham and capsicum
Lesson 5—Plan ahead
Think about what you will need for your child’s lunchbox when
doing your weekly shopping. When you plan before you shop, you will know what you have on
hand to pack, and what you might need to buy. It will save you
time and money!
Healthy eating and regular physical activity are essential to promoting and maintaining good health. The Smart Choices - Healthy Food and Drink Supply Strategy for Queensland Schools is all about offering healthy food and drink choices to students in Queensland schools.

Cheerleading
Yallarm News
Our school is proud to be the tester of the school health check initiative that promotes and provides access to quality health care and external pathways to allied health services for our families. The deadly choices team along with Nhulundu health services primary health team has been at our school completing our students Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health checks. On completion students receive a new Deadly Choices shirt.
The last day of this program will be run on Thursday 16 November.
For families wanting more information please call Jade Pengelly on 49797333 or email [email protected]
The cheer break-up will happen on Friday 17 November 3.10 - 4.15pm, all concerned to meet under C block. Please bring your canvas shoes if you wish to decorate them (see Mrs O if you want to have a look at the finished product). There will be snacks available and students can build a bracelet.
There has been some confusion about the results of the competition and what was in the newsletter last week. This was not a Central Queensland (CQ) competition it was a friendly festival of cheer with Gladstone West S.S. entering the scholastic division where 2 schools participated. The major international competition was earlier in the year where Gladstone West S.S. only qualified a stunt partner and stunt group in the under 14 divisions.
A reminder to families who have a student transitioning to highschool in 2018 to have enrolment packages back to the high schools ASAP please.
Playgroup is on Wednesdays
9:30-11am.

School Safety Medication Volunteers
Attention Parents
Parents are not to be driving into the school via the Quoin Street entrance or the Boles Street entrance to drop off or pick up students.
This is reserved only for Students with Disabilities who have arrangements already put in place or sometimes students with a major injury requiring drop off which has been approved by the Principal.
No other vehicles are to drive into the school as student safety is compromised.
Thank you.
Parents/caregivers are reminded that all medication given to students at school must be prescribed by a doctor, a medication form must be completed and medication stored at reception where it will be administered to students. Parents are asked to ensure a CURRENT green medical authorisation form is completed.
EPIPENS
Please make sure you have replaced any Epipens that may be out of date. These are stored at the office (unless alternative arrangements have been made). A new green form must also be completed for 2017, at the office. Please update any action plans and contact details at the office if needed.
Any parents wanting to volunteer in their child/ren’s classroom or Tuckshop must come down to the office and fill in a new Volunteers form for the 2017 Year. All Volunteers must sign in at the office and collect a lanyard to be worn while in the school grounds.
Update of Details
We have noticed quite a large amount of phone numbers that we cannot make contact with as the phone number has been disconnected. Please make sure that all contact numbers including emergency contacts are up to date. Not only is this a duty of care for us if something happens to your child, but also we have
no alternative than ring the police.
